First performance

Jannie was ten years old and was about four feet tall only. Her hair was a rich shade of mahogany. It flowed in waves to adorn her glowing, porcelain-like skin. Her eyes, framed by long lashes, were a bright, emerald-green and seemed to brighten the world. "How do you like it, daddy?" ** s *he asked excitedly.*

He stroked Jannie's ** hair affectionately ***.* "Daughter, that' **s a nice dress and you looked so pretty, how do you feel now?"** His crescent-of-moon eyebrows were thin and narrow. He carried an imperious nose well and his angular cheekbones carved down towards a flinty jaw.

Jannie look** e ***d at* her beloved father** , her eyes passive and calm. " ***Suddenly* I have butterflies in my stomach** , ***"* she felt herself blushing furiously.

"Take it easy, just follow my instructions," ** he said with a smile.**

His encouragement was a great prop to his daughter's** self-confidence. "This is my first time and I *'* ll do my best," **** Jannie **** promised ***.*

His left hand was on Jannie's ** waist behind her back, the other brushing across her neck and her cheek and her hair. "Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do *," *** he said gently.**

The minutes dragged past. At last her turn came.

"** Say, **** daughter *," *** he said, looking at Jannie, *" *you mustn*' *t be nervous**** , just a little acting only."**

They hugged each other again before walking out to the stage. Above there were half a dozen video screens, masses of lights and plenty of neon.

Jannie stepped gracefully onto the stage. The background of the stage was painted to look like a forest. There was a pillar on the center of the stage. She stood in front of the pillar and raised her hands above her head slowly. Her heart gave a great thud against her chest as her father smiled at her.

He picked up a rope from the wooden floor. Jannie looked at her father trustingly. One round, two rounds, three rounds. He tied her hands to the pillar gently. "Daughter, remember to keep smiling," he whispered. She blushed as red as a rose.

At that moment, the stage lighting gave the effect of a moonlit scene and the song Moon River started to play. Jennie's ** father knelt **** down on **** her **** right side ***, and then pulled up a curtain in front of her slowly. He* paused when the curtain hid her pretty face from the audiences. The audiences could see his fingers on the curtain and her skinny hands were still tied to the pillar.

When he lowered the curtain, Jennie was wearing black sunglasses which looked like a butterfly! ** Immediately the audience applauded. He raised **** the **** curtain **** again, wait ***ed* for a few seconds** , and then lowered the curtain **** slowly ***. Now she was wearing white sunglasses* which looked like an owl! Once again the audience applauded. He repeated the same process and this time she was not wearing any sunglasses! He accepted the cheers from the audiences and bowed slowly** ; **** a ***nd then* t** he ***y* stepped down from the stage. The hall resounded with stormy applause.

Five minutes later, a teacher stood on the stage. "Today is father' **s day," he began. "Thank you for coming and giving nice performances. Before** you go home, the schoolmaster would like to give each father a small gift."

"Jennie, nice trick out there, how did you do that?" ** a friend chuckled.**

"Well, a magician will never reveal his/her secrets. I' **ll tell you after we graduated**** , ***"* Jennie said innocently.

After a few more words, Jennie left the school with her father.

"Daddy, how' **s the school activities today?"** Jennie has an amused twinkle in her eye.

He unlocked the car doors. "Very interesting, and nice gift from your schoolmaster** , ***"* he replied.

Jennie fastened her safety belt. "I can' **t wait for the coming school events**** , ***"* she said excitedly.

He started the engine. "Me too," he giggled. "Now I'm thinking about next tricks."

The end.
