#1 of Finding One's True Self Webseries

So I'm going to be writing a web series here to help pass writer's block on the novels I'm officially working on that I intend to publish.

Finding Ones True Self is a series about one man, one furry. Finding his place in the universe.

This is a complete rework of the first chapter, as I wanted to know how far my writing skills have come since I first started this series.

Cutting Too Deep

By Xan Steel

Out story begins in the year 2169. A time in which Earth is facing its greatest turmoil, and has been facing for the last 100 years. Earth is divided. Two forces wage war on the surface. Religion and Science. One that was in search of the truth to the universe and the other believed in the superstitions of the past. Both sides split the landscape as all of the world's scientists moved to a neutral country that accepted them and allowed them to continue working. The scientists had set up barriers and lines of defense to protect themselves for the onslaughts of the religious zealots, and fanatics. In all of this, one man's attempt to find happiness is always fleeting.

Daniel is a typical Astrophysicist with a PHD in Mechanical Engineering. Loved comics, new tech, space, and furry. He had his own suit. Which was a cross between a wolf and a deer. He had never really given the species a name, but his character was named Rubicant Tavar. He had a number of furry friends, but sadly he was becoming more and more withdrawn from them as his happiness slowly faded into depression.

He loved the sciences as much as his slightly older sister, Maria. Who had two PHDs, one in Bioelectrical Engineering, and the other in Baseline DNA Constructs. She was more into her work than anything. While she wasn't into furry herself. She knew it gave Daniel some happiness and accepted it. Though she never had the privilege of seeing him in suit.

Both of them having been disowned by their parents for not believing in a religion of any kind had really hurt them. They moved in together after they left the home they had grown up in. Their new place was a bit tight, but together they made it work, even if privacy was a bit of a luxury.

Over the course of the six years they had been living together in their little place. Maria started to notice Danial becoming more reclusive. They would always have dinner together and relax in the living room until they retired for the night. But lately he had not been eating and started working longer hours to avoid her. She was getting worried about him.

One night she returned home from work and noticed none of the lights had been turned on. As she walked up to the front door, the outside light turned on automatically as it always did. She unlocked the door and walked in carefully. She turned on the living room lights, but they didn't turn on. She smelled a faint metallic scent in the air that she immediately recognized. She grabbed a small flashlight from her medical bag and a tourniquet kit. "Daniel! Daniel where are you!" She yelled and began shining the light around. She didn't see him in the living room and moved into the kitchen. There in a pool of his own blood she found him lying on the floor with his wrists slit. "Oh god Daniel why?!" She exclaimed and moved in to tie off his arms above the slits. Once finished she called emergency services out to their place.

Later that night at the hospital. They had managed to repair the damage to his arms with a new medical scanner that amplified the bodies natural healing process by a factor of fifty. Now they had to wait for the blood transfusion to complete. She stayed with him the whole time. She was always so emotionally strong, but this time she couldn't be. She just let go and cried next to him in Intensive Care Unit. She couldn't lose the only family member she had left.

Morning came as she had slept the night there in a reclining chair they had brought in for her. Danial slowly woke up and was confused as to where he was. After looking around the room, he realized he was in the hospital and suddenly remembered what he did the night before and why. He started to weep heavily as he couldn't move his arms to well. Maria woke up to the sound of him crying and went to him. "Danial, relax I'm here for you." "I'm sorry." He croaked through his tears. She held him as best as she could to give him a hug. "It's alright Danny, everything's going to be fine. Just take it easy okay." She said as she continued to hold him close to comfort him. "No I'm not fine." He said as he continued to weep in her arms. "I didn't want you to find me and bring me back." He confessed. This hurt her. Not because she didn't feel that he didn't love her, but because she didn't know what was causing his unhappiness, and was losing him. "What's wrong?" She asked. He didn't answer and only wept harder in her arms. "Danny, help me, help you please. I can't lose you. Is it something I did?" She asked him. He shook his head in her arms to answer her. "No, I'm just not happy on this planet anymore." He said while trying to work his right arm. "Stupid, stupid arm. Work damn you." He started to yell, as he brought over his right hand that had a crumpled paper in it and handed it to her. She took it and began to read it.

It was covered in profanity from their father. He hated them both. And blamed them both for their mother's death, when they tried to have more kids to replace them. He swore that if he ever saw them he would kill them. To him they were useless good for nothings.

The letter cut deep, but she pushed back her growing anger and tossed the letter into a biohazard incinerator. She turned back to Danial and kissed his cheek. "Is that what's been bothering you?" She asked calmly. He nodded as he leaned back into her arms again. "Well you don't have to worry about a stranger. I've been living with the idea we never knew our parents, and grew up in a orphanage together. Always looking out for one another." She replied softly to him as she continued to hold him. That idea actually made him feel a bit better. "Thank you for being there." He said. "I'll always be there for you if you need anything. I love you Danny." "I love you to sis." He replied as he tried to wrap his arms around her softly.
