#1 of Jackals Star

Those distant dreams, always above the clouds, the young Jackal in his rather small bed, swathed in his comfy sheets. Those dreams of star captains and space fights always filling his eleven year old mind. There was nothing more he enjoyed, during his waking hours when not at school he would always be at home playing with his space shuttle toys. Making those cute little sound effects that most eleven year olds make, in his mind, it was a dramatic fight to the finish, or exploring a lost civilization.

Wouldn't you know it, it was getting close to wake up, about thirty minutes left of good sleep, then it was off with the busy schedule of the day, breakfast, school, all the mind numbing tasks that come along with it. The alarm for the young Jackal chirps a wake up call, an annoying obnoxious chirp that the young boy has long come to resent, signaling the start of reality. He yawns and stretches with a cute little groan and sits up in bed, it was only seven thirty in the morning, and still dark, of course with this planet, thats how it always was. A small planet with low gravity, everyone had to constantly work out so their bodies would not diminish. Which is partially why school started at nine in the morning, it was a deemed two hour work out to keep things functioning right. Perhaps generations down the road the settlers offspring will never need to worry about such a task just to keep things working properly. He rotates on his butt and plants his hind paws down on the cold synthesized hardwood floor. Everything is recycled on this colony and their ships. So any material can be made, they were the lower middle class, so they were not fortunate enough to have a synthesizer. The more upper class wealth had such luxury. He stands up and looks around the house, it was a bubble house, easy to construct and add more rooms to it. His room is small, the bubble house had only four rooms, one of them was smaller than his room. Shower and a bathroom cramped into a small tight space with a flickering light, it always seems to want to go out. The young Jackal moves from his bedroom to the shower, there is only one main hallway, a square dimly lit passage that leads to the dinning area, bathroom, and his parents bedroom. He makes a beeline to the bathroom and opens the door, he slams it shut and empties his bladder, flushing the toilet and leans over, stripping his night clothing off, he starts the shower, piles his clothing in a corner and jumps in, yelping, its cold. He scrubs his thin gray finely muscle toned body down with shampoo, he also cleans his hair out rather well. He rinses off and steps out of the shower, the water had not warmed up like he had wanted to. He towels himself off, he could hear both his parents beginning to stir, they'd need to make him breakfast, as he was not allowed to touch the stove yet.

Finally he wanders off to the dinning area after he dresses, his parents were up. He dressed in a simple pair of black shorts and a t-shirt with a mock up of a space ship flying around a planet. Shirt was black to accommodate the stars dotted all over the shirt. His rather large ears flick when he hears a dish set down on the table, he sits down in-front of it, waffles! He pours on the syrup, he mom baps him on the head between the ears. Her voice, soft, melodic speaks up, always gentle.

"Now now Akirus. Don't over to it with the sugar, you'll make yourself sick."

Akirus looks up to his mom.

"Awe Mom come on."

His father chimes in, a hint of warning upon his words.

"Don't you back sass your Mom."

Akirus pouts and clamps his muzzle shut.

His Mom takes the syrup bottle from her sons hand and puts it in the cooling unit, and replaces it with some synthed butter.

He spreads on the butter as best he can through the syrup, finding he needs to brush some of it away to expose more of the waffle. After about thirteen minutes of fiddling with his food, and then finally eating it he was on the treadmill, having to take off his school clothes for his sweat clothing. He finally realizes his entire schedule was messed up. His mind had been milling over that dream he had ever since he awoke, and it has been a constant distraction. He truly does with to be a space captain. He glances over to the clock on the treadmill. Eight thirty, it was about time to get to school, but first, a quick shower and re application of his clothing.

Eight fifty, he was going to be late for his first day of school. He knew his mom and dad would not give him a ride as they push him out the door with his backpack and a little red lunch box. Things were simple for the lower middle class, none of them had anything that an upper middle would even think of looking at. And coming to this school, finally arriving three minutes late into the first class of day, felt like a mistake, all eyes on him. Everyone dressed better off. He shrinks under their collective gaze as he takes a seat, the only seat left in the well decked out room. All the charts, all the tables, every piece of equipment one could ask for. He hurriedly takes his seat, having the tendency to dawdle and soak in all the details around him, he is constantly scolded for it. He sets down his lunch box and bag and leans back in the seat.

The class goes awe fully uneventful, everyone introducing their names, what part of the planet they are from. There was one other Lower Middle class in the room, a female bunny by the name of Ilysa Sansford. He likes the name, rolling it off his tongue a few dozen times before satisfied with himself.

Come lunch and they were in a rather large mess hall as the teachers called it. He goes up to the line and gets his food, it was pizza day, and the chef they had made pizza that was not synthesized. Fresh ingredients from the home world are delivered bi weekly to the planet. He looks around the mess hall, and sees the bunny sitting all by her self. He felt bad for her, all the upper class students kept to themselves in small little cliches. Even in 3014 such odd social behaviors existed between the vastly mixed class. He sits down by her and looks to her, she inches away from him for a moment, then realizes she isn't going to be called raggedy long ears again, due to her state of dress. She had a nice outfit on but it was ruined, ripped.

"Y-your not gonna insult me?" Her voice shaky, unsure.

Akirus suddenly looks surprised, both ears perked.

"No, why would I insult you?"

She stares at him, unsure if he was playing mind games or not with her.

"My clothing was ruined." He ears droop and she looks down at the table.

Akirus looks a little annoyed at this bit of news, no one should be picking on another just for their social class or dress. At least according to mom and dad.

He forgets his lunch, a little angry now. He was going to do something about this, so he could see the little bunny smile again.

"Who did this to you?" He asks, looking around the mess hall.

Ilysa stares at him, unable to speak, she points out a rather large Horse, he was wearing nice clothing, white slacks with a matching long sleeve shirt. Short bowl cut hair. Akirus stands right up and marches up to the boy.

"Hey you, apologize to the bunny over there right now!" he points voice full of anger, the Horse and his cronies look. They all bust out laughing.

"Why should I apologize to Raggedy Long Ears?"

The boys voice haughty, even at this age.

"Because of what you keep calling her."

The Boy waves Akirus off.

"Be gone now, you offend my senses." He heard that one from his mom and dad.

Akirus had it, but his mom and dad had always told him resorting to physical violence was never any good. This was why wars always started. But then, he remembers in the text books, the J'tal clan, ruled a vast territory over earth before the humans had slaughtered most of them. This was before the great talks of peace. He was actually a descendant of that clan. The J'tal were fierce, tough. Had his mom and dad lost track of their heritage? But still he also remembers they only resorted to violence when things were desperate. He pauses for a moment. Yes, for an eleven year old he is intelligent, its his nature to read and study everything he can get his hands on.

Akirus flashes a rather disarming smile and then stands up straight and proud.

But Akirus did not have a chance to enact his plan, one of his cronies, a tiger got up and punched him square in the stomach. He almost lost his lunch, oofing and falling to his knees. The horse laughs this annoying laugh, and it made his head ring. Those large ears were very sensitive to sound. He bends over the Boy Jackal and scoffs.

"You are sad."

Akirus saw red and stood up hard and straight, plowing his head into the bottom of the Horses jaw, one could hear a loud crack and the horse falls on his back. Akirus rubs his head and drags the Horse over to Ilysa.

"Apologize!" he demands.

The horse holding his jaw mumbles thickly.

"I-I'm sorry Ilysa."

Akirus drags him back over to his friends, who didn't dare touch him now. He walks back over to the table and sits down. A bit of blood trickles from his swept back neck length hair down his forehead. Ilysa stares at him, unsure what to think now.

"Th-Thank you, Akirus?"

Akirus nods, Ilysa notices the blood dripping down his forehead, she uses a napkin and wipes it up. His pizza was cold, he didn't have an appetite. She smiles and moves closer to him, happy.

"No one has ever done something like that for me. Mom has always been afraid for me because I have no friends. She thinks I cant tell, but she is always trying to make friends for me. I-i never thought they were necessary, but.. Akirus? Will you be my friend?"

Akirus nods as a Mess monitor comes in and kneels down to Akirus.

"The head of the school would like to see you."

Akirus was dragged off by the Monitor and lead to the heads room. He is made to take a seat, in-front of a big burly badger, black with a white stripe down the middle. He was reading over a digital paper, hmming to himself. The office was decked out Victorian period style, wood paneled walls gave the room a very important feel, but made it cozy at the same time. Tons of books and knickknacks on the

shelves.

Finally the badger says in a fatherly tone.

"Why did you pick a fight with the young gentleman?"

Akirus blinks.

"U-uhm, he was making someone feel bad, and picking on them, so I wanted him to apologize. But Sir I didn't pick a fight with him, I just asked." His young voice losing its nerve, quavering a little.

The Badger nods a few times and sets the thin gadget down.

"I see, well we don't tolerate disrespect or violence here in our place of learning. If you cant behave yourself we will have to expel you and send you to remedial learning. Where your type go to learn how to be civilized. Understood?"

Akirus could not believe it! He was being ignored, it had gone completely one sided.

"I was punched in the stomach by that Horses friend. I went to my knees and the Horse made me see red."

The Badger nods, considering this.

"I will take into account what you said, but you have very little room to move in this incident. He is of a much higher class. And anything can be twisted, his family owns this planet."

The insides of Akirus's ears went red. He had a feeling he was in trouble.

"You broke the child's jaw."

Akirus had nothing to say really. After about thirty minutes of discussion he was made to promise not to do it ever again. And he was sent back to get his stuff in the Cafeteria. The place was empty, and his new bunny friend was back at her class. He was guided to his next class. Where surprise! The only seat available was next to Ilysa. She smiles at him and passes a note she was going to give him later. It was her phone number, she had to ask her mom to give out her address. The rest of school went without any problems. He trudged his way home, wanting to see more of his new found friend. At home he gives the paper to his mom and dad. Instructions on the sheet said for them to call Ilysa's mother.

So Akirus's mother calls Ilysa's mom after she had a long stern talk with Akirus about todays events. After awhile both mothers deemed it safe for them to begin their friendship.

Akirus walked Akirus over to Ilysa's house, Akirus was all fidgety, she was a girl first of all. And secondly, he was vastly curious about them, most boys his age found them to be icky. Akirus's mom knocks on the door and it was greeted by a rather large obese bunny, Ilysa's mom.

"Oh what a cute little man, come on in come on in. Syra, your name was?" She motions Akirus's mom.

She nods and smiles.

"Your name?" Syra asks.

"Trudy, its nice to meet you. Would you like to stay for some tea?"

Syra shook her head side to side declining politely.

"I would, but I have so much house work to get done, another time?"

Trudy smiles broadly showing all her teeth.

"Of course! Just give me a call when you want."

Trudy giggles and Syra smiles turning around and walking back home, she looks over her shoulder at Akirus.

"Behave, be home by seven thirty, and please don't get dirty. I love you Son."

Akirus blushes.

"Mooommmm."

Syra flashes an adoring smile to her son and is off down past a stand of trees. This house was only two bubbles, one bubble shared with mom and daughter with a sectioned off bathroom, and the other bubble, a kitchen unit with a spartan couch piled off to one side. No Gram Tv in this house, but a lot of book shelves.

Ilysa runs up to Akirus and hugs him tightly.

"Oh thank you for what you did for me today, I didn't think anyone would stick up for me."

Akirus didn't know what to do, so he hugs her, and her scent tickles his sense of smell. It wasn't nasty like many boys back on earth had said it would be, it was... pleasing some how. They both part and she

looks at him then back to her mom.

"Can we go play?"

Trudy nods her head smiling.

"Of course of course. You two just don't get dirty, play in out little area over here, or outside."

They both opted for outside, and out the door they went in a bolt, chasing after each other, Ilysa giggling leading the chase, Akirus laughing as he tries to catch her. She was a difficult one to catch, all those swerves and dodges, he ended up falling on his stomach a few times taking the turns too tight. He didn't mind laughing as he did so, his clothing getting dirty and muddy, his mom was going to flay him alive. But it was all worth it, when he was playing with Ilysa, things seem to fall in place, and left an odd fuzzy feeling in the pit of his stomach, he stops a little confused and places his left paw over his belly, Ilysa stops and looks at him.

"Akirus, are you alright?" He walks closer to him, stopping before him. He had a puzzled look upon his face.

"Uhm, yeah I think so, my stomach feels funny!" He laughs and then tags her darting off rapidly to the

left before she could tag him back. Yes, girls were supposed to be icky, but there was something about them that had piqued his senses, and that odd fuzzy sensation in the pit of his stomach. He isn't old enough yet to understand exactly what that is.
