#1 of The Protector

This is part one of a two part series on how Devil got his kanji, Masamune, and his wolf form. I tried to go for a more Japan style theme but didn't do as good as I thought. Comments are always welcomed on where to improve, or just to say hi.

"Alright, you all got your assignments. I expect you to have it finished by Monday," the teacher said making everybody groan.

The bell rang as all the students started to file out for the day. The young man went to the lobby, finding his locker and taking out his shoes, replacing them with the shoes the school provide. Tapping his feet a couple times, he headed out into the nice afternoon day. All the students were laughing and joking with their friends while heading out off the school grounds. The young man lifted his school bag over his shoulder before trotting off himself down the street.

"Hey D, wait up."

Jade green eyes turned around to see another tennager running to him.

"What's up Endo-san?"

"Hey man, me and the other fellas are going to the arcade during the weekend. Want to hang with us?"

"Would love to Endo. But I still have to practice more."

"Man, that's all you do. Don't you want to have some fun once in a while?"

"Training to me is fun."

Endo let out a sigh before throwing his arm over his shoulder and shaking his head.

"Come on Devil, live a little. All you do is practice that magic junk with that old man. You're a young dude still in your twenties. All the girls stare at you and you just brush them off. You're not getting it on with that old geezer in the temple are you?"

Devil gave Endo an elbow making him grunt.

"Just because I don't have a one track mind like you, doesn't make me gay. I just happened to be focused on my training. Maybe you should try it."

"No thank you. I prefer to live my life to the fullest while I'm still young."

"Like I said, a one track mind."

Endo shrugged his shoulders before turning around.

"Well, if you change your mind, you know where to find us," Endo said, waving goodbye.

Devil watched him leave before shaking his head. He looked up into the blue sky, seeing the tiny wisps of cloud pass by the sun. With a smile, he headed to the dojo he was staying at. The dojo came into view making him feel at ease. Walking to the gate, he walked in and headed to the front door.

"Sumimasen," Devil said walking in.

He took off his shoes, replacing them with slippers as he placed his school bag by the door. The sound of the shishiodoshi echoed from the zen garden outside as he walked out.

"Master Iga, are you here?"

He looked around the garden, before noticing an elder man dressed in a simple robe standing on a small wooden bridge that was over a pond which housed goldfish that were swimming around. He was dropping some food into the water as the fish nibbled on it. Devil walked over as the man turned his head a little.

"Welcome back Devil. How was school?"

"Same old thing, different day. I have a report due Monday which I will do probably Sunday."

"Ah, the vibrancy of youth. If I could go back and revisit my youth, I would."

"Why would you do that? I can't wait to graduate and train full time."

"Do not squander youth Devil. You're only young once."

Iga finished feeding the fish before turning to look at Devil. He reminded him so much of himself when he was younger. Maybe that's why he took him in and trained him.

"How long have you been my pupil Devil?"

"About eight years master."

"Eight years huh? I never imagined that in those years, you would master the ninjutsu style of Koga so quickly. It would take others a lifetime to master."

"I had a good teacher," Devil replied back.

Iga chuckled at that before it broke down into a coughing fit. He collected himself, rubbing his chest a little as Devil had a concern look on his face.

"I'm getting old Devil. Time isn't on my side."

"What did the doctors say?"

"My heart will give up soon. They give me about a week, maybe less."

"There has to something they can do?"

"I'm almost ninety years old. I've lived my life to the fullest. Now, its your turn."

Iga turned and looked into the sky, admiring the clear blue with the mixture of white, puffy clouds mixed in. Maybe it was finally time to pass it on.

"Devil, get changed and show me everything that you learned."

"Yes master."

Devil hurried inside, getting changed into a white gi with a black belt. With a smile, he headed to the dojo where Iga was waiting for him, seated upon a cushion. Several weapon racks were lined on the wall, each blade was shining as not a spot of rust was seen. The wooden floor was polished and shined brightly with not so much as a scratch on it. Iga looked at him before nodding his head.

"Alright, we'll now begin."

He clapped his hands as several dummies appeared from the floor.

"Kasai."

Devil took a stance, lifting his right hand before making a kanji in the air as it burned. Fire formed in his hand before he tossed it towards one of the dummies as it burst into flames.

"Good. Aisu."

Devil made another kanji, this one turning a light blue as the air started to get cold. He lifted two fingers as one of the dummies got covered in a block of ice before shattering.

"Excellent. Now, Inazuma"

Devil wrote another kanji, the image turning purple as the hair on the back of his head started to rise. In a flash, a strong bolt of lightning tore through the sky striking the dummy making the floor shake from the power.

"Finally, Chikyu."

The last kanji Devil made, turned a dark brown. The ground started to shake before a pillar of rock shot up from the ground, impaling the dummy right in the middle. Iga smiled, clapping his hands in approval.

"Very good Devil. I taught you well. Do you remember what I told you about the Koga style?"

"The Koga style can be used as a deadly weapon or a defensive tool depending on the situation. Always think before acting out or you'll cause unwanted injury or death."

Iga nodded before standing up with the assistance of a cane and walked over, patting Devil on the shoulder.

"I'm glad to be able to teach such a fine pupil like you. Do you remember the other spells I taught you for defensive purposes?"

"Of course Iga-sama."

"Good. Then I have no problem with giving you one last thing."

He walked over to a large stone statue of a samurai in the back on one knee presenting a sword with both hands. He made a kanji in the air causing it to glow a bright yellow as the statue responded. The sword became real as he grabbed it out of the statue's hands and walked back to Devil.

"I'm finally able to pass on the sacred sword Masamune to my successor, you."

"Me?" Devil said confused.

"Yes Devil. You are exactly like me when I was younger. I don't think I could ask for anybody else to hold this sword."

Iga presented the sword to Devil, a smile on his face. Devil reached up slowly for it. He could feel a slight hum of power coming from the sword itself. Upon grabbing the sheath, he felt a shock run up his arm making him drop it back into Iga's hands.

"What was that?" he asked, arm still tingling a little.

"Every master of the Masamune gets a kanji tattooed on their right shoulder. This kanji represents your innermost spirit and makes you the sword's master until you pass it on to somebody else. The slight tingle you feel is the sword giving you its power. Now, take the blade and embrace the power bestowed upon you."

Devil nodded, reaching for the sword again. Grabbing the sheath, he felt the shock come back. It started as a tingle at first, but soon became a strong surge making him gasp in surprise. His right shoulder began to glow as the sword imprinted itself onto it. The pain lasted but a few seconds as Devil got his breath back.

"You have made me proud Devil."

Devil gave a smile before taking a look at the kanji tattoo left on his shoulder. Iga nodded his head as he looked at it.

"Ah, the kanji of Okami, the wolf. Very good choice for you. The wolf is a very proud, cunning, and loyal creature that uses its surroundings to its advantage."

"What did you get master?"

Iga rolled his sleeve up, showing the kanji for dragon.

"I have the dragon. Dragons are known to be very wise and very powerful. My master thought I should've gotten something different, but I lived up to the expectations," he smiled, rolling his sleeve back down.

Devil smiled, attaching the strap of the sheath to his belt and bowing respectfully to Iga.

"Thank you master Iga for accepting me as your successor. I will uphold the Koga style and its honor until I die."

"I know you will. Now then, let's get something to eat."

///////

The weekend hit as Devil was outside the dojo, sweeping up the dead leaves. It was a beautiful day as the sun was shining and the breeze was just right. A few birds landed near him making him smile as he dug into his pocket and taking out a small handful of rice.

"Here you go friends. Have a snack."

Laughter caught his attention as he turned to see people coming up the stairs. He recognized one of them as Endo, but didn't know the other five people.

"Told you he would be here," Endo said with a smile.

Devil leaned on the broom before sighing.

"And why are you here?"

"I told you we were going to the arcade today to have some fun. We came by to pick you up," Endo said grinning.

"I told you I'm-"

"The arcade sounds like fun," Iga said walking outside.

Devil gave a small bow before frowning.

"Master Iga, you know I still have to train more."

"All you do is train man," one of the kids said. "You need to lighten up and relax, have some fun once in a while."

Devil was going to respond before Iga spoke up first.

"I agree with the young man. You should have some fun."

"But master-"

"What did I tell you yesterday Devil?"

"That I should live my life to the fullest."

"Exactly. I have taught you everything about the Koga style. Now, you need to unwind and be carefree. Go with your friends and have fun."

Devil let out a sigh before nodding his head.

"I understand. Let me get changed Endo. Give me about five minutes."

Everybody watched him jog into the dojo before Iga turned to the kids.

"Don't mind Devil. He's very passionate about his training."

"I know. I try to tell him to unwind but he keeps blowing me off," Endo said shrugging his shoulders.

"Well just keep egging him on. He'll come around eventually."

Devil came back out wearing a pair of grey shorts and a black shirt.

"Alright, time to have some fun. I heard they have a new pinball machine. First game's on me," Endo said as the group turned to leave.

Devil was about to head out before Iga stopped him.

"One more thing Devil."

"Yes master?"

"Even though you can't carry the sword in public, you can call to it and it will respond. You are it's master now and will come to you in your time of need."

"Okay master. I'll be back as soon as I can."

"Take your time and enjoy yourself Devil. That's an order," Iga said sternly, but had a slight smile on his face.

Devil nodded before catching up with the group. Iga watched him go, a smile on his face before he headed back inside to finish his mediation.

///////

The sun started to set as the group came out of the arcade, laughing and joking away.

"How the hell are you so good at pinball Devil? You don't even get out the house," Endo said shaking his head.

"I have good hand eye coordination. Maybe if you trained more instead of beating off, you would be better."

Everybody laughed at that as Endo gave a grunt.

"Speaking of getting laid, you know that cute girl in 2-S that sits in the front row? I heard she wants to get know you better."

"How do you know?" Devil asked.

"Cause she's too shy to ask you directly. So she came to me and asked if you would like to go out for lunch sometime? She gave me her phone number incase you decide to go with her."

Devil thought about it. Maybe master Iga was right and he did train too much, isolating himself from the outside world.

"Yeah sure why not," Devil said.

"Outstanding. I'll give her a call and see when the best time is."

"Okay. I'll wait for you. Later fellas and thanks for the good time," Devil said, giving a wave goodbye as the group separated.

He watched them leave, still laughing away as he shook his head. The sky was a vibrant array of colors that brought out the orange sun going down in the distance. With a smile, he decided to take the forest path back and admire the scenery.

"That was rather fun and relaxing. Need to do that again," Devil said, hands behind his head.

He looked at his shoulder, pulling up the sleeve and looking at the tattoo. Eight long, hard years of training have finally paid off. Master Iga named him successor of the Koga style. He didn't think he would've survived the first couple of days with the harsh training Iga put him through. But in the end, he was glad he stuck through it. Birds chirped in the tree tops as he took in a deep breath, before exhaling.

"I wonder what to cook for dinner tonight?"

"Tasukete." (Help.)

Devil stopped in his tracks, looking around the forest in confusing.

"Did I just hear something? Or am I going crazy?"

"Tasuketekudasai." (Please help.)

"Either somebody or something is calling for help, or I've been training too hard."

Devil calmed his mind, letting his senses take over. Iga showed him how to locate anything using the ki energy every being possesses. From the tiny ant, to the largest animal, every creature gives off energy and can be detected with a calm mind. Once he settled his mind, he felt it. A strong ki presence that was slowly wilting away, like it was being deprived of oxygen. He also felt three other energy sources. But these felt different. Very evil in nature with an intent to do harm. Without even hesitating, he took off towards the energy he felt.

"We have you now. There isss no escape for you."

Devil hid behind a couple of bushes, making sure to mask his presence with a spell, and just stood open mouth at what he saw. Just to make sure he wasn't seeing things, he gave himself a pinch but didn't wake up.

"Okay, now I can say I've seen everything."

Standing before him were three large men. But, instead of human heads, they had the heads of snakes. Their forked tongues flicked out every now and then as they carried a large sword. The blades were a dark brown and chipped in several places. Meaning that when they struck something or someone, it was going to leave a very large, nasty cut that would probably bleed them out if not tended to quickly. Their light green scales bodies were covered with what looked like tattered chain armor that protected their vital points very well.

"You've caused ussss a lot of problemsss. Now, come along quietly."

Devil looked around them to see what appeared to be a large canine. He was never good with dogs seeing as they always barked at him whenever he passed them. This one had light grey fur, piercing turquoise eyes, and six tails with the tips of each one a dark red. It had a nasty cut on one of its rear legs as blood coated its fur and pooled on the forest ground. A sad whine came from its muzzle, a few tears in its eyes before they closed.

"Dareka wa, daremoga, watashi o tasukete." (Somebody, anybody, help me.)

There was that voice again, and it looked like it was coming from the canine. Devil didn't know what was going on or why, but he couldn't let wildlife be killed like that. The snakeman raised it's large sword over its head, ready to deliver to killing blow. Devil raced out of his hiding spot, his tattoo glowing white as he called Masamune to his aid. He got in front of the canine and deflected the blow as the snakemen looked on in shock.

"Who are you sssmooth ssskin? Thissss doesn't concern you."

"Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. But I'm not about to let you kill wildlife."

The snakemen started laughing which came out as hissing noise. One of them pointed it's sword towards Devil who stood there unfazed.

"What makessss you think you can beat usss sssmooth ssskin?"

"Because I can tell by the way you handle a sword, you are beginners," Devil said calmly.

"You dare mock ussss? I'll peel the sssskin off your boness."

One of them charged Devil who stood there with a smile. He gripped Masamune in his hand, the blade giving off a hum of power as it glowed a light blue. The snakeman lifted up his sword, coming down with a powerful two handed overhead blow. Just as the blade reached the halfway point, Devil gripped Masamune with both hands before countering the blow. When the two swords clashed, a loud clang was heard before a screech of pain.

"My arm. You cut off my arm," the snakeman wailed, rolling on the ground and holding what was left of his right arm.

Green blood coated the blade of Devil's weapon as a few drops hit the ground.

"Might I suggest leaving while you still have three limbs remaining."

The other two help their brethren up before backing off.

"Thisss isn't the end ssssmooth ssskin. You will pay for thisss."

Devil watched them scurry away into the forest. He let out a sigh, making a sharp cutting motion in the air causing the blood to fly off the blade before sheathing it. He turned to look at the canine who was staring back at him with weak eyes.

"Ari....gato," (Thank....you) it said before passing out from fatigue.

Devil walked over, kneeling down and feeling its neck as a weak pulse was felt.

"Better get you out of here and patch you up."

Lifting the canine up, he noticed how light it was, even though it was the size of a great dane. Its six tails hung limply in the air as he turned to head home. Looking back, he saw the arm of the snakeman start to dissolve before leaving no trace of its existence.

"What the hell were those things?"

Shaking his head, he hurried back to the dojo to take care of his new charge.

//////

"Have you found the Sybil?" the ursine said, leaning on one hand on his throne.

"We have my lord," one of the snake man said on one knee. "But ssssome ssssmooth sssskin got in the way. He even cut off Blanco's arm."

"Smooth skin? You're talking about a human? But a human shouldn't be a problem for you."

"He wassss a lot ssstronger than we anticipated."

The ursine let out a yawn before getting up and putting his hands behind his back. The elegant red and gold robe he was wearing trailed behind him as he paced back and forth slowly.

"What did this human look like?"

"He had black hair, jade eyessss, and wasss kind of sssshort."

"So you're telling me that a short human was able to overpower the three of you? You are warriors of the Corba tribe. Born and bred to be fighters. Don't you feel disgraced?"

The two snake men let out angry hisses but said nothing.

"I gave you the perfect chance to capture her and you failed. How do you plan on making this up to me?"

"We.....we don't know my lord. But we will think of ssssomething."

"See that you do. Now get out of my sight."

They gave a deep bow before hurrying out of the room. The ursine let out a sigh before walking over to the window and looking out. A vast ocean was in the background with a medium size village next to it. Ships were docked at the port as the villagers went on about their daily lives. A knock on the door caught his attention.

"Enter."

The door opened as a rhino decked in gold armor walked in. On his back was a large, black axe with a silver handle. The rhino went to one knee in a bow.

"What do you want Caldor?"

"I would like permission to get the girl my lord."

The bear turned around, his teal eyes looking down at Caldor.

"And why should I give you permission?"

"Because you left something of great importance to unskilled warriors. If I went to the human world, you would have the Star Sybil in the palm of your hand right now."

The bear smiled before taking a seat.

"Oh really? So you can assure that you will bring back the Star Sybil?"

"Have I ever failed you?"

The bear grinned before opening his hand. A silver ball was produced before it was reduced to a crystal which he tossed to Caldor.

"Very well Caldor. I put my full trust in you. Also, take those sad excuses for snake men warriors with you just in case what they say is true."

"You don't think I can take care of some stupid human?"

"I don't want to take any chances. You know I'm the cautious type."

Caldor nodded before standing up and taking his leave. The bear let out a sigh before leaning back on his throne.

"Why can't things go my way for once?"

///////

The wolf paced back and forth in his room, a constant whine in his throat. A knock was heard as his ears perked up.

"Come in."

A shepherd and another wolf walked in before going to one knee.

"What's the word Kiloph?"

"We haven't found the carriage carrying your daughter but we might know where it could be," the wolf answered.

"And where would that be?"

"Between the village of Gorule and Calmary."

The wolf's ears twitched before crossing his arms.

"How soon will it take you to find out?"

"Shouldn't take us that long my lord. We can be there by sundown if we left now."

"Then why are you still here?"

Kiloph got the message as he and the shepard got up and went to the door before they got stopped.

"Kiloph?"

"Yes my lord?" he said turning around.

"Please, you and Dryst find her safe and sound."

Dryst and Kiloph gave a bow before leaving. The wolf let out a sigh before taking a seat on the pillow. The door opened again as a kitsune walked in wearing a beautiful white and red hakama that brought out her golden yellow fur. Its nine tails waved behind it with anxiety and nervousness.

"Noel, have they found her?" she asked with hope.

"They think they have a location on where her carriage went missing."

"Oh thank the gods," she said, giving a sigh of relief. "Who is going to check?"

"Kiloph and Dryst."

She nodded her head before joining Noel next to the pillow. He put an arm around her and pulled close, getting a soft murr as she cuddled next to him.

"I hope nothing has happened to her."

"You're thinking negative my love. I'm sure she's fine," Noel responded, giving her forehead a kiss.

She let out a sigh before nodding her head.

"Come, it's time for our tea. Maybe that'll calm us both down."

////////

The kitsune let out a whine, pain racking its body as its eyes opened slowly and looked at its surroundings.

"Watashi, no iru tokoro doko ni?" (Where, where am I?)

A sharp pain ran up its spine when it tried to move its leg. Looking down, its rear leg was wrapped up nicely to heal. A bowl of water was next to its resting place as it lapped up the cool, refreshing liquid. Ears perked up when it heard voices outside the room.

"Where are you going Devil?"

"To check on the canine I brought home," he responded.

"I thought you didn't get along with dogs?"

"This one was being attacked by things. I couldn't leave it alone."

"What kind of things?"

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you master Iga. I'll bring your tea once I checked on it."

Devil opened the sliding door to see the canine looking at him. Its ears were folded and a small whine escaped it.

"I see you're up. It's okay. You're safe now," Devil smiled, walking closer slowly so not to scare it anymore. "Your leg was cut pretty deep but luckily the muscle is pretty strong."

The kitsune seemed to ease up, sensing that the human didn't mean to cause it any harm before it bowed its head.

"Watashi o tasukete kurete arigato." (Thank you for helping me.)

Devil scratched his head before chuckling.

"Sorry. Japanese isn't my strongest. I can only understand little words like 'thank you' and 'excuse me'."

The kitsune looked at him, tilting its head to the side not really understanding him either. Devil looked at it, noticing the six tails wagging slowly behind it.

"You have six tails? That's pretty weird for a dog."

The kitsune blinked, still not understanding what the human was saying to it. Devil let out a sigh. This was getting nowhere fast. He might as well get master Iga's tea. Getting up, he walked towards the door before looking back with a smile.

"I'll be back with some food for you to eat. Just relax and get your leg healed."

He closed the door behind him as the kitsune rested its head on the pillow.

"I hope coming here was the right thing to do? There really wasn't any other option. Those warriors would've grabbed me for sure if I didn't jumped into that veil I made."

A small whine escaped its muzzle as she remembered the guards that died protecting her.

"I wish I wasn't the Star Sybil. I didn't ask for this."

The sound of birds chirping outside made her look out the window. The wind was calm as a small breeze rushed through bringing in the scent of trees and flowers. Small rays of sun hit the window warming the room a tad making her tails wag a little.

"I don't know why they said humans were bad. Maybe not all of them are bad. My dad would probably have that human skinned alive for touching me."

A smile appeared on her muzzle just picturing it. The door opened again as Devil walked in, holding a plate consisting of bacon, sausage, and eggs. He placed the plate down and gave a smile.

"Not really sure what kind of food to give you, so I gave you what was left for breakfast. Hope you like it."

"Arigato," (Thank you) she said, giving his cheek a lick before digging in.

"I need to do my training. I would stay off your leg until it's healed. I'll leave the door opened also so you can get some fresh air. It's too nice of a day to be cooped up inside."

Getting up, he walked to the door, leaving it opened as he walked to the small zen garden. Doing some stretches to get limber, he began his training.

////////

"Is this the place?" Caldor asked.

"Yesss sir," one of the snake men said.

Caldor nodded before holding out the crystal the king gave him. It glowed brightly before floating out of his hands. Lightning started to flash around it before a tearing sound could be heard as a veil opened up showing a lush forest.

"Alright you pathetic excuses for warriors, show me where this human is."

They nodded before walking into the veil as it closed behind them with a snap. Meanwhile, Kiloph and Dryst reached the area where the carriage was. The bodies of the Sybil's guards still laid in place, blood covering the armor they were wearing. The carriage itself was in shambles as pieces of it were scattered everywhere. Dryst kneeled down next to one of the bodies and examined it.

"These wounds were made by something jagged and sharp. Most likely one of the Corba tribe working for Dinaden."

"Should've known he would be involved," Kiloph said with a growl. "He'd give up his kingdom to get his hand on the Sybil."

Dryst looked around the area, noticing the various footprints that went this way and that. Looking closely, he spotted a small set that could belong to the Sybil. Walking over, he bent down and took a sniff. Sure enough, her scent filled his nose making him smile.

"I found her scent. Looks like she made a break for it."

"Where to?"

"Looks like she went into the forest," Dryst said standing back up.

They followed the tracks until they disappeared.

"Well, this is the end of the line. Where did she go?" Dryst asked.

Kiloph took a couple of steps forward and reached out. The space he touched ripple slightly from the magic used as he frowned.

"Looks like she went to the human world to avoid them. That was probably the worst idea ever. If the Corba's didn't get her, the humans will."

"Then we better follow her. You have a prism stone?"

"Yeah," Kiloph said, reaching into his pocket and producing a smooth opal stone.

He held it up as it glowed, sparks of lightning coming from it as the veil opened up.

"You know once we go through, we'll be ferals. We won't have the ability to stay in this form. I don't know how Dinaden's men can do it. My guess is witchcraft is involved."

"Whatever the reason, we have to help her. Let's go," Kiloph said jumping through followed by Dryst.

Reaching the other side, they took a look around the area and at themselves.

"I look ridiculous," Kiloph growled.

"That you do," Dryst said with a chuckle that came out as a couple of yips.

Kiloph padded forward, taking a couple of sniffs in the air and picking up some scents.

"I smell snake men. And also....Caldor. Crap. If he's here, then Dinaden means busy."

"Then let's not waste any time."

With a nod, they both took off, following the scent before them.

///////

The kitsune watched Devil train with keen eyes. She never seen this kind of fighting before. His body moved so fluid with the movements he did. Even the magic he did interest her.

"Is he a mage warrior of some kind? I bet his magic would help my dad's soldiers out greatly."

Devil let out a sigh, wiping the sweat off his forehead. He looked up to see the sun setting and let out a gasp.

"Crap, its almost sundown. Master Iga's probably wondering where dinner is. I better get cooking."

He hurried inside as the kitsune laid her head back down.

"Once I get better, maybe the human will come back with me. We could use somebody with his magical abilities."

A yawn escaped her as she started to close her eyes. A cool breeze from the wind made her murr softly. Suddenly, her nose twitched as her head bolted up. She smelt something that was familiar and it was coming closer.

"No. How could they have found me so quickly?"

She started to stand up but regretted it as pain shot up her leg when she put pressure on it. A yip escaped her as she collapsed back onto the pillow.

"My leg hasn't fully healed. If I don't get out of here, they are going to kill both the humans."

Gritting her teeth, she forced herself up and hobbled to the opened door. She had no clue where to go as she limped into the zen garden towards the double doors in the background. She didn't get far as the doors started to shake. A whine escaped her as she turned and started to backtrack. The doors exploded inward, causing splinters of wood to fly everywhere. She looked to the door to see Caldor rubbing his fist.

"Sheesh, who knew humans could make such hard doors."

His eyes spotted the kitsune making him smile.

"There you are Star Sybil. My lord is expecting you. Come along quietly and you won't get anymore injuries."

The loud noise caused Devil and Iga to come rushing out. Iga had to do a double take at what he saw.

"Am I going senile Devil?"

"No master Iga. Those are the things I fought off. But the walking rhino is new to me."

The kitsune's head turned towards Devil and Iga, her eyes showing panic and fear.

"Kare wa anata o korosu, jikko." (Run, he'll kill you.)

Devil was so busy looking at the rhino that he didn't see the snake man coming at him, its giant sword raised high.

"Devil, pay attention," Iga said, pushing him out the way.

In doing so, Iga got cut on the back making him yell in pain as he fell to the floor.

"MASTER!!!" Devil shouted, running to his side at once.

Iga was breathing hard, blood covering the ground underneath him.

"I'm sorry master. Please, hang in there."

"What's....to be.....sorry for? I die.....knowing that.....I protected.....my successor."

"Master, hang in there, please."

"Stay.....strong for....me Devil. You have.....something special...inside you, waiting to be released."

Iga groaned in pain before looking Devil in his jade eyes.

"You are....my greatest....pupil ever. Find.....your destiny."

With that said, Iga closed his eyes, his last breath leaving him. Devil held him close, tears coming down his cheek as he lost his mentor and only father figure he had in life. Caldor watched, a smile on his face.

"Humans are such fragile creatures. Such a pity."

"Leave them alone Caldor. It's me you want."

"No can do Sybil. Besides, humans are fun to kill."

The sound of growling made Caldor turn his head to see Dryst and Kiloph standing there.

"Well well, if it isn't the king's lapdogs."

"Leave the Sybil alone. Or you'll deal with us," Dryst growled.

Caldor laughed at that before turning to them.

"And just what can you mutts do in that form? Maybe I should take you for a walk to calm you down?"

"Ssssir, what ssshall we do with the other human?" one of the snake men asked.

"Kill him. He is the one that took your brethren's arm right? I'll handle the dogs."

They nodded, a smile on their faces before turning around. Devil was standing there, head down as his fists were clenched.

"You will pay."

Masamune appeared in his hand as it started to glow a dark red along with his tattoo.

"You will PAY!!!"

He flew at the snake man with blinding speed, severing their heads with two quick swings as their blood flew in the air, covering the clothes he was wearing in green. Wasting no time, he flew at Caldor with rage. Caldor turned in time to see Devil coming at him as he took his axe from his back to block his attack.

"You got spunk human. But do you think you can handle me?"

Caldor used his strength to push Devil back into the air. While in the air, Devil made the kanji for Inazuma and pointed to Caldor. Streaks of purple lightning came towards Caldor who looked in surprised. With his other hand, he made a shield of swirling magic as it deflected the lightning.

"Full of surprises aren't you?"

Devil didn't answer as he knelt, making another kanji before slamming his hand down into the ground. The ground responded, causing large stalagmites to shoot towards Caldor. He stood his ground, gripping his axe as he swung quickly, destroying the objects as fast as they came. After destroying the last one, he turned quickly letting out a yell as Devil cut right through his armor on his shoulder plate.

"That does it. I'm done playing with you human."

Devil went for the attack again as Caldor stood there. When Devil got halfway, Caldor slammed his foot down, shaking the earth causing Devil to lose his footing. Seeing the opening, Caldor's axe glowed before he unleashed a wave of power towards Devil which sent him flying towards the brick wall, making a dent in it before falling to the ground. Caldor held his wounded shoulder, blood coming down as he let out a growl.

"Little maggot. I guess I underestimated you. I'll let you off this time. Next time, I'll have your head."

He held up the stone Dinaden gave him causing a veil to open as he walked through it. Kiloph and Dryst looked in shock. They never seen anybody go head to head with Caldor and actually touch him. They heard a whine as they looked to see the kitsune standing over Devil's prone body.

"Sybil, let's go. We have to get you back," Kiloph said walking towards her.

"We can't leave him like this."

"He's a human. We have nothing to do with humans," Dryst added.

"He saved my life from the Corba tribe. I'm not going to leave him like this," she growled.

Kiloph and Dryst looked at each other as the kitsune's six tails fanned out and glowed. Her eyes shined briefly before a veil was opened.

"We're going to take him with us."

"Star Sybil, be reasonable. Humans don't belong in our world." Kiloph said, ears folding slightly.

"Either you help me, or I'll do it myself on an injured leg."

Kiloph and Dryst looked at each other before sighing and walked over to Devil. With a little bit of maneuvering, they managed to lay Devil over their backs together.

"Your father's not going to like this," Dryst said.

"It's my decision to make. Let's go and treat his injuries."

With a sigh from both of them, they followed the Sybil into the veil as it closed behind them.

/////////

Caldor kneeled in front of Dinaden, his shoulder wrapped up as the ursine looked at him with a smile.

"And what happened to you?"

Caldor didn't answer, shame could be seen on his face for getting injured, and by a human no less.

"Did you succeed in bringing the Sybil?"

"No my lord."

Dinaden raised an eyebrow at that.

"I thought you said you wouldn't fail me. This is a first for you Caldor. I take it that human did that to you?"

"He got lucky."

"Sure he did," Dinaden chuckled. "Maybe I should hire this human since he can make a fool out of you hmm?"

Caldor growled at that. He would tear that human apart next time he saw him. Dinaden stood up and gave stretch.

"Punishing you would be pointless since you seem to have gotten punished by a human. Find out if the Sybil is still there and bring her to me. And do not fail me this time, understand?"

"Yes my lord."

"Good. I'm going to sleep."

//////

Devil's eyes opened slowly, head still spinning slightly. He sat up feeling a little sore as he held his head trying to remember what happened. After a minute, it all came back to him. The snake men killing his master. The canine he looked after, and the walking rhino he tried to fight. Tears came to his eyes as he still saw his master's face.

"Master Iga," he whined softly.

Composing himself, he got his bearing as he looked around. He was in a room, a small blanket covering him as he laid on a futon. The walls were bare save for a small banner with the image of a lion on it, two spears in a cross over it.

"Wonder where I am?"

He tossed the small blanket off and let out a gasp as he saw his legs. Instead of his own legs, he saw two furry paws covered in a pair of white linen slacks.

"What the fuck is going on?"

Raising his hands, he saw the paws that should be hands with sharp claws. Touching his face, he felt the long muzzle, wet nose, and fuzzy ears. This can't be right? What the hell is going on? He tried to stand, losing his balance a couple of times. Once he could maintain his footing, he walked to the door and opened it a crack to peek out.

"Don't know where I am, and don't care to find out. Need to figure out what the hell is going on?"

He remembered the spell Iga taught him to move around undetected. He made a quick kanji as it turned into black smoke, covering him from head to toe. When it vanished, his body was transparent, rendering him invisible. With that done, he proceeded to walk out the room and down the hall. His mouth opened as he saw everything that was in front of him.

"Okay, I'm still dreaming. Please tell me I'm dreaming."

In front of him were animals walking, talking, and joking with each other. They all had nice clothes on as they went about their business like regular people. He even saw some animals in armor holding spears or a sword. His ears picked up movement coming from his left. Moving quickly, he dashed towards his right and found some stairs leading down. Taking them, he stopped just short of the last one and peeked around the corner. His eyes scanned the area quickly, spotting the exit just behind the guards.

"There's my exit."

Even though he was invisible, he could still be spotted if he bumped into anybody. Carefully, he made his way to the door, sticking close to the wall and slipping by the guards. When he got outside, he knew he wasn't home. There was a village down the hill which he probably guessed was filled with more animal people, so that way wasn't an option. A large temple was to his left surrounded by a large wall. Looking behind him, he saw a forest as he headed for it, passing more animals in the process.

"I'm not going crazy. I can't be going crazy."

Once he was sure he was far enough, he dropped his spell and let out a sigh. The back of his head still tingled a little from the encounter with that rhino as he proceeded to walk, not really knowing where he was going. His ears picked up the sound of running water as a waterfall came into view. Walking towards it, he looked down at his reflection seeing exactly what he looked like. His fur was jet black with a navy blue chest and ears covered by a white vest that matched the slacks he was wearing.

"I'm a damn dog."

"Wolf to be exact," a voice said behind him.

He turned around quickly, ready to defend himself when he saw who it was.

"Aren't you that canine I rescued?"

"I'm a fox or kitsune. And yes, I am. Thank you so much for helping me in my time of need."

Devil looked her over. She was wearing a simple yukata that was black, with white flowers on it. The long sleeves covered her paws as the six tails she sported waved behind her happily. Turquoise eyes looked into Devil's jade ones, capturing him for a bit. She walked up to him, snapping him out of his trance as he took a step back.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"What's going on? Where am I? Who are you?"

She chuckled a little before walking besides him and looking at the waterfall.

"You are in the kingdom of Linnuis. My name is Merriot. What is yours?"

"Its....um.....Devil, Nagasumi Devil," he replied.

"Nagasumi Devil huh? That's a unique name."

"How can I understand you now when I couldn't before?"

"Because when I changed you, you inherited our language also."

That got Devil's attention as he gave a small growl.

"Why did you change me into this.......this creature?"

Merriot's ears folded as she let out a small whine.

"I'm sorry. But humans aren't allowed in this world. So I did the only thing I could think of to heal your injuries from the fight you had."

So many questions danced in his head as he let out a frustrated growl and took a seat on the grassy floor.

"I don't know what the hell is going on anymore. All I know is my master is dead and I didn't even get to give him a proper funeral. Weird, talking animals tried to kill me. And now, I'm one of those animals. Where the hell did my life go wrong?"

"I know this is a lot to take in, and I'm sorry. I just couldn't leave you there unconscious and injured. I'm sorry about your master also. My magic is good, but I can't bring dead people back to life."

"It doesn't matter. I'm all alone now."

Devil pulled his knees up to his chest before resting his head on his arm, ears folded as he whined. Merriot let out a small whine herself, going to her knees and slowly putting a paw on his shoulder making him tense. She was about to say something when her ears picked up somebody coming their way.

"There you are Sybil. We've been looking for you."

She turned to see Kiloph and Dryst walking up to her. They noticed that she was next to the human they brought back in his wolf form she turned him into to.

"Your father is expecting your arrival. He'll want to know what happened to you in detail," Kiloph said.

"Okay," she nodded before turning her attention back to Devil. "Would you like to come with me? I'm sure my father would like to thank you also for saving me."

Devil didn't answer as Dryst gave a growl.

"Hey human, show some respect when the Star Sybil speaks to you. She saved your miserable furless ass by bringing you here against our wishes."

"I didn't ask to be here dog, so back off," Devil said angrily.

Dryst let out a snarl, walking up to Devil and picking him up by the arm, which was a bad mistake. Devil reacted almost instantly, bringing Dryst down to the ground by reflexes. The arm that grabbed him was pulled dangerous back almost to the breaking point making Dryst whimper in pain.

"Never....touch me," Devil growled.

"Stop this," Merriot said angrily, standing up.

Devil let out a humph before letting Dryst go as he rolled his shoulder around.

"Devil, I know you're angry with me and I'm sorry. But what's done is done. If you want to go back to your world, I can send you back. But at least, let my father thank you for helping me. Okay?"

Devil looked into her soft turquoise eyes. All of his tension seemed to ease away as he let out a sigh.

"Alright Merriot, I'll go. But I want to go back home right after that."

"You have my word," she said with a smile as her six tails wagged happily. "Come, it's this way."

////////

All Devil got were stares as he walked with Merriot down the hall towards her father's chambers.

"Just smile and be sure to watch what you say. I'm not sure how he'll react," Merriot said with a smile.

Devil nodded his head as she knocked on the door before entering. They all walked in as Noel was on a pillow next to his wife. As soon as Merriot saw her mother, she dashed forward getting a tight hug from her.

"I'm so glad you're safe my daughter."

"Thank you mom. I owe everything to my rescuer."

Her mom's brown yellow eyes looked at Devil before walking over and giving a small bow.

"Thank you for helping my daughter."

"Um....it was my pleasure ma'am," he responded with a nod of his head.

"Please, call me Sun."

Noel got up and walked towards Devil before extending his hand out as Devil shook it.

"You have my deepest gratitude for saving my daughter stranger. May I have your name?"

"It's Nagasumi Devil sir. Or just Devil for short."

"Well Devil, in honor of saving my daughter, can you stay for the party?"

Devil looked at Merriot who nodded her head slightly.

"It would be an honor sir."

"Excellent. I'll have the chef prepare an extra plate for you. In the meantime, please enjoy my hospitality."

"Thank you sir," Devil said with a bow.

"Dryst, show our guest the spare room and get him some clothes to wear."

"Yes my lord," Dryst said with a bow. "Follow me Devil."

Devil nodded and followed him out of the room and down the hall towards one of the spare rooms. Sliding the door open, Dryst lead him inside before turning to him.

"Someone should be in here shortly to dress you. I'm surprised you didn't talk back like you did to me."

"Because you were being an ass, he wasn't," Devil stated plainly.

Dryst gave a low growl before walking past him, making sure to bump his shoulder.

"I'm only tolerating you for the Star Sybil's sake. Otherwise, you'd be in a world of pain."

"You don't scare me."

Dryst let out a humph before leaving. Devil let out a sigh before sitting on one of the pillows provided in the room. His mind started to wonder about what was going on back home. Would anybody even notice master Iga's death and his disappearance? Maybe they would blame him for his death? He let out a sigh and rubbed his forehead when he heard footsteps coming closer.

"Sumimasen," the voice said at the door before walking in.

In walked a cheetah wearing a maid outfit while pushing a cart with clothes on hangers. She looked at Devil with a smile before bowing.

"Lord Noel has sent me to give you proper attire. Please, allow me to measure you."

Devil nodded before walking towards her as she held out a measuring tape, getting his arm, waist, and leg size.

"You size is very average which is a good."

After taking his measurements, she went through the rack of clothes to pick out something suitable for the party. Taking a hanger off the rack, she handed Devil a grey jinbei with black stripes.

"Please, try this on for me."

Devil blushed a little before disrobing and trying on the clothes. To his surprise, they fit pretty good. The material used was comfy and felt good on his fur as it didn't pull or aggravate it. The maid walked over and felt all around, making sure nothing was loose and everything fit good.

"How do they fit you?"

"Pretty good," Devil replied, moving his body.

"I'm glad you like them. I'll take you to the dining room now where Lord Noel is awaiting you."

He followed her down the hall, taking a few turns as he took in the beautiful designs of the building and the pictures on the wall. Lots of talking got his ears as she lead him to a pair of double doors. She opened them as all eyes turned to him making him fold his ears.

"Lord Noel, I present sir Nagasumi Devil."

Noel stood up and opened his arms out.

"Welcome Devil. Please, come sit and partake in the finest food of Linnuis."

Devil blushed a little before walking over and taking a seat next to a collie who smiled. Across the large table, Merriot gave him a smile. Noel tapped his glass as the chatter calmed down.

"My daughter, the Star Sybil, has been rescued in her time of need. I don't think saying thanks is enough to show my appreciation for her safety. So from the bottom of my heart, Devil, thank you for saving my daughter."

Clapping started as Devil rubbed the back of his neck, a blush on his cheeks which couldn't be seen.

"So, enjoy yourself to your heart's content."

Everybody said cheers before digging in. Devil couldn't help but have a smile on his face as he started to fill his plate up with the various food on the table. Once that was done, he reached for the utensil only to find a pair of chopsticks instead of a fork. He never used chopsticks before as they dropped out of his hand constantly.

"Here, let me help you," Merriot said with a chuckle. "You hold them like this."

Devil tensed a little, feeling her paw on his. Her scent filled his nose which smelt like roses. His heart was beating a little fast as he gave a small thank you making her smile. Everybody was laughing and joking away while enjoying the good food and sake. Devil's mind went back to Iga. He would've enjoyed himself here cause he was a fun person to be around. His ears went down as a small whine escaped him.

"What's wrong Devil?" Merriot asked.

"Master Iga would've loved this."

He placed the plate down, still half full with food before standing up. Noel looked at him with a curious expression.

"Is there something wrong Devil? Was the food not to your liking?"

"No sir, it was delicious. I.....just have a lot on my mind."

"If you want, you are more than welcomed to spend the night here before you leave."

"No thank you sir. I really need to be getting back. Thank you for everything," Devil said, giving a bow before leaving.

He opened the sliding door and closed it behind him, a single tear coming down his cheek. With a sigh, he started walking down the hall when he heard his name called.

"Devil, wait!"

He stopped and looked behind to see Merriot walking up to him.

"Send me back Merriot. I don't belong here."

Merriot let out a small whine but nodded her head.

"I'll take you to the courtyard."

He followed her out of the building and into the large courtyard that was filled with flowers. Her tails fanned out, eyes glowing as she opened the veil to Devil's world.

"There you are, as promised," Merriot said.

"Thank you," Devil said, walking towards it before Merriot grabbed his hand.

"Can I give you something for saving me?"

"Sure," Devil said with a smile.

Merriot smiled before coming closer. Leaning up, she gave him a kiss on the cheek making Devil's blush.

"Thank you for saving me. I hope......we can meet again?"

Devil smiled before lifting her paw and giving it a kiss.

"You know where I live. You are more than welcomed."

With that done, he turned and walked into the veil. Looking back, Merriot gave him a wave goodbye before it snapped shut. When it closed, Devil felt a little saddened. But he knew he didn't belong there. Looking at his hands, he found he turned back to normal as he returned to the dojo to prepare for Iga's funeral.

///////

Dinaden looked out the window into the sky, noticing the two moons that will soon eclipse and form the Blood Moon. He's been waiting for this moment for a long time.

"Finally, the power of the demon dragon Fafnir will be mine. Then I will rule this world and the human world with an iron fist."

A knock was heard as an antelope and a warthog walked in and went to one knee, bowing their heads.

"Well?" Dinaden said not looking at them.

"Our informant tells us that the Star Sybil will begin her pilgrimage tomorrow afternoon," the warthog said.

Dinaden grinned at that.

"Excellent. Tell the informant to have everything ready for the ambush. I don't want any mistakes this time."

"Yes my lord," they said before leaving.

Dinaden walked back to his throne before reaching over to the bell that was perched on a small table next to a goblet filled with wine. He rang it twice as the chime echoed. Moments later, a lynx appeared in a puff of black smoke and went to one knee.

"You summoned me lord Dinaden?"

"Yes. I have a job for you."

"I am at your command my lord."

///////

"You did WHAT!!?" Noel barked.

Merriot folded her ears and let out a whine. She told her father everything that transpired and he was not very thrilled that he had a human in his presence. Sun held a neutral expression, only happy to have her daughter back safe and sound.

"I can't believe you would do such a thing Merriot. You could've been killed. Humans are dangerous creatures."

"But father, he saved me. Any other human wouldn't have intervened, but he did."

Noel was pacing back and forth, a steady growl in his throat.

"I thought that wolf came from a different kingdom and was passing through. I should've asked more questions but I was just excited to have you back."

"I looked into his eyes father. I don't think he would've caused me any harm."

"Not at the moment. You don't know how important you are right now. Only you have the power to quell Fafnir's power. If that human wasn't a good guy and killed you, our world would've been swallowed by darkness."

Merriot let out a small growl and narrowed her eyes.

"I do have the power to defend myself father. I'm not that helpless. If that human did try anything, I would've dealt with him."

"That's not the point. You never should've went there in the first place."

"What other option did I have dad?" she asked, raising her voice a little.

"Don't you use that tone with me."

"Enough!!" Sun said angrily, her tails flaring up.

Noel let out a humph before turning his back and looking out the window. Merriot let out a sigh as Sun walked over and gave her a hug.

"You both have valid points, but this is getting boring. Merriot, we're both glad that you're back safe and sound. But going to the human world was a risky decision. If you didn't meet with Devil, you might've been killed."

Merriot opened her mouth to speak but Sun held up a finger.

"But what's done is done. Devil brought you back safe and sound, which is the only thing that matters to me and your father. You have a big responsibility, and to have something happen to you would be devastating. You understand right honey?"

"I understand mom."

Sun smiled before hugging her, getting a murr as their tails tangled with each other.

"You better get some sleep. Tomorrow, you travel to Behemoth's Domain to quell Fafnir's power for good."

"Okay mom," Merriot said getting up from the pillow she was on and leaving the room.

Noel watched her leave before looking at Sun.

"You baby her too much. She can't make stupid decisions like that. There's too much at stake."

"She may be the Star Sybil, but she is still a kid. Our only child has to sacrifice herself for our safety. You have to give her some slack."

"I know," Noel said. "But with Dinaden after her and his troops advancing closer, I have to be careful."

Sun walked up to Noel and hugged him from behind, her tails caressing his body making him murr as all the tension melted away.

"You must learn to trust your daughter. She's a lot smarter than you think."

"Okay. I should apologize."

"She understands you're worried about her. Don't worry about it. But since you're so relaxed, how about we cuddle?"

Noel grinned at that before turning around kissing her softly.

"Anything for you my love."

///////

Devil sat in Iga's room. The police asked so many questions and he couldn't tell them what really happened. They would've locked him up in a loony bin. He told them he went on a training exercise and found him dead when he got back. Everybody came for his funeral, giving him their prayers and flowers. He fixed the doors and did nothing the rest of the day. His heart just wasn't into anything.

"I'm sorry master Iga. I should've paid more attention," he said, looking at the picture he had on a small table with incense burning around it.

"I told you to stop apologizing."

Devil's head shot up and turned around to see Iga standing there with a smile. He rubbed his eyes, making sure he wasn't seeing things.

"Master Iga?"

"You were expecting someone else?"

"But.....you died."

"I know. I figured I pay you a visit before I cross over."

Devil relaxed a little before looking down on the ground.

"I should've saw that thing coming after me. You would've still been alive."

"What's done is done Devil. I don't regret anything. I saved my pupil and successor of the Koga style. I lived my life to the fullest. It's time you did the same. Go out and find your destiny in life."

Devil let a single tear fall to the floor before letting out a grunt as Iga whacked him on the head with his cane.

"What did I just tell you?"

"To find my destiny," Devil said rubbing his head.

"Good. Now I must bid you farewell. Remember your training. As long as you stay true to the Koga style, Masamune will never let you down."

Devil nodded his head, making Iga smile before his body started to fade. Seeing Iga one final time seemed to lift Devil's spirit as he smiled. Kneeling back down to the picture, he clapped his hands twice before saying a prayer. With that done, he got up and went to his room. Getting into the futon, he let out a yawn as the day he had was jam packed. It didn't take him long to fall asleep.

///////

Noel stood outside next to the carriage waiting for Merriot to come out, Kiloph and Dryst next to him.

"Do you want us to accompany her?" Kiloph asked.

"No. Kiloph, I want you to go to Camelford and see to the troops stationed there. Dryst, you will go with Merriot. Take along some men to help."

"Of course my lord. I know just the men," Dryst said, bowing before leaving.

Merriot came out of the building wearing a beautiful kimono that was a light red color with silver lining. A rose was in her ear as she was accompanied by her mother.

"You look beautiful Merriot," Noel said with a smile.

"Thank you dad," she said with a small blush.

"Now Merriot, you be careful on your journey," Sun said giving her a hug.

"I will mom."

"Here," Sun said, giving her a small dagger. "Just incase you need to defend yourself."

"She won't need it. Dryst will make sure nothing happens to her," Noel added.

Merriot smiled before getting into the carriage and taking a seat. Dryst came back with with two squirrels in simple leather armor that was sturdy enough to fend off most blows. They gave a bow when arriving next to Noel.

"My lord, this is Shu and Rolf," Dryst said.

"It is an honor to serve the Star Sybil," they both said.

"Make sure nothing happens to her," Noel said sternly.

"We will guard her with our lives."

Dryst entered the carriage and took a seat in front of Merriot as Shu and Rolf sat on top of the carriage, Shu grabbing the reins of the horses as they pranced about.

"May the gods watch over you my daughter," Noel said.

"Thank you dad."

With a couple of whistles, the carriage took off down the road as Noel and Sun watched it disappear into the distance. Sun reached over and took Noel's hand into hers and give it a squeeze.

"I hope nothing happens to her," Sun said with a soft whine.

"Dryst is a capable warrior. He can handle most things. They'll be fine. In the meantime, we better get things ready over on this side," Noel said with a stern face.

The carriage creaked down the dirt road at a steady pace, Merriot watching the scenery pass by in silence.

"Are you okay Sybil?" Dryst asked.

"I'm fine. Just thinking."

"Care to discuss it? Maybe that'll help."

She looked at him through the corner of her eyes before back out the window.

"Just thinking about Devil. I was hoping he would stay and teach father's soldiers his magic. It would be very helpful."

Dryst let out a humph before crossing his arms and sitting back.

"Thinking of that stupid human huh? I don't think he's anything special. You should forget about that thing. He's back where he belongs and you're back where you belong."

"Now you know why I didn't want to say anything to you," she said with a slight growl. "You act just like my father. Not all humans are bad."

Dryst folded his ears at her tone.

"My apologies Sybil. I shouldn't have made you upset."

"Forget about it," Merriot said, giving a small smile.

The carriage rolled along smoothly as they watched the scenery together in silence. Merriot eyes started to get heavy before letting out a yawn and rested her head on the pillow before passing out. The sudden stop of the carriage jolted her from her sleep as Dryst managed to catch her.

"What happened?" Merriot asked.

"I'm about to find out," Dryst said getting out. "Why have you stop?"

He got his answer when he saw a band of thieves blocking the path.

"Stand aside vagabonds. Do you know who you are dealing with?"

"We know exactly who we are dealing with," a fox said with a smile, spinning the dagger he had in his paw. "You have the Star Sybil in there. Lord Dinaden is expecting her. So hand her over and nothing will happen to you."

Shu and Rolf dropped to the ground off the carriage and stood beside Dryst.

"What can the six of you do against three trained knights?" Rolf asked.

The fox smiled before snapped his fingers. Out of the foliage around them, more thieves appeared and had the carriage surrounded.

"Like I said, hand her over and nothing will happen."

Dryst drew his sword and stood ready, a growl emitting from his throat.

"You'll get her over my dead body."

A sharp pain exploded in his side making him yelp and drop the sword to the ground. Looking to his left, he saw the dagger that was sticking out of his side and Shu walking towards the thieves.

"Shu!? What is the meaning of this?" Rolf said, shock on his face.

"Dinaden paid me good gold for the Sybil. Enough to get me out of debt and live a carefree life."

"You.....would betray.....Lord Noel?" Dryst said, feeling the blood rush out of him as he held his side.

"Nothing personal Dryst. I needed the gold and this was the best way to do."

"You will pay for this treachery," Rolf said, drawing his sword and charging Shu.

He didn't get far as three arrows lodged right in back dropping him to the ground. Merriot rushed out and knelt next to Dryst.

"Dryst, are you okay?"

"The dagger's deep, but not deep enough. I.....said they wouldn't get you," Dryst said, reaching for his sword but yelped as an arrow lodged into his shoulder.

"Stop trying to resist and you'll get no more injuries," Shu said with a smile.

"Sybil, you.....have to run for it."

"I won't leave you like this. You'll bleed to death," Merriot whined.

"Better I....die then they....capture you."

Merriot shook her head before standing in front of Dryst holding the dagger her mom gave her.

"I won't let you hurt him or take me."

All the thieves laughed at her making her growl, her tails beginning to glow as her paw got covered with a blue light. Shu saw this before tossing an iron ball forward. It exploded when it made contact on the ground releasing a cloud of gas as Merriot coughed. She felt weak, like something was draining her power making her go to her knees.

"Naughty naughty Star Sybil. We can't have you getting frisky. Okay boys, bag her up and let's collect," Shu smiled.

They were too far for help and Dryst wouldn't survive much longer. Merriot closed her eyes and let out a whine, her thoughts going to Devil. If only he was here now.

////////

Devil let out a sigh as he finished sweeping up the dead leaves. The dojo was deathly quiet without Iga around. Usually he would be watching Devil train, feeding the goldfish or just talking to pass the time. It just felt lonely. He heard people coming towards him, one of them was Endo cause he was the loudest.

"Hey Devil, how are you holding up?" Endo asked.

"I'll survive," Devil replied.

"You want to hang out with us? Maybe a change of scenery would do you good."

"I'll pass."

"Come on Devil why are-"

"I said, I'll pass."

Endo raised his hands in defeat before turning around.

"Come on fellas, lets go."

He heard the footsteps get farther away before he started sweeping again. Suddenly, his tattoo started to glow as he looked at it in confusion.

"What's going on?"

Images flashed in his head briefly showing Merriot surrounded and in trouble. He shook his head before grunting.

"Why should I care about some weird animals?"

Masamune appeared in front of him, floating in the air as he looked at it.

"What do you want from me? Humans don't belong in that world."

He tried to move around it, but it blocked his path every time as he let out a sigh. Then he remembered what Iga told him before leaving. Find your destiny in life.

"Destiny huh? Is my destiny to become a walking animal? Where did my life go wrong?"

He looked at Masamune as it glowed brightly.

"Even if I did want to go help her, how would I get there? I don't have that kind of magic. Listen to me, I'm talking to a sword. Now I know I'm going crazy."

Dropping the broom, he grabbed Masamune out of the air before drawing the blade, the hum of power could be felt as the blade was a dark purple. Raising an eyebrow, he made a vertical cut in the air as a veil was cut opened.

"Well, that's new. I guess we'll out if this is my destiny or not."

Putting Masamune back, he hopped into the veil as it closed shut behind him.

///////

Two thieves advanced on Merriot as she sat there, ears folded and feeling weak. They held rope to tie her up along with her tails. Just before they got close, they were stopped in their tracks, encased in a block of ice before shattering to the ground. Everybody looked shock, confusion on their face.

"What the hell is going on?" Shu said.

Streaks of lightning came from the sky, taking out the thieves that surrounded the carriage as they dropped to the ground, holes in their chest where their hearts should be.

"Is this the Sybil's doing? I thought that mixture was suppose to suppress her magic?" the fox asked looking at Shu.

"So did I," Shu replied.

"Might I suggest leaving while you can," a voice spoke up.

Merriot's ears perked up at that. It couldn't be him? It wasn't possible.

"Why don't you show yourself and face us like a real man," Shu said angrily.

Devil dropped his spell, appearing in front of Merriot as his arms were crossed. They looked at him in confusion before growling.

"And just who the hell are you?" Shu said angrily.

"Wouldn't you like to know," Devil replied as his tail twitched back and forth.

"Think your hot stuff huh? Come on boys, show him what happens to people who go against the Phantom Gang."

The remaining thieves took a hold of their weapons and charged Devil who smiled. He drew Masamune slowly and started walking towards Shu. As the rushing mob got closer, he flew towards Shu, Masamune swinging fluidly in his hands before he pointed the tip of the blade at Shu's neck. The mob of thieves who were charging him, stood still for a minute before dropping to the ground. Shu swallowed hard, noticing the blood that coated the blade which was inches from his adam's apple. The fox watched with wide eyes before taking off, leaving Shu alone.

"Now then, shall I kill you now or later?" Devil said with a toothy grin.

"Hey now, let's just calm down. Talk about this. It's obvious you have skill. There's no need for further violence right?" Shu said nervously.

Devil smiled, using Shu's shirt to wipe the blood off Masamune before sheathing it.

"Your right. Once people find out you betrayed Merriot, I won't have to lift a finger against you."

Shu swallowed at that. He was hoping to get as far away as possible before anybody found out what he did. He took a couple of steps back before making a hasty retreat. Devil chuckled before turning around, only to be met with a strong hug catching him off guard.

"Devil, I'm so glad to see you," Merriot whined happily.

Devil stood there, unsure about what to do before slowly reaching around and hugging her back. It felt weird to hug an animal, but was somewhat pleasant.

"How did you get here?" Merriot asked, breaking the hug.

"I'm still not sure myself. But I'll tell you later once we help your buddy," Devil said walking over to Dryst.

Dryst opened his eyes slowly, feeling a hand on his shoulder as he looked up.

"You!? How....did you get.....back here?"

"I wouldn't worry about me at the moment. Can you stand?"

Dryst nodded his head before getting up with help from Devil. He didn't want to admit it, but without his help, Merriot would be in Dinaden's hands.

"Where's the nearest town at?" Devil asked.

Dryst looked around at his surroundings before speaking up.

'We're on....La Theine plateau. Nearest town is Dinsford.......about ten minutes if you.....follow the trail."

"Then I guess that's where we're going. Merriot, can you heal him?"

"No. Somehow my magic has been suppressed," Merriot said sadly.

"Fun stuff. Alright, I'll help him into the carriage and do what I can. Can you drive?"

She nodded her head as Devil helped Dryst into the carriage. Grabbing the reins, she started the horse down the path as Devil did his best to keep Dryst stable. Reaching the town, people stared in shock to see the Star Sybil in person.

"Where's the nearest healer?" she asked.

"The healer's house is down the hill next the spreading chestnut tree," a bulldog replied.

"Thank you," she said with a bow.

Reaching the house, she stopped the horses and jumped to the floor, opening the carriage door. Devil helped Dryst out carefully as they walked up to the front door. A saint bernard opened the door, its eyes going wide to see the injured Dryst.

"Heavens, bring him in quickly."

Walking in, Devil helped him to the spare room and laying him down on the bed, a whine coming from him. The bernard hurried in to look him over along with Merriot.

"Is he going to be okay?" Merriot asked.

"The wound isn't too deep so he should be okay with some rest and my medicine. I'll have to ask you to wait outside while I help him."

They nodded their heads as they left the room. Devil let out a sigh as leaned against the wall. Merriot took a seat on one of the chairs before looking at Devil.

"Thank you again Devil. That's twice you saved me."

Devil gave her a smile before closing his eyes.

"I guess I'm just a softy."

It was quiet for a bit before the bernard came back out holding lots of bloody bandages and what was left of Dryst's shirt.

"Well, I stabilized his bleeding and wrapped him up. I also gave him some medicine to ease the pain and put him to sleep. What happened to him?"

"We were attacked by some thieves calling themselves the Phantom Gang," Merriot replied.

"The Phantom Gang?" the bernard said with shock. "They've been causing this town all kinds of trouble."

"I don't think you have to worry about them anymore."

"How so?"

Merriot looked at Devil and gave him a wink.

"My bodyguard took care of them."

The bernard looked at Devil before back at Merriot.

"I see. Anyway, your friend needs rest and won't be able to do anything strenuous. I suggest staying overnight so I can watch him. I have a spare room and you're welcomed to it."

"Thank you," Merriot said, giving a bow.

Devil gave one last look at Dryst, seeing his waist wrapped up and his chest rising and falling softly. Pushing himself off the wall, he followed Merriot down the hall to the spare room. Inside was a single bed next to the wall along with a dresser. Merriot was on the bed as she turned to see Devil walk in.

"Thank you again Devil. I'm really running up a debt to you."

"Don't worry about it. My master said to always help those in need."

She went quiet before looking out the window. Devil looked at her, the rays of the sun hitting her at the right angle making him blush. Was he really staring at an animal that way? He shook his head as Merriot looked at him.

"By the way, how did you get here?"

He held up Masamune with a sigh.

"This thing forced me to come. Also, for some reason, I had brief images of you in trouble flash in my head."

"You did?" Merriot asked, head tilted in confusion.

"Yeah, it shocked me too. My master told me before he died to find my destiny. I guess my destiny is somehow tied with you. Kind of strange seeing as how we are from different worlds."

She chuckled at that making him blush before a knock was heard.

"I'll have something ready to eat in a bit," the bernard said with a smile.

"Thank you again......oh, I didn't get your name."

"It's Yumi, Star Sybil. I'm just happy to be of service," she replied before heading out.

"What is a Star Sybil?" Devil questioned.

Merriot smiled before looking out the window again.

"Every fifty years, a child is born with the mark of the Sybil," she said, pulling the kimono off her shoulder and showing a star that was black. "That child has the responsibility of taming the power of the demon dragon Fafnir. On the night of the blood moon, that child must use their power to keep Fafnir's power from escaping and destroying our world, and possibly, your world also. I am the new Star Sybil and it's my job to make sure his power stays sealed."

"Sounds rough. What happened to the other Sybils then?"

Merriot went quiet before closing her eyes.

"To quell Fafnir's power, the Sybil must give up their life in order to please him. During the blood moon, the Star Sybil's magical power is at its peak, which is what pleases Fafnir. I guess this is my destiny too. To die to protect millions."

"Do your parents know about that? Isn't there another way?" Devil asked.

Merriot nodded her head.

"They know about it. They didn't like the idea of sending their only child to be sacrificed. Many others lost their child to Fafnir, but it was the only way," she said sadly before continuing. "The only other way, is to have him possess your body and kill the host. But in doing so, you still damn the world cause Fafnir's power only lives for death and destruction. And if the host is powerful enough to control him and not lose his mind and will, it'll be a disaster."

"Damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Great choices," Devil said sarcastically.

"I have no regrets in being the Sybil. Travelling to the different kingdoms and seeing how happy the towns folks are makes me joyful that I'm helping them."

"But what about you?"

Merriot looked at him in confusion.

"What do you mean?"

"What about your happiness? Is this what you truly want? There are so many things out there to see and do. You're too young to be throwing it all away."

"I never really thought of it like that."

"Of course you haven't. You've been letting routine fill your head. I'm sure there's some other way to deal with this dragon's power without the loss of life?"

She lowered her head in thought before looking at him.

"I don't know if there is another way."

"Then I'll help you look for it."

Her ears perked up at that comment.

"You.....you will?"

"Of course. I would hate to see someone as cute as you die."

Devil let out a gasp and covered his mouth. What the hell was he saying? But looking at Merriot now, the way the kimono hugged her body and brought out the beauty of her fur. Her six tails waving happily behind her along with the blush on her cheeks just screamed cute.

"Thank you Devil," she said softly.

"Um....my pleasure," Devil replied, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.

"Food is ready whenever you want to eat," Yumi said from the kitchen.

"Shall we eat?" Devil asked with a smile.

Merriot nodded her head and walked out the room with Devil behind her. Thanking Yumi for the food, they ate with idle chatter. Once that was done, Merriot took the chance to walk around the town, Devil right beside her as the villagers greeted her with simple gifts and flowers. The sun started to set before they made it back to Yumi's house. She took the liberty of leaving some clothes for Merriot to wear and a towel for the shower. After a brief wash off, she sat on the bed combing her tails, humming a small tune. Devil walked in with a small groan.

"I don't think I can take having all this fur. It's a pain to dry and I look silly."

"You'll get use to it," Merriot chuckled, tossing him the comb as he combed himself.

She climbed under the covers and laid down with a sigh.

"What a great start to my journey. I hope I get no more surprises."

"You never know," Devil replied, having combed his fur down to some good extent. "You have a good night's rest. I'll see you tomorrow morning."

She let out a small whine making Devil stop at the door.

"What's wrong?"

"Where are you going to sleep?"

"On the couch."

"There's enough room here for two. No need to be uncomfortable for my sake."

Devil's heart started beating fast as he blushed.

"Are......you sure Merriot?"

"Of course."

Devil rubbed the back of his neck before walking hesitantly over and getting into the bed with Merriot. The stars filled the night sky as Devil stared at them through the window, his mind going a mile a minute. He tensed feeling one of Merriot's tails wrap around his leg.

"Um.....Devil?" Merriot said softly.

"Yeah?"

"Do you think I can......hold you? It'll help me sleep better."

"Um...sure, I guess."

The bed shifted as Merriot moved closer, hooking one leg over his. She threw her arm around him, resting her head under his chin as she let out a murr. Devil shivered, feeling her soft breath wash over his chest. His mind didn't know what to do. With a small swallow, he slowly put his arm around her, getting a happy sigh in response as she tightened her hold. He some how felt comfortable for some reason. With a smile, he closed his eyes and was fast asleep.

///////

Dinaden looked at the night sky, smiling as the moon's drew closer together. Tomorrow night was the night that he will become a god. His ears twitched as he turned to see the lynx on one knee.

"Well Luther?"

"Shu failed."

Dinaden turned around, rage in his eyes.

"How the hell did he fail? He had the Sybil right in the palm of his hand. What the hell happened?"

"Some wolf appeared and defeated them single-handedly."

"Do you know who this wolf is?"

Luther shook his head.

"I never seen him before my lord. But he is very skilled in fighting and uses magic that I'm unfamiliar with."

"Unfamiliar magic? What did this wolf look like?"

"Pure black, navy blue chest, ears, and tail along with jade eyes."

Dinaden started to pace back and forth, a steady growl in his throat that made Luther shiver.

"Guess it's time I used the more direct approach."

"My lord?" Luther asked confused.

"If I can't get the Sybil to come to me, then I'll just go to the Sybil myself."

He smiled widely, showing the powerful set of teeth that gleamed in the moonlight.

"I should've thought of this beforehand."

"But my lord, what about the kingdom and your troops? What will they do in your absence? Or if something was to happen to you?"

"You forget how I became king Luther," Dinaden said, a smile on his muzzle as he held up his hand before it got covered in fire. "I'm more than just a pretty face."

"But where will you go?"

"To the only place she has to go. And when she tries to seal Fafnir's power away, I'll make my move."

"Shall I tell Caldor your plan?"

"No. I need him watching over my troops. Do you not have faith in my magic?"

"I didn't say that my lord. I prefer having some kind of bodyguard with you."

Dinaden smiled before walking over and resting a hand upon Luther's shoulder.

"Do not worry Luther. For when I return, I will be a god, and the world will be mine."

"Dryst, are you sure you should be moving around like this?" Merriot asked.

Dryst looked at Merriot with a smile before standing up gingerly.

"I may not be hundred percent, but I will get you to Behemoth's Domain. I promised lord Noel that much."

He looked towards Devil and bowed his head slightly.

"Thank you for helping the Sybil and myself. I also want to apologize for my behavior towards you."

Devil waved his hand dismissively.

"Don't worry about it. Water under the bridge. How much further to this Behemoth's Domain?"

"We should be there when the blood moon is full in the night sky."

Devil nodded his head before looking at Merriot.

"Are you ready to go?"

She nodded her head with a smile before turning to Yumi and giving her a hug.

"Thank you for everything Yumi."

"It was my pleasure Star Sybil. Anything for you. Your horses and carriage are all set and ready to go."

Dryst got up steadily, holding his side as he breathed lightly and followed Devil and Merriot outside where all the villagers were waiting for them.

"Thank you for all your hospitality," Merriot said with a bow before hopping into the carriage followed by Devil.

Dryst climbed to the top before grabbing the reins and giving a couple whistles for the horses to move. Merriot gave a final wave before settling back in the seat.

"Quite popular aren't you?" Devil chuckled.

"Very," Merriot replied with a smile.

Devil watched the scenery go by before Merriot spoke up.

"So Devil, tell me about yourself."

"Um.....what would you like to know?"

"Well, anything you feel comfortable telling me. Tell me about your parents."

Devil rubbed his chin before sighing.

"They separated when I was five. I stayed with my mom until she died from illness. When that happened, I moved into a shelter and turned into a delinquent. When I turned twelve, I tried robbing a house which belonged to master Iga. He took me in and trained me for eight years. Those were the happiest days of my lives."

Devil smiled remembering those days of hard training, sore muscles, and getting up at the crack of dawn via a bucket of ice water.

"What kind of magic was that? I've never seen that kind before."

"Its called ninjutsu from the Koga style. It can be used as an offensive weapon or a defensive tool depending on the situation. The sacred sword Masamune is given to those that are named successor of the Koga style," he said, showing Merriot.

She held it gently, feeling the power it had making her tails twitch.

"Master Iga named me successor before he died. He taught me everything he knew, saying he was proud that I mastered it as quick as I did."

Merriot could hear the sadness in his voice as she gave Masamune back.

"I'm sorry again about Iga. I know he meant alot to you."

"What's done is done. He said that he lived his life to the fullest and now its time for me to do the same."

"He sounds like a great person."

"He was," Devil said with a sad smile.

They went quiet before Devil spoke up again.

"Have you ever seen a cherry blossom tree in full bloom before?"

"No, I haven't."

"Tell you what, when this is over, how about I show you? It's a beautiful sight to behold."

"That sounds lovely. I can't wait."

"Then it's a promise. Shake on it," Devil said holding his hand out.

Merriot smiled before shaking his hand. They shared some more idle chatter before noticing the sky starting to turn dark as Dryst spoke up.

"Behemoth's Domain is coming into sight Sybil."

They looked out the window into the background. A large mountain was in the distance, ominous dark clouds swirling at the peak with small streaks of lightning flashing here and there. Merriot shivered, feeling the terrible malice even from this distance.

"This is where the other Sybil's come to sacrifice themselves to Fafnir? How scary."

"I won't let that happen. We'll figure something out."

Merriot gave a weak smile as the carriage moved on. The lush green forest they were accustomed to, started to change to a grey, desolate area. No kind of vegetation could be seen, or wildlife for that matter. It seems like whatever was up in that mountain, was not much of a nature lover.

"Look, you can see the blood moon in the sky," Dryst said.

They both looked out, seeing the crimson red moon shining in the sky, even through the thick, swirling clouds. Merriot could feel the power running through her making her shiver. The carriage came to a stop near a long wooden bridge that lead to the mountain. A large bed of water was underneath the bridge, if you could call it water from the looks of it. Devil got out, helping Merriot down as they looked forward.

"That bridge will take you to Behemoth's Domain. I'm sorry I can't accompany you any further Sybil."

"It's okay Dryst. Thank you for all your hard work," Merriot said.

Dryst looked at Devil and nodded his head.

"Thank you also Devil. Please look after her for me."

Devil gave a thumbs up making Dryst smile. Taking the reins, he spun the carriage around and headed back the way he came. They watched him disappear into the horizon before turning towards the mountain.

"Are you ready?" Devil asked.

"Yes. Let's do this."
