Chapter 3: Run for Your Death

[Six days before the events of chapter 1]

A mysterious man sat in his chair in the former headquarters of team aqua. Though he had many members of the disbanded team working for him now, this was team Epsilon, which is actually made up of two co-conspiring teams, of which are team Theta and team Gamma. Unlike the previous owners of the cave, this man's agenda was personal. "Listen up, maggots!" The man boomed across the room. "Our first task is a simple one, though it may be harder than it seems. We need strong well trained Pokémon if our plan is to work. And that doesn't mean steal other people's Pokémon," he added remembering the atrocity that was team Rocket. "However... there may be something that stands in our way." A picture of a scarred, scarf wearing jolteon showed up on the large screen above him. "This Pokémon has proven dangerous and problematic to our cause in the past. He must be eliminated, but first I want him here alive. I will make this plan succeed, or my name isn't Matthias!"

[Present time]

There was no time to question anything. Another projectile could be thrown any moment. They needed to be moving. Koto and the luxio started to run, but Koto looked back and Kara wasn't moving. She was confused and scared. Koto ran over to her, "Come on!" he yelled pushing her. She started to move slowly, a look of bewilderment was still on her face. She shook her head and started to sprint. Koto followed and so did the luxio.

They burst into the tree line and didn't stop there. After about ten minutes of nonstop running, the trio stopped and hid behind a thicket of bushes on a hill next to a river. The luxio laid down panting. Kara curled into a ball and started shaking. Koto should have been tired as well, but he wasn't done yet. "Who the hell are you?" he asked the luxio suspiciously, trying to keep his voice down.

"I... I'm..." The luxio was still trying to catch her breath. "I'm... Samantha," she said with a deep breath.

"Why are you here? What are you doing?" he asked her with a bit of annoyance in his voice. Samantha may have been about to answer, but Koto was never able to hear it. He was hit hard from the side as if from nowhere.

He went tumbling down the hill and used his momentum to quickly roll back up. He looked up. A mightyena had tackled him and was now turning on Kara and Samantha. He was about to run up to help when he felt a sharp pain emitting from the back of his left shoulder. He turned his head. There was a large knife protruding from him. The pain began to spread. 'Shit! It was poisoned,' he realized. He quickly used his teeth to dig the knife out, but it was too late. His body was being paralyzed. He lost his balance and started rolling down the hill again. He kept going until he splashed into the river.

"KOTO! NO!" Kara screamed in horror as she saw him hit the water. "KOTO!" She was really scared now. Tears began rolling down her face.

"Come on we've got to go!" Samantha yelled, tugging on the terrified leafeon.

"But... Koto?" Kara said beginning to cry even harder

"If we don't go now we'll end up the same way! We have to go!" she yelled, tugging harder. The mightyena jumped at Samantha. She was just able to dodge its attack before using thunder fang. The mightyena parried and jumped back, taking a moment to decide its next move.

"Kara! We Have to go! NOW!" The luxio yelled taking up a stance that was defensive but would also allow her to spring away at a moments notice.

Kara finally complied and they started running with the mightyena hot on their heels. They ran faster than ever in their life, and for longer. There was no telling how much time had passed. They couldn't hear the mightyena behind them anymore, but they didn't stop. They only stopped when they realized how far they had gone. They were in Verdanturf town now and the sun was setting.

After taking a quick look around the town, Samantha decided the safest place to be was the Pokémon center. She started heading towards it and Kara followed. When the automatic doors slid open, they walked over to a corner of the room and laid down exhausted. The center wasn't very busy at this time of the day. Kara began crying again. Samantha hugged the poor leafeon and tried to comfort her. "It's all right, I'm sure he'll survive. He looked like a pretty tough fella to me."

Kara sniffed, "Why were they chasing us?"

"I don't know sweetie," Samantha replied apologetically. "I was just minding my own business when that mightyena started after me. I was running through the town when I saw that knife flying at your friend."

The nurse at the counter noticed the two Pokémon curled in the corner. 'What are two trainerless Pokémon doing in here?' she thought. Upon closer inspection she noticed that they had a multitude of cuts and bruises. She went to the back room and came back with two bowls of soup and a spray potion. She walked over to the pair. "I don't know what trouble you two got into, but this should help with those cuts," the nurse said sweetly, putting the soup next to them and then spraying them with the potion. She sprayed Samantha first. When she went to spray Kara. The leafeon scooted away a little. No one had ever sprayed a potion on her before. The nurse moved a little closer and said, "Now now, it's not going to hurt you. In fact just the opposite." She went in to spray Kara again. This time, although reluctantly, Kara allowed it. "There, now that feels better doesn't it? When you're finished with that soup come find me and I can show you to the Pokémon beds in the back. If you want of course." She walked away back to the counter to treat other Pokémon.

Thanks to the potion the two Pokémon's cuts were already healing. They sat there in quietly licking up the bowls of soup. The silence was killing Kara as it left her to her own thoughts, and she was thinking about the worst things that could've happened. Desperate to break the silence, she quietly spoke, "So what was your life like before... this?"

"Well I think I live a fairly normal life," Samantha said thinking about the question. "I had a trainer once. She moved to the Kalos region though."

"She just left you here?" The leafeon asked surprised.

"Well she practically lives by the rule that, if you love something, you should let it go. We were very close, but she believed in moving on. So she set us free, and that was it."

"Wow, that must've been heart breaking," Kara said in awe at the tale.

"It was, but it was even more so for Joel, her sceptile. He had spent almost his entire life with her. He didn't want to let her go," Samantha replied still feeling bad for her comrade. "But that was two years ago, he should be over it by now."

"Um... Samantha? That's your name right?" Kara asked trying to remember what the luxio said earlier.

"Yeah that's right. But please, call me Sam." The luxio said with a smile.

"Do you really think Koto is gonna be alright?" Kara asked sadly.

"Well I don't really know him that well, but it looked to me like he could handle himself well enough," Sam answered, still pondering the possibility of his survival. "I'm sure someone will find him."

"I don't know about that. He doesn't really have friends, and lots people are scared of him. Not to mention that he doesn't trust people." The leafeon said lost in thought.

"Well let's try not to worry too much about it right now. Where do you live?" Sam asked so she could plot their next move.

"In the woods, opposite the direction we ran," Kara answered sadly.

Sam wanted to help return Kara to her home and help her friend. This news didn't really help their situation. They finished their soup and sat there a while longer. Both deep in thought about what to do the next day. Sam looked at the worried leafeon. "Hey, umm..."

"Kara"

"Right, do you want to go see about those beds?" Sam asked

"Sure, I could use a good rest," Kara stated getting sort of excited the possibility of sleeping after all this. Normally she hated sleeping.

The two walked to the back of the pokémon center and jumped up on the counter and looked at the nurse. She noticed them after a second and said, "All right, follow me." She walked the door with the duo right behind her.

When the nurse came back, there was a teenage boy standing by the counter. "Hello, and welcome to the Pokémon center. We restore your Pokémon to full health. Would you like me to take your Pokémon?" The nurse asked him.

"Yes please, here you are," he said pulling three pokeballs off his belt and handing them to the nurse. "Hey, those pokémon you just brought to the back room, do they have trainers?" He asked curiously.

"I don't believe so," she replied placing the teens pokéballs on the self-service healing machine. "They just kind of wandered in here on their own. If they do have a trainer, it's either a bad one or they got separated somehow."

"Would you mind if I asked them to be my pokémon in the morning?" he asked excited.

"Sure, knock yourself out. I don't own them. You can sleep here in the one of the many bunk beds in the back." the nurse inquired generously.

"Thank you, I think I will," he said heading towards the back. He walked into the room. The bunk beds were across from the pokémon beds. He saw the two pokémon already asleep in a bed in the corner of the room. He walked into the bathroom and put on his pajamas. After walking back into the room he set his backpack down by the bed closest to the door and slipped under covers. 'man, two new companions will be exciting,' he thought to himself as he drifted off to sleep.
