#5 of A Little Thing Called Life

So here's Chapter 5. Sorry, but Draco isn't really the subject of this chapter, but rather one of his students. Remember Marco, the well mannered horse who acted out that one time in class? yeah, hes more than just a supporting character, but you'll see what is to come of him... In the next chapter. Sorry if this doesn't flow very well, if you see anything that could stand to be corrected, please let me know, your comments will help me edit this!

"Yes sir, thank you Mr. Blaiz." Marco sat out in the hall alone after punching max square in the maw. He didn't tell Mr. Blaiz exactly what Max had said that upset him so much, as he didn't want to get the chihuahua in trouble, after all it was only intended as a joke.

Max had jokingly called Marco's mother a heffer, which wouldn't have set him off, if his father didn't call her that and worse every night.

He wanted to stand up for her, but he knew if he tried to intervene, his father would beat him even worse than normal, and Marco did get beat daily, sometimes twice daily if the black stallion thought he deserved it.

His father, Bruce Burton, was a heavy alcoholic, and was usually drunk. The man didn't work, he drew unemployment while his mother worked for the rest of the money. What money came from unemployment was used to buy booze, which didn't last long.

He sat out in the hallway until the bell rang, and took off before anyone else could make it out of the classroom.

Marco Burton was a 14 year old horse, a freshman in high school, and usually well behaved and well mannered. He enjoyed most of his classes, with the exception of Math and Social Studies, but his favorite class had to be his theater class. Not because he enjoyed theater, he did, but theater one was tedious.

He enjoyed it so much because of the teacher, Mr. Blaiz. Marco, along with everyone else, seemed to like the new teacher. Something about the tall red dragon made him feel comfortable.

He had made it to his next class in less than a minute, Mr. Shallowater's chemistry class was right next door to his theater class. Mr. Shallowater was almost as cool as Mr. Blaiz, and chemistry was rather fascinating, his only issue with it was the math, which he could do, he just didn't like to.

After what felt like only a short time, school was out and he went to wait for his bus. For the first time since he was in the sixth grade, he enjoyed the bus ride home, as Mr. Blaiz took over his route not long ago.

He sat at the back of the bus keeping to himself. This was normal, because as much as he had come to enjoy the bus ride, it also meant going home, and he never looked forward to that.

He slipped inside the house, trying to pretend he couldn't hear his father yelling vulgarly at his mother and slipped up to his room, pulling out his homework and started reading the assigned chapters in his chemistry textbook, writing a short paper on the atomic structure of a tungsten atom.

He was about halfway through when the he realized that the yelling had stopped for about five minutes. It was at that moment he heard the pounding at his door.

"Boy!! Where do you think you get off sneaking into the house without reporting to your old man??" Bruce yelled as he pounded on the door, threatening to knock it off the hinges.

"S-sorry dad, I just have a lot of homework and wanted to get a head start on it." he said, bracing himself for what he knew was coming. As usual, Bruce opened the door, belt in hand.

"You were supposed to inform me of your arrival boy, you knew that." the drunken black stallion said menacingly raising his belt to strike. The belt hit the younger equine across the stomach, leaving a searing welt in its wake, Marco fell to his knees, raising his arms to block the next blow.

Bruce gave him several licks across the arms, chest, and stomach, each one forming into a fresh bruise.

The marks were easy enough to hide as it was winter and long sleeve shirts were to be expected. The beatings got worse as the next few days went on, the yelling and screaming getting louder.

Things finally progressed to the point that Marco came home one day to find it unusually quiet, and his mom was gone, and Bruce refused to say anything about where she was.

Marco remained hopeful that she would at least contact him, but she never did. It was almost Halloween now, and still no word, and the way Bruce was acting, he was starting to get a very bad feeling about the whole thing.

The beatings continued to get worse, as soon as one bruise would heal, a new one would take its place.

It finally got to the point where he couldn't take any more... If this worked the way he hoped it would, then everything would be alright again.

After the bell one day when he would normally have gone to chemistry, he lingered in his theater classroom until all his classmates were out, and he approached Mr. Blaiz.

"Uhm, excuse me sir, can I talk to you about something?" he asked the dragon sitting behind the desk.

"Yes, of course you can, what can I do for you Marco?" the dragon asked, seeing the look on Marco's face, must have been able to see the tears in his eyes.

"Well, its about my home life... My dad, well he's an alcoholic... and he beats me and my mom..." he started, unable to stop the tears from falling. "And now, my mom is missing, I have no clue where she is, she won't answer her cell phone, and my dad wont tell me anything... and the nightly beatings are getting worse... I-i I didn't know who else to go to, I feel like you're the only one who would understand...

Mr. Blaiz wasted no time in rushing the young horse down to the principal's office, where Mr. Blaiz retold the story to Principal Dean.

Mr. Dean asked to see the marks left by Bruce while Mr. Blaiz called the police. In no time, there were police at the school, questioning the poor young stallion.

"I believe we have enough evidence here to put that man behind bars for a very long time, but in the meantime, is there anyone here at the school who can take him in? At least until we can find his mother, as he doesn't seem to have any more family left." a police officer asked as he filled out his paper work

"Ill take him in, he can stay with me as long as he needs to." It was Mr. Blaiz who spoke up, placing a hand on Marco's shoulder.

He went ahead and rode the bus with Mr. Blaiz, looking out the window as the bus passed his house. There were police cars in the driveway, and they were pushing Bruce into the back of one of them. He felt no regret or remorse, he truly hoped the man rotted in prison.

By the time the bus ride was over, Mr. Blaiz had received a phone call from Mr. Dean saying it was safe to enter the house. "Do you need anything from your house before we try to get you settled in at my place?" Mr. Blaiz asked as they got in his car.

"Some cloths maybe, and my laptop... Oh, and thanks. Thanks for listening, and, uhm thanks for letting me stay at your place, you really didn't have to." Marco was close to tears again, but they were tears of affection. Mr. Blaiz had done more than he really needed to, Marco would never be able to thank him enough.

"Don't mention it, I couldn't just let you sleep on the streets, and besides, I feel responsible for you, I'll make sure you're taken care of." At that moment, they pulled up in front of his house. Mr. Blaiz accompanied him into the house while he gathered a few items of clothing, toiletries and his laptop.

It wasn't long before they were pulling into Mr. Blaiz's house. Marco was suddenly curious of how his theater teacher lived outside school, it had never occurred to him.

There was another car in the driveway a pickup truck, which appeared to take the dragon by surprise, as his face lit up upon seeing it. "Hey! My mate's here! He must have something planned!"

Marco looked at the pickup truck, a bit shocked at how casually Mr. Blaiz talked about his homosexual mate. Not that it bothered him, one of his best friends was gay, and he honestly didn't care.

Mr. Blaiz's mate was a handsome looking husky named Diesel, who seemed to understand Marco's situation well enough, and was even willing to make adjustments to his plans to include him.

The next few weeks went by rather fast, he had gotten comfortable in the dragons house. He was still concerned about his mother, who the police still hadn't managed to locate. He had even gotten used to calling Draco's house his home. then it happened.

Mr. Blaiz had gotten the call from the police that Saturday morning as Marco walked into the kitchen, and Marco was able to see the look on the dragon's face drop to one of shock

The dragon didn't speak much over breakfast that morning, but sat the horse down on the couch to deliver the shocking news, which didn't surprise him much, but it still hurt.

"Marco, please sit down, I have something to tell you, and it won't be easy for you to hear... It's about your mom... The police found your moms body deep in a storm drain, they have the evidence that your dad beat her head in then hid her body there... I'm so sorry..."

He felt the air leave his lungs in a huff. He knew he should be sad, but deep down he knew it was coming, he was just too chicken shit to speak up sooner. Maybe if he had said what was going on back when he punched Max in the face, this could have been avoided.

He did burst into tears, crying into the dragons shoulder, unsure of what would happen next. "W-what happens next?" he managed to get out through his tears.

"Well," Mr. Blaiz started "Kits Protective Services are going to start looking for a foster home for you, in the mean time you'll stay here with me."

Marco began to sob harder now "N-no! I d-dont want to go anywhere else! Can't I just stay here with you??" he managed to ask. If he couldn't go back with his mom, then he wanted to stay right where he was in Draco's house.

The dragon nodded "Perhaps, I'll see what I can manage, Id like it if you could stay here too, at least then I'd know if you were safe."

Marco pulled the dragon into a tight hug. He had been relatively happy here with Mr. Blaiz, he even liked the dragon's mate Diesel, they both did their best to make him feel at home.

The next several weeks went by slowly, starting with his mom's funeral, for which Mr. Blaiz and Diesel accompanied him for moral support. Next, Mr. Blaiz had to fight with lawyers and attend a great many court dates for custody, a process in which he felt compelled to keep Marco updated on.

Marco turned to God in those hard times, He was born Catholic, and he attended church at that time, more than ever.

He was learning to cope with what had happened, so now he turned his faith over to the adoption process. He really had come to think of the dragon as more of a father than just a teacher or a kind heart, certainly more of a father than his real father had ever been.

Several weeks had gone by, and nothing seemed to change, nothing seemed to be going anywhere. Time seemed to stand still.

The two of them tried to pass the time by reading plays together in the evenings after Marco finished his homework.

After weeks of waiting, it was finally the day of the final court date, the one that Marco would be able to attend, the one where they found out if Mr. Blaiz got custody or if he would go into foster care.
