#8 of The Roommate

It was Saturday. Saturday was usually a day of relaxation, freedom, and a lower stress level, but Saturday was no longer Xaver's friend that weekend. It was the day he had to move into Oscuro's apartment, where he would spend thirty-one days under a strange roof. The urge to either cry or throw a tantrum was Xaver's constant companion that fateful Saturday morning.

All of his vital belongings were packed up in a couple of suitcases and waited by his front door. As Xaver busied himself getting ready, a million worries and fears swirled around in his head. What if somebody broke into his apartment while he was gone? His place could be robbed or vandalized, or both.

Paranoia made Xaver carefully secure his entire home, taking care to firmly lock up every window and door. He made sure not to leave behind anything valuable. Crazy and probably unnecessary, but doing it made him feel better.

The phone rang. Xaver wanted to ignore it but the stupid thing was giving him a headache, so he half-heartedly picked it up and sighed. "Hello?"

"Hey Xaver, have you pissed yourself in fear yet? You're probably going to get raped!" The speaker didn't identify himself but Xaver recognized his voice immediately.

"Hiro, if you actually have something important to say, then say it. If not, then shut up."

"Hey, you shut up, you smart-mouthed little bitch. We're not at work right now, but your word choice still needs to come from a more respectful vocabulary. Apologize."

Xaver refused. "Hiro, why the hell did you call me?"

"Just so I can remind you of your pain. You'll probably be curled up in the fetal position, rocking back and forth like a pathetic little beetle after a couple of days have passed. You're the type of guy who tries to act stronger than you really are, but on the inside you're just weak."

The retriever's words were a bit hurtful and Xaver tried to ignore them. "Hiro, you really ought to hear yourself sometime. Can't you ever say anything remotely nice?"

"Not to you. You've never given me any reason to."

People like Hiro gave Xaver a very good excuse to shun others. "I'm really sick of the sound of your voice. Do you or do you not have anything significant to say to me besides an insult or criticism?"

"No, not really," Hiro replied. "When I woke up this morning, I felt bitter at the world and decided to give you a call. You've actually made me feel better. Your discomfort gives me pleasure."

Xaver sighed impatiently into the phone. "Since I've cheered up your sick-minded little soul, are you done now?"

"Fine, whatever. See you on Monday." There was a dull click on the other end of the line as Hiro hung up. Xaver immediately set the phone down and got as far away from it as he could, as if avoiding the object was putting distance between himself and Hiro. He couldn't even escape the obnoxious little bastard in the privacy of his own home, since Hiro had the telephone numbers of all his employees. The world was an unfair place.

Xaver scoured his entire house to make sure he had gathered up everything he needed, and when that was finished he began restlessly pacing around, wondering when he would be expected to arrive at Oscuro's place. When arrangements had been made at work the day before, there was no specified time and Xaver figured he could probably show up at eleven o'clock at night if he really wanted to. It was late morning and would be afternoon soon.

Putting it off would most likely make it worse though. The longer Xaver waited, the more he would worry and fret over it until he finally gave himself a heart attack. He didn't feel ready to leave and didn't suppose he ever would, but it was best to get the ordeal over with sooner rather than later.

Xaver began to feel a bit crazy with nerves. He fought a mental battle with himself inside his mind, trying to reach a decision. His pacing grew more frequent and less controlled. As Xaver considered the pros and cons of arriving at Oscuro's home early, he wandered through the front part of his apartment and walked past the front door.

"OW!" A sudden, unexpected pain stabbed its way through Xaver's foot, while a loud snapping sound simultaneously filled the air.

Shit. He had stepped on his own fucking trap. The loud noise that the trap made was more startling than the actual pain, but Xaver was still upset over his own stupidity. He angrily kicked the offending trap and sent it flying into the wall. His paranoia over protecting his home was now futile, as he no longer cared. The day was not going well ever since Hiro called him and Xaver wished he could just go to bed and hibernate for a whole month until everything was all over.

He had the urge to smack somebody in the face and shout obscenities. As soon as he saw Oscuro, he was going to take all his anger and frustration out on the other man. Everything was partially his fault anyway.

Suddenly, fueled by an irrational need to get angry at someone, Xaver made up his mind to leave and go to Oscuro's place soon, before he changed his mind and procrastinated some more.

He looked at his luggage and realized that he had no car. He would have to carry everything onto a bus or taxi and then keep a close eye on his stuff to make sure nothing happened to it. Damn it. His morning just kept getting worse.

About twenty minutes had passed. Xaver stood in front of the apartment door and considered whether he should knock or take off running for his life.

After leaving his home, Xaver had carefully loaded his belongings into a taxicab and reluctantly got into the backseat beside his bags. The driver had been overly perky that morning and chattered annoyingly to Xaver throughout the whole drive. He excitedly announced that he drank six cups of coffee for breakfast and proceeded to explain the fun time he had had going to the park with his mate the day before. Xaver wanted to shoot him.

The cab ride was over and done with, but now Xaver was standing before Oscuro's front door and had never felt more nervous in his life. Thinking about his horrible sojourn away from home was bad enough, but actually about to step into Oscuro's apartment was turning Xaver into a shivering, wide-eyed wreck. He couldn't do it. It was just too much in exchange for a stupid job. He would go home, unpack all his stuff, and call Hiro up to heatedly tell him he refused to give in to his demands. Hiro would undoubtedly fire his ass, but Xaver could find a better job with a much kinder boss.

"Excuse me, are you loitering?"

Xaver turned around to see who had spoken and saw an unhappy looking middle-aged raccoon standing behind him. "Huh?" Xaver asked stupidly.

"I don't tolerate anybody loitering around in this hallway near my door," the coon explained, pointing at the door across from Oscuro's. "Either quit standing around and get where you're supposed to be already, or I'll report you to the landlord."

Xaver realized he had been standing in front of Oscuro's door for several minutes. "Sorry." The older fur was creepy and Xaver wanted to get himself away as quickly as possible before the raccoon complained some more. Xaver was so panicked that without thinking, he knocked on Oscuro's door.

It was too late to run away. The complaining man was still behind him and was probably watching. He could tattle and tell Oscuro that Xaver had been there, and Oscuro would probably tease Xaver and make him feel like an idiot. Damn that raccoon in the hallway. Damn Oscuro. Damn everything.

All of Xaver's thoughts and worries were cut short when the door opened. Double shit. All of Xaver's chances of escape had just disappeared.

"Xaver!" Oscuro's face lit up as soon as he saw who was standing in his doorway. "I thought you would have been too scared to come!"

"Why the hell would I be scared?" Xaver replied, his fur standing on end, his tail flicking back and forth behind him in a nervous fit. "You're as threatening as a dead body."

"You can get diseases from a dead body," Oscuro pointed out, grinning at the cougar that stood in front of him.

"Exactly. It's the perfect analogy because you probably have STD's." That was one of the reasons why Xaver was so bent on avoiding sex. He was sure that he would probably catch some sort of sickness the moment anyone touched him.

Oscuro just laughed. "Don't worry, I'll get tested." Before the big cat could pull away, Oscuro grabbed Xaver by the arm and tugged him inside the apartment. "This is going to be fun! I'll have someone to hang out with all day long every day!" He reminded Xaver of an immature little cub who just made a new best friend.

Xaver's discomfort increased rapidly. He hastily tugged his arm out of Oscuro's grasp and brought all of his luggage inside. "I refuse to spend time with you. Show me where my room is so I can lock myself inside it and be in peace."

Oscuro's happy, excited smile turned into an expression of wicked pleasure. "Too bad. There's only one bedroom and I'm not going to let you lock me out of my own room."

Xaver's heart rate went up and he felt on the edge of having a nervous breakdown. "Why the fuck do you only have one bedroom?"

"I don't need another room. I live alone." Oscuro patted Xaver on the back. "Don't get scared. I'm not going to molest you or anything, unless I accidentally do it in my sleep. Then it's not my fault. Sometimes I just can't help getting horny while I'm sleeping. Does that ever happen to you?"

"Of course not." Xaver subtly took a step backwards away from Oscuro, starting to feel intimidated. "I don't want to hear about your sexual activities. Since I'm most certainly not sleeping with you, I'll spend the night on the couch."

"You aren't any fun," Oscuro complained, his ears folding back in sadness. "I haven't done anything wrong to you, so why do you have to be this way? Are you ever happy?"

Xaver glared, masking his anxiety. "No, I'm not. Being around you makes me want to slit my wrists." He glanced around at his surroundings his orange-yellow eyes wide with fear. "Is there anywhere I can go where I can be alone?"

As much as Oscuro wanted to get to know Xaver while annoying the hell out of him in the process, he didn't want his guest to be miserable so soon after arriving. He sighed. "I'll give you some space for a little while. Just relax in the living room and I'll stay out of your way until I get really bored." Xaver just nodded wordlessly and Oscuro disappeared, going off to another room to amuse himself.

Xaver knelt down on the floor next to his bags, not even feeling comfortable with sitting on the couch. He felt like a cub going to summer camp who just didn't fit in and got stuck with a weird, scary cabin mate. He had been in Oscuro's home for about five minutes and he was already thoroughly miserable. It was ridiculous to get homesick so soon, but Xaver couldn't help it and desperately wanted to be back in his own apartment. There was a clock on the wall and the second hand ticked by, sounding loud in the silent room. Xaver's legs felt cramped from his kneeling position, but he didn't move. He felt anti-social with a home for the first time.

Nothing terrible had happened to him so far, but Xaver refused to believe that the situation wouldn't be as bad as he thought. He would stubbornly be a pessimist the whole way through.

He didn't know how much time passed. The minutes went by more slowly when he was bored. Oscuro eventually came back into the room and gave Xaver a friendly poke in the shoulder. "You're still sitting there?"

Xaver nodded. "Yeah."

"Well get up! That looks boring!" Oscuro said with a hidden laugh.

Xaver remembered his plan of behaving in a way that would drive Oscuro away from him. He drew his knees up to his chest and hugged his legs, curled into a ball while sitting up. "I can't. Strange houses scare me. Something could be lurking around and could get me!"

Oscuro looked at Xaver like he belonged in a mental hospital. "That's stupid. I'm the only thing lurking around here, and I won't hurt you unless you want me to!" He grabbed Xaver's arms and forcefully hauled the cat to his feet. "Are you hungry or anything? I can get you something."

"No thanks. I'd rather starve." Xaver whispered out, his tail coming to wrap around his waist, while his ears twitched at the smallest noise.

"I'm not going to let you kill yourself while you're under my roof. My apartment isn't dangerous and full of lunatic killers, I promise." Oscuro took Xaver's paw and dragged him over to the couch, and Xaver followed him like an unwilling robot. Oscuro sat down on the couch and patted the spot next to him. "Sit down and watch TV. It doesn't require any socializing."

"Fine." Xaver stiffly sat down as far away from Oscuro as he could get. Oscuro got up, pushed a button on the television and turned it on, and sat back down. Xaver defiantly refused to look at the television screen and stared down at the carpet instead, silently despairing over how unbearably long the day was going to be.

Oscuro said nothing and watched the TV quietly, still enjoying himself despite Xaver's taciturn behavior. Xaver needed to get used to him and the best way to accomplish that was sitting together and focusing on something besides each other. As a commercial break came on, Oscuro grew more aware of Xaver and found that he couldn't help thinking about the cougar. He badly wanted Xaver to open up more, even if he pissed him off in doing so.

He glanced over at the big cat. There was a small table next to Xaver's side of the couch that held the television remote and a couple of magazines. Oscuro got the perfect idea.

"I need the remote," he said. Xaver said nothing, still bent on ignoring everyone and everything. Oscuro reached across Xaver's body, grabbed the remote off the table, and "accidentally" dropped it in Xaver's lap. The shorter male looked a bit startled but still said nothing and stared back down at the floor. Oscuro reached for the remote, but instead of picking up the device, his hand found its way between Xaver's legs. His fingers cupped Xaver's cock and gently gave it a squeeze.

Xaver went into an immediate state of panic. His eyes grew wide, his fur stood on end, his tail stood straight up and he jumped away from Oscuro's hand so quickly that he fell off the couch. He immediately stood up and backed away a couple of paces. "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?"

Oscuro smiled, amused by Xaver's reaction. "Sorry. I guess I thought it was the remote."

Xaver's heart was pounding so rapidly that he could hear it in his ears. Nobody had ever touched him there before and he never expected anyone to ever do such a thing. "I can't believe you, you sick bastard! You totally tricked me! You lured me onto the couch with you, innocently assuring me that nothing would go wrong, but all along you were planning to molest me!"

Oscuro's smile faded. "I didn't plan on anything. I really did want to have an "innocent" time with you, but then I impulsively decided to touch you." His grin returned. "I can't help it if you're vulnerable."

Xaver maintained a generous distance away from the couch. "I'm not vulnerable. I was unsuspecting. It isn't fair to catch me by surprise like that."

"I wouldn't have to surprise you if you were willing," Oscuro said. "Since my unexpected crotch-grabbing scared you, we can try it again, this time with your knowledge of it."

The other male was shocked and outraged. "Fuck no. You can't touch me whether I'm aware of it or not. What makes you think I would actually feel any pleasure from an idiot like you?"

"I turn a lot of people on, believe it or not," Oscuro replied. "I've probably had more sex in a month that your parents have had in their whole lives."

"Don't drag my parents into this!" Xaver snapped, his lips pulled back in a snarl. "What do they have to do with anything?"

"Nothing, really. But after having you, they probably never wanted to fuck again."

Xaver stomped his foot on the ground. "Damn it, I'm not talking to you anymore!" Absolutely seething with rage, he stormed out of the room and just kept walking, not caring where he went. His fear of exploring Oscuro's apartment died away as his anger flared up. He just wanted to get away from the grey-haired buck fast and ended up in the safest room in the house. Bathrooms were always havens of privacy and Xaver shut himself up in the small room, carefully locking the door.

Oscuro meanwhile was still sitting on the couch, staring down the hallway where Xaver had disappeared. Perhaps he had gone too far. Xaver had only just arrived and he was emotionally unstable for the time being, which meant that grabbing his cock was not a good idea. What was even worse was that now that Oscuro had felt the cougar for that brief, unsatisfying moment, he badly wanted to touch more of him.

The phone rang and Oscuro was glad for a distraction. He picked it up and held it to his ear. "Hello?"

"Hey, Oscuro. It's Hiro. Just wanted to know if you've heard anything from that dumb son of a bitch Xaver."

"Actually, he arrived at my place a little while ago. He's currently hiding somewhere because I touched his precious little private parts."

Hiro laughed. "You're putting the moves on him already then?"

"I wouldn't say that. I really think I fucked up pretty bad. Xaver hated me before, but now I think he's going to run away while my back is turned." Oscuro sighed. "I just can't seem to get along with the guy. I start out friendly, and then I do or say something weird and he completely freaks out."

"Well, that's Xaver for you. Instead of interacting like a normal person, he has to act psychotic. Don't give up yet. By the sound of it, you're doing a good job of scarring him for life."

Oscuro sighed again, flicking an ear in annoyance. "Yeah, harassing him is fun, but I don't want him to be so pissed that he can't even stand to look at me. I'd like to get into his pants, you know."

"Don't worry, you will," Hiro assured him. "As soon as work starts up on Monday, I'll introduce Xaver to the manipulation technique known as peer pressure. It always works with cubs, and since Xaver has the maturity level of an eight-year-old sometimes, it can't fail with him."

"Hiro?"

"Yeah?"

"I think you put way too much thought into this. I swear, all you ever think about is new ways to torture Xaver." Oscuro suddenly realized something else. "Wait a minute, I'm actually having a nice, friendly phone conversation with my evil, undersized boss. Hiro, is it possible that you're actually having a good day?"

"I am for now, until somebody pisses me off. The thought of an unhappy Xaver has put me in a semi-happy mood."

"Sick bastard." Oscuro glanced at his watch. "I think I'd better check up on Xaver now. He could have escaped out a window or could be in a corner slitting his wrists because I've made him so miserable. I'll talk to you later."

"Bye, loser." Hiro hung up.

Oscuro set the telephone down where it belonged and absently ran a hand through his hair. He didn't want to forget Xaver and let him run loose, but he was also reluctant to deal with the issue. It was highly unlikely that a stubborn cat like Xaver would listen to him. He would have to try though. The first step was finding Xaver, and if the cougar was still in the apartment then it wouldn't be a difficult task. Realizing that Hiro's crazy plan was more harmful than good, Oscuro started walking down the hallway.
