This will be an ongoing series that I'll update when I can. I hope you like the story and if you wan't feel free to comment what you thought of it.

Nick was so excited, today was the day that he was going to get his starter Pokémon, but he was also nervous because he was running late, because during the night he his alarm clock off of his end table. Nick was running as fast as he could, never stopping, not even for red lights, causing several angry people to yell and honk at him.

Nick was 13 years old and was 5ft. 9'. He had dark, short brown hair, red eyes, a slim build, and a light southern accent. He was wearing a traditional trainer's outfit, with the exception of his black hunting knife which had a 5" blade.

After several minutes of running Nick finally reached Professor Oak's lab, and he saw the professor waiting for him.

"Sorry I'm so late Professor." Nick said as he caught his breath. The professor waited for Nick to catch his breath before he spoke.

"Well Nick, I don't mind that you're late. But I don't have any starter Pokémon left." Professor Oak stated rather bluntly, as though he didn't care if Nick got a Pokémon.

"Oh." Nick said sadly. "Do you have any other Pokémon?" Nick asked in a hopeful tone. He really wanted a Pokémon. Professor Oak thought for a moment.

"Well, I do have one, but I'm not sure if you'll want her." He said, which got Nick more intrigued.

"Why not?" Nick asked.

"Well," Professor Oak started, "because she has major trust issues. Her previous trainer beat her and abandoned her in a Pokécenter. We have only had her for a few days, and she won't eat, she won't sleep, and she won't let anyone come near her." When Oak was finished Nick thought for a moment.

He nodded slowly, "can I see her?" He asked, and Professor Oak smiled lightly and nodded.

"Of course" he said, and led Nick into a room that had a small humanoid Pokémon in it.

"What is she?" Nick asked quietly.

"She's a Ralts." Oak told the boy, who stepped closer to the Pokémon until he was 15 steps away, before sitting down quietly. The Ralts looked up and saw the new human. She read his emotions. He's sad. And hopeful. And... lonely? The Ralts felt As though something in her brain clicked. This was the only human whose emotions were similar hers. She searched his mind a little, and realized he always felt like that. The young Ralts ran over to Nick and hugged him tightly, burying her face in his shirt.

Nick stayed still for a moment, then started stroking her hair while trying to calm her down. "It's ok," He started saying, "I'm here. It's going to be ok." He said, and the Ralts looked up at him, staring him in the eyes. Nick smiled a little. The Ralts stopped crying, and Nick wiped the tears off of her cheeks. Professor Oak started walking over to them, but stopped when the Ralts started looking at him. "She seems to really like you Nick. So what do you think?" He asked, and the Ralts looked at Nick.

"Well little one, would you like to come with me?" He asked the young Pokémon, who nodded quickly, before hugging Nick. Nick looked up at the professor and nodded. "I'll take her. She seems like she'll be a great companion." Nick said with a smile.

"Ok, I just need you to sign some papers, and I'll get you a pokeball for her." Oak said before one of his assistants came in and placed some papers on the floor for Nick. Nick got up, the Ralts still hugging him, and started sign the papers..

After 5 minutes Nick was finally done. He put the papers to the side and looked down, smiling to himself. The Ralts was asleep in his lap. So much for the trust issues. Who would ever beat such a pretty Pokémon? _He wondered to himself, he froze for a moment. _Did I really just think that? Nick asked himself. Sure, he'd had... Experiences... With Pokémon, but he'd never considered one pretty. Cute maybe, but _never _pretty. and looked up when he heard the door opening and professor Oak was walking into the room, holding two poke balls in his hands. He looked up when he heard the door opening and professor Oak was walking into the room, holding two poke balls in his hands.

"Alright Nick, this is her poke ball and this is a spare." He said as he handed the two poke balls to Nick. "And this is your pokedex." He said as Nick took the three things.

"Thanks professor. We'll be leaving now." Nick said as he stood up, holding the Ralts in his arms like a sleeping baby.

"Ok Nick, just remember to come back and check on your mother some time.." Professor Oak said as Nick started walking towards the door.

"Ok professor." Nick said before leaving the lab and walking towards Route 1.

As Nick was walking towards Route 1 Ralts started to wake up. "Good morning." Nick said in as cheerful voice. "How did you sleep?" He asked when the Ralts finally woke up.

"_I slept well." _Ralts told Nick using telepathy.

Nick grinned. "So, you can use telepathy?" Nick asked, and Ralts nodded. "Do you have a name?" Ralts shook her head. Her parents used to call her something, but she was too young to remember, so she shook her head no "What about... Kyla?" The newly-named Ralts smiled and hugged Nick.

"_Thank you!" _She said in Nick's mind. Nick smiled and hugged back.

After a moment Nick pulled away from her. "Why do you trust me?" Nick asked.

"I... I don't know. I read your emotions and found that our emotions were the same. We were both sad and hopeful, and lonely. But I also read that you had only good intentions, and would only do good things with your Pokémon." She said with a smile.

Nick smiled back and brought her back into a quick hug. After the hug Nick and Kyla started towards the next town, with Kyla riding on Nick's shoulders.

After about an hour it started to get dark, so Nick and Kyla set up camp and Nick started to make dinner.

"Well Kyla, what would you like to eat?" Nick asked as he started gathering things for the fire.

"Whatever you make me." Kyla said quietly in Nick's mind.

Nick shook his head. "I won't make you eat anything that you don't want to." Nick told her as he started setting up a fire pit.

_"Oh... Ok, well... I don't know." _Kyla said. Her previous trainers had never given their pokemon a choice, opting for the cheapest pokechow they could get.

"Ok, well I'll make some stew. It'll be good to start withe something simple." Nick said as he knelt beside the wood. "You might want to step back." Nick warned her, before turning back to the camp fire.

Kyla was confused, but she took step back. Kyla tilted her head so that she could see around Nick to see what he was doing. Nick took a big in hail and blew onto the wood. But what Nick blew out shocked her. Nick blew a large flame directly from his mouth onto the wood, and Kyla gasped in shock at what she was seeing. After the fire was lit, Nick turned his head to look at the Ralts, a small grin on his face. Kyla was staring at him, frozen in shock.

"What's wrong Kyla?" Nick asked, trying (and failing to stifle a laugh.

Kyla stared at Nick in pure shock. Nick waved Kyla over to him, and she slowly walked over to him. Nick brought her into a light, tender embrace, and realized that she was shaking, so he started stroking her hair.

"It's ok. You don't have to worry. I'm not going to hurt you."

Nick said, trying to calm her down. Kyla looked up at her new friend. _"How did you do that?" _She asked in Nick's mind.

Nick smiled a little. "Well, my dad was a mew, so I can learn to use almost all Pokémon attacks. It comes in handy when in the wild." Nick told his companion, who smiled a little.

_"Ok Nick. Thank you for telling me." _Kyla said in a quiet voice.

"No problem. You woulda found out eventually." Nick said with a chuckle before turning back to the fire.

_"Nick, why did you pick me" _Kyla asked as Nick put a pot on the fire.

Nick thought for a moment. He wasn't quite sure why he chose her instead of waiting for another pokemon to come into the lab. "I chose you because I could see that I was the one person that you thought that you could trust. I wanted to prove to you that not all humans were bad, and that some of us could be trusted. I wanted to help you." Nick said, before turning his head to look at the Ralts, before putting on a small smile. "And I wanted a friend." Nick added while looking at Kyla. Kyla smiled back, and Nick turned back to finish making the stew.

After Nick had gotten Kyla and himself some stew, the two began to eat in silence. After a moment Nick decided he wanted to get to know Kyla better.

"So," Nick began, "could you tell me what happened to you?" Nick asked as they ate.

Kyla spoke to Nick using telepathy, and kept eating.

"My first trainer captured me a several years ago when I was young. He didn't train me, he only beat me. He even told me that the only reason he captured me was so that he could have someone to take out his anger on. " _Tears began to form in her eyes. _"His other Pokémon treated me nicely, and would often try to treat my wounds. He would never take me to a Pokémon center, so my wounds often became infected, but he didn't care. He would just beat me more. __He never beat any of his other pokemon, though I don't know why. I think it was because I was the only female, though I'm not sure."

_ _Kyla stopped eating as tears began streaming down her face. Nick got up and sat down beside the Ralts, causing her to look up at him. Nick put his right arm around her shoulders and pulled her close to him, while taking her bowl with his left hand and putting it on the ground with his, before embracing her with his left arm as well.

"Kyla, I'm so, so sorry that happened." Nick said while stroking her hair with his right hand, trying to calm her down.

_"I'm sorry Nick, I'm not usually this emotional." _Kyla said, still crying a bit.

Nick smiled a little. "It's ok Kyla. Being emotional isn't a bad thing. It's when you don't feel anything at all that you should worry." He said with a small smile. Nick looked up at the darkening sky. "We should head to bed." Nick said as he looked back at Kyla. "You don't mind that we have to sleep on the ground do you? I didn't have time to buy a sleeping bag or a tent." He said.

_"No I don't mind. And honestly, it's better that sleeping in a pokeball." _Kyla said with a small smile. She hated those damned pokeballs, they were always too cramped for her.

Nick smiled back before spurting a small jet of water on the fire, causing it to dim a bit. Kyla wide eyed at Nick when he turned around and waved her to come over to him. Kyla went over to him. Nick laid down, patting the ground next to where he was laying. Kyla was clearly nervous and she gulped, not entirely sure if she wanted to sleep next to the human, and Nick realized this.

"You're still not sure if you can trust me, are you?" He asked the Ralts.

_"I'm sorry, but no." _She said, afraid that the human would be mad, but he simply sat up and looked around.

"Alright then, where would you like to sleep?" He asked. Kyla looked around, trying to find a suitable spot to sleep. When she didn't see any, she looked at the ground.

_"Is the option to sleep with you still open?" _She asked in a quiet voice in Nick's mind.

Nick smiled and nodded his head while laying back down. Kyla walked over to him and laid down beside him, still completely unsure if he could be trusted. The two stared into each other's eyes before smiling. Kyla closed her eyes and felt Nick's arm drape across her shoulders, and she felt a little safer knowing that he cared for her.

The next morning Nick woke up before Kyla, so he got up, restarted the fire, and started to reheat the left over stew. He noticed that Kyla was waking up, so he went over to her so that she didn't think that he left her. Kyla slowly opened her eyes, and saw Nick sitting cross-legged in front of her.

"Good morning Kyla. How did you sleep?" He asked as she sat up.

Kyla smiled at hearing Nick's voice. She wasn't sure what it was about it, but it made her smile as soon as she heard it.

_"I slept better than I've slept in the past two years. Thank you." _The Ralts said while hugging Nick.

"You're welcome." Nick said, returning the hug. "I started reheating the stew for breakfast. When we're done eating we should head for the next town so that we can buy some supplies. We should be able to get there by lunch." Nick said as he went to check on the stew.

_"Nick, will there be a lot of people in the next town?" _Kyla asked nervously. Nick thought for a moment. "There'll probably be a fairly large amount of people. Why?" Nick asked as he put stew into two bowls.

_"Well, I'm not good in large crowds. I have trust issues." _She reminded him as he gave her a bowl.

Nick nodded. "Right. Sorry, I kinda forgot about that." He said.

_"It's ok Nick." _Kyla said as she started eating.

"Well, I could put you into your pokeball." Nick suggested.

_"NO! Please don't." _Kyla begged. Nick was a little startled by the yelling in his head. "Ok. Don't worry. If you don't want to, then I won't make you. Just stay close to me and I'll make sure that nothing happens to you." Nick said with a smile. Kyla sighed in relief.

"Thank you Nick." The Ralts said in Nick's mind. The two ate in silence. When they were done eating the two left for the next town.
