Two Dogs Over a Bone

Chapter 10

When Evelyn entered Dick's bedchamber, he was snipping off the vixen's dress with a pair of scissors. Slowly, her slender midriff and high breasts were revealed as her deerskin dress fell away in tatters. She was still bound at the wrists and ankles and had been stretched over the edge of Dick's bed so that her breasts were pointed at the ceiling. They were heaving as she grunted angrily behind her gag. Haskell carefully squeezed one, then sucked the nipple into his lips and rolled his tongue against it. Dick, meanwhile, pushed the fox's bound ankles toward her head and carefully slipped two fingers in her sex. She began to buck and scream behind the gag.

"That's enough!" Evelyn shouted, lunging into the room.

Haskell nearly tumbled off the bed, he was so startled. Evelyn gave him a hard backslap that sent him staggering into the wall. With watering eyes and blushing cheeks, he scrambled out the door, buttoning his trousers as he fled.

Dick got indignantly to his feet. Behind him, the fox lay panting on the bed, the tatters of her dress hanging off the bulge of her breasts. She twisted to put her legs down and accidentally rolled to the floor, where she fell hard on her face. Dick ignored her, instead scowling at Evelyn.

"How dare you strike my servant!"

"You're lucky I didn't do more than that," Evelyn snapped. "She is my game. I don't recall your help in taming her back in the forest!"

Dick eased down on the edge of the bed, looking at Evelyn in amusement. "Come now," he said, pushing the licks of red mane back from his eyes. "Don't tell me you're jealous, Evie. I thought you didn't want to marry me."

"Don't be absurd, you self-absorbed, stuffed-shirt --"

"Calm down, darling cousin, I'm teasing," Dick said. His lips spread in the slow smile he used when he wanted something desperately. Evelyn glanced at the pretty fox twisting angrily on the floor and realized for the first time how badly he wanted her. But why?

"Don't tell me you want her for yourself," Dick went on and laughed shortly. "Didn't realize you had a hard-on for the thing too. Though I must admit . . ." He looked at the fox on the floor and smiled darkly at her heaving breasts. "How could you not?"

Evelyn avoided looking at the fox and regarded Dick calmly.

Dick's smile widened. "Did you make yourself lovely for her?" he teased.

At Nana's insistence, Evelyn had allowed the servants to bathe and dress her in a long blue gown, the color of which matched her eyes almost perfectly. It was short-waisted, soft muslin, and the skirts of it hung loosely from her breasts to her ankles. Underneath were flat slippers, and around her naked throat a choker with a cameo at its center. Her white mane was tied to the side, and the curls spilled over one shoulder and down her breasts. A white shawl hung from her arms and she pulled it tighter as she regarded Dick curiously. She dressed for the court that would preside that morning. Though it was evident from the lines around her eyes that she was incredibly tired, she had no choice but to make an appearance at court that day: after ducking out the day before, the gossip would be spreading like wildfire. It would be more than cruel to leave Charles to face it alone.

"You should make an appearance with Charles," Evelyn said evenly. "Your mother's little spies will report back that you've been partying and lying about."

Dick's eyes danced over her in amusement. "Why the sudden concern for my wellbeing, dearest Evelyn? Just the other day you couldn't give a fig for my spats with my mother. 'Let the old bat catch him at it' and so on and so forth."

Evelyn was silent. The fox made a noise, and she glanced at it sympathetically.

"Or could it be," said Dick slowly as it dawned on him, "that you care about the savage and are trying to maneuver me away from it?"

Evelyn adjusted her shawl and her blue eyes trailed over the walls unhappily. "Don't be absurd - I - she's a pelt. You soil her and I'll have no chance with the king --"

"Ha!" Dick slapped his thigh. "As if the king will give a damn about some fox pelt once he lays eyes on you." He shook his head, grinning incredulously. "You care about the savage! Unbelievable. And here I thought you just wanted to finger her. D'you know they're reported to have worms and ticks? Parasites. Things that crawl in your nose."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed coldly. "And yet you and Haskell were about to plunge yourselves in all her worm-infested holes!"

Dick laughed. "I've been to Dr. Regal. I've got my shots." He adjusted his cravat and glanced at the fox on the floor.

Evelyn looked at her too. She was lying on her side with her breasts smashed together nicely and seemed to have gone very still and quiet . . . as if she was listening to their conversation! It suddenly struck her that the fox knew their language. The night before in the forest, she had spoken some jibbering words with what was obviously her friend. Evelyn wouldn't forget the tears in her eyes, the wail of despair as the vixen knelt over the fallen fox. But Evelyn knew she hadn't killed the creature, and it was incredibly lucky to have survived such a direct wound. At the time, she'd thought about taking both foxes, but she couldn't possibly have carried them alone. She decided to take the one with the red mane. It had the superior pelt and was . . . indescribably beautiful. She gathered the unconscious vixen in her arms and was turning away when she heard movement in the grass. She turned back to the body of the fallen fox. . . . but it wasn't there.

Evelyn's eyes went back to Dick, and her lip curled. "Why d'you want her so badly? Look at you. You're about to drop." She nodded at her cousin, who was indeed sagging as he sat on the bed.

"Of course I am," Dick said, curling his lip in turn. "Charles and I spent all bloody night looking for you. Tramping through the mud with half the estate, screaming your name at the top of our lungs, shivering in the fog and cold. And what do I get for it?" He glanced at the fox on the floor again. "Let me have her, Evie. We have a score to settle."

Evelyn laughed dryly. "Did you forget what you did to me yesterday? You despicable bastard, you tried to rape me!"

Dick's ears flattened when she raised her voice. "I did no such thing," he muttered, like an abashed child. She looked at him and thought she was the only one who could cow him so. It was pathetic.

"Ha! You can't even own up to it!" Evelyn practically shrieked. "You will touch her over my dead body!"

"I'll touch her! I touch her in places that will make you cream!" Dick shouted back and snapped to his feet.

Evelyn blushed to her mane and resisted the urge to back away as his fiery gaze pierced her. "She's mine!" she hissed, pointing a pink nail at the fox on the floor. "Mine!"

Dick shook his head in disgust. "Listen to yourself! You care more about some dirty fox than me!" She took a step back when he grabbed her upper arms and her large breasts were pressed together from the motion. His fingers were painfully hard. She squirmed angrily, her face twisting against the liquor on his breath. "Me, who you've known all your damn life," he hissed at her. "But what does it matter if you don't give a damn about me? You're going to marry the king, aren't you? Or at least be his whore."

Evelyn broke free and staggered back. She and Dick regarded each other as silence filled the room. His red mane was tumbling in his eyes. He was tousled and undone, his eyes were red, and he looked so . . . torn and sad. It struck her for the first time that he truly wanted her. Not out of carnal lust, but perhaps . . . something more.

Evelyn swallowed hard. "Are you in love with me, Dick?"

Dick laughed weakly. "Always so direct, Evelyn. It's hardly suiting for a proper lady. I thought the duchess would have taught you better. Coy and demure. Anything more and you're a tramp." He turned away, rubbing his tired eyes.

Evelyn looked at the fox on the floor, who was watching them both in amazement and disgust. Evelyn couldn't blame her: they were fighting over the vixen like two common dogs over a scrap of meat.

"So you do love me," Evelyn said to Dick's back. She wanted to touch his shoulder but knew he would only jerk away. "What about Charles?"

"What about him?" he said darkly, angrily. He waved an idle paw. "It's none of your affair. You're going to live in the castle with the king. What your brother and I do will no longer concern you."

"Richie . . ."

"Don't call me that."

Evelyn sighed.

Dick went to a cushioned chair near the window. He sat, and the sunlight played across his red mane, dazzling the tips into orange flame. His trousers were undone and his cravat was hanging off. He tiredly unbuttoned his waistcoat, and she could see his white chest, hard with muscles. He looked at her wearily. "Yesterday I thought when you decided to marry me that maybe . . . maybe it was because you actually _wanted_to. Heh. More the fool I."

"I'm not giving myself to the king," Evelyn insisted. "I know he'll ask," she said miserably. "But I'll insist on . . ." She glanced at the fox. "I'll insist on offering the pelt. The creature has a fine pelt. Very fine. Worth thousands, at least. The queen wouldn't be able to resist. And in exchange, the king could ask Giselle to call off her dogs."

Dick shook his head slowly. "You're mad, Evie. The queen hates you. You know it."

Evelyn tossed her paws and her fangs flashed. "What the hell else am I supposed to do? Marry you?"

Dick glared at her. "Would it be so bloody awful?"

Evelyn folded her arms again and lifted a brow.

"Alright, alright," Dick said, rolling his eyes. "I know that when I drink I . . ."

"Become a monster?" Evelyn supplied for him. "A rapist? A complete ass?"

"But I'd stop all that for you, Evie."

Given the earnest in Dick's eyes, Evelyn almost believed him. Almost. "My brother," she said, looking away. "I know you love Charles. I know you love him deeply."

"You know nothing," the marquis said darkly.

Evelyn looked at him and was startled by the fury burning in his eyes. Before she could respond, a voice made them both look around.

"M'lord?"

Sarah was standing meekly in the door, her paws folded on her apron, her head down. She was clad in a simple servant's gown with a white apron pulled over it. Her long mane clung to her shoulders and back like a shadow, hiding her humble expression as it tumbled in her face.

"What is it, Sarah?" Dick said wearily. He glanced at the clock. "Ah. Time for my morning . . . massage."

Evelyn shook her head in disgust as Dick gestured and Sarah quickly entered the room. She looked at Evelyn and hesitated, but when the duchess said nothing, she reached behind and untied her apron. It fell to the floor. She reached behind for the buttons on the back of her dress and hesitated again, looking at Evelyn sheepishly.

"Undress, girl," Dick said in a bored voice. "I'm tired. I want to unwind and get to bed."

Evelyn frowned. "You should get dressed and appear at court, I said. Your mother need not think anything amiss."

Dick snorted. "If I _did_appear at court, my mother would think something was amiss." He gestured tiredly at the girl, who now stood before them in nothing but her white bloomers.

Sarah glanced shyly at Evelyn and rubbed her arm, her small breasts shivering.

Evelyn looked away. "Go on."

Sarah brightened and knelt between the strong thighs of the marquis. She pulled his trousers open wider and prepared to rub his erection with her breasts, but he placed his paw on her head and stopped her.

"And what about the savage?" he said, looking at Evelyn. "You'll let me have her? Don't worry. I won't spoil the pelt. She'll be bathed afterwards. Perhaps put in a box."

The vixen on the floor growled angrily.

Evelyn frowned. "You won't hurt her?"

Dick smiled slowly. "Go on to court, Evie. The savage could stand for a bit a fun before she dies."
