#9 of The Codex

A brief rest before entering foreign lands

It was early when Scy and Darvo walked towards the arc that was the welcome sign of the underground city. The city was empty, no music, no joy. Felicia leaned against a support beam, waving the two closer while stretching out. "Morning" she spoke softly while gazing towards the deeper depths of the long underground cave.

They were planning to infiltrate into Kingdom Varity, there they would awaken ancient deity for help. The ancient deity had been sent into an eternal slumber after the Beastiary Codex was sealed, but in desperate times, desperate measures had to be made. "If we cross the southern border plains and go through the crystalith caverns we can reach the underground roots of Varity" Felicia said while returning to look at the two warriors.

The silence of the underground city got to Scy, nodding slowly as shivers ran up his spine "Yeah, let's leave this place" he said while walking forwards. A brick road was placed, leading into the long and deep tunnel, soon the road split up and gave the option to go lower or upwards.

Felicia took the road that led downwards, soon the bricks fading into rougher material, Scy and Darvo following close while gazing around them. The walls were from solid gray and brown rocks, the ceiling was high, all kinds of crystals were hiding between the rough rocks.

The sound of running water was heard as Darvo saw a small river flowing, the water was bright and soon plunge into a tiny waterfall. "We need to scale the road, it's a rough climb downwards" Felicia said while turning herself around, placing her feet so that she could climb down the small cliff. The two followed and made their way to even lower depths, there were no chandeliers hanging high to light this place up.

The river was still heard while Scy felt the ground become softer, his green markings not bright enough to fill the whole tunnel with light, only a small ray was visible. They were soon engulfed in the dark caves, with only near sight of their surroundings Scy began to feel uneasy, keeping his paw close to his blades. "No need for fear, we are in a safe place" Felicia spoke before standing still.

Darvo saw how their surroundings started to light up slightly, crystals gaining color, shining and flickering dim. The ceiling too began to flicker softly while the glowing crystals began to resonate sound, it was as if someone played an harmonious harp. Scy fell on his back while taking the beautiful environment into him "We can rest here if you want" Felicia said while sitting down herself.

The two warriors gazed around to take their environment into their minds. It was a beautiful place, sheltered away in the darkness where no harm was found. It was as if no one had used these roads in years. "So, what do these caves lead to?" Darvo asked, his claw rubbing over a crystal near his foot. Felicia grabbed a small stone and started to carve in the sand "These caves lead to Varity. These crystals are offspring from the remnant magic that used to flow through the tree. They flicker when magic sources are nearby."

Scy looked towards the female, who was sitting down, her stress was taken away by the calming sound. His mind was still filled with the events of a few days ago, Celtian grounds were ruined by the blood maidens who murdered the whole city. He was filled with anger, but also with fear, the thoughts of the murderous acts they did without remorse was truly terrifying.

He also remembered how he nearly lost his sanity, his partner knew how to calm him down before giving himself in to his inner destruction. His markings were glowing with the same strength was the crystals around them, Darvo leaned against Scy with a grin. "So, what exactly happened to the deity of Varity?" He then asked to Felicia.

Felicia frowned and shook her head "The deity, Grandmurk, he used to watch over the magical distribution of the Beastiary Codex. Restoria settled it in the tree tops of Varity as that was a great source of magic. Grandmurk could feel all magic distribution and could stop ones usage. Once the Codex was sealed, Grandmurk lost his connection with magic and went into a form of rage" She stopped talking for a moment.

She got up and pointed towards a bright flickering light in the distance "There is the entrance to Varity" she said while beginning to walk forward. Scy looked at Darvo with a questioning look, standing up while grabbing Darvo's claw. He pulled the dragon naga up and they followed, the crystals began to shine brighter as they reached a dead end.

They saw how thick roots were crawling and throbbing around the walls, looking up to see a tunnel leading upwards, crystals shining bright while tree roots were covering the whole way up. Felicia held out her hand and tapped on a large stone in front of her. The stone began to shine in a bright green color.

The roots reacted to the stone as they began to pump harder, as if they were pumping blood upwards. A resonating sound filled the place, Darvo and Scy both feeling how a strong magic force began to fill their surroundings. They felt comfort, yet a sort of saddening after shock was brought into their minds while Felicia placed both hands on the glowing stone.

A strong gust started to blow, the stone shook heavily before it began raising up. A green magic beam was shot into the air, a loud sound of moving leaves was heard. Scy noticed how bright green and golden leaves were falling downwards, the tunnel that lead upwards began to shine bright at the end.

The roots started to tug free from the rocks, curling upwards in a spiral motion. Another long root formed a spiral form, smaller roots connecting both roots together as strong leaves grew between the roots. The green lit stone kept resonating sound as the three saw how stairs were formed, Felicia took lead and started to plant her feet on the leaves.

They walked upwards, the glowing crystals leading the way while spiraling higher and higher, soon the bottom was a dark pit where only the small green stone was seen. "So this leads to Varity?" Scy said, his paw held tightly onto the roots that created supportive beams against the rock walls. Felicia nodded while they reached the end, stepping onto the floor as they saw how roots covered the tunnel they just came from, creating a solid flooring.

They were inside the giant tree, it was the former arrival hall, where merchants sold their wares to tourists. It was empty, a soft gust from the openings and windows that were created was blowing around them. Felicia looked around, devastated as the beautiful kingdom was no more.

"Grandmurk is upstairs" she spoke and pointed towards the end of the hall where another spiral staircase was. They slowly started to move forward, leaving the lonely arrival hall behind. The sound of rustling leaves were heard as they moved their way up, gazing outside the windows to see the lonely tree branches. Abandoned houses and parks were visible as they soon entered the so called royal crown area.

The royal crown area was the area inside the tree top, covered in golden leaves and no visibility of the outer world. The tree branches formed a sort of crown roof, leaves were dancing while keeping the place somewhat dim lit. There were multiple layers of leaves that created this majestic top.

The floor was decorated with a large painting that covered the whole place. It showed images of a majestic creature that watched while flying around the tree, this must be the image of Grandmurk. Felicia sat down in the middle of the area, grasping her hands together.

She began praying as the two warriors stood behind her, lowering their heads in respect to Felicia. They weren't religious and the church in their home town wasn't a place they came often to. Felicia began to mumble some words while the wind started to get somewhat stronger.

"The prayers for Grandmurk must come from pure heart, he who only guides those capable of magic can listen to the inner thoughts. He will judge every thought, act accordingly" She spoke while her eyes were closed shut, focusing on old teachings.

"Let your golden wings open once more to reveal your eye of judgment. The same eyes who watched over our safety when magic was flowing richly in this old soil" She continued, leaves began to fall while branches started to shake against each other.

"Let your crystal claws tear open those who devour the righteous, the world is missing a judge. I beg for you to awaken and smite those who create vile stains on this world." Felicia kept speaking the strong words.

The floor drawing began to flicker faintly, Scy opened his eyes as he heard a loud noise coming from the top. His head raised, seeing how the crown somewhat opened up in the middle, a dark creature descended downwards.

His tail was attached to the tree top, the tail tip rooted and connected with the surrounding roots as he hung downwards, his wings hiding his face while sharp claws dug into the floor. It was a scaled beast, dark green scales and sharp claws with blue tips.

His wings were made of the same golden color as the leaves had, his body held up by the tail that was still attached to the top. Felicia slowly got up and made a bow "Grandmurk, my blessings go to you" she spoke, the wings glowing faintly in response.

"So I heard" it grumbled, his face still hidden behind the wings as his claws started to move his body forwards towards the two warriors. Darvo and Scy both stunned at the beast, not sure how to respond.

"Who are these, they weren't praying" Followed while he raised his claws, his body swinging back to the middle of the room, right in front of Felicia who shook her head. "They have lost faith, the world is in dire need of a new deity who can control the flow of magic" Felicia responded.

Grandmurk grumbled, the tree top shaking as he made his tail move himself around. "The Beastiary Codex has unsealed" he spoke while his paws scratched over the ground, his wings shivering but still covering his head.

"And now you need my aid, once more" He said, silence filled the room while Felicia sat down with her hands together. "I beg you, Grandmurk, we never intended for you to sleep that long" Felicia spoke, Darvo frowning slightly as he heard distress in her voice.

Grandmurk gave a loud roar as leaves began to fall down, his wings began glowing brighter before he slowly opened them to reveal his face. He had two closed eyes and right between them a third eye that was open, purple iris gazing to the begging female.

"I sense bloodshed" Grandmurk said while he began to raise himself slightly, his claws hanging in the air. Felicia slowly stood up again and nodded "The bloodmaidens have been attacking us, they killed all of our men" she said in reply, Grandmurk shook his head in return.

The dragon face showed no emotion, long curled horns on top. He shook his head before moving himself back. "I am not talking about the bloodmaidens, I am talking about you, Felicia. You and your warriors have fought" he said while his purple eye gazed to the two warriors behind her.

She nodded but quickly shook her head afterward, understanding what he was saying "No but it was self defense. Please I beg you, help us!" Felicia spoke with fear in her voice. Scy stepped closer, standing next to Felicia while making a gentle bow "We need a judge who can keep this world bound to rules" Scy said while staring to Grandmurk.

Grandmurk pushed both claws into the floor before releasing a loud hiss that lead into a growl, the tree responded and began to drop more leaves. "You dare to talk to me without prayer?" he said with anger in his voice. He moved himself closer to Scy, his eye gazing deeply while Scy stood rooted in the ground.

"I see" Grandmurk spoke before turning himself around. "I guess I have no choice" he continued as his tail snapped free from the roots, letting the beast fall on the ground. A loud tremble shook the room as his hind legs dug into the ground, lifting himself up on them before standing up.

It was now visible how tall and big this deity was, his two eyes opened before the third one closed. Deep yellow eyes gazed to the three while his wings spread wide. Felicia widened her eyes, the tree top started to shake violently.

"We need to run, NOW!" she said while turning herself to face the staircase. The crown started to open up, sunlight began to shine into the room while leaves began to wither. "What the..." Darvo said while looking up, seeing how the leaves began to turn brown, falling down like fall had settled down.

Grandmurk jumped forward towards the three, making the three dodge. He flung his claw forward, Scy fell a rough claw push against his back. His feet lost balance, making himself fall into the staircase.

Darvo groaned as he saw how his partner fell down the staircase. Felicia widened her eyes, quickly following while she unsheathed her rapier and threw it into the wall. Scy saw the rapier and stretched out his paw, clenching onto the rapier.

He hung against the spiraling staircase as the two quickly moved towards him, Grandmurk began to roar loud, causing the whole tree to tremble. "Scy! You okay?" Darvo said, slowly pulling his partner up on the stairs.

The roots began to weaken, slowly withering while Scy jumped up and pointed downwards. "We need to hurry!" he said as the other two began to follow, quickly reaching the ground room.

They looked up as they saw how the whole staircase had withered, crumbled into dead roots and leaves to create a massive upwards tunnel. Darvo sighed before he gasped in surprise.

Grandmurk began to fly downwards, quickly reaching the ground floor to oppose the threesome. Felicia grabbed her rapier and got into a defensive stance.

"Very well, let us prove our worth and determination"
