What's What: VoidWorkers

Story by Niniju on SoFurry

The VoidWorkers are a guild of secretive anthros that are bound by a code when using their abilities. They are almost entirely nocturnal anthros, but almost anyone can be one, in all technicality. The current leader of the guild in the time that our story starts is a raccoon that Regir had made a contract with to deliver a backpack of supplies to him at a sepcific time.   The actual way they work is they can open warp tunnels through time and space to see what the situation will be at that time. Living things can't survive these trips, but anything else is usually fair game. In order to obtain these abilities, you need a connection to the mana in the world as well as a dark fur color. The fur color is crucial in both aesthetic and functional purposes, because it absorbs the light. Once infused with the powers, one would be averse to being in the sunlight and would be exceptionally good at moving through the city using the shadows. For the lucky few who manage to get into the guild even with a light fur color will see their fur color darken over time. Members of this guild will also slowly become more nocturnal. It's considered a rare deal to earn the Sleepless Blessing. This "blessing" is when a VoidWorker is so in tune with the Void that he or she no longer needs sleep. Such VoidWorkers are then named VoidWakers and achieve ranks normally impossible to grasp.   Now how would one go about becoming a VoidWorker? It's invitation only, so luck is what's known among the gossipers as the requirements. In reality, thieves and other criminals usually have the best chance of joining. These characters usually need a desperate escape, and the VoidWorkers offer it, or they reach a level of stealth so close to "Shadow Surfing" that the VoidWorkers either eliminate them or recruit them. The latter is usually the choice they pick. Initiates are greeted by a curious scenario that requires good athletic skill and cognative thinking to escape from, and those that make it out advance to stage two. Stage two is when they're given Shadow Surfing abilities and told to either steal or kill a certain target (depending on criminal past) or, if the initiate is not a criminal by sheer luck, they merely have to get the attention of a large group of authorities and lose them by Shadow Surfing. This usually results in the initiate's first criminal act, and any stage three initiates usually have a heavy burden of crime on their shoulders. At stage three, an initiate is deemed an official member of the VoidWorker Guild and sent to complete contracts with the very basic Void Tunneling skills they are bestowed when deemed an official member. Completing one thousand credits worth of contracts usually allows them stage four access. Stage four is the second to last stage before they begin climbing the ranks towards VoidWalker, when they are bestowed the ability to travel from shadow to shadow through secret warps throughout the

city. Most never reach this rank, but enough do that leadership is anything but scarce. At stage four, members are given a monthly quota and are sent to do freelance contracts.   But wait, you ask, how do they know where to find the contracts? Well, listen and I'll tell you.   VoidWorkers have come up with a "ritual" for their service. It isn't gruesome like the ShadowBrothers guild, but it's not easy enough to achieve like the chant that the Undercity Thieves Guild uses. The ritual requires knowledge of how to speak an arcane language, so the clients are usually intelligent. A certain chant is to be learned within that language, filling in blanks in the chant with the information that the Guild needs to know where and when to find a client to both collect the coin and deliver the service. One is to give them at least twenty four hours' notice, but they'll accept reservations for at least a year in advance. One would then place a blank sheet of paper in front of him or her. If done correctly, writing should instantly cover the page with rates for various variables that one could concieve for the service along with a circle of glowing purple runes in a certain radius around the paper. Prices are nonnegotiable, so hagglers beware. After the client identifies what service he or she would like provided, the paper is put in the circle with payment and whatever other items needed, and a flash of light provides the necessary distraction for the client's contract to be bound. Within a certain amount of time, weather and circumstance permitting, the VoidWorker would meet with the client to confirm the choices made and negotiate the exact nature of the contract. Once all is well and the necessary details are discussed, the VoidWorker vanishes and the client is advised to never speak of the contract with any non-coconspirators. The VoidWorkers' punctuality, by the way, is beautifully exact. As for those that a wandering VoidWorker "feels" needs his or her help, they are confronted by the Worker and given a vision of things to come. This usually is enough to extort some money out of the target. Hey, I never said VoidWorkers made an entirely honest living.   To reach the fifth stage, a Worker must stay above the qouta for a year straight or achieve twice the quota for two months in a row. Completing stage five requires decent performance for a good two years or exceptional performance for less time than that. Similar requirements are for ranking up with minor changes throughout.   Associated characters:   Regir Chronol: From since he was actually born, Regir Chronol has been a client of the VoidWorkers. He has a close friend on the inside, and usually gets a high discount on services rendered.(Well, this is the end of the document as it is. Updates will appear here, and you should get a notification for it.)
