Chapter 2: Surprise!

Once again Koto's eyes shot open. This time his surroundings were familiar to him. He was still next to the tree he had fallen asleep by. It was only a dream, but he was quivering with fear. It had been a long time since the jolteon had felt this scared.

"Come on let's do it Koto!" Koto jumped at this. He looked up and saw Kara up on a tree limb staring down at him. "Come on let's go to Rustboro!" Kara shouted excitedly. Then her joyous face was replaced with a quizzical look. "Um... Koto? Are- are you all right? You look like you've seen a ghost, and your eye is more red than usual."

"No, no, I'm fine." Koto replied unconvincingly. However, he most certainly was not fine. He was practically scared shitless.

"I don't know Koto, you look pretty shaken. Maybe you should go see the doc," Kara inquired.

"No, I'm fine," Koto said once again rubbing his head with his paw and fruitlessly trying to stop his body from shaking and to forget the nightmare that had invaded his mind. "Let's just get going. Rustboro is pretty far right." Koto added with a yawn.

"Yeah! Yeah! Let's get going you big sleepyhead!" Kara said once again excited and completely forgetting the subject at hand.

By the time the two had left the forest, Koto's body had calmed down, and he had mostly cleared his mind of the nightmare. This was partially because he was instead thinking about the increasing number of humans and other Pokémon that were walking by. He didn't feel comfortable around a lot of people or Pokémon. He eyed everyone they passed with an angry look. For the most part the people didn't notice. Their Pokémon however, became awkward and nervous around him.

'It's funny,' thought Koto, 'everyone seems to be scared of me weather I stare at them or not.' He didn't like to take chances though. He keeps a close eye on every moving thing he sees.

"Ooooh! Look, the bridge!" Kara said quickly once again startling Koto with her hyperactively loud voice. Kara sprinted off towards the bridge but instead of crossing it she jumped into the water and began swimming around.

Koto rolled his eyes at the leafeon before looking back at a person that had just walked by. Curious, Koto noticed that this human had six pokéballs on his belt and three in his hand. There are many reasons why this could come to happen, but Koto nonetheless found it strange and off-putting. An image of his trainer from the nightmare resurged. He shivered and shook it out of his mind.

As Koto started crossing the bridge Kara began to scramble out of the water. "Hey wait for me!" she yelled shaking herself off.

Koto stopped and looked at her for a second, "I wouldn't have to wait on you if you wouldn't mess around so much," he said, staring at her with an expressionless look.

"Well excuuuuse me grumpy pants," Kara said with a laugh as she started bounding down the bridge again. Koto sighed and continued walking.

When the pair arrived at Rustboro Kara started scouting the area for the best places to beg humans for food. After doing a quick survey of the town and where the crowds were, she decided the best place was right outside the Pokémart. She and Koto went and sat down beside the door. Kara would run up to everyone she saw and make sad eyes at them. Koto continued to look around suspiciously as always.

Kara strolled back over with a bag of Pokémon food and a pack of dry ramen in her mouth. "Look what I got," she said her speech almost unrecognizable because of the bag she held in her mouth. She set the bag and down next to Koto and grabbed of few bites of the Pokémon food. Koto did likewise.

The two began to eat their food when Kara asked, "Koto, do you ever think about trying to actually be friends with anybody? Besides me of course." Kara put emphasis on the actually.

Koto thought on this for a second. "I don't know. People don't really like me, and I can do without them." He said in a matter of fact tone, reaching his head down to eat some more.

"What about finding a mate?" Kara asked.

"What!" Koto almost choked on his food at this. "Aren't you a little young to know what that means?"

"I don't know I was just wondering," she said. "It could be good for you. I think you just need to open up to somebody."

"You're asking a lot from me here," Koto replied, a hint of anger in his voice as he continued eating.

"Look right over there. There's a beautiful braixen just waiting for you to ask her out," Kara said with a grin pointing over with her left paw.

Koto looked up to where the leafeon was pointing. The braixen in question was sitting on the ground enjoying a picnic with its trainer and three other Pokémon. "I don't think so, two leggeds aren't really my type," Koto said without much consideration. "And didn't I tell you not to expect me to be social?"

"Ooh so you have put thought into it before," Kara inquired, now grinning from ear to ear and completely ignoring Koto's last question. "So is there anyone in particular that has caught your attention before?" the leafeon continued, desperately wanting to know the details of Koto's life.

Of course Koto had loved once, but he would never see her again. He didn't want to give out his personal information to anyone anyway. "Nope," he answered her making sure to add indifference to his voice.

"Oh you can't fool me, I noticed that hesitation there," she said popping a piece of the Pokémon food into her mouth. "You have a crush! Tell me who it is!"

"HAD a crush, and probably never will again," the jolteon replied suddenly lost in thought.

"Man, she turned you down huh? Harsh," Kara said making a face of disappointment.

Koto grew upset, "No she didn... it's not... like... can we please just stop talking about this." Koto put his head down and laid silently.

"Look, I know what to do. I'll help you find a new girl." Kara said giving him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

Koto shot a look at the leafeon that was like a dagger piercing her soul. She recoiled away from him. "Okay, maybe not. So... what CAN you tell me about yourself? I already know that there's a nice guy on the inside of that mean shell of yours," she said laughing.

"Well let's see," Koto said angrily as he started to rant getting louder as he went on, "My name is Koto, I'm nineteen years old, I was an outcast as a cub, I've been kidnapped, I've been stabbed many times, my eye never stops burning like the fucking fires of hell, I'm missing a claw in my left paw, and practically anything that can go wrong with someone's life has gone wrong with mine! Anything else you want to know?" he yelled putting his head back down and closing his eyes with an angry look still on his face. Then his eyes opened and the angry look was replaced with an apologetic one. He sighed, "Sorry about that. And also about my language."

"I didn't know you were nineteen," Kara said looking surprised. Then she looked at him and softened her voice a bit, "I can tell you're troubled and you don't want to talk about it, but I can tell you that that's exactly why you need to find someone that you trust. That way you can let feelings like that out."

Koto sighed again, "yeah, yeah, whatever." Koto put his head back down. "Tell me when you're done with that food. We'll head back to the woods."

Koto was staring into the tree line nearby, when all of a sudden a throwing knife emerged from it! It was headed straight for Kara! "LOOK OUT!" Koto yelled pushing Kara out of the way! Kara was safe, but now he was in its path with no time left to react! Suddenly something else hit him from the side and he went tumbling.

Disoriented, he got up quickly and shook his head. Looking around, he saw the knife in the wall of the Pokémart where his head had been only a second ago, and on the ground next to him was a luxio, who scrambled up and looked at both Koto and Kara. Then the luxio yelled, "RUN!"
