Part 1: It Begins

Date: 1-1-3410

Time: 0700

Today was the beginning of another year, but for the new recruits in front of me. It was sure to be the beginning of heaven and hell for them.

Most of the recruits were young men and women at about 18-21 years of age. A pretty average age for those that were chosen to join our ranks. But as I look to the front rows near the platform I see those that are young.

Too young.

As I scanned the row I spotted a young squirrel girl. She seemed so scared and frightened as she hugged her tail and a small plush toy for comfort. She seemed no more than 9 years of age and yet here she was. Standing in formation with a number of other frightened children ranging anywhere from 10 years old up to 15. This young squirrel was obviously the youngest.

I looked to my wife on the other side of the platform. She seemed to have noticed the young squirrel as she returned my look of worry with one of assurance. I looked back to the Squirrel who was now looking to me in fear. She seemed to have had a new fear running through her mind. Most likely from having noticed my look to my wife.

Now granted I was an intimidating figure when in my dress uniform. I mean after all I am a 6 feet plus tall dragon. Not to mention my wingspan being pretty impressive even when folded as they were now. But not wanting to scare her anymore and possibly causing a premature heart attack I smiled warmly to her which seemed to have calm her a little. I definitely made a mental note to talk with her later.

Soon the High Commander stepped forward from the doors that my wife and I flanked. And upon reaching the podium my wife and I gave the command aloud and all officers were standing erect with a salute.

"At ease" the old badger said after having made his salute in return. As all the officers settled into an easier stance the badger began, "Welcome those of you who are here now about to join our ranks."

"This facility will be your home for the next year and maybe more as you all will undergo various trainings for combat, espionage, assassination, and much more. I wish you all the best of luck as the training will be rigorous and strenuous. There will be dangers in your excercises, but remember that your teammates are there to help you. For we all are strong alone. But nothing is as strong as the team that lives their lives together. Sharing each others pains and sorrows. From here on out. Your families now include those that stand among side you on the front lines. Not just those that you protect back home. That is all. Dismissed!"

Again my wife and I gave the command to salute as the old badger turned and left the stage. As the doors closed we too took our leave from the stage and headed to the HH ready room.

As we entered the room we looked around at the old familiar settings. You see, back when I first met my wife we too were young kid recruits like those that I had seen earlier. I remember feeling a little frightened as I had stood there hearing the same speech. But then again I wasn't as scared as this cute little wolf girl was next to me. She was scared to the point of having cried some until I had stopped to comfort her. She was cute then I'll admit. But as I look at her now. Nothing can describe her beauty other than thinking of the best paradise you can imagine in the form of a person. But then again she's my wife so what can I say?

My lovely wife... Man, I never get tired of saying that.

Sera is such a lovely white wolf with the most beautiful ice blue eyes I had ever seen. And even though she was tall for her background and all, she was limber enough to pull off a few gymnastic tricks most olympians would kill for! But aside from all that, she was also the best friend you could ever have. She was always like a mother figure to any "fledgling" that was sent our way. But she would argue that I was always the better father. My only response to that was that of I'd be a better father figure. After all, I am a guy! And that earn my smart ass a kiss with a hefty pillow. I got to remember to think more often.

But as I stood there thinking about all this I hadn't noticed that she was sorting through a few files on the desk we shared in the ready room. I walked over to see what it was that held her interest as she picked up one particular file.

"Who's file is that? The cute squirrel girl?" I asked her as I looked through the others left behind.

"Yep, and it seems that she is a special case. While she is to be put through training, she must be left with us." Sera mused softly.

"Huh? You mean we're babysitting her?" I asked somewhat shocked as this is a very rare case. My wife looked to me and nodded as she held the file out for me to see.

I took the file and began scanning it for her info as well as background history.

Turned out her name was Rose. She was just barely 10 and yet was found as an orphan by a fellow agent. I looked to find that the agent that had found her was an old friend that Sera and I had trained alongside back when we began. His name was Tim and he was the one who had given her that little plush toy. Reading further into the file there was a note mentioning that there was more info on her in that plushie. But only either my wife or myself could get it. Knowing Tim it was probably a small chip or disk that held the info with so many codes and things that would drive anyone else mad!

But that would have to wait as I heard the door open to let in the new fledglings. As they filed in and took a seat I noticed that our squad was quite interesting this time around.

The first to enter was a young male tiger. He seemed to be about 11 at the most, but as I watched him I knew there was more to him in the way of knowledge and maturity. After him came a cute bunny girl who seemed about the same age. I must admit to call her lively was a bit of an understatement as she was snapping her head so quickly to see everything. I swear I practically got whiplash from watching her!

The next to follow was a little fox girl who somehow seemed to remain cheerful as the others showed some signs of fear or uncertainty. And while there were those who could act pretty well, between me and my wife the act would not matter. Next was a slim mare who seemed to be more frightened than those that were there so far. And finally was the little squirrel. She was so cute as she peaked around the door corner before slowly shuffling her way to a nearby chair.

I look to my wife who was standing behind the desk as I sat on the front edge. I nodded to her to begin before moving to a side chair.

"Welcome to the HH Ready Room. This is where you will gather for briefings on your assignments and excercises. My name is Commander Sera Lancer. I am in charge of the "Holy Knights". The young ladies in this room will be under my command from here on out. And not just through training. To my right is Commander Bill Lancer. He is in charge of the Demon Warriors. The boys in this room are at his mercy." she explained in as much of an authoritative voice as she could manage while trying not to laugh at the last comment and my antics.

As I was introduced I gave a small and somewhat comical little "hello" wave. But as soon as Sera had mentioned the boys being under my command I gave a mischieviously sadistic grin that made them go wide-eyed with fear.

"Now with that out of the way. My husband and I would like to be the first to congratulate you young fledglings for being selected to join the Heaven and Hell Division. If you haven't noticed yet the names used in our division are played up to that same spiel like you wouldn't believe." she continued now sounding more informal.

Sera then sat back into the chair behind the desk followed by putting her feet on the table and leaning back to file her nails. I stood up to my full height began my part of the intro.

"Alright, now before you ask. We in this division are just the same as the other Spectres. We just prefer to relax more." I explained with a smile as I began trying to unbutton my unform blouse.

"Now while we may like to relax. That does not mean we aren't serious. If we are hard on you during training at any point. That is because we want you to succeed so you don't get shot out in the field. Those that are assigned to the HH Division wear a cross pendant such as what my wife and I wear. However, while you are given these "marks" as they are called. You will not be a qualified agent until after having completed the minimum requirements for training. The first 6 months from here are just basics. But the next 6 are your advanced training. In those last 6 months you will learn the tricks and tactics of a true HH agent." I explained with a stern attitude.

"Boy I hate these long winded explainations......." I sighed as I turned to sit and let my wife continue.

"So do I hun." the white wolf said trying to sound sympathetic. "Now as I have mentioned before, I command the Holy Knights. This part of the HH Division is made of every female HH agent. The Demon Warriors led by my husband are the guys. Simple right? Now, throughout training you will be called upon to help each other. You will need to be there for each other like a family would. However, a word of warning. If any of you should happen to get into an arguement or fight with another agent be sure to run. Forget pride and whatnot. Until you finish your training just run to find either of us." my wife said as only a mother could.

"If you are unable to find either of us. Then look for any agent with the HH mark. They will help you. If they ask for verification just tell them that you are with Aries and Luna. That should solve most of that for you." I put in as I leaned forward a little in my chair.

"Now before we move on to begin the registration and such. Are there any questions? Even if it's about either of us." my wife asked looking around from wall to wall.

"Hon, there's only this little group in front of you. No need for the looking around." I said in a tired way. Her reply was her tongue sticking at me which resulted in a few laughs.

As I looked up from rubbing the tiredness from my eyes I saw a small hand in the back being raised. It was the little squirrel girl and for the first time since the initial orientation she had a small smile.

"Yes, sweetheart?" I asked looking to her.

"Why are you called the Heaven and Hell Division? You guys are funny." she said with a little laugh.

Upon hearing that sweet voice and that laugh that seemed to match a crystal chime in the wind my heart melted. I mentally swore to protected her as best I could along with the others in the room as they nodded agreement to the question.

"Well sweety, the reason is pretty simple. Although it isn't something we talk about that often." my wife began trying to sugarcoat it.

I looked to her with a firm look which resulted in her ears flattening sadly.

"Honey, you know we need to tell them about this. Even if they didn't ask." I said softly with a firmness.

"I know. I just don't like the demon part of the reasoning." she whined.

As I sighed I turned back to the fledglings who all now had a questioning look with a trace of fear.

"The reason we are called that is because that when you become a fully qualified agent. You will be given abilities that will help you in the field. I will explain more a little later. For now we must get you guys into the system." With that I gathered them together and led them to another room similar to that of a hospital. My wife slowly lagging as she dreaded having to see the fledglings face the truth behind the demons of our unit.

"Dr. Ganna! We got some fledglings for you to process!" I call out in a harsher tone than I meant to. A small squeak followed by a couple things falling to the floor could be heard as the kangaroo rat scurried forward.

"Sorry about that!" she said in her small but everlastingly cheerful way.

"Sometimes I have no clue how you manage all this energy and cheerfulness. I swear the day you become sad or depressed the world will end as hell freezes over!" I said trying to sound somewhat miffed even though you could never stay that way with her around.

"Yeah, yeah, you always say that. Now where are the young ones?" she said acting her normally sassy way when she wasn't busy being cheerful. She walked around me as I thumbed behind me and as soon as she saw them she began with all the same tones of "oohs" and "aaaws" that one would give to puppies in a shop window. The loudest "AAAAW" of course was when she saw Rose.

And so after all the intros and commenting was made the good doctor began the basic physicals of the fledglings through a combination of the old testings and also hooking them up to machines to take more in-depth readings.

I could never understand much in the way of the technical language that Dr. Ganna used when doing these physicals and such. But it seemed that the little mare and tiger could understand better than either me or my wife could together! We could tell that this little group was gonna be different than those we've trained before.

And finally after the long exams on the others were complete it was finally little Rose's turn. Of course having read the notes about her having some interesting abilities and such made us watch closer than the others. I mean after all she seemed to be a normal little girl who had been rescued as an orphan and sent here for safety at most. But as the examination began we knew there was something different right away.

Dr. Ganna had just finished setting up the nodes to record the little squirrel's heart rate as well as other things. But as we watched the monitor with her just laying still and relaxing there were spikes in her brain waves that were not usual shown in fledglings, let alone one so young.

"What's the matter? What's on there that you 2 are so interested in? You didn't pull up any of my personal files did you?" Dr. Ganna said as she saw our faces with shock as we watched the wave lines being displayed.

As the little roo rat came to look at the screen expecting to see the normal waves and such her face went white as her eyes practically popped out like you see in a cartoon.

"This is..... Incredible! Never have I seen one so young with mental abilities as highly perceptive as this!" she managed to whisper loud enough for my wife and I to hear.

"It seems that we need that info from what is in her little friend to learn more." I said looking to my wife with amazement. My wife who was one that you could try to scare with a fake spider and she'd ignore it like it wasn't there had a similar look as what the doctor wore.

"Oooookay.... If you are both that shocked then this is obviously more important than I thought." I said in a soft voice of concern. I looked up through the window seeing the little girl lying there with her eyes closed. She looked as if she had peacefully fallen asleep. But I looked on in amazement at how this little girl could be so perceptive and yet so innocent.

"Commander." squeaked the little roo rat seated at her chair as she looked to me. "There was only 2 others I recall that were that unique."

"Oh yeah? Who are they and where are they?" I asked quietly watching the girl for a better understanding.

"They were a young couple. A boy and a girl. They went through training and became the best agents the Orginization had ever seen. And they had also become my 2 best friends." she whispered as she placed her hand on my arm and a hand on my wife's.

"So you mean she's like us?" my wife asked having to cover her eyes as she tried to think. "But how? There haven't been others like us for a millenia!"

"Actually....." I started to say before thinking back in time to my travels and few final missions before my current placement.

"Bill? You know something?" the doctor asked in amazement.

"Sera, Janus, meet me in the HH ready room after you get through with her exam. The fledglings can be sent to their bunks for now. We'll continue after we have a talk." I explained quickly before turning to leave the room.

My wife looked to me and was about to say something as I quickly rounded the corner and walked down the hall. I knew something about this girl. That much is true. But I couldn't be sure until after I had contacted a few friends. By the time I would finish that the High Commander would surely have noticed my actions. Which would actually be a good thing for me. It would eliminate the need to try and track him down for this little briefing.

But I had a thought that continued to bug me as I walked to the Comms room.

How could he have found it?
