#8 of Grand Duel Academy

Hey all! It's time for the first major long arc! The school-wide tournament! I hope that all of you are ready for your characters to get their duel on, and I'm glad to write it all for you to enjoy! It may not be immediate that your sona gets showcased, but I promise, I WILL get to you all! Feel free to post your opinions on what I thought up for the tournament, and prep for some chapters coming in the next few days!

Several weeks have passed since we last saw our lovely couple. Since that day, Shimmer's been hanging out in Rose and Hudson's dorm room. Not that either of them minded, it usually meant that they would play games or duel all night long. This was one such time, as Rose and Hudson were working on tweaking their new decks, when there was a knock at the door.

Rose: Sweet, she's here. Hudson: About damn time.

Rose hops off his bed, smiling as he gets the door. Shimmer was there in her usual outfit, same as always.

Rose: Jeez, do you have like 3 of everything in your closet or something? Shimmer: Five actually. So, how's the new deck coming? Rose: Nearly done, just putting the finishing touches. Shimmer: Cool.

She takes her usual place at Rose's desk, the Lopunny tossing her a soda as he gets one for himself and one for Hudson. She cracks it open, chugging a bit before putting it down.

Shimmer: So, how's your deck going, Hudson? Hudson: It's actually looking really good. I think it's got a lot of potential. Rose: Yeah, just cuz it's a meta archetype

Hudson: Oh, shut up! Rose: Hey, I never said that's a bad thing. What about your deck, hun? Shimmer: Done, ready to go.

Rose: Perfect. Hey, guys, check this out.

Rose grabs his D-Pad, going to the School Announcements and starting one of them up. The school was going to have its annual Mystery Tournament. Students and faculty could sign up for it, but only the Chancellor herself knew what the true tournament would be. No one would know until the day of it.

Hudson: I keep hearing about it. Some of the returning students said that last year was a giant-ass labyrinth.

Shimmer: Would've loved to see how that worked.

Rose: It's in a few days, and there's still some slots. Plus, the winner usually gets some kind of cash prize! You guys in? Hudson: Definitely, can't wait to give this deck a test run. Shimmer: Sure, why not? Rose: Sweet. I'll register the three of us.

Rose enters them in, flopping back on his bed.

Rose: Alright. Can't wait to see what'll happen.

Hudson: Me either. Shimmer: Same.

A few more days pass, and soon, it's the day of the tournament. The three friends all head to the Academy courtyard, decks in their deck boxes on their belts and disks on their arms. There's a good bunch of others there by then, more coming in afterwards. When the gates are closed, around 80 students and teachers were there, all prepping. Eventually, the speakers ring out with feedback, followed by the Chancellor's voice.

Ignis: Welcome to the Grand Duel Academy's annual Mystery Tournament. I'm sure you're all anxious and raring to go. But first, we must get you to your starting positions. Everyone, please take out your D-Pads.

There's a rustling as everyone gets them out. The screen has changed to a map of the island, a spot lit up on it, different for everyone, as well as a marker for their own person.

Ignis: Please head to the spot marked on your D-Pads. You will have 30 minutes to reach your spot. When you are there, remain there until you receive further instructions.

Rose: Damn, we're really far from each other.... Hudson: Yeah. This is gonna be interesting... Shimmer; Well, see ya'll later, I'm gonna head to my spot.

Hudson: Yeah. Best of luck, guys. Rose; You guys too.

Everyone heads out, and soon, everyone is in their spots. The island-wide speakers turn on again.

Ignis: I'm glad everyone was able to find their starting positions. Now....it's time to reveal the challenge for this year's tournament.

The screen went blank, followed by an animation, a loud announcer voice speaking.

Announcer: WELCOME to the Grand Duel Academy's annual Mystery Tournament, and this year's challenge...CREST QUEST! As you all know, the symbol of our duel academy is a purple ten-pointed star. After this, all of you will receive a Star Crest, a pin that you wear on your vests or whatever clothes you have. You will notice that the point sections are empty, save for one with a pin in it that is designed like the point. That is a Crest Piece. Your challenge is to fill in the entire Star Crest with Crest Pieces. Each time you duel an opponent, you must wager Crest Pieces. It is up to you and your opponent to decide how much you want to bet per duel. The only limit is that you may not wager more than the either of you have on you at any one time. If you run out of Crest Pieces, you are out of the tournament! Once you collect 10 Crest Pieces, please come to the Zenith Arena, where you'll be entered into the final tournament! We have 80 participants, so that means 8 contestants will be in the tournament in the end! We will compete in a single elimination tournament from there, and the winner at the end will win the fabulous prize we have for the competitor! Good luck, and we'll see you at the final tournament!

The video stops, Ignis back.

Ignis: We have spent all of the summer planning for this tournament. We are sure it will be a roaring success. Now, your D-Pads will work as your means of stat tracking. You can have it display a map of the area with your location, or use it to show the list of who's left in the tournament, as well as how many Crest Pieces they have. You are allowed to use it to contact anyone if you so choose. The island-wide portion will take place over 3 days. We will be sure to provide enough food and drink for you when you need it, as there will be stations all over the island for you to get anything you need at any time. While there, you are protected from any challenges, so if you need a break, go and grab a bite to eat. There will be full ceasfires in effect from 11 PM to 7 AM every night, to allow those remaining to get some rest. Now, good luck to everyone!

She disappears, as the D-Pads shift to show a 5-minute countdown. Everyone is anxious to begin, as it quickly hits the last few seconds, everyone counting down, until...

Everyone: 3...2...1...GO!

An air horn rings out, signaling the beginning of Day 1 of the tournament!
