The Beginning

Story by Wolf Silvermane on SoFurry

its the beginning of the book i'm trying to write!

Stalking its prey the wolf padded silently towards the young doe with a dangerous glint in its golden eyes. It would eat well tonight and possibly tomorrow once it had its prey lifeless between its powerful jaws. Darting forwards with a snarl of bloodlust it pounced as its maw opened to reveal the wickedly sharp canines set in its scarlet gums.

And missed.

The doe, startled by something the blood maddened wolf couldn't feel, it had bolted before the spring and escaped the unknowing fate of becoming a meal. With a distasteful snarl the lupine turned to exit the thick oak trees, but its hackles rose as the floor began to smoke. Yelping while it tried to stay off the floor it didn't notice the cracking sound emanating from deep within the ground before it was too late.

A colossal boom was heard, shredding the silent night with the explosive noise, startling many of the forest animals as their habitat was breached by the unearthly force. Heralded by intense heat and the ghastly, ghostly flicker and flare of black flames, the earth was torn asunder and liquefied under the intense heat and pressure coming from the unearthly fire. Whispering and waving as if they were alive the flames began to condense, pulling together forming a rough humanoid outline that wavered and flickered with an unstable glare of fluxing power. A near hurricane force wind swept through the forest and scattered dying leaves and the flaky ashes.

Atoms cooled and began to become more detailed as they bonded, biomass extrapolation from the surrounding matter such as DNA or newer elements. Flesh began to create itself with what little remained of the meagre energy the baked and scorched earth and surroundings could provide- leeched away to feed the reaction taking place. The skeletal structure crunched as flames pulled into the rough form, a blackened and charred skeleton standing with its arms out wide; gruesomely grinning. Organs began to form from the knowledge that had been stolen from the surrounding genes and DNA; heart, lungs, spine and brain all growing rapidly along with the rest of the flesh. Bunches of sinuous muscle, all tightly woven together wrapped around the bones and organs to keep them together. All of this formed under pale skin with no pigmentation, china white with no markings. Silvery strands pushed from the beings scalp to form a long sheet of metallic collared hair that reached its ankles.

It let out the first sound from its new vocal cords- an exclamation of agony- as two long appendages ripped from the bottom of its spine, twisting and writhing as prehensile muscle began to strain and test itself. Fur rippled across its tails; itching and burning as powerfully sensitive nerves grew through them. Internally, red fluid began to run through passages both large and small, feeding the form as the cluster of vascular material began to rapidly beat faster and faster until it was humming like an engine. A steely slither was heard as claws pushed from the end of the flexible digits, ripping through its flesh and setting, dripping jet black fluid. It was beyond agony now, as if the creature was being forced to re-live the end of every creature and plant that had died on its entry, heart pounding as sharp teeth gritted themselves while the being punched at the ground, cracking it. Eyes snapped open to reveal their golden colour and slit like pupils before they rolled back in his head. Pointed ears formed and provided auditory information as his hands picked up the feeling of dead earth, tongue tasting the ash in the air while his nose told him about the charred flesh of animals. It collapsed, body giving one final crack as it completed itself.

The pale, sinuous male was appeared to be nineteen with well built with slender shoulders with slightly raised shoulder blades. His attractive features were troubled as the portal he had been birthed from faded and flickered to nothing- job complete. Well-toned muscles ran along his body and lead into his extremities like the two meter long tails that flowed seamlessly from the bottom of his spine, twitching occasionally. Although nude he didn't feel cold but blazing hot, body shimmering with heat waves as the internal flames heated and kept him alive. There he stayed for hours on end until dawn broke over the burnt area and the first rays of sunlight pierced through his semi closed eyelids. Rousing from the fitful sleep he had been forced into the human/lupine male suddenly coughed hard and shuddered as black blood seeped from his lower lip. The blood evaporated in mere seconds as the male tried to stand, staggering like an infant with its first steps as he surveyed his blackened and dead surroundings. Standing in the cracked crater his entrance had created he could sense the animals and plants around him, and saw the charred bones of an animal.

Staggering over to the dead creature he could feel a strange pull towards it, as if they were... They were one and the same. As his slender hands alighted upon it he felt the link and knew this was the being that had inspired his flesh. Lifting the skeleton up the man focused and saw in his mind the atomic structure of the once proud animal. With a sharp twist of his mind he broke apart the electronic bonds of its atoms and watched it turning to dust except one gleaming white fang that sat in the dust collected on his palm before fading too. A single tear of gratitude slipped from his eye and down his cheek as he felt sorrow that it had died and the only thing he now had was its memory. Standing with a newer ease the male instinctively knew the name of his bodily origin.

Wolf.

Choosing the name in honour of the dead being and the one thing he knew so fully within his heart he set off, sprinting through the woods with his tails and hair streaming behind him. Many days and nights, the only thing he did he was run through the winding and twisting forest as he remembered the haunting crater that he had spawned from, he seemed determined to outrun his traumatic beginning and onto newer land. It was a place of death and destruction in which he had been created but he knew not how or why, only that he had killed innocent living creatures in doing so. Never tiring nor slowing he ran a steady pace and weaved through trees, jumping over entire bushes and banks before splashing down in streams that burbled and seemed to brighten slightly. His internal compass was going wild as it continue to ping and whirr as his body began to blur and warp, suddenly flickering and like a bullet from a gun, his body let off a colossal boom as he felt something break before him, like a filmy surface. He had broken the sound barrier and was hurtling towards wherever his instincts lead him, howling while he ripped through the unpolluted air.

This was several hundred years ago.

In present time, Wolf stretch his limbs as he took a breath and rolled out of the low bed that was custom made to replicate a wolf's den; something he found comforting. Looking around the dark room Wolf could see the innumerable sketches of animals and plants- drawing the fauna and flora he came across was a hobby he had picked up- as well as many strange oddities he had made or found such as the Archimedes Sphere tucked up under desk or possibly the long and thin scabbard that rested on the shelf above his pleasantly cluttered desk. His tails dragging across the floor as he yawned again, the man going to the wardrobe and pulling his favourite clothing out.

Several minutes later Wolf was dressed in his dark blue jeans that had the chains linking the belt loops together in place of an actual belt, a blood red shirt that had the immortal words "think I look bad? See what I did to the other guy" scrawled across it and his leather combat boots- naturally they had a steel plate on each sole and steel toes. Sighing with satisfaction as he took the kettle off the cheerful orange flames of the stove and poured its scalding contents into the waiting mug. Watching as his mint tea darkened to just the right shade of colour Wolf used his left tail to grab the newspaper that sat waiting to be read on his table. Mixing in a small amount of honey into his drink Wolf clicked his tongue several times as he read the headline; something about a celebrity affair.

He remembered when the news was far more important than what it currently was, but with a small shrug of defeat began to read into the paper with a detached air as he sat down on his chair, leaning back on it. His morning went by with no real events other than his post being delivered. Huffing as he looked at his clock Wolf stood up and went to the coat stand, grabbing the black leather trench coat he had for many years. Pulling it on he felt reassured by its steel mail coated inside. Making sure his tails were tucked into the black fabric he pulled the neckerchief over his mouth to conceal his fangs, using a hat hide his pointed ears and a pair of sunglasses for his eyes. Nodding as he made sure he was fully clothed Wolf exited his house and locked the door behind him.

Off to work.

It'd been many years, centuries even, when Wolf had been forced from the planet and began to run, and he hadn't really stopped to be honest. However the charming town of Meythsta had a pleasing air and grace not often seen in towns anymore, the people were friendly and helpful while the air was crisp and the surroundings beautiful. Wolf strolled down the path and took in the numerous gardens; each with their own unique layout and plants. He had to admit he certainly enjoyed the various scents and colours of roses and poppies, tulips and lilies all of which were grown here. Turning the corner of his street Wolf continued to walk for at least half an hour until he arrived at the edge of the forest and smiled, removing the garments he used to conceal his inhuman features. Rubbing the tips of his ears as his tails stretched out with a small cracking sound the man rolled his neck and took a breath.

One minute he was there and the next minute he was gone.

Or it would appear. Wolf had actually accelerated so fast he simply vanished from perceivable vision, the only thing someone would see a mere ripple like the surface of a road during a heat-wave or feel the strong breeze his motion caused. To Wolf's perception everything was moving at a fraction of its regular speed, like it was all moving through honey or thick syrup. He watched as a bird took off in slow motion and saw its wings fan out while an insect buzzed by so slow Wolf could have counted the hairs on its miniscule body if he cared too. But he was heading to the one place he felt comfortable, a place where he wouldn't be labelled a freak. Everyone who worked in the complex was similar to him, influenced by the animal kingdom in numerous ways such as tails or fangs, but no-one knew or really cared why it happened.

Darkleaf Ranger Station was situated deep in the forest so the people who practically lived in the base could keep a closer eye on the slowly repopulating deer herd that had been nearly wiped out due to over hunting. With a small crew and hidden so well it felt more like an elite club for people worthy of entry. Slowing down his pleasant little run as he saw his second home Wolf marvelled at how well the base was camouflaged. Literally built into the side of a massive hill it reminded him somewhat of the Lord of the Rings books, the Hobbits with their little dwellings and similar hobbies he himself had learnt to enjoy such as gardening or cooking, and of course his passion for books. The front of the base actually had trees densely grown around it like a natural barrier of sorts but also another method of hiding the structure and as well as this a large pond used to monitor the local fish as well as the deer or horses that came to drink. Stopping just before the door Wolf brushed his trousers off and smiled softly as he pushed open the door.

Entering the base he chuckled at the sound of well-meaning arguments along with the sound of the kettle and plates. Having missed the lunch that was usually handed out Wolf felt his stomach grumble in protest before he entered the main complex and felt his ears assaulted by the sound of Halestorm being blared out of a set of speakers. Chuckling under his breath as he saw the person responsible for such cacophonous noise. A woman- a mare to be exact- with long brown hair, a tan complexion and chocolate eyes sat toting a blade around her neck as well as a large pistol in the hip holster while she tinkered with part of an engine. She wore a green and khaki ranger's uniform, with a pair of strong walking boots that went up a little further than the ankle. Although she was stunningly beautiful- she had a figure most if not all women would kill for, with a natural, no makeup style that showed her stunning features- she had an inner fire burning within her eyes, something that always made Wolf feel a strange thrill.

Walking over to her he waited by her side as she screwed in several parts before looking up to him from her reclining chair. Her eyes glinted as she looked right back, Wolf opening his mouth to talk," good afternoon, Ceara."

Ceara Aislinn was one of the two equine influenced woman on the base- something that had come in handy many times before- and as expected her appearance reflected this in the form of her flowing mane that framed her features and the incredibly long tail that she was currently sat upon. She leaned back in her chair and smiled impishly as she turned down her music with the flick of a switch," hey there Wolf, you missed lunch."

"I know, but I had a big breakfast."

Ceara bit back a laugh," right well you're going to need the energy, Angel's prowling again." At those words Wolf swore his stomach dropped into his boots and his hand unconsciously went to his crotch. Despite her name Angel was a notorious woman both inside and outside the base, famous for having the most sex during college and even now she defended that rank by having a different date nearly every two days. Men who were lucky (or unlucky) enough to make it with her could easily say that their hips had been broken thanks to her rather uncontrollable nature. Ceara noticed the attempt to protect himself and gave an open laugh while he himself felt rather exposed out in the open.

"Well, let us hope she does not find me," Wolf said while his tails twitched as he tried not to think about what would happen. Looking down at Ceara with a fond warmth in his eye the man offered his hand to help her up; she accepted with a grateful smile. The two stayed like that, holding each other's hand in a strangely comfortable mood until a woman with ice white hair sprinted over and bear-hugged her best friend, making Wolf release Ceara's hand. Angel had a similar appearance to her friend with large eyes and a crooked grin but that was where similarities stopped dead in their tracks.

Dressed in a tight shirt that had a deliberate low cut collar to reveal the top of her cleavage and cut away jeans that were there simply to show off her legs Angel was attractive and she knew it. Tossing her stiff white bangs out of her face the woman chuckled and kissed her best friend as her boots clomped on the floor," hey there filly, up for a little game?"

Ceara chuckled and pushed her friend off of her, almost giving into the offer," sorry but I'll pass for now. Though if you give me a call in about an hour maybe we'll see." Wolf felt his emotions give an ugly twist as jealously reared its repulsive head. Squashing the emotion before his friends picked up on it the lupine gave a smile, though his teeth were gritted. Angel suddenly froze and her features changed as she turned slowly to the silver haired male.

With gleaming eyes full of something that could only be described as desire, and her hand twitching Angel leapt forward and practically hung off of Wolf," excuse me, Angel, what are you doing?"

Giving a chuckle that tapered off into a slight sigh the white haired mare pulled him closer as her large bust pressed against his chest," oh c'mon Wolfy boy, are you a virgin or something?" blinking a few times in rapid succession the pinned male looked to Ceara for a little help and wasn't disappointed. Grinning the tanned woman cracked her hand across Angel's ass, making the woman give a slight moan before looking to Ceara.

"That's mean," she pouted as Wolf took several relaxed breaths," I just wanted to play."

With a disappointed sigh Angel began to walk away, hips swinging as she turned back to her friends who sat trying to recover from the nymphomaniacs influence, "see you later Ceara, and you too Wolfy boy." Wolf pinched the bridge of his nose as he took in several deep breaths then stopped, smelling Angel's scent. Silently cursing his powerful lupine senses as he shook his head the man grumbled at the attention he had just received. Ceara laughed and soon Wolf joined in, their mirth infecting one another as Wolf's tails thrashed side to side. Giving a small sigh as they stopped Ceara looked at Wolf as he shook his metallic hair out, as it had just gotten tangled in his collar.

"Wanna go out this evening?" she asked bluntly, catching Wolf off guard and making him do several mental double takes. Peering at the slightly shorter woman the lupine found himself possibly if not certainly wanting to take her up on her offer. Ceara yawned and pretended to not really show her excitement as he nodded.

Smiling Wolf nodded once and took her hand in his, planting a kiss on her skin," of course, I would love too. Though you would have to show me where to go, I am afraid I don't know many places that are any good for dates." Bowing to her he smiled again and began to walk out of the room as if it were an ordinary occurrence. As soon as he was around the corner and out of sight the man nearly collapsed either from pure ecstasy or nerves- in his current frame of mind he couldn't really tell yet. Taking a few breaths it sank in he was going on a date with Ceara Aislinn (in his opinion the most beautiful woman he had ever met and that was a very large list thanks to his seemingly infinite lifespan) and it was something he had caught himself thinking about on more than one occasion.

Huffing as he shook his hair out and watched as his prehensile tails flexed and their tips twitched," ok, it is merely a date so think nothing of it for now and get to work," he argued with himself as he entered his own separate room, closing the door. Outside you could see the ghastly crackle of flames under the door and if you strained your sense of hearing even detect the whisper quiet portal as Wolf ripped apart the natural order and entered a realm that was not for mortal eyes.
