Diary of a Planeswalker 5

When I woke up, only the dove was in the room. "Hello. I see you've been enjoying my servant." What? Did he mean Mazurek? "Don't worry, he was a slave that was given to me, while I don't support such practices, left on his own, he would have been caught again. Thus I gave him a purpose, you can keep him if you like." That was kind of him.

"I take it you've come all the way here to find help. To find peace from your inner demon and finally be free of it." I nodded, the thought bringing a sense of elation. "That's what I thought, we are going to extract that demon right out of you and you'll never have to deal with it again."

We spent the next few hours making preparations, gathering herbs, drawing the magic circles, practicing the incantation and rehearsing. It was pretty amazing that Id finally get freed soon.

"Alright, we are going to extract your demon. I tried at one point to kill mine but that didn't work out, I've got a portal for us to leave through though so don't worry."

"Wait... that demon who almost killed Mazurek and I was...?"

"Yes, it's a side effect of the process, but you cant make an omelet without breaking a few eggs."

I was more than a little outraged at this suggestion, the others weren't anywhere nearby, was he going to leave them to be fodder? What the hell is wrong with this lunatic?

"You expect that I'm just going to..."

"Relax..." The dove instructed me. I couldn't resist the sound of his voice, was he binding me to his will? No... this was some kind of manipulation technique, he's using my desire to get rid of that other part of me against me. "There we go. This wouldn't be working on you so effectively if you didn't want what I'm offering. You claim to be outraged but this is what you want. Don't worry though, you'll be completely blameless for this, you couldn't resist my power..."

He started singing and suddenly I relaxed further. Darkness was threatening to consume me this time, he was using a sleeping spell on me. The voice sounded so familiar. I finally started to realize what this creatures voice reminded me of... my mother... the woman who sacrificed her life for me.

She had given her life for me and been there for me when I needed it the most. Her sacrifice resonated with my heart. It was all their fault, horrible evil monsters I started to feel elated that Id be rid of the part of me that made me like the ones who'd killed her.

Suddenly, something I had missed dawned on me, I inherited my demon half from her. She was a demon just like I was... I couldn't just throw away one of the only connections I had left with her. Not only that, but nobody had ever done such a selfless thing for me. She was far more of a demon that I was and yet she did something like that to save me.

"Being a demon doesn't make us evil" I said aloud, climbing out of the darkness. "Not entirely, at least. Its being unable to control our demonic natures that makes us evil but the woman who gave birth to me wasn't evil, the woman who saved my life wasn't a vile or wretched creature at all." I reached out and grabbed his arm. "Sure, it gives us urges and sometimes it seems uncontrollable but the parts of us that aren't demonic give us control."

"It is our ability to love that makes us something more than just mindless demons of chaos and destruction. Its our friendships, our bonds that make us stronger and give us the power to fight it." Some of the magical circles we had been drawing could be re-purposed for summoning, I decided to use one such circle. "You threw away your demon side and that may sound great at first but you let a monster loose just so you wouldn't have to confront your own fears, your weaknesses, your lesser self. That isn't strength, you became the epitome of weakness." I said coldly. I felt pity for him, just not enough to spare him from his own Fortune catching up to him.

A large demon appeared, the one I had defeated, I bound him to my will and begin to combine him with his other half. The feathers began to turn red as bands of black appeared to stain his body. "You can't just run from who you are because when you do that you'll only get others caught up in your battles. Maybe if you were less pathetic, instead of running from it, you would have sought friends and a family to help you combat the darkness inside you. I made the mistake of trying to run too but I wont let this kind of thing define me. This is Fortunes curse on me, but its a blessing too. Whenever I remember the fact that I'm a demon I can remember the strongest person in my life and that will help me fight these evil impulses."

His now golden eyes became speckled with red and for whatever reason his beak broke into a mouth. His entire body began to shake and convulse, I used the opening to begin sealing the two together so that he wouldn't be able to find a way to separate himself again for at least a few thousand years.

"This is the will of Fortune, don't run from it, running from it is what leads to true darkness. I don't know that this lesson I've learned will truly help me, but even if it doesn't, I will bear my fortune proudly and I will not let it define who I am any more."

I wasn't so humble that I didn't picture how awesome I must have looked walking away after a speech like that. Still, I decided that before things got out of hand, I began preparing to open a breach between planes for us to walk through as I located my companions. "We're leaving, as it turns out, what the thing I was searching for was here all along, but not in him, it was in the two of you." I told Raptyr and Mazurek as the portal opened, sucking us in. I was truly happy upon seeing them again. It wasn't just because they were both there waiting for me or because I had come to love them dearly. It was because upon inspecting Mazurek, I couldn't help but sense his pregnancy, he was carrying our clutch.
