The prologue to Vulpyre Tales, a personal project of mine. You can also see it on DeviantArt, and hopefully soon, on Fiction Press.

The story and all of its characters belong to me, ask permission before using.

It was an ordinary evening in Konoro City. The sky was clear, and it wasn't very chilly at all. There were a few people wandering the streets, though most were asleep in their homes. Amongst those on the streets was Archaeon Kitesun, a vulpin of considerable respect in the community, as he is the commander of the Vulpyrian Dark Lord Defense Units. Tonight, he finally managed to get some time off, and he wanted to spend it with his family. He continued down the starlit road, and soon reached his home, where he was greeted by his wife, Lilliana.

"Welcome home darling." She said joyously as she embraced her husband. "I see you got some time off."

"Aye. Finally repelled that legion of undead created by the new Dark Lord off near Cyrille." Archaeon responded, nuzzling his sweetheart as he spoke, "I wanted a chance to be with you and the kids. Speaking of which, where are my boys, dear?" he asked.

"I'm afraid you just missed them dear. I sent them to bed just a few moments ago. Karaki complained that he wanted to stay up to see you come home, but I told him that he'd get to see you tomorrow. They need their sleep you know." Lilliana answered.

"Ah, well, it can't be helped I suppose." Archaeon said. He shook his head playfully, and twitched his large, well-kept tail as he broke away from his wife's embrace and headed to the kitchen, to get something to eat. After only taking a few steps though, he heard a knocking at the door.

"Hmm, I wonder who that could be, this late at night?" Archaeon wondered aloud as he turned on his heel and headed for his door. "Don't worry, I'll get it." he told his wife as he stopped. He gripped the knob tightly and calmly opened the door. At the doorway, a man in a white rob of indeterminate age, mostly due to the fact that he wore his hood in a way that obscured his face, save for his mouth. From the lack of a tail though, Archaeon safely assumed that the man in question was a human.

"Well, hello. How may I help you this - OOF!!" Archaeon began to say just as the man landed a powerful front kick to the vulpin's stomach, sending him doubling back several steps. He recovered and drew his sword and shouted to his wife,

"Lilliana, get upstairs, and keep the boys safe. I'll take care of this man here." Lilliana nodded and rushed upstairs while Archaeon stayed and rushed the man who had assaulted him moments before. The man in turn drew his own blade, and the two clashed for several moments, neither able to touch the other. However, the hooded man was not the only intruder to the Kitesun residence that night, as he was accompanied by a young, white-furred felin lady in an elegant, dark purple dress and carrying a tall, ornate, macabre scythe. She appeared to be the one in charge as when she waved her hand at the robed man, he backed off. She then began to speak.

"Zios, good work on holding Mr. Kitesun for me." she said to the robed man, who took a bow. "Now, as for you, Mr. Kitesun, you have been a thorn in my side for far too long." She said coldly, looking Archaeon in the face.

"I don't understand what you mean!" Archaeon retorted before realizing what she meant, "Wait a minute, you're the Dark Lord behind those recent attacks across the country!? You're just a little girl! What has this world come to!?" he shouted in shock.

"Yes, I, Keiko Felidas, am responsible for launching those assaults. I aim to rule this country through any and whatever means necessary. You, Mr. Kitesun, have proven to be a constant nuisance that must be dealt with. So I'm sorry to say, tonight, you die!" The felin girl continued before gripping her scythe, and charging at Archaeon.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Lilliana rushed to her children's bedroom and began shaking her kids, Syaoran and Karaki, awake. Karaki, the older of the two, was the first to awaken. He looked to his mother sleepily, and asked,

"Mom, I thought we were supposed to be asleep. What's going on?"

"Dear, we're in a lot of danger right now. Wake your brother up, and follow me." Lilliana explained. Karaki then grabbed his younger brother, Syaoran, waking the young vulpin up, and the two of them followed their mother closely. They reached the stairs, when Lilliana stopped. The battle was still going on downstairs, and it was immediately apparent, by the scorch marks and frost, that both sides used magic. However, Archaeon was quickly getting fatigued, and Keiko quickly took advantage of an opening by plunging the blade of her scythe into his stomach, making him cry out in pain. She pulled her weapon out, causing his body to crumple to the ground, his blood quickly pooling around him. Lilliana and the two boys looked on in terror as Archaeon's life quickly faded from him.

Karaki soon broke away from his mother and rushed down the stairs in a fit of rage. He shouted at Keiko,

"How dare you! You monster! You killed him! I-I'll make you pay!" Karaki then rushed to his father's body and grabbed his sword. Lilliana, realizing what her eldest son was trying to do, rushed in a panic to get him away from that dangerous girl.

"Karaki, get back here right now!" she ordered in a frightened voice. When she got down the steps, she was stopped by the robed man, Zios, who grabbed her arm, smiling, showing a row of teeth including a pair of sharp incisors that elucidated his identity as a vampire. He said to the distressed vulpin lady,

"I'm afraid I can't let you disturb my mistress. I apologize madam, but I think it time you joined your husband." Zios then took a dagger with his other hand and stabbed Lilliana in the chest, just as Keiko blasted Karaki aside with a wave of dark magic, causing the vulpin child to fall unconscious. Syaoran, who was still upstairs, began to sob uncontrollably, and after Keiko and her vampire associate left, he gave a large scream,

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO---"

"---OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Syaoran, 12 years older now, screamed as he woke with a start. He breathed heavily as a cold sweat permeated his fur. He got up from his bed and looked out of his window. It was dark out, and it would still be two hours until sunrise. He decided to sit and try to calm his nerves. His brother, and his friends were still asleep, so Syaoran clearly didn't wake anyone up with his screaming. He thought about that horrible memory that surfaced in his nightmare, the memory of the night his parents were murdered before his very eyes.

"Why that memory, why now?" he asked nobody in particular. "I really miss them a lot. If only I could've done something about it." He rubbed his face a bit, before standing, and walking back to his bed to try to catch whatever sleep he could still get.

"Well, no point thinking about it now. Better try to go back to sleep." He said to himself as he climbed back onto his bed, and under his covers. He then closed his eyes once more.
