A short, quick story I got the idea for because of today. Happy Easter!

Warning: sad story.

The wind was warm that night as a winged creature flitted through the sky, visible only when it passed in front of stars or clouds. It was looking for a safe, secluded spot, though it wasn't sure why. Only that it must fly quickly and land soon. It soon flew over a mountain range and spotted a small cave.

Landing in it, the creature soon found out the cave was already occupied by a old cougar, and after a short fight was soon gorging itself on the would be predator. Not long after that it's lower body spasmed and it fell to the ground with a pained groan. It laid there, panting as the modest bulge of its stomach lessened and an egg pushed out from between its legs. It's first child. A nearly painless laying. But the night was not over, and before falling into an exhausted sleep a second set of spasms rocked the new parent...

The next morning Amaris woke up with a groan and looked around groggily. Where was he? Why was he covered in.. Oh, he'd killed a mountain cat. The blood made sense now. He went to stand and heard something roll away. Instinctively he fumbled to catch it, and stared in shock at the reddish-black egg in his hands. Tears welled up in his eyes as he realized what must of happened last night. He cradled the egg carefully before looking around again.

He let out a chocked sob at what he saw.

The rest of the morning was spent in sorrow as he skinned the cougar of its hide and made two makeshift blankets from that. He only took one blanket back home. One egg.

One egg, and a terrible memory he'd never forget.
