#7 of Grand Duel Academy

Hey all! WHEW it has been a while since my last chapter was uploaded. But I finally gave in and gave up on the entire tag duel idea. It was a bit too annoying, so I decided to make a more romantic ending. So, that means no duels, but I did put a small Duel Puzzle section in the middle, so it's not just plot. Either way, next chapter, be prepared for all the duel action you can handle!

A new day rises on the Grand Island, the location of the Grand Duel Academy. The students here are learning to become the best duelists they can be. We head to the Photon Purple dormitories, one room in particular. A Lopunny male was in there, looking through his closet, trying to pick out something. His roommate, a Gallade, was laying on his own bed, working on improving his deck.

Rose: Uuuugh, I have no idea what to wear.... Hudson: Rose, dude. It's just a date. Rose: Just a date?! Hudson, I had to endure getting smacked by a candy and cake queen over and over to get to this point. And it's with the girl of my dreams! Hudson: Yeah, a little Zorua girl.

Rose: SHUT UP!

He huffs, going back to looking through his clothing options. Eventually he settles on a white polo shirt and black jeans, as well as his nicer pair of running shoes. He smiles, grabbing his backpack, disk stored away. His roommate smiles, gathering up his cards before throwing his own backpack on.

Rose: Ready to go? Hudson: Definitely.

The two of them leave their room, rushing over to the school's airstrip. There was the school's airship there, fueled up for a long flight. Today was the school's monthly ditch day, where there were no classes, and the students who were holding their grades well were allowed to go to Poketopia, the city where many of them grew up and lived in. Rose and Hudson got to the airstrip, Hudson going off to find his friends, Rose looking for the one girl he was looking for. However, she was nowhere to be seen. Rose was getting a bit nervous. He knew Shimmer was a really good student, though she may not seem like so since she never seemed to take notes. But from what he was seeing in the grades posted, she was the top of the class. He sighs, thinking she may have forgotten about their agreement. However, he yelped as something suddenly pinched his butt. He turned around, sighing in relief as he saw who it was.

Rose: Damn it, Shimmer, you scared the crap out of me! Shimmer: Sorry, couldn't resist.

The 12-year old Zorua was there, wearing her normal clothes of a black hoodie and sweatpants with shoes.

Rose: Kinda dull for a date....

Shimmer; It's what I like, don't judge.

Rose: I never said I didn't like it...its kinda cute.

Shimmer flinches, blushing a bit and rushing on. Instead of going to her level though, being a Galaxy Gold, she went with Rose to his level.

Rose: Huh? Are you sure, the things on the Gold level are way better than down here. Shimmer: I really don't mind, I didn't even use any of them during the flight to here.

Rose smiled, as he and Shimmer took their seats, the plane taking off soon after. After a few hours, they landed at the Grand Duel Academy Testing Center in Poketopia, the students rushing off to enjoy the city. Rose smiled, as he and Shimmer left together.

Rose: So, anywhere in particular you wanted to go? Shimmer: Not really. We have all day, I'm really up for anything.

Rose: Well, let's go and get something to eat first, I'm starving.

Shimmer chuckles, smiling as they go to a nearby coffee shop. Rose gets a bagel and a mocha, while Shimmer goes for just some tea. They take their seats, Rose smiling.

Rose: So, how are your classes going?

Shimmer: Eh, bearable, I suppose...pretty boring to be honest. Rose: I'm struggling a bit in History...so many names, dates, places...they just get jumbled up in my head.

Shimmer: I can help you later on when we go back. Rose: I'd like that. So....what was your life like before you came to GDA? Shimmer: What do you mean? Rose: Well...what were your parents like? Your life before you became a student here.

Shimmer sighs, putting down her cup.

Shimmer: It's...not the best story ever...long really.

Rose: We do have all day...and I'm willing to listen.

Shimmer: Well...my past might sound a bit like a cliché but...I never really had a father, we left before I was old enough to remember. All I know is he was a fire type, likely an Arcanine; but my mother would never tell me. Anyway, I lived with my mother for a few years, we managed on a small pay check, until she passed away. I spent three long years bouncing from house to house, never really fitting in with a family, always kicked back out. I stopped caring what other thought of me, and spent this last year just living off my own work on the streets for the entrance fee, and came here to try for a better life.

Rose didn't expect to hear that, looking away a bit.

Shimmer: Sorry if I ruined today... Rose: Huh? No, nonono! Its fine....I just didn't really expect that....I'm sorry for your life before this... Shimmer: It's in the past now, I'm trying to forget it....

Rose: Well, now that you're at the academy, I'm sure it'll all work out. Shimmer: I sure hope so....what about your family? Rose: Well, my parents weren't the most successful. Our family owned a small card shop in the boonies of the city. We never had much business, most of the people there not really into Duel Monsters. We barely made enough to survive, and once I was old enough, my parents used all of the savings they had left to get me a place. I got a job working as a Duel Disk repairman, since I was already pretty adept at it. I actually modified the Kaiba Corp disk I use today when I was about 8 to work with the new systems. I was able to save enough money to take the entrance exam, and now here I am.

Shimmer: Seems both of us haven't had the easiest of lives....

Rose: Yeah...well, what about your deck choice? Usually that can tell a lot about someone.

Shimmer: It's pretty simple for me actually. My decks were my mothers. She used the Evilswarms when she dueled, and kept the Madolches because they would always make her smile, even when she was on her deathbed....what about you? Rose: Well, being out in the hood, I didn't really have much. I couldn't use any of the cards that my parents had to sell, we couldn't afford to. So I had to scrounge around looking for cards to make my deck. I was about...5, I suppose, when I found it...my first card.

Rose opened his deck box, taking out the Ojama King, wrinkled, torn, crumpled, and looking in bad shape.

Shimmer: He's been through a lot... Rose: Yeah, I found him stuck in a street drain. I grabbed him just before he slipped into it when the wind stopped. I took it as a sign to roll with it, and collected the cards to make my first deck, my Ojamas. As for the Dark Magicians....well, they came for our duel together, I made them overnight when we were going to have our challenge. It was a deck I had been dreaming of having for years. I've had a soft spot for Dark Magician, being my favorite monster of all time. I just had to make a deck that worked for it, and I finally was able to make it. Shimmer: Well, I'm glad you were able to make them.

The two of them finished their breakfast, deciding to go to the city's massive card shop. The inside was packed with pokemorphs of all ages, buying, selling, trading, and playing cards. The first floor was a massive dueling area, the second and third floors reserved for the shop. Rose smiled, as he went upstairs.

Rose: To be honest, I actually never went into this shop before....I never felt the need to update my Ojama deck. Shimmer: Not really easy to have cards that work well with it.

Rose: True.

He smiles as they get to the store section, looking around the place. There were cards being sold everywhere, but there was a machine set up in the back area, it seems that it was a Duel Puzzle arcade machine, where field setups were given, and one had to use the cards provided to win in a single turn.

Rose: Aww, I LOVED doing these! Shimmer: Could be fun, I guess.

Rose smiles, as it seems that it didn't have a line. He sat down at it, putting the 100 Poke in, smiling as it started up. Rose cracked his knuckles, as the first puzzle of the game revealed itself. The setup was as follows: Rose had 300 Life Points, while the opponent started with 24800. The opponent had two Continuous Trap Cards on the field: Gravity Bind and Curse of Darkness. Rose's field had four cards: General of the Ice Barrier, as well as three facedown cards: Aegis of Gaia, Soul of the Pure, and Miracle Synchro Fusion. His hand contained five cards: Gale Dogra, Pot of Benevolence, Instant Fusion, Burial from a Different Dimension, and Emergency Teleport. He had Scrap Golem, Scrap Dog and Synchro Magnet banished, as well as Psychic Commander, Scrap Beast, and Flare Resonator in his deck. His extra deck contained Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste, Shooting Star Dragon, Scrap Dragon, and Flower Wolf.

Shimmer: Not exactly fair...

Rose: It just takes a big fat combo to finish. Let's do this! I start off by activating Aegis of Gaia, gaining 3000 Life Points!

The trap activated, a warming light washing over Rose's avatar on-screen, giving him the boost.

Rose: I follow that up by summoning Gale Dogra, and activating his effect. By paying 3000 Life Points, I can send a monster in my Extra Deck to the graveyard. And I select Shooting Star Dragon.

The little insect appears, then fires out a web from its tail, grabbing the dragon from Rose's Extra Deck and sending it away.

Shimmer: What was the point of all that? Rose: I did that to activate Miracle Synchro Fusion! I now banish the General from my field and the Shooting Star Dragon from my Graveyard to fusion summon Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste!

The two monsters appear, swirling into the vortex, the large dragon warrior appearing.

Shimmer: But now Curse of Darkness will kill you for using a spell.

Rose: Thankfully I have the effect of Draco-Equiste. If I were to take effect damage at any time, the damage is reflected right back to my opponent!

The trap card glows, attempting to hurt Rose's avatar, but Draco-Equiste absorbs it, firing it back to the computer opponent and dealing the 1000 damage, bringing it to 23800.

Shimmer: Still a long way to go...

Rose; I'm nowhere near finished. Since I can now use spells at will, I can activate Burial From a Different Dimension, returning the two tuners and Shooting Star to my graveyard, dealing another 1000 damage to the opponent.

The odd coffin appears next to Rose, the three cards flying out and returning to the graveyard, the computer taking more damage.

Rose: Now I use Pot of Benevolence, returning my tuners to my deck. I follow that up by activating Draco-Equiste's effect! By banishing a Dragon-type Synchro monster from my graveyard, I can copy its effect until the end phase.

The cards return, Draco-Equiste firing for every spell, as well as absorbing Shooting Star Dragon's energy.

Rose: I use Shooting Star's effect, checking the top five cards of my deck. And for every Tuner monster, it can attack that many times per turn. And would you look at that? Five tuners, five attacks! I use Soul of the Pure to give myself 800 Life points, then use Emergency Teleport and Instant Fusion, summoning Psychic Commander and Flower Wolf to the field.

The fairy gives Rose 800 life Points, getting him to 1100, then back down to 100 for Instant Fusion's effect. The monsters appear, as 3000 more damage hits the computer, lowering it to 17800.

Rose: I tune Psychic Commander and Flower Wolf together, to Synchro summon Scrap Dragon!

The UFO-riding man transforms into the three green rings, Flower Wolf jumping into them, turning into stars as the mechanized beast appears.

Rose: I use Scrap Dragons' effect, destroying Gale Dogra and Gravity Bind!

Scrap Dagon absorbs Gale Dogra into it, firing a blast, making the trap on the opponent's side of the field explode.

Rose: I now attack with everything, Draco-Equiste attacking five times to win!

The monsters attack together, Draco-Equiste becoming five rainbow-colored copies, the opponent's Life Points dropping to 0 instantly. The machine acknowledges the victory, Rose smiling as he gets a free card from it, smiling big at it.

Rose: Aw sweet, Wiretap!

Shimmer: Nice.

Rose smiled, as the machine asked him if he wished to try for another card, but he'd only get one chance instead of three.

Rose: We have time, let's do this.

Rose clicks yes, as the new harder puzzle appears. The setup was fairly similar in nature. Rose had a mere 100 Life Points, while his opponent had 20000. The opponent's field was empty, and he had a single card in his hand, Honest. Rose's field was full of cards, as well as his hand. On the field, Rose had five spell and trap cards. Activated was the spell Dark Door. Face-down, he had Nightmare Archfiends, Limit Impulse, Enemy Controller, and Escape From the Dark Dimension. In his hand, he had Dandylion, Spell Striker, Leeching the Light, Allure of Darkness, Ally of Justice Core Destroyer, and Scroll of Bewitchment. And finally, in his deck, he had Lava Golem and Gravi-Crush Dragon. Rose bit his lip, this wasn't easy, and he was on a timer. However Shimmer just smirked.

Shimmer: Move. Rose: Huh? Shimmer: This is too easy.

Rose shrugged, swapping with Shimmer. She took her seat, cracking her knuckles and her neck, smiling.

Shimmer: The first thing to do is activate Limit Impulse, discarding Dandylion and Core Destroyer, summoning the tokens in attack position.

Her avatar on-screen did the action, the two spirit-looking tokens appearing.

Shimmer: And since Dandylion was sent to the graveyard, I can summon two Fluff Tokens in defense mode.

The two puff seeds appear on field, one happy, one angry.

Shimmer: Now I activate Nightmare Archfiends, attributing a Fluff Token to summon three Nightmare Archfiend Tokens to my opponent's side of the field.

The token poofs away, as the three demons appear on the opponent's side in attack mode, 2000 ATK each.

Rose: Those things are pretty powerful....

Shimmer: They're nothing but cannon fodder. I now use Allure of Darkness, drawing Lava Golem and Gravi-Crush Dragon, banishing the latter. Then I tribute two of the Nightmare Archfiend tokens, special summoning Lava Golem to the opponent's side of the field in attack mode.

The two tokens are grabbed by massive arms, the lava beast appearing on the opponent's side.

Shimmer: I now use Enemy Controller, tributing the second Fluff Token to take control of the last Nightmare Archfiend.

The puff poofs away, the large controller appearing and connecting to the demon, the commands Left-Right-A-B being entered as the monster switches sides.

Shimmer: Now I use Escape From the Dark Dimension, special summoning Gravi-Crush Dragon to the field.

The portal appears on the ground, the dragon reappearing.

Rose: None of them are strong enough to defeat Lava Golem though... Shimmer: Just a bit more, Rosie. I use Scroll of Bewitchment, equipping it to Lava Golem, turning it into a LIGHT-attribute monster. I then banish Allure of Darkness from the graveyard to special summon Spell Striker

The scroll wraps around Lava Golem, as it starts to glow a bright yellow. The young warrior appears, wielding his giant hammer.

Shimmer: Time for the big finish. I now activate Leeching the Light! When my opponent controls a LIGHT-attribute monster, I can target it, then increase the attack of all my monster's by that monster's attack. I target Lava Golem, raising the attack of all my monsters by 3000 points each!

The light flows from Lava Golem into her monsters, as they grow in size, attack points going through the roof.

Rose: Amazing... Shimmer: And for the final move, I use Gravi-Crush Dragon's effect. I send The Dark Door to the graveyard, destroying Lava Golem.

Gravi-Crush Dragon absorbs the spell, as Lava Golem is crushed smaller and smaller until it doesn't exist.

Shimmer; Everyone...ATTACK!

All five monsters crush the opponent, the machine admitting defeat.

Rose: That...that was amazing!

Shimmer just shrugged, taking the card that popped out, putting it into her deck box.

Rose: Aren't you gonna see what it is? Shimmer: Later, maybe.

Rose sighs and smiles, as they do a little shopping. Rose gets a few new packs of cards, Shimmer preferring to just watch. The two of them enjoy the day, eventually the sun's going down, the plane back would leave at 10 that night, and it was already about 8.

Rose: We should probably start heading back.... Shimmer: Alright.

Rose and Shimmer had spent a while at an arcade, heading out and going back. However, as they did, Rose saw a shop he wanted to go before he left.

Rose: Hey, Shim? Mind if we stop here?

She looks over, it was a specialty shop meant for duelist couples.

Shimmer: Sure, we have some time before the ship leaves.

Rose smiles as they go in. There were all sorts of things around the shop for couples, ranging from matching duel disks, card sleeves, and gear. However, something caught Rose's eyes. At the front, they were selling some card necklaces. They were frames with the card back on both sides. Inside, one could put two pictures, or they can be made to hold a card that represents their relationship.

Rose: ....I want to have us wear these. Shimmer: Hm....sure, why not? Rose: So, one picture probably....what will the card be?

Rose and Shimmer look through the card lists, it was a massive list of options. Eventually, Rose smiled.

Rose: I got it....we'll have the same card.

Rose smiles, taking out a pair of the Equip Spell card, United We Stand.

Shimmer: That card? Rose: Yeah....Shimmer, I'd do anything for you if you ever needed it. I'll always be here for you, I swear, I'll never do anything that could hurt you. I love you.

Shimmer chuckles, smiling.

Shimmer: Same here, hun....to be honest, there aren't many I can really say I truly love....and you're one of them.

Rose smiles, kissing Shimmer on the cheek, the latter blushing lightly. They get their pictures taken for the other sides of the lockets, and then have them made for them quickly. Rose helps Shimmer put hers on before getting his own. He smiles, as they head back. Hudson catches up with them on the ship, smiling.

Hudson: Hey you guys. Had a good date? Rose: Definitely. Shimmer: It was fun, I guess.

Rose giggles, Hudson laughing. The three of them relaxed on the plane back. They got back around 10 PM, going right to sleep. In a few days, it would be the biggest school event of the year, and they wanted to be fully ready for it. The School Duel Tournament was beginning soon, and they'll be sure to be ready to give it their all.
