The water glistens under the sun rays. The air filled with laughter and chatter of those enjoying the summer warmth.

"Every day you sit here in the shade with that sketchy little notebook, Coulah," stated a familiar voice.

"What can I say, I'm living life to the fullest, Ruby."

Ruby was a cheeky but cheerful fox with eyes of a rich ruby red standing at 5 foot 7.

"You can't even look up at me and say that," she exclaimed.

Coulah looks up at Ruby, with her hand on her hips; she smiles and lets out a small giggle.

"Sorry, better luck next time!" He chuckles, "Now go and enjoy the afternoon sun like everyone else and get your tail wet!"

Ruby smiles cheekily and flicks her tail in Coulah's face before she stands on the pools edge and dives in. Ruby's head surfaces the water, releasing a relieved sigh from Coulah.

Coulah's can't help but notice, his heart dropping as he looks up across the pool, his eyes meeting the gaze of another. He blushes, looking back down at his notebook; continuing to doodle and write from where he left off. Coulah quickly glances up looking back at the figure from across the pool. This figure is now turned in the opposite direction leaving Coulah slightly disappointed, but he continues to work on his notebook.

The afternoon dragged on, Leaving Coulah without disturbance as he continues to doodle in his notebook. Coulah looked up to discover the pool had quietened down, but he could not help but be mesmerised by the setting sun, shading the sky in pink and orange. His moment of peace and quiet was abruptly disturbed by a commotion outside the entrance to the pool grounds.

"Coulah, Coulah! Come quick," shouted a voice from the gate.

Coulah approached the gate to where Ruby was standing. Noticing a horde of people in a circle shouting and chanting 'fight, fight, fight'. Coulah pushes his way through the circle to find two people fighting. One was throwing hits and the second was taking it. Thunder, the one throwing punches was a tall, well over 6 foot, pure-bred stallion; his body was muscular with a golden mane and tanned-brown fur. His eyes were a midnight black and he wasn't holding back on his hit. He couldn't see the second figure, but there was no mistaking it; a Wolf of pure black, with golden tipped ears and paws, and fluffy neck fur, standing at no more than 6 foot; his name was Elite. Coulah's heart dropped, not having a clue as to what he should do.

Coulah thought to himself "I need to do something quickly, before this gets out of hand."

Coulah pushes through to the centre of the circle, just missing a punch from the bulky stallion, Thunder. Coulah shouts in anger, "Both of you stop right now and leave. Or, do I have to start banning people from the pool grounds? It is summer so don't try me!"

The crowd slowly dispersed, leaving Coulah alone with Elite. Ruby sat at the gate, impressed with Coulah's change of personality from his somewhat shy one. Coulah had never been alone for a second around Elite. He was one of the popular Wolves in college, but never one that would pick a fight or go out of his way to hurt someone. So this was out of his usual character. Coulah blushed but hid is quickly, looking at the ground. He was lost for words, but also kind of disappointed. His heart sank, noticing droplets of blood staining the cement. He looked up to discover Elite was bleeding. Having taking punches, Elite was left with a cut across his eyebrow and bleeding from his nose.

"Ahh, C-come with me back to the pool grounds and I'll uh, h-help you patch that up in the first-aid room," Coulah stuttered, barely being able to make eye contact.

Elite was still standing where he stood fire minutes ago. He sighs softly and starts to walk the opposite direction of the first-aid room. Left standing on his lonesome, Coulah couldn't help but look disappointed and slightly upset. Elite continued with his pace, the last few seconds before he disappears around the corner, he turns his head. Coulah couldn't help but feel like he was apologizing. Elite's golden eyes turn back around, and he was gone.

Coulah turns back to the pool grounds, not making the slightest bit of eye contact with Ruby. It hurt her to see Coulah like this, but she knew he needed time to himself after all; even Ruby was confused after what she had just witnessed.

Standing in-front of the mirror in the men's room; Coulah bursts out crying. Overwhelmed by emotions, Coulah couldn't think clearly. "What is wrong with me," he whispered to himself. Coulah dawdled outside, rubbing his eyes, feeling silly that he let himself get like this. He lays himself down on his chair in front of the pool. It was evening out by the time the afternoon events had occurred. The stars shone their brightest light, bringing a calm feeling to Coulah. This is where he lay most nights; in most seasons. After all, his Dad did own the pool grounds. He had 24/7 access to it. Coulah basically ran the place seeing as his Dad he was so busy with his job; he didn't have time for this place, let alone himself. He laid his head against his arm, and started thinking about Elite. "I bet my father doesn't even know," he whispered to himself. "I just can't help but feel like this, especially towards Elite. He is everything I could ever hope to be with, but look at him... he's popular, good looking, and always a bit of eye-candy for the girls; or in my case, the guys." He rolled over and sighed. "You're even talking to yourself, idiot."

?

The sun barely rises before Coulah is up on his feet. Unlocking the front gate, and attending to the usual cleaning of the pool and pruning of the greenery around the pool grounds.

"Hiya, Coulah," Shouts a familiar voice.

Coulah turns to see Ruby standing right behind him. "I didn't ever hear you come up behind me!" He giggles.

"How are you feeling today?" Ruby replied with a concerned look on her face.

"I would honestly rather not talk about it, just another day today I guess."

Coulah looked back at Ruby; a look of not being very convinced crossed her face. "I'll be fine, Ruby."

"No I can't say I have, well not at least since yesterday when you were doodling or whatever, sorry. I'll be back later but If I find it I'll be sure to bring it back to you," kissing Coulah on cheek before turning around heading for the gate.

"Okay thanks, Ruby."

The day passed on; the pool grounds were filling up with your typical furs catching some sun and getting their fur wet. Coulah laid down on his chair under the shade by the pool, still in no luck of finding his notebook.

"Where could I have put it?" He wondered to himself. He had been hoping that no one had been reading it and looking at his doodles. It was private and a keepsake, filled with thoughts and drawings of things he liked and enjoyed. Pages of which were filled with doodles of Elite which caused Coulah to blush with embarrassment.

Not having much to do, Coulah just watched on as the pool grounds filled up. Coulah couldn't help but notice that Elite wasn't there today. He usually was and this unsettled Coulah after the incident that occurred the day before. Coulah didn't know how the scenario had unfolded and wasn't sure why but he was concerned and worried.

Coulah notices Ruby walk into the pool grounds and jumps up to greet her.

"Hiya, Coulah," She greeted him. "Sorry but I couldn't find your notebook."

"Oh, that's okay! You happen to see Elite around today by any chance. I'm just worried about him that is all."

"No, I can't say I have seen him either," she replied apologetically.

"That is fine, don't worry about it!"

Coulah had a gut-wrenching feeling that was weighing down on him heavily. His true feelings for Elite were shining through even more after the moments he briefly had with Elite the day before.

"You okay, Coulah?" Ruby asked with concern.

Coulah nods slightly, feeling ashamed he could be acting like this. For all Coulah knew; Elite wanted nothing to do with him, that he just had no choice under the circumstances that had taken place. He heads toward his chair under the shade to take a breather; trying to focus his mind on other events.

The day passed on into the afternoon. The pool grounds still filled with fun and laughter and still with no sign of Elite, the thought didn't get any easier. But he kept himself distracted, attending to more typical chores around the pool grounds.

The sun was setting lighting up the sky with orange and pink. The temperature was cooling down; and many furs would be leaving to be home for dinner. There was still no sign of Elite which left a frown upon Coulah's face. He tried his hardest to be positive and not let it get to him.

"Coulah, don't beat yourself up over yesterday," Ruby reassured him as she sat down next to him.

Coulah stares at his feet, trying to hide his face of despair. "Is it... Is it because he may have known I was gay, I mean it is something I kept hidden from everyone. Did he think I had a crush on him or did he happen to see me checking him out?" Ruby moves closer, wiping the tears rolling down his cheek.

"Why can't I be, happy, or accepted for who I am. The only reason I am acknowledged around here is because my Father owns the pool grounds and..."

Ruby cuts him off mid-sentence. Hugging him and whispering by his ear, "Everything will be okay, though there may be days where you feel there is no hope, there will always be someone who cares."

She looks at him sincerely, "If people can't appreciate who you are for you, then they are not worth the pain you hold close to you, Coulah."

Coulah buries his face in his knees and lets the tears flow. Ruby stands up, rubs his head and before she slips away, Coulah whispers, "Thank you, Ruby."

The pool grounds were empty now and the evening stars shining bright. This brought a calm feeling to Coulah and he lays back and closes his eyes momentarily.

Coulah had awaken, realizing he much have dozed off. No longer than half an hour. He noticed a book to his left on the chair he was laying. Without hesitation he grabbed it with a sigh of relief. It was his special notebook, but it wasn't the same. Someone else had been through it, page after page of his thoughts and feelings; those which contained Elite in them and doodles of the wolf would have been read.

He was about to close the book when he noticed that wasn't all to be discovered in it. There was a page at the end filled with lines of words, but ones he didn't write.

He read the lines carefully._ _

Dear Coulah I'd like to start off by saying that I love your artwork and your thoughts and feelings that I came across in your notebook. It made me feel complete and warm inside. I want to thank you for your kindness yesterday and sticking up for me, in all honesty; I didn't deserve it, but I really do appreciate it. You deserve to know this and I wouldn't be happier telling anyone else but I am gay. I have known for a while, even throughout my relationship with Thunder's Sister. He didn't appreciate his sister being 'led on'; he being slightly homophobic was a factor to. But, I had no reason to fight back.

You are probably wondering why you. Well, it has always been you. You don't care about popularity and you have a heart of gold. Someone that makes me feel warm inside and one that makes me feel normal. It is just a bonus that you are really attractive, plus, you have a cute butt. However, I do want to apologise for taking your notebook. It was left on the chair where you were sitting by the pool and you had left a page open which intrigued me. So I had to find out more, and I am forever grateful that I did. I know the notebook must mean a lot to you. But, just a simple written apology wouldn't really do so I'd rather it face-to-face that is if, you don't mind. Sincerely Elite

Coulah's eyes watered up slightly, his cheeks a rose red. He was speechless. He noticed slight movement in the corner of his eye, being completely unaware that someone was sitting there.

"Uh, well from what I can see, you are not mad with me... I hope?" Elite grinned, letting out a small laugh.

Coulah couldn't help but adore his smile, although Elite had caught him off guard. He was lost for words as he wiped the tears from his eyes.

Elite stood up from his chair, leant over, his golden eyes locking in with Coulah's. Coulah blushed and couldn't help but smile, his body feeling warm as a happy feeling set over him. Unaware of what was to happen next, Elite blushed, before he leant in and kissed him.
