College Years Chapter One

Blake

I did my best to control my trembling as I nervously stepped up to the registration desk in the front lobby. The leopard sitting in the chair behind it ignored me entirely, and instead focused on polishing her nails.

Today would mark the beginning of the next 4 years of my life at Morton University, and somehow I could sense that it wasn't going to go well.

Fidgeting rather uncomfortably, I nervously cleared my throat.

The feline gave me an annoyed look. "What do you want??"

"Uh, I'm here for-"She waved me off.

"Yea-yea, registration. Look Freshie, I just put this polish on my nails so I ain't touchin' anything until they dry. Just go over and sit that furry tail of yours down in one of the chairs until I'm ready for you."

Obediently I turned and headed over to one of the soft-looking chairs I had seen on the way over to the desk. Though looks could be deceiving, and in this case; they were.

As I tried to find a comfortable sitting position, I happened to glance over at the far wall. It was then that something caught my eye.

Forsaking the chair, I walked over to get a better look at the wall. Lined up along it from one end to the other in several rows were portraits of past alumni. One of them in particular came to my attention.

A large white wolf, whose eyes were full of pride and boasting, stared down at me.

I recognized him instantly; it was my older brother Donovann. He was well known and respected throughout the university, a role model if you will. Though whenever I'd look to him, all I saw was a challenge in his eyes. Daring me to do better, to rocket past him, leave him in the dust, show him up even.

As I gazed into his eyes, that was all I saw. It was as if he knew that I'd be going into Morton, though I never implied such a thing. I knew that no matter what I did, I'd never be able to best him. Not then, not now, not ever. He knew this.

"Hey!"

Startled, I quickly spun around. The leopard at the registration desk was no longer at the desk. She was standing not too far from me, hands on her hips and glaring venomously at me. If looks could kill, I'd be nothing but a pile of ashes by now.

"Wh-what?"

"Get away from those! I don't want anything getting broken on my watch!" Quickly, I moved away from the portraits. The feline eyed me suspiciously for a moment before glancing over towards Donovann's portrait.

Her eyes widened slightly as she made the connection in her head.

"You're Donovann's brother aren't you?"

Nodding reluctantly, I said, "Yeah, I'm Donnie's brother. Do you know him?" "Yeah I know Don. He graduated before my junior year."

Ears perking up slightly, I anxiously asked, "Did he ever talk about me at all?" She shook her head.

"Nah, too full of himself to talk much about anything else than, well, himself. I do know one thing though."

"Really? What?" Her reply was curt.

"He's an asshole."

Her answer stunned me. I never heard someone call Donovann a name before, so that fact that it happened right in front of me caught me off guard and left me speechless.

Without another word, she turned and headed back to her desk while tossing out another order from over her shoulder.

"I'm ready for you now, so get that pelt of yours over here before I change my mind!"

Without question, I hurried after her...
