To catch a mockingbird

I sat down the other day and felt creative. I've never written stories like this before and this is also my first upload to YiffStar. Comments and suggestions would be nice unless you don't have anything constructive to say. I've been toying with the idea of writing more and expanding on the start to include a lot more detail. Currently trying to practise with a single character before I move onto multiple character control. Let me know what you think!

The shivering rabbit peered around the dark entrance to the cave before him and sniffed the air.

'I can't smell a gryphon but then again I can't smell anything. Stupid nose. Rabbits were certainly not built for a climb such as this.' the rabbit thought while checking the contents of a small wicker basket tucked under his arm.

The rabbit slowly moved into the vast cavern avoiding loose rocks in an attempt to enter silently. Making any sound might alert anyone, or thing, inside and it was possible if it were the abode of a gryphon that he might not be off dancing in the sky or being bathed in the light of that bright summers day. Once the passage way began to widen dim light from hanging lanterns illuminated the cavern walls. The rabbit's eyes slowly began to adjust allowing him to see the rugs and tapestries that decorate the, all be it possibly temporary, abode of a gryphon. With no sign of a feathered lump laying in the corner snoozing or reading the rabbit relaxed, eyeing what appears to be a rough stone table to the side of the cavern. The makeshift table had books strewn across it near covering the surface completely. Most of the literature was closed but a few were left open on pages possibly of interest to the gryphon. The little rabbit approached carefully. The stone table was near shoulder height of the rabbit but this failed to dampen the his plans. Carefully he lifted the first book that lay open and looked at it. Quickly noting the text being from ages past the rabbit squinted to read the script sprawled across the pages.

The rabbit delicately pushed the hair away from his eyes, 'You must have impressive eye sight, gryphon. How does one read in light of this level?'

Careful not to lose the page the rabbit moved as if gliding over the stone floor to a tall pile of books and placed the open book down on top. Moving back to the table to repeat the process the rabbit slowly uncovered the tables surface. Once the table was clear the rabbit slid the basket's handle off his arm and carefully placed it down at his feet. Reaching in the rabbit pulled forth a tartan blanket and shook the folds from it. Lifting his arms high in one swift movement he flicked the blanket up and over the table letting it settle. Adjusting the corners to fulfil his own compulsive needs he stepped back to admire his work stumbling over a small pile of books. A sharp squeak leaped from his muzzle as he bent down to quickly stack them again while hoping the book where in particular order. Shaking the embarrassment from his mind he returned his attention to the wicker basket taking from it next a silver box. Placing the box in the centre of the table the rabbit undid the latch that held it closed and lifted open the lid. The sweet aroma of tea drifted into the air as a smug grin crept across the rabbits muzzle.

The rabbit sighed as images of time since pasted flashed in front of his eyes, 'I wonder the last time he managed to get his talons on tea? It has been a long time since gryphon's were allowed among the town's people and market stalls. Beasts? What do they know of beasts!'

Taking a breath to calm himself and adjust his coat the rabbit pulled the final item from the large basket. A piece of cloth wrapped around a cylindrical object and tied with a simple length if string. Placing it next to the silver box of tea the wrapped item stood at about three inches tall. Once the rabbit was finally happy with its placement he rubbed his paws together in excitement, his nerves beginning to show. A gentle tug on the strings bow and the knot was undone. Taking the string and tucking it into his pocket the rabbit watched the cloth wrapped object as if expecting it to move. After a moment in the flickering lamp light the rabbit reached forward and unwrapped the item. Unfolding the piece of cloth the rabbit revealed what the cloth had been hiding, a sponge cake lightly dusted with a white powder. Bouncing slightly the rabbit squeaked again but this time in suspense rather than surprise. 'How long will you be gone for?' the rabbit questioned to the empty cavern.

It had taken him the better part of the day to reach this cave and the only way he suspected it to be a gryphon's home was from the flash of darkness that he had seen leap so elegantly from the cliff side earlier that morning. Any number of things could of lurked within these stone walls but the farmer's stories had been correct for once and it seemed as if he may finally of caught up with his old friend. Covering the cake again lest it go stale while he waited the rabbit slumped down and rested his tired back against the stone side of the table. A grin crept across the rabbit's muzzle as he sighed wearily but victoriously sitting, waiting and hoping for a gryphon's return.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I know it is only an extract but I'd really like to know how to improve my style and if I've made any mistakes. I'm always happy to learn more and I'd really like to one day write something a little longer. Constructive comments much loved! <3
