A look into Duran's past.

"You're dirt. Get up."

As she tried, Duran could feel the heat of her blood coursing through her veins. Everything was pulsating, her heartbeat echoed within her like an earthquake throbs through the ground. Her claws bore into the dirt, she herself covered in it, clothes battered and torn. A sharp lightningbolt of pain shot in her jaw, as the force of a hard boot kicked her upward with enough power to send her falling backward. She rolled onto her side, unable to retain the sound of pain that escaped through her mouth. Blood trickled over her lip, and she coughed, small specs of crimson spitting out onto the ground infront of her.

"I told you. GET UP!" A grainy, deep voice hollered behind her, followed by the boot coming down upon her face and crushing it into the ground. Her eye bulged open momentarily, the pressure building in her head, until the foot pulled back, allowing her to breathe again. Her eyes shut hard, more blood now dripping out subtly form one of her ears. Feebly she rolled forward, onto her stomach again, using her elbows to try and gain enough leverage to lift herself. Her ribs became inflamed with pain with each shallow breath. She could barely make out the ground she stared into with her bloodshot eyes. Everything sounded like a droning, low buzzing, possibly from the blood in her ears or from the pain throbbing in her head. Her senses felt as if they were failing. The only strong sensation was pain, enough to let her know she was still alive.

With a surge of energy, her fists bore into the dirt, and she pulled one of her legs up into a bent knee. Her body trembled, the simple act of movement was almost an unbearable task. A shadow bore down on her, menacing, condescending, wanting her to stay down, even though the mantra in the back of her skull screamed for her to rise.

Though regardless of the willpower it took to get to her feet, nearly completely upright, a simple, harsh kick at her side sent her flying back down again. She bounced against the earth, rolling onto her back, shut eyes facing the sky that seemed to swirl in watercolors of crimson and orange with the coming sunset. The shadow loomed over her once more, and her eyes, though beaten shut, fought against her swollen lids to open. That face she craved to escape watched her, smiling in such a sinister way at her. Though now she was too weak to feel fear.

"You should never have struggled."

The laugh that followed haunted her brain, echoing in the air, so full of malice that it shot through her bones. The shadow closed in on her. Each of her breaths filled her with pain, the struggle for life agonizing. A heavy hand guided itself over her torso, her shirt having been ripped apart prior. If she weren't already so numb, she would have shivered, tried to escape. But this was the result every time. Every time she revolted, she was struck down. Each and every time, she resisted, until her last breath threatened to leave her behind.

A strong hand gripped her swollen face, lifting her head from the ground and forcing her gaze on the face she grew to hate. A hatred that would never cease to dwell inside of her core, burning perpetually.

"One day, you'll learn to respect your father."

Silence loomed over the world above her. The hand kept her face still, another forcing itself over the worn belt around her pants. It was unfastened.

"If only your mother weren't gone...if only YOU hadn't taken her away from me.." The voice almost held sadness in its indiscernible mess of emotions. A growl erupted, before small bursts of sobs came from the towering wolf's throat. His heavy tears fell down onto Duran's face, and rolled down her cheek, melding with her own.

"I miss her, so much...you look so much like your mother, Duran..."

The hand at her pants broke the button with ease. Duran was too numb to feel the tears coming from her eyes, or falling from her father's drunken and heartbroken face.

"I love you, Dayna...I love you..."
