The accidental Night
Dredger floated uncomfortably in the gaze of the Album director for the Gateway centre. Six foot five inches tall, humans would say he and all Amplus like him looked like orcas. Down his back was a series of large scars and some smaller ones that disrupt his smooth black skin. He was reasonably built musculature wise for his breed and size, a six pack of abdominal muscles and large pectorals, the rest of him was in proportion to his build. He had the usual layer of blubber just under his skin which smoothed all his features, rounding them out and making him more aqua-dynamic. He wore his wet suit while in the office, only wearing it because it covered the scars down his back. Its colouration was similar to his own although it was patched up in places and the colours varied slightly. The black was faded and the white was stained with dirt and other various things, clearly a result from being overused and reasonably old, it was also tight on him, showing that it had been some time since he had been able to afford a new one.
The Album, going by the name Old Grey Manager, seemed to judge him rather harshly with nothing more than a gaze and that fact was making him more and more uncomfortable.
"So..." The Album started "Just why should we employ you?" The large male Amplus gave a slight grumble at the way he was being spoken to like he was nothing more than scum, even more dismissive than even an Amplus would normally expect. They both spoke in their native language, the conversation sounding like a series of clicks and whistles which, to a human would be confusing but possibly melodious if listened to in the right way. The room was filled with water up to about one meters depth. Dredger still wore his suit regardless.
"I have the training and knowledge in the field," Dredger responded "I also have a good employment history of several years doing this specific field."
"'Good' is not what I can recall hearing," The Album said wading around the desk to look over the Amplus like he was a piece of meat "Two years ago, you were working at Horizon Deep Mining do you remember that? Your actions lead to an accident that caused a breach of the mine shaft causing the deaths of almost a dozen Phinx ses. You were the only survivor from that shaft, I can see the scars on your head where you must have impacted with the walls and I'm sure there are more down your body under that suit... Just why would we employ someone with a history like yours?" Giving a sigh he looked up to the Album.
"How blunt may I be sir?" he asked. "I want your honest answer, I have no time for lies or for you to 'sugar coat' it as the humans would say."
"How could I ever forget that accident? It has caused me nothing but trouble and heart ache... I was even abandoned by my family due to the whole incident..." he started slowly "I have been unemployed for almost the whole two years since the accident, I've come to you for employment simply because I have nowhere else to turn.."
"Very well, thank you for being honest," Wading back behind his desk he looked over the documents on his desk before he spoke up again "I have decided we will employ you this at this time. You will be sent to the gate site and your job will be dredging up the underwater ditches for new lines, conduits and pylon pits for new building foundations. You will begin work at the beginning of next week, until then you can make yourself comfortable at your new home. As we have several dredgers at this site, if you should interact with humans, your name will be Damaged Dredger; Understand? It won't be easy, but if you want the employment..."
"Thank you for this opportunity, you will not regret it sir."
"I had better not," Came the simple response "Dismissed."
The diving bell was cramped, especially with the blower on his back. The bell looked like an upside down ice-cream cone made of thick metal. It hung down form a supporting frame above that was able to move from one work site to the next. On the inside of it were hangers for the variety of tools required for various digging tasks. A huge sword-like shovel he used when he needed to move or break through rocks or boulders, its name sadly unpronounceable to humans. There were a couple of smaller hand-held tanks that had 'emergency oxygen' written on them for if there was a problem with the air supply or the bell developed a leak. There was normally enough air inside the bell for up to eight hours of work, and it was refilled before each shift. He took a few deep breaths before he submerged himself again to return to work.
Dredger worked quickly but accurately as he blasted the path for the new underwater conduits. He wore nothing while working except the backpack blaster. On the Human side of the portal its equivalent was a leaf blower, however this one worked by pumping water instead of air to blast away the sand and silt on the sea floor. He didn't hate his line of work, but he wasn't fully happy with it, he knew however that this was his last option short of exile, and the hours of being alone working so deep under water was close to exile anyway. He gave a mental sigh as he exposed a large boulder in the way and swam back up to the bell, switching to the shovel to clear it. He looked up to see a submersible pull into the facility above him before he returned to his work deciding he would find someway to get some way to get something to play music for him to listen to, to help with the long passage of time and loneliness.
Inside, the human passenger of the submersible stood face to face with a Longos. It had been a long trip down to the gateway, and he had been looking forward to going home so he could sleep in his own bed.
"I am sorry Hayworth Alexander Scott," The Longos said "The gate can only be used once every five days. It's not safe for you to use it for another three days." The bottle nose dolphin looking Phin seemed reasonably distressed over the problem, but it didn't look like it overly worried him.
"Oh really?" The human responded with a sigh, realizing the Phin had read his ID without understanding that his last name was written first "Learn something new every day, well you're probably going to need to find me some accommodations for me here then." The Phin nodded.
"We will look into that, please go wait in the lounge and we will inform you of your accommodations." The Phin turned and swam away quickly, his tail flicking every so often behind him leaving the human alone. He gave a sigh and started wading his way to the lounge, trudging up one of the long hallways to the human waiting lounge a floor above.
"Well I guess it can't be helped," He muttered to himself "Why didn't anyone tell me about the one week waiting period?" Continuing on his way he stopped to look out of a window. He could see a Amplus outside with a large device on his back working his way towards the airlock that was directly bellow where the human stood. He couldn't help blush thinking the Phin was naked, not realising that he actually was nude out there in the deep crushing depths. Peeling himself away from the window before his suit started to tent, he made his way to the lounge and sat down waiting for the eventual news. The lounge was unexciting, its floor sat above the water level of the rest of the installation. There were a couple of other people in the lounge who were simply talking amongst themselves. The floor was covered in the usual compound like the rest of B72, similar to concrete, made from a collection of minerals, rocks and powdered coral and was a light bluish grey colour. The chairs were padded and covered in a light blue, heavy duty and water resistant fabric and stood off the floor from on a pedestal of same material as the floor.
Alexander, or Alex as he preferred to be called, was a fairly attractive looking human. Flowing auburn hair trimmed stylishly to frame his face and deep green eyes. While his suit was designed to give some modesty in the crotch with padding to dome it out, it still left the rest of his body reasonably well presented. The suit covered all of him much like a Phin's except for his hands and head, it was mostly black but had blue patch over his shoulders, and hot pink was at the neck line and sleeve ends. He truly didn't mind the suit, it being custom made for him and all. He enjoyed wearing it as often as he was able to even wearing it on land earth when he went to the beach or just to swim in the pool in his yard. He was toned and muscled but not heavily, showing that he did go to the gym but didn't live there. He quite liked the way that the suit smoothed out his features beneath it making him look like he had a layer of fat over his body. That look was one of the reasons he had a secret love for the Phin's of Water Earth, he had wanted to come to Water Earth for quite a long while. When his parents said they needed someone to travel and handle the public relations for some of their holdings, he had leapt at the opportunity to head to Water Earth.
He sat for some time in the lounge, listening to the others for a while but due to their distance from him he couldn't understand what they were saying.
"Ah here you are Hayworth Alexander Scott," A different Longos appeared at the doorway he was slightly taller than the previous one, but looked almost identical save for a few markings "We have made accommodation for you, we apologise that it's only an Amplus's room, but it's the best we could do on such short notice and for such a length of time."
"That's understandable," He responded and stood "I hope I'm not inconveniencing anyone."
"Not at all Hayworth Alexander Scott, Please follow me and I'll take you to your room." he turned to leave and Alex stood up.
"Please go slowly, I can't move as fast as you can in water." he called out as he followed
"Of course Hayworth Alexander Scott."
"What do you mean I need to sleep in THAT room tonight?" Dredger asked his supervisor as he slipped on his wetsuit, stepping into the legs and adjusting his feet in the foot pouches of the suit. He did not need to wear it, but did so to try to hide the scaring that covered his back. They were in the locker room for workers who worked outside in the deep ocean waters.
"Your room had to be given to a high ranking business official from land earth," The Longos retorted "You should feel privileged that such a high classed person is sleeping in YOUR room of all places."
"But the room I've been put in is falling apart!" The Amplus retorted irritably as he pulled up up to his hips and fed his tail through the tail hole in the suit "It's not safe for sleeping in! There has not been any maintenance done in there in months"
"You may accept it, do without a room, or resign, those are your options." he was told sharply as he zipped up his suit, he gave an irritated sigh and got up slowly.
"Yes sir" he simply responded before swimming out. He didn't bother asking why it was him being picked for this 'honor', he already knew that his previous history had stayed with him through to this job. He was treated worse than any of the other Amplus on site and, he sometimes wished he could call them out on it to prove they were. It always brought up what had happened and bad memory's of the trial and not being allowed to the funerals of his former workmates and friends.
"To the bar," he mumbled aloud to himself and swam slowly in the direction of the bar "These memories need drowning."
Dredger floated at the bar and waved his hand at the barkeeper who gave him a look of 'Not you again'.
"The usual please." he said and a glass was placed in front of him and quickly filled with a deep black liquid. It wasn't thick, but more a look of thickened cream to it even tho it flowed easily. Its name was unpronounceable to humans, so it they often called it 'squid ink'. While Phin drinks did not contain alcohol like earth drinks did, it contained another compound that was similarly powerful and had the same effects... and didn't create an allergic reaction in Phins. Picking up the full glass he gave a 'cheers' motion and tossed it back, downing the whole thing in one gulp only for it to be refilled by the bar keeper once it was placed back down.
Alex sighed and looked around the room, it was obviously not for a human but had been rapidly altered for him to comfortably sleep in at least. It was sparsely decorated looking like it had been cleared of any personal effects and the bed was simply a slab of their unique building material, something that would be ok for whatever Phin the room originally belonged to. The slab had been elevated a bit so it sat out of the water for him to sleep on so he could at least be somewhat comfortable and dry. The only things in the room being the bed, a table, and the bathroom off to one side of the room. There were no windows and Alex couldn't help feel he was in probably one of the worst rooms in the facility just from the fact that the walls seemed to need cleaning and maintenance. He stripped off his wetsuit slowly while sitting on the edge of the bed, once nude he folded his suit and placed it on the table before slipping onto the bed. He would need to work out tomorrow what he could do to pass the weekend. Maybe go to the bar and meet some of the workers who were having the days off, or just wander around the facility. He shrugged to himself and turned off the light then rolled over to get some sleep listening to the water slosh and lap around the room.
Dredger stumbled down the hallway towards his room, finding it easier and safer to walk than swim down the hall. Heavily intoxicated, he had completely forgotten about his change of room and stumbled to his own where the human lay. Opening the door, he stumbled inside and closed it behind him waking the human on the bed from the noise. Alex didn't know what was going on and decided to remain quiet for the moment to figure out what was going on in case it was simply maintenance coming in at an odd hour. Stumbling slowly around the bed, Dredger stripped off his own suit leaving it where it lay in the water. He groaned and flopped onto the bed next to the human, and then gave a loud groan when the light was clicked on.
"Umm... Hello?" Alex asked looking down at the Amplus next to him who suddenly cried out with shock and rolled off the bed into the water with a splash, Alex waited for him to surface again before speaking once more "Oops are you ok?"
"Wh...Who are you? Why are you in my room?" He rubbed his head trying to think of what was going on, getting a feeling that he had forgotten something important.
"Oh this is your room, I did hope I'd get to meet you," Alex said "Thank you for letting me stay here in your room."
"Oh seal shit that's right... I was made to change room," He groaned to himself and got up unsteadily "I... I'll go, I'm sorry I disturbed you Sir."
"No, no, you can stay," Alex called stopping him "It's your room I wont force you to leave." he helped the Phin into the bed. It took a couple of moments as the Phin was intoxicated and reluctant, but eventually he got back onto the bed.
"I am sorry if I woke you." Dredger apologised.
"No its fine, I had only just turned off the light," He lied "What is your name Amplus?" the Phin gave a series of clicks and whistles then the white around his eyes flushed red in a blush when he was given a blank look in return.
"Oh sorry, I forgot that you humans can't understand our names, my human name is Damaged Dredger, although I would prefer just Dredger." He said and the human nodded.
"I'm Alexander Scott Hayworth; but just Alex is fine." he responded and patted the Phin on the shoulder softly "It's nice to meet you. Anyway. Lets get some sleep." the Phin nodded and laid down, the light going out a moment later.
They laid in bed together for about an hour, neither one falling asleep but both pretended to sleep. Dredger spent the time using his silent echolocation to probe at the human, examining him with sound waves and couldn't help but start to get aroused at having the human next to him. He had long secretly liked humans, and even though he could never travel to land earth or be part of the Unity program, he had secretly wished for something like this to happen but never thought it would. He rubbed his face and sat up slowly still groaning to himself, and mentally cursing himself for getting that drunk once again. At least he had the weekend off to start feeling better again before he had to face the claustrophobic underwater grindstone again; even if he was going to end up that way again next weekend. Coughing he sat up then blinked when he heard a grumble from beside him on the bed. He turned to look and saw the slowly awakening naked human on the bed next to him, he squeaked loudly in shock and jumped up quickly making water slosh around the room and the human to jolt awake.
"Wha...What's wrong?" Alex asked and looked up to the scared Phin.
"Wh...Who are you? Why are you on my bed?" He asked.
"Mmmph what do you mean? I told you last night I'm Alexander Scott Hayworth." He watched the male rub his face and give a groan of discomfort.
"Oww my head... how much did I drink last night!?" He asked rhetorically "What happened last night?"
"Come here," The human said patting the bed "Sit and I'll tell you everything." Nodding the larger male shifted to sit on the edge of the bed, his back and tail to the human who now examined the scars running down his back.
"I was given your room last night because I am not able to travel through the gate for another two days," Alex started "Last night, you stumbled in and got into bed with me before you realised I was here, when you realised your mistake you tried to leave but I insisted you stay. You seemed rather intoxicated, I didn't want anything bad to happen to you out in the halls; for all I knew you would collapse and drown in the waters" shifting on the bed, Alex placed his hand against and rubbed the large, black, heavily scared back before his hand shifted to rub at the Phin's thick, long tail.
"That's right..." he mumbled remembering the night before, he looked down to see dried seed around his genital slit then over his shoulder to the human "Did... Did we...?" Alex chuckled softly and nodded as he shifted to sit next to him on the edge of the bed.
"If your asking if we got intimate, Yes, we did." He responded and gently kissed the large black shoulder next to him seeing the reddening of the areas under his eyes"Are you ok with that?"
"I guess I am... but I don't even know you..." He responded softly then gave a sigh from his blow hole "How about we have a scrub in the scrubber... then go for breakfast and get to know each other? I would rather get to know the people I have sex with rather than have a one night stand."
"Hmm, I'd like to get to know you too, I'd like that a lot." Alex responded with a smile and they slowly got up together to head to the bathroom, the Phin's belly starting to redden and the humans length starting to thicken and stiffen as they made their way there.
