#4 of Chronicling Memew: Convergence

"Freedom is illusion..."

Memew looked over Sef. He hadn't woken up yet and it had been a few days. Granted she did tend to go out and roam sometimes and he might have awoken during those times, but he hadn't woken up while she's been here, staring at him.

Currently Memew sat just inside the opening of the little alcove she and Sef now lived. Looking out to the squared supports that seemed to hold up the sides of the strange canyon and taking in the details. There was little color to be seen. Just the boring color that many boring stones had, gray. A dull gray.

Leaning out of the alcove a little she looked to the sides and noticed there were openings in the smooth gray walls only on the opposite side if this canyon. Looking up it the thing that her and Sef's new home was hidden by. She could see that it had some bright colors.

Furrowing her brow. She wondered why she'd never looked at the thing before. Maybe it was the jittery feeling that she had from being in a strange place. The feeling was less now. So that was probably the reason.

Suddenly a thought occurred to her as she looked out across the canyon again. The was a ledge outside one of the openings that was straight across from this giant changing picture. Lifting her paws off the ground she rotated herself to bring her head back inside. Looking to Sef for a moment before she glanced back to the ledge. Then back to Sef again.

Her focus going back and forth for a few moments before she eventually settled on a decision. Slipping inside the makeshift home. She picked up two of the bottles of water she'd found. Strange and flexible, and light bottles. Then she picked up a bottle of a sweet brown liquid. She didn't like how this one looked at first. Then she got curious.

Next she picked up an open bag of crunchy things. Well not exactly crunchy, but not soft or squishy. They were sorta hard and mushy... and breaky. Looking into the bag she grabbed it in her mouth before handing the bottles off to her tail. Coiling it around each of them thrice. Then she took the bag in her hands again.

Her tongue poked out as she reached into the bag and then she frowned. Extracting her hand she tipped the bag upside down. Whining a bit as nothing fell out. She tossed the bag aside as she said, "I thought I had some of those munchy thingies left..." Looking around the small space and beginning to dig through the piled bags in the corner.

"Come on, precious!" Memew cried as she dug through the trash she'd accumulated. After a few moments she let out a joyful squeal as she came up with a half full bag. "YES!! I knew it! I still had some." Grinning as she pulled the bag to her chest and then took off to the spot she'd seen.

When she landed on the ledge that wasn't all that far away. She set down her bag of snacks, the bottle of brown juice and both the water bottles. Smiling she then turned and sat down. Her tail hanging off the edge at her side as she grabbed the bag of snacks. Placing it in her lap as she then took in the giant picture.

Currently it looked like the picture that was on the bags of that munchy stuff. A colorful rabbit holding her arm out over an image of the snack. They were little brown oval things. There were words there too, but Memew didn't understand them. So she didn't pay them any attention.

The next picture had the same bunny. This time the bunny was behind the snack. This one was a selection of brightly colored carrots. This picture was very vibrant and colorful. "Ooh... I want some of those..." Memew murmured as she looked at the picture. Kicking her legs a bit as she got excited about the possibility of finding some of those sweet looking treats.

As she observed the pictures a sudden harsh metallic voice called out from below. "Surrender, or lethal force will be applied." Memew looked down to the source of the voice and say a big metal person thing. It seemed to be staring at her as it held out a hand.

Staring at it she then asked, "Why? What am I doing?" Its hand then opened up and folded back as something protruded from where the hand had been. Answering her by saying, "Undocumented pet. Surrender to this automated enforcement unit or face lethal retribution."

Memew frowned and said, "I'm not a pet! I'm Memew!" The protrusion from where its hand had been flashed and Memew screamed out in pain. Fire seemed to burn inside her shoulder. She hadn't even seen what it hit her with. Just that its metal stick thingy had flashed.

The metal man then stated, "Obligated mercy shot fired. Initiating kill sequence." Its weapon then flashed again and Memew swiftly reacted by trying to move out of the way, but she wasn't fast enough and her stomach flared up in fiery pain. She began to cry as she shouted, "Stop it!!" Her only answer being another flash. She acted again and started to fly away.

She could feel the burning in her left thigh. Joining the burning on the left side of her stomach and her left shoulder. All those pained spots seemed to stretch deep into her body, and as consumed with fear as she was. She didn't bother to examine her wounds. Terror filled her as she flew up for the top of the canyon across from the ledge she had been resting on.

Another burst of burning pain erupted in her belly as she neared the ridge. Tears dripped from her cheeks as she strove for safety. To escape this intense pain spreading across her body. Yet before she made it to safety the machine took one last shot at her. This time something told her to curve her body towards the left instead of the right.

Instead of being burnt again. She had avoided the shot and then swung over the edge. Slamming onto the ground on her back as she began to sob. Wailing in pain as she gingerly touched her shoulder wound. Trying to figure out how bad it was. There was a circle where she couldn't feel the touch of her fingers. It felt different to her touch too. She looked down towards it as she whimpered. The fur there was falling out.

Then her clawtip touched the edge of the wound. She screamed as the touch sent a tremendous surge of pain through her. Her hands striking the stone surfaces at either side of her. Balled into fists as she clenched her jaw. The four wounds were becoming more and more sensitive as she lay there.

A sudden voice brought her attention away from her pain. "Undocumented pet. Surrender yourself or face retribution." Memew rolled on instinct. Crying out as burning pain lanced diagonally across her back as she had rolled. The monster then repeated its statement. Pointing its weapon at Memew again.

She turned and began to fly away as she cried, "Leave me alone!! I didn't do anything!!" Reaching her arms out in front of herself as she raced away. Obeying the twinges that she somehow felt right before its every attempt to hurt her. She didn't understand the sensation, but it helped her not get hurt so she didn't bother to question it.

She saw another of those canyons up ahead and looped in the air to avoid a strike before she made a beeline for the canyon. The metal man chasing after her at a surprising pace. She glanced over her shoulder as she neared the ledge. Letting out a squeak as she saw the metal man closing in on her.

When she reached the ledge she hugged the wall after she flew over the edge. Looking around as she suddenly realized that she couldn't keep going straight. Flying towards the ground as she struggled to determine a followup course of action, but the ground neared and she had to stop before she thought of anything.

Before she could think any further the metal man landed in front of her. He was much larger then her and pointed his weapon at her face saying, "Surrender, undocumented pet. Further resistance will result in death."

Memew was frozen as she stared at the instrument that led to the pain radiating through her body. If she wasn't scared for her life the pain would be the only thing she'd be able to focus on, but in this situation it seemed less painful then it actually was.

Her breathing was rapid as she stared at the metal man. Its silver body was dull as Memew couldn't help but examine it. She was unable to bring herself to move and she was stuck staring at it. Her eyes drifting from its blocky head to its super complicated looking legs.

It then repeated its command. In the exact same tone it had previously used. Memew whimpered a bit as she slowly regained use of her limps. Pulling them close to her body as her gaze focused on the stick that she assumed it was using to hurt her. This metal protrusion was conical and had several thick metal bands along it.

Memew swallowed and glanced from side to side for a moment before the metal man moved forwards and grabbed her by the neck with its unchanged hand. Forcefully slamming her against the wall behind her as it repeated its command once more.

The feline's ears rang as her mind swirled about. The impact disorienting her and bringing a new pain into the mix. It wasn't until the metal mans next iteration of its command when it placed its weapon under her chin. Memew sputtered as she grabbed the hand gripping her neck. Tears streaming from her wide terror filled eyes.

Her hanging cheek tufts hung limply as they dripped with tears. She didn't know what it wanted or why it was doing this. After a moment of terror she sobbed, "I... I don't know... wh-wh-what y-you wa-a-a-ant!" Kicking her paws against the wall as her tail coiled around the arm her hands were uselessly tugging on.

The metal man then tilted its head and said, "Surrender." Memew cried out in fear before she responded, "I don't know what you mean!!" Squirming in its iron grip as she became frantic. Attempting to add her paws to her hands' and tail's effort to extricate herself. The arm with the weapon attached began to whirr and Memew screamed as nearly invisible arcs of orange energy began to race over her body.

They made tiny little pops as they popped into existence for fractions of an instant at a time. Rising in frequency as Memew's panic rose. The weapon aimed at her head sparked with a couple arcs of that energy. Then half a second later it exploded.

Memew screamed as shrapnel flew outwards from beneath her chin. Several of the low velocity pieces burying themselves in shallow wounds. The metal man turned its attention to the damage as sparks began to travel along its body. Neck twitching a bit as it stated, "Warning, threat detected." A tiny bird like device them launched from the metal man's back and flew away.

Focusing on Memew again as it stated, "Damaging corporate property forfeits ones right to mercy." The metal hand gripping at her neck then squeezed tightly. Memew's mouth shot open as she suddenly couldn't move any air in or out of her lungs.

Pressure seeming to build up in her face and head as the grip around her neck popped some vertebra with its tightness. Starting to feel like her neck was going to break under the force applied. Her struggles began to lessen as her strength began to drain away. Her eyelids beginning to flutter as all consciousness aside her basic instincts faded.

The arcing threads of orange energy suddenly increased in intensity. Puffs of smoke drifting from her form wherever this energy actually touched her body. Leaving behind burns that began to heal shortly after. The other wounds on her body were accelerating in their own healing as they sparked with this orange energy. The cooked tissues being destroyed so that new tissues could take its place.

Meanwhile the metal man was beginning to smoke as smaller arcs of that orange energy traveled across it. Its body sizzling as electronic components inside it began to burn away. A thick burst erupted from the elbow of its intact arm as that motor blew out. More bursts followed in the wrist and each finger joint.

Memew fell to the ground as the metal mans hand went limp and useless. It staggered back saying, "Danger... danger... power surge... danger... circuits... surge... s-sur-ge dashpenents... mal-mal-function..." Its remaining functional joints beginning to twitch as further thick eruptions of smoke floated up from its body.

The machine fell to the ground as a motor in its hip became fried. Its speech devolving into sounds so disjointed that any meaning was lost to any that could hear it. Then warning flaps popped open all over its body. The insides of the flaps were covered in black and yellow stripes as the red lights the flaps had covered began to flash. A warning buzzer sounding off with each flash.

Memew didn't notice what was going on with the metal man as the sudden return of blood clouded her mind. A pleasant sensation cascaded through her mind and then through her body. She couldn't quite tell is she was conscious or not, or even how long this feeling had lasted. All she knew was that as she came back to awareness. The feeling from her wounds and injuries came back first.

The pain reverberated through her. The severe burns on her chest stomach leg and back along with her bruised neck enveloped her in pain. A groan escaping her lips before she even began to register sound, and when she began to register sound a recurring buzzing noise was what dominated her hearing.

It came in bursts and helped slowly pull Memew towards awareness and the next sense she became aware of was smell. The scent of blood was all she could smell. Though it wasn't outside her nose. She could feel her breathing moving it around inside her sinuses and she could feel it dampening her nostrils. She could even taste it.

Finally she opened her eyes. They were red from hemorrhages and her neck had swollen up into a deep purple. She pushed herself up and stared towards the ground as her mind remained blank. Everything she was sensing flowing through her head without gaining purchase. Unable to get her attention as she hadn't recovered her consciousness.

When things began to sink in. The buzzing had begun to become more urgent. Looking around urgently as she snapped out of her stupor. She noticed the ruined metal man. The red lights were blinking dangerously fast and then the rapid buzzing became a constant screech. Memew suddenly took off vertically.

Mere moments after she took off the metal man exploded. Its explosion quickly enveloped her, but a bubble of orange energy shielded her from the brunt of the impact. The bubble however, shattered as Memew was hurled away from the explosion. The buildings around the explosion crumpled as it spread upwards and along the disused streets.

Memew let out a soft whine as she awoke. Rolling over, she suddenly gasped as whatever it was she'd been on ended before she completed her roll. Groaning, she pushed herself up and glanced around. She seemed to be in a room of some kind. Though she couldn't see any wood. So she couldn't really imagine how someone would shape something like this... and it was just white and gray.

She floated up to the ceiling and touched it. It felt like stone... smooth rough stone. She stroked her fingers along it as she tried to decide whether it was rough or smooth. Her tail swaying beneath her as she remained ignorant of her healed wounds.

After some time she'd moved on to a rectangular thing on the wall. It was black and at the right angle it was shiny. "Ooh..." Memew whispered as she tapped at the thing with her claw tip. Her ears twitched at the sound her taps made.

She'd never seen anything like it before. Though as she looked it over she caught a reflection in it. Looking over her shoulder she saw a male fox standing in a doorway. He was looking at her with a blank expression. Watching her in silence for what seemed like forever. Memew found herself able to land on the seat in front of that rectangle thing and make a couple bounces before this fox did anything.

When he moved he went up to the device Memew had been interested in and pressed in a spot beside it. A smaller rectangular device was then ejected from a slot. A small cable connecting the rectangle to the wall. The fox then took the smaller rectangle device to Memew and handed it to her. Telling her, "The red one turns it on and off. The ones with arrows change the channel." He then left her alone.

Memew stared down at the thing she'd been handed and pressed the red button. She squealed out and dashed around behind the seat as the black rectangle suddenly made noise. The small rectangular object bounced off the floor a fraction of a second later. Memew slowly peeked out from behind the seat and blinked as she saw the images on the screen. It was almost like that big picture thing that she was going to watch before...

Her ears dropped and her red eyes widened as she suddenly remembered what had happened. Tears collecting in her eyes as her skin lost color. The memories returned vividly as she could almost feel her flesh being freshly burnt. Touching her chest she looked down. Expecting to see a wound, but she didn't see so much as a scar.

Still the phantom pain persisted as she remembered what had happened with that metal man. Her breathing picked up as she began to tremble a little. Looking around the smallish room for a moment and taking in the sparsely furnished space. All there really was, was that picture rectangle the seat three doors and something else that she didn't recognize. It was a large rectangular device that reached from the floor to the ceiling and had a rectangular picture space that seemed to take up about a third of the rectangle. Below the glowing picture was what looked like a drawer.

Memew glanced to the picture rectangle for a moment before she went to investigate this new thing. Eager to distract herself from her memories. She floated in front of the thing and looked it over. Finding no buttons on it. Blinking a little she curiously pulled open the drawer. The drawer was empty and the interior was lined with something black. It was hard and smooth.

The drawer itself was rather large. Big enough the Memew could sit in it. She reached into the back of the drawer to see if she could find anything up inside this thing. Getting shoulder deep into it before the flat voice of the fox said, "I wouldn't do that."

Memew squeaked and jerked. Fumbling around with her arm deep inside this thing for a moment before she managed to get free. Her arms hugging close to her chest as she looked to the fox and instinctively said, "I wasn't doing anything." He sighed heavily and slowly walked over to the machine. Tapping the screen when he arrived beside it. The outline of a hand appeared on the machine and then the fox placed his hand inside the outline. The machine chirped and stated, "Accessing... Velt Florence's account..."

Memew watched this in increasing awe as this Velt operated the machine. After a few moments and a few inputs from Velt the machine stated, "Creating pet-account... Register pet's bio-print..." Memew watched the fox as he then took her hand and pressed it to the hand outline. The machine then chirped and announced, "Pet registration complete. Select pet's allowance."

Velt then input a few more selections before he looked to Memew and told her, "Now you have access to the Vender." She looked over this 'vendor' before she looked to him and then asked, "And... how would I... um... access it?" Touching the vendor a little after she'd asked her question. As far as she could tell. Using it had something to do with touching it.

The fox sighed as Memew began to randomly touch things. He then placed his hand on her head and told her, "You'll figure it out. Now I will keep you safe, just keep out of trouble." He then turned and headed back to his lab. Ignoring his guest's calls for attention as he left the room she was in. He had more important things to address then her comfort.

Velt sat down at his desk. Looking over the tissue and blood samples that he'd taken from her while she was unconscious. There was something special about her. Her wounds had healed so quickly and he believed that she had something to do with the damage to ring E-Three about a week ago and then the damage to ring E-Five just the day before.

He looked over his samples. Only having taken a few samples from her. All the tests he'd run so far had been inconclusive. They'd been abnormal, but none of them actually narrowed down what the abnormality was. This led him to the conclusion that whatever it was that was unique about her was something that was currently unknown.

The fox brushed his hand over the scars on the left side of his face and sighed. He was running out of time to publish a discovery before the company decided to liquidate him. It was the only way they were allowed to free positions. The rings further out were unaware of this fact. Of course if they knew it would only make keeping the peace that much harder.

Velt sighed and swept several papers and reports off his desk. Scowling as he stared down at the now open surface. The city would just see him as a criminal being executed for dragging down society. That's how they kept order, how they kept people from being unemployed. You can't be fired, just charged with a crime and executed!

Abruptly standing up he swept the rest of his items off the desk. Three days wasn't enough time to make a discovery and publish it! He growled as he stared down at his bare desk. Shouting, "DAMMIT!!" as he then slammed his fists down on the false wood. His growl deepening as he vented his frustration.

Just finding something new wasn't enough. No, he needed to publish a use for it and so far he couldn't even figure out what it was that was special about this creature. Her blood and tissues were special, but HOW?!

He heaved a heavy sigh and then dropped back down into his chair. Quite dejected as he stared at his barren desk. Trying to work out some course of action that he could take to meet his quota in time. His work on stabilizing the SR formula wasn't progressing anywhere near quickly enough for him to complete it in time.

Leaning forwards he began to think about whether he could use the samples he'd gathered to stabilize the formula, but this brought up some problems. One of which being that if it worked, he'd need to supply information on how to replicate the results.

The hissing of the doors hydraulics suddenly grabbed his attention and he glanced over his shoulder. Frowning as he saw his new subject floating in the middle of the doorway looking as though she'd accidentally opened up the earth and couldn't comprehend what it was that had she'd done.

Velt grunted a bit in an inconspicuous attempt to snap her out of her daze. This worked as she started to gesture towards the control pad saying, "I... it was this thing and then I touched it and then noise and..." She blinked several times at that point before she looked around Velt's lab. Saying, "Ooh... this room is different."

The fox sighed and stood up. Walking up to the doorway before he firmly gripped Memew by the scruff and dragged her towards the middle of the main room. She tried to flail before her body went limp against her will. Pouting as she angrily glanced around with her eyes. Helpless to do anything until he dropped her onto the sofa.

She hopped up and leaned against the back as she then jabbed a finger at him shrieking, "Don't you do that!" Looking at him angrily as a high pitched crackling growl emanated from her. A sound that was far from intimidating as her tail whipped about behind her back.

Velt just stared at her with a level expression for several seconds before he said, "Calm down, girl." Rolling his shoulders he glanced to his lab for a moment before returning his attention to Memew and said, "You are not allowed in that room. That room is mine and it is not somewhere that you're allowed."

Memew blinked a bit before she leaned over and then peered past Velt. Her focus shifting to the closing door of the now forbidden room. Growl fading away as her curiosity was peaked. A sharp painful grip on one of her large ears brought her attention back to Velt as he sternly told her, "You are not to go in there. Understood?"

His grip pressing the tips of his claws into the tender skin of her ear. She could only endure it for a few brief moments before she whined, "Okay, okay! Let go!" Jerking away from him as she grabbed her ear and protectively turned her head to put the offended ear further from him.

Silence persisted for some time before Velt grumbled and then decided to try learning from this animal. "How is it that you can float?" Memew looked to him spitefully before she hissed softly and said, "Why would I tell you? You hurt me." The fox pinched the bridge of his muzzle for a moment before he looked to Memew. His patience running thin as he gripped her unprotected ear and then said, "This isn't going to be the worst thing you experience if you don't cooperate."

Memew squealed out in pain as his claws pressed into her tender ear. She grabbed at his hand as she said, "I don't know! I just can! Please let go!" He twisted her ear a bit as he coldly prompted, "Explain." The small feline whimpered, "I... I focus on floating and then I float!" Recoiling as he released her ear. She dove to the floor on the side of the couch that she was on. Standing on all fours with her limbs spread out as she stared at Velt. Her ears pointing back as she growled.

Velt stared at her for a few moments before he grunted and said, "I will question you later." Turning away from her and returning to his lab to ponder a solution to his time sensitive issue.

Sef began to awaken. His head was clouded and he found it difficult to concentrate. He wasn't real sure what was going on as he unconsciously pushed himself up. The slight rolling motion was exaggerated for him and he dry-heaved as the dizziness made him nauseous. Groaning out he struggled to raise his gaze. His vision blurring as he thought he saw movement. Dropping to the hard floor of whatever the location he was in. Staring distantly as he picked up a hissing sound.

He wasn't sure how much time past as he blinked and the lighting seemed different. Feeling a bit better he pushed himself up once more. Simply feeling sick this time instead of trying to expel stomach contents that didn't exist. Looking up he could focus a bit more. There was a clear door in front of him.

Looking around himself he found that he was inside some kind of metal box. Weakly raising his hand. He pressed it to the clear door. His limb dropping as the door effortlessly swung open. Sef pulled himself from the box and dropped to the cold metal flooring outside the box. Laying there listlessly for a few seconds before a voice spoke. A voice that could only be described as a single indistinct tone.

"The brother. You are the key to maintain order." Sef fought to get a look around the room. Having difficulty focusing his vision as he asked, "Who... who's there?" The voice laughed before giving a belittling answer, "Such an insignificant speck doesn't deserve to know my name. You are nothing more then a tool. A means to an end."

Sef growled haltingly as he attempted to harness any level of strength. The voice laughing as it said, "How pitiful. You are so fragile, so weak. Your sister holds power, and is yet still weak. Your desire to protect her. To care for her. That is what will serve my will."

Growling a bit more strongly. Sef found some more strength. Focusing his eyes he looked around the room. Seeking to find whoever it was that was speaking, yet all he found was an empty room. Computer monitors giving off a dim blue glow as the only source of illumination.

"Show yourself!" Sef cried out in a strained voice. He didn't understand what was going on, but the way this strange voice was talking about his devotion to Memew gave him a sinking feeling. The voice suddenly spoke in a clipped fashion, "Silence. You will serve me whether you know it or not." Then blue bolts of energy struck Sef. Burning him as the voice said, "Your future is decided. I will maintain order and you will guarantee that your sister fails."

Sef couldn't maintain consciousness as the bolts of energy overwhelmed him with pain.

"...subjugation is reality."
