  • * * Pity of an Angel -4- Shadows glided across the ceiling, his eyes darting at any movement that made itself known on the white surface through the dark. The memories of the night before filled his mind while fear clutched at his throat, keeping him silent and afraid to speak or even move. Bright red numbers shined in his eyes, ticking away the seconds. He didn't want to sleep, passing a glance back to the shadows, then back to the clock, just as it struck twelve. --- An open sky showed itself to him as he awoke, staring up to clouds high above him, they seemed to be so close, yet were so far away. The otter sat up to see a solid black fox staring at him, standing only feet away. His cothing resembled that of the angel he had first met, except his attire was more of a solid white suit then a gown. He stepped up, looking down on him with a sincere look. "please get up, Sindain..." he asked, standing in a very formal manner. "who are you?" he asked as he stood. "my name's Sal, an angel asked to speak with you, such as Las did." "Las?" he asked. "yes, the figure from your dream the night before." "oh, that thing" he said, rubbing his arm. "not a thing..." the fox said, "more like a her, and just the opposite of me." The otter looked at him strangely, "a white vixen?" The fox smiled, "right, both she and I were asked to give you a taste of what might be. She had it easy, she just used your death to scare the shit out of you, and I assume it's a given what your hell would be like." The otter felt his wrist, remembering the pain that felt so real. "Wallowing in the darkness while forever spilling your own, black blood" the fox stated aloud, speaking what Sindain was thinking. He turned away, holding himself as the fox stepped up behind him, placing his paw on his shoulder. "But now it's my turn to show you." The otter looked at him. "What will you show me?" he asked. The fox put his paw against the otter's forehead, "shut your eyes, and think of a familiar place, a place where warmth fills your heart, and time knows no bounds." He did as he was asked, seeking a memory of such a place. His eyes open, and the fox was gone. He stood in the street, facing the house he grew up in and remembered as a child; yet, it wasn't run down. Its blue paint, windows, yard, doors, all perfect and clean. He stepped up to sidewalk, the air around him crisp, he couldn't grasp how real it was. He began to cry, feeling at home, then, a voice called from within, one he's never heard before but knew all to well. "Sindain, time for lunch " it called to him. "mom?!" he cried aloud, running for the door, tears streaming down his face as he grabbed the knob and swung the door open, then he woke up. --- "You go home tomorrow," Karin said, filling out forms as he lay in bed. He didn't respond, just keeping his gaze on the trees outside, they shifted in the calm winds as birds glided in to land on their branches. Half a day gone, his lunch, a discarded tray of undercooked chicken and supposed mashed potatoes sat untouched next to him. "hear me?" she asked. He looked to her, to the one he loved. She knew nothing of what was to happen that night, how she'll wake up without him by her side. He nodded, trying to pass off a fake smile to her; it must have worked as she had smiled back. "Be sure to give me a call when you get home" she said with a grin. "Of course..." he said hesitantly. "You alright?" "Ya, just thinking about how I'm gonna die in a few hours." he thought to himself. "I'm fine..." he said, holding back his will to cry, the thoughts about how he'll lose her forever and probably will spend eternity in hell for his sins ravaged inside his mind. "Will you spend my last night here with me?" he asked innocently, saying more truth then she knew. She smiled, "of course, I'll just need to drop off some things down at my office later own, but I'll stay with you." She said as she left the room, leaving him to his thoughts as the door closed behind her. He sniffled, feeling anger develop in his stomach. He gritted his teeth and turned in his bed, kicking the food tray and sending it out the window, splattering some potatoes against the glass. "Damnit!" Night once again, same shadows above, and same darkness around. He stayed awake, stroking her fur, she who lay against his stomach, sound asleep as he stared into the dark. His mind still ran with fear and angst, but in the back of it all, under all the memories and pain, he could hear the soft words that came from her before she fell asleep. He looked down at her, combing her fur down her neck; she shifted and groaned silently in her sleep at his touch. "I love you, too..." he whispered, brushing his paw over her brow and kissing her cheek. He looked over at the clock, its red light illuminating a piece of paper sitting on the counter with it, words carefully written and left for her to find. Less then a minute remained, and he wished to stay those precious seconds with his love, down to the very end. Click. White again. He hated white now. He blinked. "Hello again." Las said, standing extremely close to him, she was shorter then he remembered. He didn't step away. "Hello Las." He said calmly. She smiled and pulled down her hood. He was right, and she was quite a beautiful vixen at that, her fur was as white as their surroundings, almost making her face vanish. "I would never have thought the bringer of death would hold such beauty." He said with a smile. She sighed, "Make a few mistakes in life and look what it gets ya. Not many souls get the chance you had, I sure as hell didn't, so lets hope that you can earn your right to live in peace," She said with a grin, "or I may just end up paying you a visit." "Then I hope for the best outcome, no offence." He said. She smiled, "a normal response. Now, you must speak calmly and clearly when answering during your judgment. Don't lie, they'll know." "that it?" he asked. "just turn around." She replied. He did and faced three huge wooden pedestals, the middle being tallest. On both sides, two door stood in the emptiness, both exactly the same. He turned back to her, but she was gone. "Your name, please" a voice echoed, causing him to turn around again. He looked straight up, but couldn't see those who spoke. " .Sindain Decker, sir " he stated loudly and clearly. "aw, the special one you were given another chance at life after you chose to end yours early, correct?" the voice asked. "..yes sir..." he answered. "well, what have you seen in this short time you were given, what have you found?" "...love..." he replied. "aw yes, and describe to us this 'love' you had felt..." "...it was for one that filled the emptiness within me... one that I could have truly been happy with, if I had my whole life to live... to have had been taken from her..." he paused, fighting back tears, "that is my hell..." "I see... and is this spoken from the heart? Do not let our beloved angel's sacrifice be in vain." "sacrifice?" "yes, to be given a second chance doesn't come without a price." "...her wings..." "yes, she gave up that which represented all that is beauty in heaven, for you..." "but why?" "that you'll have to ask her yourself, but we're are not finished here. What you've done shouldn't have been, the consequence for such a deed has but only one outcome. But, we are here to listen; now, is what you say truth?" "...yes, I speak the truth..." There was an elongated silence before the voice spoke again, startling him. "please enter the door to your right..." "yes sir.." he said calmly, looking over at the door. He stepped up to the it, his paw shook slightly and he swallowed. He closed his eyes, his paw felt for the golden knob, finding it, then turning it. He was blinded in a light as he stepped through, the door vanished into the white. He blinked, opening his eyes to the angel. She was even more beautiful then before. He walked up to her, looking into her eyes, feeling happy to see her again. She smiled to him. "...tell me your name..." he asked quietly. "Fe.." she replied. "Fe... is this my heaven?" he asked. "yes, to be whatever you wish it to be" she said, looking down. "...why..." he asked softly. "hmm?" she looked up. "why did you do what you did?" "...to save you" "but why... Why give up such beauty for me " "what, you're telling me you still don't see?" she asked with a warm smile. "see?" "see why I had witnessed your life, why I did what I did... and why I'm here, in your heaven" "no, I..." "just think about it... I was there for your birth, for your life... and I'm here for you now..." she said, reaching down and holding his paw in hers. He looked at her, her body, her face, her eyes. He paused, staring blindly as a word came to him, one he's never spoken before in a way that instilled such warmth and love in his heart. "......mom?" ~End "In the nadir that fills the shadows, I fear no longer of when again I die, for I have your love to keep me strong, when even angels cry"
