What once Was... Chapter 17

He then closes his eyes while smiling warmly and relaxes with his boyfriend snuggled up to him. The sensation causes R.C. to smile as he then tightens his arm around the fennec. Joey responds by moving up to R.C.'s head and kissing him once again. Joey then plops on top of the resting fox locking maws with each other. The two continue making out as R.C. runs his paws all over his fennec's back occasionally grabbing the tail and rump to help keep him up a little. Joey starts to grind into R.C. some making him blush a bit. The flustered fox ignores the fact he's in public and pulls the fennec down on top of him forcing the fennec to straddle his lap. Sensing a moment of dominance, he thrusts upwards a bit causing the fennec to lose some balance and grab R.C. tighter for support. R.C. leans back into the couch further giving the fennec more room to spread along the bigger fox.

As the two continue their intense session, a loud cough interrupts the two followed by a giggle. Joey looks behind his left and notices two familiar figures. The fennec jumps up causing R.C. to jump about a foot as he sees Joey 3 and Sharlee standing there watching.

"Oh shit!" R.C. exclaims covering his face with his paws and looking away.

Joey 3 laughs and pats the fox on his head. "Well didn't take long for you two to get serious."

R.C. slouches more feeling quite embarrassed. Joey curls up next to him also covering his face feeling like he got caught doing something wrong. Joey 3 just continues to laugh. "I guess I'm the match maker after all, hehehe!" The panther keeps laughing and takes a photo with his camera. "Now there's something I will cherish for a long time!"

The fennec gets up and asks to see the preview on Joey 3's camera. The panther shows him the pic and the fennec simply blushes more. "Oh I so want a copy of that." R.C. still sits there covering his face as he watched them view the photo that was just taken. Joey giggles and hugs the covered fox.

"OK, I think he's been tortured enough guys! Let him be, at least for me." Joey says.

The others take off leaving the two alone on the couch as R.C. recovers slowly. He uncovers his face and quickly adjusts himself to retain his composure and attitude. Joey then gets up, "Hey, I'm going to head down and see who's here." He then walks to the stairwell at the end of the room to head down as the music starts blaring. R.C. watches and smirks a little watching his boyfriend walk to the stairwell entrance. After he disappears, R.C. then turns to the other entrance and makes his way to the "chill room" to see who is performing. He enters the room filled with slower trance music, sees only a couple ravers just practicing dance moves to the slower beat as was common with anyone that ever danced in that room. Most others would normally sit on the floor making bracelets, with others, or under the influence of some narcotic. He nods to the DJ that's positioned somewhat in the closet and proceeds out to the 3rd stairwell to access the 3rdfloor which is unusually quiet. Up there, he explores the rooms which are unusually lit up from the house lighting. He walks around the other smaller rooms looking around at the walls and ceiling. He hums a tune to himself as he curiously looks around each of the smaller "get-a-way" rooms. He eventually makes his way back to the hall which leads to the 3rd party room. The room's walls are lined with rave themed graffiti as he walks along the long room. Normally at the 4-12 parties, this room would feature hard banging house usually packed with locals dancing hard to the heavy beats. The floor in the room is well maintained and recently cleaned gleaming with the reflections from the overhead maintenance lights. The pounding sounds from the main room below generate a dull thumping sound heard throughout the room. The fox keeps walking along, looking at all the art and out the windows as he passes by each wall segment. "Ron did a good job with this art, I never really looked at this much." He says to himself quietly.

At the end of the room, he heads to the small closet room which leads to the roof. Walking out, he maintains the maintenance pathway along the roof and reaches the edge. Looking down at Penn Ave, he watches the traffic pass by Pizza Parma and most of the fellow ravers walk towards the building for the event. He walks to the other side facing the old convention center. "I wonder if they'll ever renovate that place, it's quite dated. Would be nice to hold a rave there, hmm..." He mutters to himself again. He walks along the edge occasionally glancing over at Penn Ave and follows the edge facing 9th St. He reaches the other corner and looks down at Club Elite watching a limo unload a few guys from what looks like a bachelor party get out to enter the next door strip club. He shakes his head realizing that the people are going to pay for something the fox can get for free usually. He continues his walk back to the corner where 9th and Penn meet up and continues to watch as he starts running thoughts in his mind. He starts to think back to the last rave there when he met his boyfriend by accident. He starts to play back the meeting in his head hoping some blocked memories can become available to him as the drug ecstasy tends to block some memories for some time afterwards. As he plays back and recalls the moment, he starts to realize that he was very actively engaged in making out with Joey. He continues to remember more from the night as he was joined by others including Sharlee, Joey 3 and the likes of other friends. He shakes his head some while thinking it was not what really happened, but slowly realizes that it was true. He continues to recall what happened. At some points through the night, he was dancing on the main floor. However, he seems to keep recalling being stuck in the lower room in a corner with Joey and a couple others. He shakes his head looking down as he continues to watch the ravers enter the building. He continues to think hard trying to remember what has occurred that night as he stands on the corner of the roof leaning on the retaining wall.

Moments later as he's standing there looking down and deep in thought, a figure comes behind him and grabs his sides making him jump. "Holy shit!!! Don't do that, I almost jumped!" R.C. exclaims as he turns around facing a familiar panther. "Fuck! Joey 3?!? Why!!!"

Joey 3 giggles, "Sorry I was trying to find you! Your boyfriend was looking for ya!"

The word boyfriend echoes through the fox's head still sending a factor of shock. He's still becoming accustomed to that term being associated with him. He continues to play that term back in his head still evaluating the meaning to him.

"Hey? You alright or something?" Joey 3 snaps R.C.'s trance. "You seem so be so weird lately? Is something bothering you?" He looks at the fox who's slowly coming back.

"Yeah, I'm OK. I guess." R.C. replies slowly.

"You seem distracted; tell me what's on your mind. You're a real good friend to me now." The panther grabs the fox's arm. R.C. looks at Joey a little upset appearing to be crying. "Dude! What happened?"

R.C. turns his head to the side trying to hide his apparent sadness, "No, I'm fine...maybe."

Joey 3 then goes to pull him in for a hug and R.C. starts to cry. "Dude? What is wrong? You're never like this!" He holds R.C. tight as he continues to cry a bit in his shoulder. "Please tell me? I can't let you be like this, I'm your super best awesome friend man!"

R.C. backs off a little and wipes his eyes from his tears. He looks down for a moment, takes a few deep breaths and then looks up at Joey 3. He sighs once and shrugs. "It's...complicated and scary. I'm not sure if I want to talk about it."

"Ok, well I think I might know the problem!" Joey 3 suggests as he continues to look at the fox. "You're uncomfortable with your boyfriend in public, is that so?"

R.C. nods weakly.

"I thought so. I can tell it in your eyes. I've been through this before with this stuff. I also was straight and feared coming out as gay and stuff." The panther speaks his mind.

R.C. looks back up again, "Y...yeah. I just...I mean I...don't know..." He stutters continuously and starts to cry and shake some. Joey 3 and holds him close.

"You're fine man, it's a scary world, but one day things will be less stressful when it comes to loving who you want to love. You will face tough times and a lot of enemies, but you'll come out stronger. I know you will and I wish you and Joey the best. He's amazing and I know he likes you a lot!" Joey 3 says.

"I do like him and stuff," R.C. shrugs and looks to the side a lot feeling a wave of anxiety as being questioned. He looks around nervously at the sky. Joey 3 takes notice again.

"R.C., look over the edge here with me for a moment." He grabs the fox and leads him to the corner of the roof again. They both look over and down at the sidewalks are more ravers slowly walk to the building. "See everyone below? They don't care one bit if you're straight, gay, bi, whatever. They love you for who you are and from what I hear; you're quite well respected and liked around here. Dude, be happy you have someone who likes you and will be in a really good relationship for a long time. I know he will and you will, also. You had the shittiest luck with relationships before, so maybe this is you saying that you're actually gay or have more attraction to the guys perhaps? It's part of life."

R.C. looks back at Joey 3, "You really think so? I admit I was curious and when I kissed my friend a couple years back, I never realized I'd end up liking it. You know something, I did like it. Did I think I would ever date a guy like him? I feel like it's just right and stuff." He starts to pick up his appearance becoming more lively and happier. Joey 3 takes notice and smiles.

"That's how you need to proceed on dude! Just be happy, make him happy and it will work out! You are a good guy, R.C.!" the panther reassures the fox. "What do you say we head back in and get some dance and friends on?"

R.C. nods, "Yeah, why not? It's almost 10 and I really wanna see the headliner and maybe talk to him about joining our roster at 4-12! He's still independent and we could use a turntablist." R.C. throws out his usual business talk. The two head back in the door closing it behind them and locking it. They make their way to the stairwell heading back down to the lower room just below the side stage. Along the side, they see a few groups on the floor, some of which are under the influence of drugs, mostly ecstasy. R.C. looks up to the floor seeing a few others dancing to a moderate paced house set. He looks up and sees a wolf DJ who he doesn't recognize, then looks at the line up sheet indicating the time frame is set for open decks until 11. Being a DJ himself, he listens to see where the track is in the time frame to see if he's close to a transition. He realizes based on the timing he's about several measures out from a transition start. He leans along the pillar edge listening and watching taking mental notes. He continues to watch and listen as the transition begins; he starts to count and notices the next track has not kicked in. The music track ends leaving a drum beat, he starts to shake his head a little knowing it's going to be a jump track. He counts down as the next track rapidly begins concurrently with the existing. He then giggles and thinks to himself, "Just a bit late on that one, everyone does that."

Joey 3 notices R.C. standing there, usually means he's busy taking notes or doing some mental planning for his production team. Joey 3 smiles knowing the fox appears to be better and then heads back to find his friends. R.C. meanwhile nods to the music making mental note of the style and to meet them when they're done for a potential demo session. He spends more time listening to the set as others keep walking in filling the venue. After the next track breaks down, he starts to make his way to the stairs and is grabbed from behind by a small lynx. R.C. turns around and spots Eva. "Well hey you!" He hugs her tightly. "Didn't think you'd show up!"

Eva hugs back, "How ya doing sexy?"

"Heh, not so bad here. Fancy seeing you here." R.C. replies.

"Had the night off for once, figured I should come down. I heard you have a boyfriend now?" She lightly punches the fox's arm.

"How did you know?" R.C. glares back sarcastically.

The two start walking up the steps to the vendor room, "Well you see, my girlfriend found out from her friends and you've been glowing a bit."

"Oh heh yeah, well things change." R.C. starts to blush a bit.

"Awww, I still love you though!" Eva gives the embarrassed fox a tight hug. "You know I want you to be happy, like you always told me to be!"

"And that's why I love you so much, babes!" R.C. replies back holding the lynx tightly.

"So where is he?" Eva asks looking around.

R.C. shrugs looking around as well, "I don't know, he's probably up with friends. I'm just moping around like I always do."

Eva pokes the fox making him giggles, "Go find him! Spend time with him!!!"

"In a bit, I wanna walk around." R.C. delays the lynx's commands.

"I'll come with you," Eva grabs the fox's arm and starts heading up the stairs, "I'll come with you and help you out." She pulls him more side stepping others that are coming down as R.C. lags behind being dragged up. They reach the upper vendor room and see just a few mingling around, but no Joey. They continue down the hall to the "chill" room. Eva enters first and is immediately attacked by a fennec. R.C. becomes distracted slightly and remains a bit behind looking at his phone at a few texts.

"EVA!" Joey screams while tackle hugging the lynx. "You came!!! And Guess what?!?" He exclaims excitedly to her. "I have a boyfriend!!" Eva smiles and looks behind her then notices R.C. is missing, but returns to hug Joey back tightly. "Guess who he is!"

Eva smiles back to the fennec and points behind her hoping R.C. would show up, but he's still not within her sight. "I think I'll have to find him? He was behind me!"

Meanwhile R.C. is in the back stairwell calling his voice-mail on his phone. Usually his mother never calls unless something major has occurred. He listens to it best he can because of the ambient noise. Becoming concerned and frustrated, he heads rushes to the top floor where there's no noise as he has explored before and repeats the voicemail. The next few seconds has the fox's face go from concerned to sad. "Oh fuck..." he blurts out and suddenly slumps down on the floor against the wall. Moments later, Eva and Joey find the fox with his head buried in his arms.
