#6 of Bridger Cross Country

A day just isn't a day without one more frustration. Written 2015.

The wolf walked down the hall and collected the folder for her next client. She groaned in her head as she read the species. A catgirl was definitely not what she needed in this mood. The whole reason they existed was enough to get her hackles up and since they never had any genetic family, they usually only came in looking for a new master. She took a deep breath and opened the door to the lobby. "Koneko. Catgirl Koneko."

The mostly human creature bounced out of her seat and hurried across the room, much to the relief of the black panther beside her. "I'm Koneko!" She held out her small paw with a big smile on her human face.

The wolf looked her over, then sighed and headed down the hall, "Follow me." She sat behind her desk and looked across at the young human eagerly waiting to be addressed. "Would you take off your hat, please."

The girl shyly pulled the soft cap down to reveal her cat-like ears, then held it in her lap and sat like she had just been scolded harshly.

"Your request states that you want to find others of your kind. You do realize that you were created, not born."

The catgirl smiled, "Oh, I know. I'm number seven-six-seven-two. That means I have over seven-thousand older sisters and some younger sisters, too."

Lilly watched her get more animated as she spoke and almost took joy in bursting her bubble, "Not exactly. Your number is for the attempt, not success. Most of your sisters probably didn't make it and some might be brothers instead."

Koneko started to get sad at the thought of her sisters dying, then brightened, "I could have brothers, too?"

Lilly was confused by her quick emotions, "Yyes, but they're not exactly brothers and sisters."

The catgirl tilted her head in confusion, "Then what are they?"

Every programmed quirk irritated the wolf more, but she kept telling herself that this chimera was not responsible for her own existence. "They're clones, copies."

"Twins?" She smiled excitedly.

"No, not twins."

"But if each numbered group comes from the same genetic source, wouldn't we be siblings, regardless of the method of conception?"

Lilly stared, stunned at the sudden revelation of intelligence from the catgirl smiling across the desk at her, but Koneko spoke before she could voice her surprise.

"My Chan-chan worked for Nekogenetics. He's really smart."

The wolf sighed as she remembered that the innocent behavior was also part of their programming. If she was going to make it to lunch, she needed to turn off her emotions and just process this client. "We don't have records of corporate numbering."

"I can get those! Would that help?" She bounced into the chair, crouched as if she were ready to pounce.

Lilly held her impulses, "It ... would. I can't do anything without a list. Do you need anything else?"

Koneko started to speak, then stopped to think dramatically, then brightened again, "Can you give me the number for the horse and squirrel that were just here?"

"We're not a match-making service."

"Oh, I know. I was going to get it from them, but they got out the door before I could get their attention again. They were telling me a story and I didn't get to hear the end. I really liked them, too. I think we could be great friends. You're nice, but there's just something ..."

"Okay." She knew catgirls were infamous for their curiosity and persistence and stopped her before she could continue into oblivion. She quickly grabbed a notepad and wrote down the horse's info, then held it out.

Koneko jumped up to grab it and held it to her chest for a moment, then smiled and jumped onto the desk.

Lilly stood up quickly and held up her paw, "NO!" Despite their hidden intelligence, catgirls needed firm and simple commands. "Get down from my desk, ... please."

The mostly human creature stepped down gently with a wounded posture and expression, then instantly brightened again and looked at the paper in her paw. "Thank you." She bounced to the door and opened it, then stopped and looked back at the wolf with an innocent smile. "Nya!" She dashed out, closing the door quickly behind her.

Lilly took a deep breath, then exhaled and collapsed in her chair with her head on her desk. She wondered how anyone could enjoy living with such a creature. She lifted her head and smiled as she realized that she now had a whole hour to recover and change the flow of her day.
