#6 of The Codex

An underground city that will lead to victory.

Two heavy blades clashed into each other, Darvo stood eye in eye with an almost identical clone, the pup had shifted himself with another Codex page. "How does it feel? To fight yourself?" The duplicate said, his grin visible while pushing his blade towards the dragon naga. He shook his head, feeling the heavy power pushing him backwards, the sound of wood that was dragged over the ground was heard behind him. "You are not me!" Darvo said before quick stepping aside, his opponent losing stability and falling forward before sweeping his leg around.

With quick reflexes Darvo knew to jump away, seeing an incoming stick which he deflected with his heavy sword. Short huffs escaped his maw, Scy getting back up on his feet right behind Darvo "They are switching positions, one attacker and one defender" Scy said while crossing both blades, jumping in front of his partner to block an incoming thrust of the strong wooden stick.

The hooded figure had a broad smile that lingered right under his hood. It were mere seconds of silence before the man quickly pulled his stick back, quickly spinning it around in his paw before the middle started to break. A long iron chain broke free from the middle. He held the two broken pieces in his hands before letting go of one part, making it swing towards Scy with brute force.

"What!" Scy said in surprise, his blades recoiling while a quick spin was made by the figure, landing another hit against Scy's elbow. He leaped in while grabbing hold of both sticks again, pushing one forward to hit Scy in the stomach. Scy unable to act fell on his knees with a cough, his tail sweeping forward, pushing away the figure while Darvo jumped back in.

They were starting to weaken. Darvo noticed how the duplicate walked behind him, trapping Darvo and Scy in the middle of the two. Darvo turned his head to Scy, seeing how his markers were just faintly glowing, they had reached breaking point. "Well would you look at that! The two who beat up my uncle are about to get brutally slaughtered by his little nephew" The duplicate said while raising the heavy blade.

Darvo slowly raised his claw up, emitting a light glowing aura, his head filled with protective enchantments ready to be cast. It was as if time stood still for mere seconds, the blade came rushing down , hitting the protective barrier that Darvo was chanting. He felt the sharp blade cracking open their last defenses, Scy got on his knees and held his blades up, ready to deflect if he broke through.

A loud ear deafening sound was heard that followed up with a heavy burst of energy that pushed the two warriors down on the ground. The duplicate fell backwards as the Codex had lost power, his form slowly returned to normal. Scy saw how the tall figure had changed focus, pushing Darvo aside to quickly roll closer. His blades lunged forwards, slashing into the legs of the figure, making him groan in pain before falling on his knees.

Darvo jumped up and readied his blade, holding it in both claws before slashing it downwards, cutting open the neck of the downed figure. He fell backwards, motionless before breathing out one last time, releasing his life into the air. The pup struggled and got up on his feet, his form was fragile compared to his last magic.

Gazing to the two warriors who had killed his friend, howling in anger "Bastards!" he said before running towards the two. Darvo had readied his blade, ready to cut open any incoming enemy. A sudden gust blew through the forest, the mist around the clearing up to leave the three in an uncovered forest. Scy narrowed his eyes, gazing around while Darvo and the pup both stood still in place, looking upwards.

"This has...Never happened before..." Darvo said, the pup nodding while his head fell on the north. He shook his head with a grin, paw extending out to aim to the horizon. Darvo walked closer, seeing how the Restorian kingdom started to raise up in the air, underneath a metal mountain that formed as safe platform. His eyes widened, Scy too, walked closer. He pushed his short blade against the pup, growling softly "Just so you know, we're not done with you just yet" he spoke, the pup standing still in place.

The earth under their feet felt like it started to breathe in and out, the pup began to laugh while his eyes fell on Scy "They've unsealed the Beastiary Codex, let the man slaughter begin" He said with a chuckle. His paw lunged into Scy's side, his other paw disarming the short sword. Scy groaned at the sharp paw that dug into his side, loosening grip on the short sword as he fell how the rope extended.

His eyes could catch a glimpse, the pup had pushed the short sword into his partner, grinning while he quickly fell on all fours before running away. "Nothing personal!" He spoke before he had disappeared between the thick tree stumps. Scy ran towards Darvo, pulling out the short sword, Darvo groaned in response while shaking his head "Don't worry, it's nothing" he said. It was true, the sword was pushed into his side, but not deep enough to hit any vital organs.

"Well, now what?" Darvo said, his eyes focused on the raised kingdom, standing tall in the horizon. Scy shook his head and sighed "Might as well push onwards" he spoke before they started walking towards the grand kingdom. The forest looked different without the lingering thick fog, rather empty and dead.

The two were uncomfortable walking through, feeling slight relief once they had left Ethrena forest for a safe route leading directly to the outer fort of Restoria. Darvo looked to his left to see the thick shrouding darkness covering the horizon, it was the darkness that protected kingdom Lorzaila.

Scy sat down and looked back to the forest they just passed "How about we take a small break?" he said while his finger pointed towards a small river nearby "let's refresh for a bit" he continued while Darvo nodded to the idea. The two had settled in front of the small rives, using this water to wash their faces. Scy couldn't help but gaze towards the raised kingdom so now and then.

Feeling somewhat uncomfortable the closer they got. "You think that brat went to Restoria?" Scy said, wondering what had happened to the pup who nearly killed them. Darvo shook his head, his claw pointing to the west "Nah, I think he went back to his hiding hole in mercenary grounds" he responded, filth covering the words he spoke.

Lorzaila had grown even filthier with the new king that ruled the grounds, it had saddened the hearts of Lorzaila citizen when they heard their queen died, the new king seemed to be a fine man. But once he started to rule, everything went down into the gutter. Scy shrugged and nudged Darvo's side "Let's not forget our focus" he said, boosting both morals before jumping back on his feet, his markings bright green again.

A loud tremble was felt, shaking the two back into reality. Their eyes fell on a turning watch tower, extending a cannon outwards. The cannon was big, sending fear into any who could see the contraption. A buzzing noise was heard that soon changed into electrical charge, the end started to shine bright. "Oh no-" Darvo said before a loud burst of electric beams were released, recoil shook the earth surrounding, the two fell on their knees.

Their eyes followed the beam that crashed down right into Ethrena forest, cracking wood was heard while splinters flew into the air. The beam started to race through the forest, creating a burning trail of fire that soon covered the whole forest. Within mere seconds the beam stopped, loud crisping of burning wood was heard while the two quickly got up again.

Disbelief had taken place in their positive minds, Darvo´s eyes wide while feeling Scy´s paw grasp tightly onto his shoulder. "We could have been in there..." Scy said, Darvo nodding in silence before gazing to the kingdom that now had more appearance like a slaughter machine. The cannon began rattling once more, a terrifying sound was heard before the end of the cannon began lighting up again. The two had their feet rooted in the ground, their paws hanging limp next to their bodies, their weapons on the ground.

Another strong electric beam was launched from the cannon, coming in contact with a city they loved. A strong yell of anger and fear escaped Scy's maw, seeing how the beam reached Hearthfort city. Bricks flew into the air as shallow echoes were heard in the far distance. Sounds of collapsing buildings were heard while the beam started to roam around the city, burning and destroying everything on its way.

Scy tugged on the ropes, pulling his swords into his paws before walking towards the grim kingdom in front of them. Darvo turned his face, seeing how his partner had stormed off into the distance, quickly following up to hold him. "Wait! Remember? We need to find that spy first" Darvo said as Scy shrugged him off "Then what? Return to Hearthfort?" he said in a rather panicking voice.

Darvo shook his head and slowly tried his best to calm his partner down, it was unusual for Scy to panic. "We'll have to talk with this so said spy, then we'll see from there, everything is going to be okay" He spoke softly before he pointed to the steel mountain in front of them "The mayor said that the spy would be found in a small cottage near the entrance, so that would be right before the mountain" Darvo continued before walking onwards.

Scy followed close, seeing how the watch tower slowly pulled the cannon back in, lowering the tower slightly back into normal position. His mind was filled with the thoughts of the helpless city, would they be able to do something? "Darvo, we need to head back to Hearthfort as soon as possible" Scy said while his paws were tightly gripped around his blades. The dragon naga nodded as they stopped in front of a small cottage.

The steel mountain was located right behind it and looked monstrous from up close. The kingdom was too high for anyone to enter, but that was not their priority right now. Darvo knocked on the wooden door, Scy standing right behind him with his weapons, ready for a possible ambush. The door opened, a young lady standing in front of the two, pointy ears twitched around while she made a quick gesture for the two to enter.

She gazed at the two warriors, her eyes fell on the clenched paws around the dual blades. "Sorry for your loss, I had no intentions of starting this war" she spoke before sitting down, a map and letter in front of her. Her eyes fell on the chairs across the table, furred paw pointing to them "please, sit" she continued with a sharp tongue.

She was feline, long pointy ears and narrow pupils were watching every movement the two made while they sat down. "Ethrena forest and Hearthfort city were just attacked" Darvo said, his arms crossed while leaning back into the chair. The female nodded while holding out her paw "I know, I'm sorry, Where are my manners. The name is Felicia" she spoke. Scy grabbed her paw and shook it lightly, Darvo followed after "Your mayor had sent you two for I have useful information about the Beastiary Codex"

"Well our mayor might be in dire help right now!" Scy said while slamming his fist on the table. Darvo coiled his tail around Scy's while his focus remained on the lady in front of them, letting his tail squeeze slowly. Scy felt the tail and sighed "Sorry, my apologies" he spoke, the lady shaking her head "The mayor knew this would happen, I am instructed to guide you to the nearest save haven" She shoved the closed letter towards the two, gesturing them to open it.

The dragon iguana grabbed the letter to see the stamp was from Hearthfort city, quickly opening to notice the mayor's handwriting. His eyes fell on a giant lap of text, starting at the top to read it out loud.

"Dear Scy, Darvo, I've seen you two walk into the gates of this quiet city. This was years ago, Darvo heavily wounded while Scy held him up, eyes filled with tears and fear. The two of you were offered a fine house by my recommendation, the townsfolk did not agree because you were beastkin. Slowly but surely you two gained their honor, completing small tasks like helping the merchants out at the market, repairing the broken weapons. I can name a long list of things you've done as great deeds for the city, not because we asked, but because you two are the kind hearted folk this world need"

Scy stopped for a moment, memories of these old days regained while he held back strong emotional feelings to press on. "The years passed and you two grew up as fine warriors, stronger then the time you arrived. You've made those who hated you at first your best friends and even made them open to new beastkin citizen. You must've felt the darkness lurk these last few months. I remember Darvo coming to me as the quest board at the tavern had run dry, leaving only Restorian requests behind." Darvo saw how the lady got up to pour in drinks for the three.

She handed Darvo a drink, setting Scy's drink on the table in front of him. Scy too busy reading the long letter "Truth be told, and I am terribly sorry that you must hear this from a deceased man, Restoria had us under control. Once king Grafner got word about the Beastiary Codex's hiding place he started to contact me. Threatening to launch a full war against our small city if we did not agree to a trade route. Times became darker and I had no choice to set up a chain of events. I knew about the incoming colossus, that's why I sent you on its way" Scy stopped once more, taking a sip from his drink.

Darvo saw how the lady in the meantime opened a small book, her finger tracing a pattern that was inscribed in a page. The lady saw Darvo and replied to his stare "I'm making sure no one can hear us, I'm sealing off magic by placing an anti-magic barrier" Darvo nodded and let his eyes fall on the note, in peace with the lady. Scy held the letter firmly before reading the last parts of it.

"You two destroyed Restorian property, knew how to protect an ancient magic and you are about to fall into a war that will destroy kingdoms. I am sorry for dragging you into this, but I know I can rely on you two, I've seen your powers. This woman is my daughter, she will bring you to a hideout where instructions are being told on what to do next. I know these people, they are worthy of your trust, please understand that I had no other choice. It's my duty to protect this world, and I feel ashamed that my citizen might have perished with me. I bid you farewell, brave warriors."

Scy lowered the letter, placing it back in the enveloped before staring at Felicia, his mind somewhat at peace but still overwhelmed by everything. A long silence fell before Felicia spoke up "Alright, listen, my father had close connections to the four surrounding kingdoms. The reason was that there was an old group that hid the Beastiary Codex inside his village, making him a possible target. They had no choice but to be on standby for events like this. I shall bring you to our hideout where we have to plan our next course" She said , her finger kept tracing around the same pattern to prevent others from listening along.

The two warriors stood up, gazing around them before nodding "And where is this hideout? how do we get there?" Darvo said as the woman walked towards the door. Her finger laid flat on the doorknob before flicking up, a symbol appeared on her door as she placed her other paw against the symbol. A clicking noise was heard as if the place started to lock itself down. Scy saw how the windows shoved into the wood, replaced by metal, the furniture locked in place while the walls stretched out slightly.

Darvo grinned and shook his head "Oh, I know where this will lead" he said with a chuckle, feeling how the floor started to rumble, slowly lowering as they saw how the house functioned as an elevator. The outside stood perfectly fine but was locked off for the outside world while inside was an elevator shaft.

Scy gazed at Darvo, seeing his grin while he nudged him softly "And where's that?" Scy asked while tilting his head. The lady sat on a chair, her feet on the table before opening a book. "Welcome, to Celtian war grounds" she said as metal walls slowly opened outwards, exposing them to a stretched out underground cave. Lit up by candles against the stone walls, chandeliers hanging high up in the air.

A long road led out into the bright cave as houses were built on steep slopes, a fountain in a grand plaza covered the horizon as loud laughter and music was heard. Darvo stepped outside, feeling a light breeze that ran through the cave system, a small group of people were waiting before an arch that functioned as a city gate. It marked peaceful terrain where weapons had to be sheathed at all times. Scy followed as the lady got up, waving to the small group.

"Officer Felicia! Are these the two from Hearthfort?" a younger boy spoke, gazing up to the hefty blade Darvo held in his claw. The lady nodded and smiled "Yeah, get the Celtian's ready for a speech, it is time to turn the tables around" Felicia spoke, sending the boy off gesturing the two warriors to follow towards the underground city. Scy was amazed, this underground city had a calm atmosphere, yet active and jubilant.

They reached a plaza, standing in front of a tall building that had a balcony looking out towards the plaza. Felicia opened the door towards the balcony, making the two walk in before entering herself. They saw how the plaza filled with a busy crowd that cheered for the three. Felicia held her paw high in the air before speaking up loudly.

"Citizen of Celtian! We have a name and duty to carry out. And today will begin our first mission! The kingdom of Restoria had launched their firs attacks as the Beastiary Codex has been unsealed once more. We shall stop them and make sure beastkin and mankind will live in peace again. These two are from Hearthfort, the first city that has fallen into death's hands, the king has slaughtered my father. It is time to avenge all deaths that has been done by the hand of the king!"

The crowd cheered once more, hands and paws raised up. Scy looked to Darvo, both filled with feelings of defeat and victory. They were about to launch a full frontal assault that would kill countless victims.
