#5 of [2006] Shoot!

After I stopped writing Digimon stories (see my scraps tab!) I began writing furry stories. My first was called Shoot! and it is unfinished. The idea was a slice-of-life story based on college life. It is definitely better than my Digimon stories; it's more fleshed out, and the future of the story is definitely in mind. For example, not every chapter has a sex scene. It's a decent evolution of my writing ability from my Digimon stories.

It also features Ky, my very first fursona. My current fursona's name, Twelve Lukos Kyler, contains tributes to both Lukos and Ky, my past fursonas.

This story was originally published on FurAffinity at my first FA account, SonicHowler.

This submission is still pretty old. Just to give you an idea, the submission number of the first chapter of Shoot! on my current FA account (the number that comes at the end of "furaffinity.net/view/NUMBER") is 15074585. The number for the original first chapter on my old account is 222652. In short, this is old work, so please don't let it discourage you from checking out my more recent stuff.

Ky and his two newest friends, a cinnamon-furred ferret named Jakey and a bluish-grey Siberian Husky called Mitch, walked out of their Literature class, ten minutes early and in high spirits.

"Jake T's gotta be the coolest teacher I've ever met!" said Jakey happily. "Who would've thought making a song out of a textbook chapter could be so much fun?"

"Yeah, it sounded kind of stupid at first, didn't it?" Ky chuckled.

"Yeah, it did," grinned Mitch. "Who thought that one up anyway?"

"I think it was that cheetah, Richie Bolt," said Jakey. "Props to him!"

"Yeah, and props to that teacher policy Jake T told us about. What did he call it again? An ITP?"

"Something like that," said Ky. "So, what's next on your schedules?"

"Hmm," said Mitch, pulling his folded-up schedule from his pocket and looking it over. "Um... oh, here it is. Pre-Calculus. Heh, I hope there's an ITP there too."

"Oh, sweet! I'm there too!" said Ky, looking at his schedule. Jakey sighed. "Aw, fur, I'm not with you guys there. I have science, and then math tomorrow."

"Aw," said Mitch. "Well, that's okay, Jakey. This next period is the last one of the day. We have the entire afternoon all to ourselves. We'll all meet up later and explore Coastline."

"Great!" said the ferret. "Can't wait! We'll meet up at lunch, how's that?"

"Sounds good!" said Ky. "See ya then!"

Jakey headed off to his next class while Ky and Mitch strolled around, passing the next fifteen minutes sightseeing. They were on the very top floor of the classroom building, and the floor-to-ceiling windows around the building made for an excellent view of the entire campus and the ocean behind it.

"Dude, this place is so cool," said Mitch, stopping to look out over the campus.

Ky smiled. "Yeah, isn't it? The beach is just right there!"

"Ha, college? I feel like I'm on vacation! Only, you know, with classes."

"Mmhmm, no nagging parents, or little brother following me around...."

"No job hunting, no crazy neighbors...."

"No getting grounded, nobody constantly telling you what to do...."

"Ah, life is good."

They both chuckled a bit. "Yeah," continued Mitch, "the only things left to worry about are weird roommates and classes. Classes seem great so far, and I don't have a roommate. Hey, do you? If not, maybe we can ask Tim to make_us_ roommates."

"Sounds like fun," said Ky, "but I already have a roommate. He's not really_weird_, but I don't think he likes me one bit."

"Ouch, how come?"

"I dunno. We're kind of competing for a spot on the basketball team, but that didn't really seem to bother him."

"Well what's his name?"

"Oh, his name's Leo."

"What, that white-furred tiger that was staring out the window the whole time like he wanted nothing to do with anything?"

"Yeah..." said Ky. "According to the rest of the team so far, who apparently know him from before, he used to be quite fun, but--"

At that moment, there was a dangerous growl. The two canines stopped and turned around. To their horror, Leo was standing right there. He had one paw in his pocket, his backpack slung over the opposite shoulder, and an angry look on his face. The circumstances weren't that great, but Ky had to admit it: he looked awesome.

"Gossip's not a good game to play," he said.

"Erm... sorry, Leo!" said Mitch sheepishly. "Didn't see ya there... er... we weren't gossiping, I was just trying to find out about you is all!"

Leo didn't answer. He just walked forward. He passed right between them, but as he did so, his head turned toward Ky. Those blue eyes were like ice drilling right through his very soul. Leo didn't stop. He kept walking, not looking back at the two. Ky shuddered. Once the tiger was out of earshot, Mitch resumed the conversation.

"Whoa," he said with a shudder of his own. "I guess that's all I need to know."

Ky sighed softly, ears folded. "Something tells me tonight's going to be very long."

"Sorry, I didn't mean to cause--"

"No, don't even think that, it's not your fault!" Ky said with an optimistic smile. "C'mon, the first bell's about to ring. Let's get to class early. Maybe the teacher will be awesome like Jake T."

"You got it!"

Together, the two made their way to their third class. Both were relieved to see that Leo hadn't gone into this classroom. Things would have been far too awkward otherwise. There was a snow leopard sitting on the desk, watching as his new students walked in. He was devastatingly handsome. His somewhat tousled, short hair was snow white, despite his obvious youth. He couldn't have been any older than Jake T. Like Leo, he had deep, ice-blue eyes. Unlike Leo, his blue eyes were soft, warm and friendly. His body was slim, and probably nice and toned as well. He wore a black suit jacket and black slacks, a white formal shirt, and a blue tie with red and yellow specks all over it. The top three buttons were undone, showing the soft, fluffy fur on his chest. The tie was loosened, the knot at his chest rather than under his throat, and the jacket was completely unbuttoned. He wore no shoes, something quite common among furs who couldn't be bothered to look for shoes that matched their footpaws. The tip of his fluffy tail thumped gently and silently against the desk as he waited for the bell to ring.

Ky couldn't help but stare at him. "What is with all the hot teachers in this place?" he said quietly to himself. He forgot that Mitch was right next to him.

At that moment, the snow leopard looked over at them. "Ky, Mitch, you're early!" he said in a smooth voice. "Heh, looking for some extra credit?" Ky blinked, wondering how this teacher knew their names already.

Mitch smiled. "Nah, we just thought we'd come early and check things out."

"Oh? Well, that's cool. You can check out whatever you want then! Oh, and pick your seats while you're at it."

"Thanks!" said Mitch. Ky wanted to say something, but he honestly couldn't think of what. He just hoped he wouldn't have another wet dream in class. Oh, who was he kidding? He wouldn't be sleeping a wink in this class!

"Is your friend okay, Mitch?" asked the snow leopard, waving a paw in front of Ky's face. The wolf blinked, snapping back to reality.

"Oh, yeah!" he said, his mind racing. "Just that, um... something happened with my roommate, and I was just thinking about it. No big deal, really."

He smiled. "Alright." He stood up, walked around the desk to the board, picked up a marker, and wrote the word "Dakota." He even had a cute name!

Ky and Mitch took seats near the front and next to a window. They were still on the top floor, and the view outside the classroom was marvelous. As the first bell rang, they watched as various students strolled into the classroom. Luke and Otto from the basketball team took seats just behind Ky and Mitch. Ky recognized the wolf and tiger from his History class, and Richie Bolt from his Literature class.

A few minutes later, the tardy bell rang, and most of the desks were occupied with students chatting about their college experience so far. Dakota sat back down on the desk for a few minutes, just watching and listening. After awhile, students started to notice him, shushing each other. A little less than a minute, and there was complete silence. Dakota gave a confident little smile. "Hello there," he said quietly and slowly, almost dangerously, in that smooth, cool voice. "I'm Dakota Simon, and this... is my Pre-Calculus class."

There was dead silence. Nobody knew what to expect. Was this teacher going to be tough on them? He certainly sounded tough! All of a sudden, however, he stood up and gave a little smirk, looking down at the floor.

"I know what you're thinking. 'Uh-oh, so much for an easy math class. This guy's gonna kill us with work.' You tell me. Do I really look like I'll give you that much work?"

At a lightning-fast speed, he reached both paws into the inside pockets of his jacket, whipping out two cans of something and aiming them at the class. Ropy, colorful strands of silly string shot out over and onto the shocked students. They yelped and squirmed, clamoring and laughing as they were hit with their professor's gag. Dakota laughed, making sure he got everyone, making a complete mess of the classroom, emptying both cans in the process. Laughter and commotion took over the classroom for a few minutes.

"Okay, okay!" said Dakota. "That was great. You guys looked like you were about to run out of here screaming for a second!" This brought out a few more chuckles from the students. "Really though," he continued, "I'm not really a tough guy. Actually, I'm pretty laid back. In fact, I'm sure you've all found that most of the teachers here, thanks to Fur Coast University's ITP thing, can be a lot of fun." The students cheered their approval. Dakota sat back down on the desk. "There's something you should know about FCU though.

"I'm sure most of you are pretty psyched about this school year, and you think that here at FCU, things are going to be a breeze, and you'll be able to get away with anything. I'll be honest with you: FCU is most definitely a place to have fun, and it's really easy to kind of lose yourself here and think you're on a vacation rather than a college campus. That's not necessarily a bad thing. FCU wants its students to chill out and have a good time. Don't forget though, there's a time and a place for everything. FCU's still a college. You'll have plenty of freedom here, but just because I and the rest of the teachers want you to relax and have fun while you learn doesn't mean you can just do whatever whenever, turn things in if and when you want, or slack off. When you graduate, hopefully from FCU, you'll find that there are plenty of opportunities in life to have fun, but you'll still have things to do, and deadlines to meet, and responsibility will come into play. College isn't always easy, no matter where you are. You'll still have to do some work. However, I and your other professors are going to do our best to make sure you have a good time doing it. We know that something interesting is much easier to learn than something boring. That's why I'm gonna make this class as fun and interesting as I can. You'll still have homework. You can't really learn math without practice. I'm sure, though, that you'll find it so easy, it'll just seem like you're doing a Sudoku puzzle or something."

The class gave some murmurs of general agreement. Dakota smiled. "Hey, how many of you had Ethan's class today?" The students looked confused. "Oh, sorry," Dakota said, correcting himself. "I mean, Mr. Russels!" Some of the students raised their paws. "Heh, was he tough on you today?"

"Yeah, he was_boring_!" said one student, a mouse. Dakota laughed.

"He hates when I do this, so don't tell anyone, but that's just his cover for the first day. Tomorrow will be better, I promise." The students cheered.

Dakota stood up. "Okay then, down to business!"

"Business" consisted of almost the same thing Jake T did at the beginning of class. The students worked together to create ways to make their math class fun. After that, Dakota dismissed the class, wanting them to enjoy as much of their first day as possible.

Ky had barely heard a thing all class period. He had been too busy watching Dakota. It was Mitch that shook him out of his trance. "Heh, you alright there, Ky?" Ky blinked. "Oh, yeah! He let us out early. What do you want to do?"

"Well, first, we promised we'd meet Jakey at lunch. That's quite awhile from now though. Wanna come to my dorm room? I've got video games."

"Oh, sure! Which hall are you in?"

"Everest. You?"

"Same one, great!"

The two left the classroom building, chatting happily. They crossed Coastline Drive and entered their dormitory. Dean Tim was sitting in the lobby, watching a movie with some other students. Ky and Mitch went upstairs to Mitch's dorm room, which was only a few rooms away from Ky's. The room was still fairly cluttered with boxes. With no roommate, Mitch could unpack at his own leisure. However, he did have a nice flat-screen television already mounted on the wall, though it wasn't nearly as nice or as large as Leo's. An array of video game consoles was spread out on the floor. They passed time happily playing from PlayStation to GameCube. It wasn't until after a particularly funny round of Super Smash Brothers Melee that things suddenly got very interesting.

Still laughing, Mitch flopped onto the bed. "Haha! I can't believe you knocked_yourself_out with that home run bat!"

Ky was laughing too. "Heh, hey, my paw slipped!"

Mitch grinned, shoving him playfully. "Suuuure," he said.

Ky grinned. "Hey, don't shove me!" he shoved the husky back just as playfully.

Mitch stood up. "Oh, yeah? Well, what if I don't stop?" He smirked, shoving the wolf back onto the bed again, pretending to act tough.

"Well," Ky said, recovering and getting back to his footpaws, "I just might have to do_this_!" He jumped up, pouncing on his new friend, wrestling him down onto the bed. Mitch gave a surprised yip, and the two started to wrestle. A headlock here, a bear hug there, a half-nelson, and even a weak attempt at a sleeper-hold left the two lying on the floor, panting. Mitch propped himself up against the side of the bed.

"Heh, you're good, Ky!" he said between breaths. Ky smiled, closing his eyes as he caught his breath.

"Thanks! You too. Nice sleeper-hold!" The wolf changed positions, trying to get a little more comfortable--unthinkingly resting his head in Mitch's lap. At first, Mitch didn't respond. He waited until he and Ky were breathing normally again.

"So, Ky," he said.

"Hm?"

"You like guys, don'tcha?"

At this, Ky's eyes flew wide open. He sat up, staring at Mitch. "What?"

Mitch repeated himself. "You like guys, don'tcha?" The way he said it, it wasn't even a question.

Ky felt himself blush a little. "W-what are you talking about? What makes you think that?"

Mitch smiled, looking up at the ceiling. He held up a paw, counting on his fingers as he spoke. "Well, let's see. At the beginning of math class, you called Dakota hot. Not only that, but you were almost drooling mindlessly over him all period long. Also, you just had your head in my lap for two minutes. You didn't deny it when I asked you if you liked guys; you just responded with another question. Oh, and... when we were wrestling, you grabbed my butt."

Ky blinked. "I did_not_ grab your butt!"

Mitch laughed. "Okay, I added that on. So, do ya?"

Ky's mind was racing for a cover-up. Maybe if the evidence wasn't so plentiful, he would have been able to think of one. Instead, he just stuttered foolishly for awhile before folding back his ears in defeat, his face red under his fur, completely embarrassed. "You hate me now."

Mitch just laughed again. "If I hated you, you wouldn't be sitting here in my dorm room, would you?"

Ky blinked, looking at him. "You... you mean you're cool with it?"

He nodded. "Of course! You're a nice guy. It'd be stupid to let something like that mess us up."

Ky brightened up a bit. "Great!"

There was about a minute or so of silence, neither of the two knowing just what to say next. It was Ky who finally spoke.

"So, um... how about... you? Do... you like guys too?"

Mitch gave a little chuckle. Ky froze, regretting that he'd asked, holding his breath as he waited for an answer.

However, that answer wouldn't be coming just yet. It was just Ky's luck that Mitch's cell phone would ring. Mitch blinked, pulling it out of his pocket and looking at the screen. "That time already?" He answered it. "Jakey! You out? ...Ha, alright, alright, we're coming, okay? Give us five minutes and we'll be there. See ya in a bit."

Ky sighed, standing up. They were late for lunch, and Jakey was waiting for them. Maybe Mitch would forget about it all and life would just continue. Already, the husky didn't even seem to have remembered Ky's question, or that he liked other males. Maybe the phone call just blew it out of his mind. Ky would have been very grateful for that.

However, unknown to Ky, the wolf's sexuality and his question were anything but gone from Mitch's mind. This would most definitely be an interesting friendship!

Leo, meanwhile, had been on his way to the dorm room. He was feeling a little bad about the way things went earlier, so he was going to talk to Ky about it, and maybe just explain a few things. Maybe that would make things a little less tense between them, and between his teammates. He didn't want to make himself Everest Hall's resident jerk.

He walked into the dorm room. "Ky? You in here?" he called. There wasn't an answer. Ky must still have been at lunch, or maybe just exploring.

"Oh well," he said aloud to himself. "I'll see him later on." He put his backpack and laptop on his bed and left the room, paws folded behind his head. As he was walking, however, he thought he could hear Ky. It sounded like a bunch of grunts and whimpers, but it definitely sounded like Ky. He stopped, listening closely. The sounds were coming from the dorm room belonging to that husky Ky had been with earlier. He moved closer to the door, listening.

"Heh, you're good, Ky!"

"Thanks! You too. Nice sleeper-hold!"

Leo shrugged. So that's what the noises were. Ky and his husky friend had been wrestling. In either case, Ky was definitely in there. He held his paw up, about to knock on the door, but then he put it back down, frozen. He really didn't even feel like being social with Ky, let alone Ky's new friend. Contemplating whether or not to knock, he just stood there, paws at his sides.

After a couple minutes or so of thinking, and of silence inside the room, Leo finally raised his paw again. He was going to just knock, talk, and get this over with. However, what he heard next made him freeze again.

"So, Ky."

"Hm?"

"You like guys, don'tcha?"

Leo stood there, stunned, paw in midair.

"What?"

"You like guys, don'tcha?"

"W-what are you talking about? What makes you think that?"

"I did_not_grab your butt!"

The husky laughed. "Okay, I added that on. So, do ya?" Leo listened closely, expecting Ky to deny it right away, insulted.

"I... um... I-I just... a-and Dakota was... and y-you didn't... umm... ngh... you hate me now."

Leo's eyes widened.Great, he thought. My roommate's gay. Just what I need. He could hear the husky laugh. "If I hated you, you wouldn't be sitting here in my dorm room, would you?"

"You... you mean you're cool with it?"

"Of course! You're a nice guy. It'd be stupid to let something like that mess us up."

"Great!"

Just wonderful. For all Leo knew, this husky could be gay as well. He shook his head, walking away from the room. Dealing with Ky all year seemed like it would be hard enough already. Dealing with a_gay_ Ky would be even harder. He shuddered at the very thought of it as he walked down the stairs and through the exit of Everest Hall.
