To Chase a Rabbit: Tragic Ending

The cicada and the turtle round the corner to drop off the box of donations for the homeless lapine, and their eyes widen at the tragic sight greeting them. Run lay in the alley in front of his rundown shed. His face to the sky, he remains almost motionless on the cold, hard pavement as he breathes and trembles slightly from head to toe.

The testudine immediately drops the crate and rushes to the rabbit's side, and the cicada pulls the cell phone from his breast pocket to call an ambulance. The barkeep tries to talk to the boy, stroking the lad's headfur in hopes of getting some kind of response from the fading adolescent. The young businessman runs into the bar to alert everyone as to what is happening. Upon returning to the scene, the insect witnesses the elder male bursting into tears, for the teen has closed his eyes and stopped breathing.

The cicada cannot let the boy leave this world so easily. He runs to the bunny's side, gets on his knees, and immediately begins administering CPR. He blows air into the unconscious lad's open muzzle and administers chest compressions with both of his hands. Five minutes pass, and the boy shows no signs of life. After ten minutes, there is still nothing; no visual or auditory movement can be detected from the teen. The insect is tired and panting, but the urgency of his actions drives him to continue.

A siren is heard in the distance. The cicada steels his resolve; if he can just keep up his efforts until emergency medical technicians arrive, the boy may yet be saved. The hemipteran musters everything he has within him as the reptile runs out into the street to flag down the ambulance. After a couple more cycles of CPR, the EMTs have rushed through the alley way and arrived at the scene.

The cow and tigress waste no time in assessing the boy's condition. His still has a faint pulse, so they decide to try the defibrillator. They undo his jacket and place the paddles on his bare, pink furred chest. "Clear!" The first jolt caused his upper body to rise slightly off of the ground. There is no sign of improvement. "Clear!" The second jolt has the same result. "Clear!" They check his pulse; it is gone.

The cicada volunteers to ride with the boy, in order to see the boy through to the morgue. As the ambulance begins to make its way back to the hospital, the insect looks out of the small windows on the vehicle's back doors and sees the turtle walk back into the bar to break the news to the patrons, who are waiting with baited breath. The hemipteran begins to notice more and more as he continues to gaze through to the outside world, with the windows acting as eyes and focusing his attention to certain happenings around the city. He sees a man being mugged on a street corner. Next, the insect witnesses a gang of thugs beating down a homeless man. Then, the sight of a drug dealer placing a small bag of narcotics into the hands of a trembling addict draws his attentions. All these things quickly fade into the background as he moves with the young, lifeless, adolescent lapine's body in the ambulance to the hospital, which just happens to be in part of town where the insect has spent his whole life.

The young business man makes sure that the bunny's body is taken care of by the staff at the hospital before calling a cab to take him back to his upscale apartment. Upon arrival, he immediately turns in. He lies in his bed, turns his head to gaze outside at the seemingly calm part of the city he is accustomed to, and begins to think to himself. It's a fact that everything he witnessed in the bad part of town also happens here, although it is not likely to be discussed...Violence, drug abuse, prostitution...they happen here just as much as they do in the bad side of town...If that is so, then how come so much blight and suffering happens to others simply because of a short, geographical distance?

The cicada sits up and takes a ledger pad out of his bedside nightstand. This can't stand. I'm only one man, but I have to at least try to do something. With a small fire ignited in his soul, he begins to draft a plan for city improvement to submit to his boss, who sent him on this short trip to the so called "bad part of town."
