#2 of The Codex

Ambushed in a church, The Codex has been found.

The road to Hearthfort city was made from solid bricks. Scy and Darvo decided to abandon the quest to inform the mayor about the giant colossus they had fought. The Restorian emblem still bothered Scy a lot during the road.

"Hey, you okay? You've been silent all this time" Darvo said, breaking the silence between the two. Scy nodded and grabbed the emblem from his pocket "It's just this emblem, I don't understand where it came from" Scy replied as he felt how Darvo's tail coiled around his own.

He smiled and raised his shoulders, his fangs showing "Dunno, don't worry too much about it and let the mayor handle it" he said while his tail squeezed and tugged playfully. Scy nodded and chuckled softly, approaching the city gates.

The gates of Hearthfort opened when the two warriors were close, two guards saluted, the two warriors nodding while entering the city. The streets were busy as usual, markets on the sidewalks trying to sell their wares, a bard playing his musical instrument at the corner of the street.

Hearthfort was a well-known city for barter and lots of adventurers gathered here to take on quests. There was always music by a bard or well-known performer and the people were friendly as ever.

In the middle of the plaza stood a fountain with four heroic statues on top. One was wielding a shield, the other one a broadsword while the other two were holding a bow and staff. These were the known four heroes who defended this city during the war of Celtia.

The Celtia war was fought hundreds of years ago when the beastiary codex law was still in use. There were two factions who fought against this law, creating a worldwide slaughter zone. It was once the king of Restoria was murdered when a counter force was set in to stop the war.

The two crossed the market road and fountain, walking up a fit of stairs to reach the mayor's house. It was a brick house with red roof, grass perks on both side, closed off by a small river around the house.

Darvo knocked on the door and took a step backwards to let Scy in front. Scy nodded and stood right in front of the door, awaiting response. Soon the house maid opened the door, a friendly lizard woman took a deep bow.

"Greetings warriors, how can I be of service?" she asked in a polite manner. The dragon iguana waved his paw as if the bow was unnecessary. "Can we have a word with the mayor, it's urgent" Scy spoke with vigilance in his voice, his partner slowly moving himself next to him.

"Dark clouds are shrouding the horizon" Darvo added, the maid looking rather surprised as she knew Darvo as a silent man. She nodded and stepped aside "Come on in" she spoke while inviting the two warriors inside.

It was a cozy house with multiple rooms, a fireplace was lit and a small girl was reading a book on the rug in front of it. She turned her head and smiled "Good day sir Scy, sir Darvo, had a good hunt?" the girl asked with curiosity in every word.

Scy nodded friendly and waved "Yep! slayed another beast" he said with a victorious look in his eyes, deciding not to warn the girl about the calamity. The maid knocked on a closed door "Sir? the two warriors, Scy and Darvo are here to discuss important matter" she asked before opening the door.

A human male was sitting behind a desk that was covered with papers and maps, he raised his hand to wave the warriors in. The maid took a bow before she left off. The two males walked in and stood behind the mayor, he was wearing formal clothes and his head focused on papers right in front of him.

"What can I do for you two?" he asked, his head not moving from the desk. Scy walked next to him, placing the emblem in front of the mayor, his eyes switching to the shining object. He swallowed softly, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"A colossus appeared in Ethrena forest, it was heading our way" Scy said as he sat down in another chair, Darvo moved himself next to his mate. "A colossus? And this emblem was attached to it?" the mayor asked, his hand was enveloped around the small golden piece to bring it closer to his eyes.

His eyes scanned through all small marks to look for faults, but none were found. Scy nodded while Darvo stepped forwards "We had to abandon our quest, mayor" He said, the mayor raising his empty hand. "I'm glad you brought this to me, I'll have to contact the ambassador of Restoria. Scy, a woman came to me, asking if you could visit her in church today"

The mayor's voice was more silent as usual as if betray had fallen down on him. Scy tilted his head while his eyes fell back to Darvo, who shrugged his shoulders up "A woman?" Scy asked. The mayor nodded once more as he moved his hand towards a shining blue crystal "Yeah, dressed in a white robe, she didn't seem from this area" he said before his finger rubbed over the tip of the crystal.

The crystal started to shine while his head turned around "Please be vigilant, come to me in a few hours" he said before waving the two off. Both warriors left the room, heading towards the main plaza again.

"A woman huh? I wonder why" Darvo spoke, his hands behind his head while nudging into Scy "Maybe a secret admirer" he continued with a loud laugh. Scy growled softly and pushed his mate "Hey shut up" he laughed as their eyes fell on the crystal road leading to the church.

It was a big building, one of the biggest buildings in the city. The road towards the entrance was decorated with statues and on both sides were beds of flowers, leading to a small pond around the actual building. Darvo stood still and sighed "Hey Scy! did you forget?" Scy turned around with questions.

"We had to return to the quest counter directly after completion or abandon or else we'd lose rank points" Darvo said before shaking his head "I'll see you in a bit!" he started running before Scy could answer, his paw hanging in the air while he slowly lowered it again.

Darvo had rushed off already while Scy placed his hands on the door knobs, taking a deep breath before pushing the doors inwards. Stepping into the silent church as light shone down through beautiful glass stained windows.

He closed the doors behind him before walking towards the altar up front. The couches were empty as silence had taken over. He gazed to the windows, every glass stain showing a different image of the Celtia war.

It showed the whole story of how these saviors saved the world. He reached the altar, his eyes fell on the back of a white robed female, the posture looked like that of a human. She sat on her knees in front of the statue of the Beastiary Codex.

"Thank you for coming so fast, sir Scy" She spoke while not moving herself. Scy got closer, standing behind her, seeing how she slowly got up on her feet. "I heard from the mayor that you needed me" Scy spoke polite but with a serious tone.

She turned around, a smile was visible under her hood, her hands holding tightly onto something. "I've seen a vision" she spoke with a mysterious tone, her palms opening slightly to show a red ornament. Scy tilted his head, a vision? "What kind of vision?" he asked, missing Darvo's presence.

"My people can feel the future, the earth under our feet is hurt, is it not that you and your partner tried healing it just recently?" The female asked, in a tone as if she knew about the colossus who ripped open the earth.

"Well yeah, this just happened recently." Scy said, his eyes unable to move away from the small red ornament. It looked like a glass heart, it was see through and looked very fragile, as if a gentle squeeze was enough to break it in pieces.

"Allow me to explain" The woman continued as she sat down on her knees again, bringing the ornament close to her own chest. Scy nodded while he too sat down.

Darvo opened the tavern door with a slam, heads turned around and started cheering while Darvo walked in with both paws raised in the air. "Look who's there! How did the quest go mate?" The bartender asked while shoving a drink over the counter to another guest.

"Yeah yeah! went great! We whooped ass!" Darvo said while moving closer to the counter. Once he reached the counter he slammed both paws onto the wood, making it shake before extending one claw towards the bartender's throat, pulling him in close. "Big problem, a giant colossus appeared during the quest, right in Ethrena forest"

The bartender chuckled before pulling himself free again, straightening his clothes before pouring a drink for Darvo, placing it in front of the dragon naga. "Calm down, so you two fought the colossus, yeah?" the male jackal asked as his ears perked in curiosity. Darvo nodded, narrowing his eyes while frowning.

"Yeah, but we had to abandon the quest due to another reason" Darvo spoke while his voice lowered, gazing around to see if anyone was listening. The bartender noticed this wasn't meant for every ear and leaned in more. "What happened?" he asked, his red eyes glistering while his finger pushed his glasses back in place.

"It dropped an emblem, Restorian logo engraved" was Darvo's reply. The bartender started laughing before patting the dragon naga's shoulder. "Ohh you got hit on your head yeah! That's ridiculous!" he laughed before pulling out a small notebook. "But okay, jokes aside you abandon the quest right?"

His finger scrolled through the pages, noticing how his friend became more agitated. He sighed and shook his head before putting his notebook back in his pocket "Alright alright, but listen up, you can't spread these words. Infiltrators might listen" the bartender gave a wink before he nodded towards the side of the backroom.

Darvo gazed into the pointed way, seeing how two hooded females were standing against a wall, their hands holding tight onto crystal balls. "They arrived here this morning, asking for your partner. I told them to ask the mayor as you guys were out" The bartender growled softly before he continued "Filthy humans, no offense to the mayor, but these beings caused the war you know?"

Darvo's thoughts left the place, remembering his lover was summoned by a white robed woman. His gaze turned back to the bartender with a rush "Got to go, thanks Jax" Darvo spoke before he started to leave the place in a hurry. The bartender tilted his head before he was called by another customer, continuing his work.

"So if I understand this correctly, the Beastiary Codex is about to awaken again, your people want to avoid this because it would cause another war. You saw two warriors in your vision who stopped the awakening" Scy asked, his finger scratching at his chin.

The woman nodded before she stood up again, her arms extending to show Scy the ornament. "That is correct, but it will be useless without our help. We are able to seal the codex again, this is the key" She said as her smile returned again. "Your partner is on his way, we should start the spell" the woman continued with determination in her voice.

Scy thought for a second before extending his own paw, placing it on top of the ornament. The woman lowered her head and started to chant foreign words, casting into the ornament.

Scy closed his eyes too, feeling how the ornament under his paw became warmer, a soft beating was felt inside the ornament as if it had its own heartbeat. "Keep your paw firmly against it. It's an egg of the earth and needs warmth." She spoke between the chanting of words.

Her smile changed into something more sinister as she heard how the church doors opened with a loud smack. Scy turned his head, and widened his eyes in surprise. "IT'S AN AMBUSH!" Darvo yelled towards him, awakening Scy's sense of battle. He felt how the ornament began to beat harder like a heart on adrenaline, just like his own heart.

The woman chuckled before letting go of the ornament, letting it fall towards the ground, her hands lifting up her hood to show pitch black eyes with no pupils. Her hair was pure white as if someone bleached it, her skin pale, blood veins prominently visible.

"What!" Scy growled out as he pulled his arm back, unsheathing his blades to point his long sword to the female ambusher. The female just laughed while raising her hand in the air, a dark pulsing light appearing in her palm.

The glass ornament fell on the ground in front of Scy, his head turning to look at his partner who started running his way. "Ohh what cute!" the female said with a mocking voice, her veins began to thicken slightly as pumping motions were visible.

Church couches started to get shoved around by a mystic force, trying to push the running dragon naga away, who in his turn jumped and evaded the incoming couches. Darvo quickly unsheathed one of Scy's guns, throwing it his way while his sword was dragged out "Catch! Kill her!" he yelled before he noticed the red glow the ornament on the ground gave.

Scy jumped up and caught the drakkensboadian gun, blue markings visible, pulling the trigger with a swift aim to their ambusher. A blast of ice dust flew towards her, leaving a trail of cold wind behind. Before the magic attack could hit the female she had created a black aura shield around her, breaking the ice in dust upon impact.

"You are too late, your heartbeat already has brought life to the seed of codex!" She said laughing while she began floating upwards into the air, her other hand aiming to the ornament which in turn started to fly towards her hand. The red ornament, so called seed of codex began pumping like a heart while the female threw it in the air.

"MEET YOUR FATE!" she screamed out as the glass stained walls started cracking open. A loud noise was heard as all windows shattered, making the two warriors duck on their knees. The glass started to form around the pumping seed, which took form of what looked like an heart.

Scy shot multiple times with his pistol towards the seed but glass around it deflected the magic, soon a powerful contraption appeared. Giant claws, a long tail with sharpened edges and crystal like wings formed. The glass beast started howling, filling the church with a grim feeling.

The two stood up again, ready for their next challenge whilst the female sat on top of the statue, her fingers busy keeping a spell up while protecting herself in the same time. "Damn, just as I was hoping for ONE peaceful day" Darvo said while resting a claw on Scy's shoulder, standing next to each other.

Scy laughed and shook his head, spinning both ropes around, letting his blades spin in front of him "Peaceful? We're hunters, think again" Scy replied with a laugh as the glass beast got closer, each step it made resulted in the sound of breaking glass.

The beast raised his long tail, lowering his back as if he was about to attack. Scy's eyes widen and saw how the tail tip was the head of a snake, surrounded by sharp cutting edges of glass. "I got this one!" Darvo spoke before running forward, Scy nodding before rolling to the side and throwing his blade into one of its legs.

The tail started to push forward, ready to stab Darvo, who in response quickly rolled to dodge. His paw holding onto the glass tail while sliding underneath the beast, scraping his sharp sword over the underside of it. He fell how smaller glass shards broke loose while he fully rolled underneath. Scy pulled on the rope, before swinging his other rope towards the same left, using his blades like a chisel.

Another howl was heard before the tail lunged towards Scy, who in surprise had to duck. Grinning as he saw how the snake head had lunged between both ropes, quickly pulling them back to wrap the head tightly into the two ropes, his swords back in his paws.

"I got you now, filthy beast!" Scy spoke with triumph, crossing his arms and slashing both blades downwards to cut off the head from the tail. To his surprise he felt a strong deflection, small glass shards flying into the air as only result, the tail quickly retracting and flying upwards.

Darvo had rolled to the backside of the beast, his free claw stretched out while his eyes lit up, shooting a blast of ice against the base of the tail. He recoiled from the hit and huffed out, seeing how his magic had no effect.

"Scy! He's resistant to magic!" Darvo yelled while noticing how the beast started to turn around. Scy got dragged along, his ropes still tied around the tail as he got pulled towards the giant fangs of the beast. "D-damn..." Scy spoke while his eyes met with Darvo's, which sparked off worry as he saw how his partner was stuck.

The beast had turned around, facing Darvo while his head started to lunge and bite towards Scy, who tried dodging incoming attacks. Darvo jumped up while readying his blade "Don't!" Scy huffed out, seeing how Darvo's strong slash got deflected once coming in touch with the glass. He recoiled back again, his grip loosening on his sword.

Scy saw how the beast did a frontal lunge with its head, his fangs readying to bite into its prey. Scy thrusting it's blade towards the large fangs, his smaller sword quickly cutting the ropes through.

He fell on the ground and quickly jumped back, his long sword still stuck in the maw of the glass beast. It's tail started to waver around in the air as if it was in pain, the snake head finding its way to the penetrated maw.

Darvo turned to face the woman who sat with her eyes closed, her hands moving like a puppet master. "Do you see that?" Darvo said, pointing to the bleeding arm "She's controlling this beast" Scy said with a nod.

They realized it was useless to go after the beast, they had to change their target. "Darvo, keep the beast busy once it's done staggering" Scy said before quickly running towards the large statue.

Soon after Scy started running the beast stopped staggering, it's wings resonating and vibrating against each other while shards of glass flew into the air. Scy felt how the glass got pulverized into dust by the wings, sending out glass dust. The dust was aimed to the running dragon iguana, who in response quickly grabbed his pistol, his finger keeping the trigger low as he felt energy surging into the pistol.

A loud shot was fired, creating a large pillar of ice in front, blocking the dust in its way. The female grunted in anger as the attack got blocked, eyes opening and staring downwards to the male who was about to jump towards her.

"Want it rough? Then show me what you got!" She said while clapping in her hands, the glass beast shattered in pieces which fell on the ground, leaving Darvo surprised behind. "What?" Darvo said while his paw reached for Scy's long sword.

The eyes of the female focused on Darvo, her hand raising into the air while her fingers clenched and formed a fist. The glass underneath Darvo's feet started to vibrate before long sharp glass spiked pillars started to form from the small pieces. Darvo laughed before his sword started to twist in his own claw, this time being able to cut these spiked pillars.

Scy quickly thrusting his short sword forward, feeling it come in contact with the female chest. Her eyes widened, a pitiful cough escaped her mouth as she lost to distraction. Darvo quickly ran towards them, pushing his blade to the female neck.

"Speak up, what were your plans" He said in a cold tone, Scy grabbing the long sword from Darvo's claw to keep them both pointed to the woman who clenched to her wound. "It's too late for you two anyway"

The church doors slammed open, two robed girls walked in front, stepping aside once they were in. "There they are" One of the women spoke while raising her arm. Darvo and Scy turned their heads to face the door opening, seeing how their trusted friend walked in.

"Those two?" The bartender spoke, his hand stretched out while his finger rested on a trigger. Darvo's face turned grim as he saw how the female close to them fell on her knees with a chuckled.

"You've awoken the codex..." she said while her hand quickly aimed to the side. Her leaking wound started to spew blood, her knees crawling towards the pile of broken glass. Scy growled, wanting to step forward.

"You better not move one inch, mate" the bartender spoke, his pistol aimed at the dragon iguana. "What the hell do you think you're doing, Jax!" Darvo said with anger, seeing how the other two females started to move towards the statue.

The wounded one had made her way to the glass pile, her fingers digging into the sharp glass shards, getting a hold on the still pumping seed. Her bleed started to fill the emptiness, making the seed beat harder with every passing second.

The statue started to glow, the women in front holding out her hands while pages started to form in their hands. "Sister! It worked!" one of the two said. "Good. Let the king know" replied the wounded woman before she huffed out, collapsing onto the pile of glass, no more breath to spill.

The women started chanting, feeling how the statue filled them with the forbidden energy that had been sealed for ages on this exact location. The walked closer to each other, their hands connecting as a book formed, the glowing statue losing its glow again before returning to normal.

Scy had his eyes fixated on Jax, the bartender who just betrayed them, Darvo shook his head while seeing the two women walk away with the Beastiary Codex. "You know how to deal with these two, right?" one of the two spoke while facing Jax.

He grinned before giving a slow nod "You bet on that"
