To Chase a Rabbit: Happy Ending

Before the turtle placed the package in front of the bunny's shed, the insect placed his business card in the donation box. The shelled reptile cut his eyes to the cicada out of suspicion. "Oh, no Sir." The hemipteran's response is quick. "I want to help the lad. His tale has touched me so."

An uncomfortable, momentary silence passes between the two men before the testudine speaks. "I don't see any reason to not believe you, bub, but I will say this. I know your face; if you use the boy for the sole pleasure of your privileged cock, I will pull out your arm and beat you with the bloody end until your wings fall off. I'm fucking serious." The middle-aged male places the box at the door of the shed and knocks on it before dashing back around the corner with the young businessman hot on his heels.

Run, in nothing but a thin, black jacket and worn out blue jeans, opens the door just as the two men round the building and peek back from behind the corner. The rabbit gets on his knees and opens the box with a grateful smile. The bag of red, ripe apples is the first thing to be taken out and set to the side. He snuggles into the warm clothes to his exposed, pink chest before he pulls out the sodas and places them with the apples. The packs of cigarettes and the envelope of money go directly into his jacket pocket. The ring is pulled out; he takes a moment to wonder at its luster before slipping it on one of his digits. The insect's business card, which the boy slips into his denim's back pocket, is the last thing to be taken out.

All the while, the cicada's hope in this part of town begins to grow even stronger. The sight of the boy's appreciation of the meager donations has brought warmth to the young adult that he has not felt from his home part of town in quite some time. He is so caught up in the newfound glimmer of light in the darkness that he is completely caught off-guard by the bar owner's pulling him back to the corner.

The bunny looks out into the alley way, smiles, and stands to his feet. Tears flow, unhalted, from his eyes as he declares in a voice so pure and thankful, that even angels would be touched by its sound, "Thank you, whoever you are," before taking everything inside of his rundown, unkempt shed.

The turtle walks back toward the bar entrance as the hemipteran stops at the street corner to hail a cab. As the yellow vehicle pulls up to the insect, the old reptile pats the younger male's shoulder. "Remember: Leg, bloody end, wings falling off," he says in a serious voice before turning around and entering his tavern. The cicada gets into the cab and goes back to his own part of the city.

The next day the insect receives a call on his cell phone from the rabbit. The business man drives to the less reputable part of town later that afternoon to meet Run. The bunny, expecting the insect to be a new client, starts to strip as soon as he gets into the vehicle. The cicada quickly stops the boy's action and offers him the chance to stay with the CEO of the company he works for. The bunny accepts, still anticipating this is just another client who wants his body. They head quickly back to the company to meet up with the boy's benefactor. The greying fox from the bar, this time in his usual three piece business attire and smiing at the sight of the silver ring on the boy's finger, greets the lapine and the hemipteran as they enter his office. From that moment on, the rabbit's life has never been better. Under the fox's care, Run is now attending adult education classes in preparation for college. He has decided to devote his life to helping the homeless by becoming a social worker and working with the company's community outreach, which the cicada volunteers his spare time to overseeing.

On the weekends, all three visit the bar where it all began, and the turtle couldn't be happier to see the boy happy.
