College Years Chapter 2

Blake

I left the front office, clenching a yellow piece of paper in my left paw. Trigonometry, Advanced Biology, and Astrophysics. Those were my classes for my freshman year.

As I made my way down the sidewalk towards what I had been told were the dormitories. I failed to notice the world of hurt that was about to hit me.

"HEY WATCH OUT!"

Startled, I turned in search of whoever had shouted, only to have my ears droop as I witnessed a furry on roller skates coming straight at me. With hardly any time to react, all I could do was brace for impact.

WHAM!!!

Next thing I knew, I was tumbling backwards, the furry tangled up with me. Pain lanced throughout my entire body, even more so where I had been hit.

When my vision cleared somewhat, I saw the furry standing above me, eyes full of concern. That's when I realized that it was a he, and that he was a fox.

"Hey, you alright hon?," I blinked. He had just called me hon. I didn't answer, instead I just stared up at him as if in a trance. I watched as his mouth opened as he started to say something, though my ears caught no words. Everything seemed to go into slow motion. That beautiful muzzle of his opening and closing as he spoke, those magnificent amber eyes, staring down into my own...it was amazing. Suddenly my hearing returned to me.

"Hey! Wolf, snap out of it!" He shook me in an almost desperate fashion. "Say something!"

Blinking again, that magical moment gone, you could say that my response was a bit confused. "H-Huh?"

The fox pulled me up to my feet. He stood about four inches taller than me, but only because his roller skates gave him a height advantage.

"You should've been paying attention, you could've been seriously hurt!"

Then I remembered, and anger suddenly flared up inside of me.

"Me pay attention?! What about you?! You shoulda been watching' where you were going!"

The fox laid back his ears and glared at me all of a sudden. The look was so venomous, that it instantly subdued my anger. Ears laid back in submission, I lowered my head and stared down at the ground, mumbling my apologies. When he didn't respond, I looked back up into his eyes to see the smile in them.

For his gaze seemed to draw me in, and soon I couldn't help but gaze fondly back into those amber eyes. I recognized this feeling. I may have only felt it once before, but the imprint it left was unmistakable. That same tingly feeling came over me, enveloped me, swallowed me whole. Yes, I recognized this feeling; and it scared me.

For a moment, we both stood there. I couldn't think of what to say while he eyed me curiously. Thankfully though, I didn't have to say anything.

"So..," he began, "From that paper in your paw I can assume that you're heading to the dorms?"

I nodded mutely.

He reached out for the paper and deftly took it from my grasp, as he said, "I could help you find your room, navigating Morton can be quite complicated when one doesn't know his way around the campus!"

It was then that I found my voice.

"Hey, you can't just assume that I'm a-"

"I've never seen you around before, you have a yellow paper instead of a blue one, and frankly, you look nervous as hell." The fox took a look at the paper and suddenly raised an eyebrow in surprise. "And apparently you're my new roommate." He looked to me with suspicion in those amber eyes of his.

But this went unnoticed by me. For the moment I heard the words, '"you're my new roommate"', my world seemed to shatter before my eyes. This was going to be a long year.

Allen, as it turned out his name was, lead the way to the dorms. He hardly said a word while we walked, only giving quick staccato replies to my rather meek questions. Once inside the dormitory building, he led me weaving through the bustle of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors that were crowding the hallways.

The dorm consisted of five floors, I only knew this from what I had seen from outside, that and the fact that the dorm room was on the top floor. At room number 402, he stopped and reached into his pocket. Taking out the room key, Allen unlocked the door and pushed it open, motioning me to go in first. "After you, Roomie"

I stopped in the doorway and took a look around around. The room was larger than I had expected. From what I could see from where I was standing, the dorm had a couch, a small kitchen, bathroom (I could tell because the door was standing wide open), and a small dining area. I could see that there were two closed doors, probably separate bedrooms.

"What's wrong, too big for you?"

The question brought an image to mind that caused me to lay my ears flat to my skull.

Clearing my throat, I gave a somewhat forced reply, "No no, it-it's fine. So, um, what room is your's?" An amused grin suddenly came onto his slender muzzle. What came out of his mouth next made my heart skip several beats.

"Honey, there's only one bedroom with a bunk bed in the corner, you get the bottom"

Allen

Morton University, my favorite place in the whole world. Here I could do what I wanted to do, eat what I wanted, and sleep when I wanted. Before my first day here, I hadn't been able to do such a thing for the past 21 years of my life. As I roller-bladed past a group of students, I couldn't help but notice how they all were eyeing me. I knew why; last year I had acquired quite the 'reputation' for myself. But after a relationship gone sour, I secluded myself from ever getting too close to anyone.

Heading back to my dorm room, I was about to pass by the main office when out of nowhere a white wolf wearing a pair of denim jeans and a red shirt stepped out in front of me. No time to stop, all I could do was shout:

"HEY WATCH OUT!"

He looked up, eyes growing wide in horror. The impact was from me colliding with him sent got us both tangled up and toppling to the ground. I myself hadn't been hurt too bad, but when I looked to the wolf I saw that his eyes were glazed over.

"Hey, you alright hon?," He didn't respond, save for a blink of his eyes. I shook him rather violently in a panic. "Hey wolf, snap out of it! Say something!" He blinked again, then finally said; "H-Huh?"

Grasping his paw, I helped him up to his feet.

"You shoulda been paying attention, you could've been seriously hurt!"

I saw anger suddenly flare up in his eyes. "Me pay attention?! What about you?! You shoulda been watching' where you were going!"

I felt my own anger and indignation flare up, though instead of saying something, I gave one of my signature glares. It worked; his eyes grew wide, and he quickly averted his eyes to the ground. But instead of maintaining the look, I smiled. Once he looked up, he saw my smile, and a look that was terrifyingly familiar came into his eyes. Oh-no, I thought to myself, please not again...
