Running Tail Excerpt

Started writing a story that I'm not sure how it'd be received so thought I'd post an excerpt from the opening to get thoughts, ideas, even curious if people would like to see me try writing this for NaNoWriMo.

Paws slammed against the ground. I could feel my breath coming out in short spurts as I pushed my way through the trees and bushes. Pushing my back up against a tree I held my breath and listened. The sound of boots hitting the ground, shouts back and forth. They were after me. A stick snapped from somewhere to my left, I spun an ran again, sprinting away from my hiding place, my white tail snapping behind me. Shouts of anger and confusion and suddenly the air was filled with heat as bullets went whizzing by.

Dodging I leaped over a fallen tree and ducked behind a bolder. Looking round for some sort of escape I noticed an easily miss able cave entrance, ducking in there I pushed myself to the back, as far out of view as possible. The sound of pounding boots neared my hiding space. My ears flicked and flattened to my skull. Pushing back against the wall I felt my green T-shirt and cargo shorts dig into my fur.

I pushed my paws back against the rock walls, I knew I was a bright white, but in the darkness I was hoping the gray streaks in my fur might help me blend in. I listened closely, using my senses to try and hear if they had passed or not. Sighing when I heard nothing I let everything go and just slumped to the ground.

Looking back I probably should have tried to get some human clothes, something to hide how much I'm not like them. I mean, I have fur, paws, a muzzle, a tail, I was a furries wet dream. Seriously if it ever got out that the military had accidentally created an anthro they might be in trouble for going against certain regulations of human and animal test subjects, then again when was the military gonna play nice.

Sighing I closed my eyes and just listened to the silence. When I signed up they told me I was part of the future warfare project, now I'm a genetic mutation who's pretty much an arctic wolf human hybrid. The future they had envisioned was using genetic warfare, enhancing primal instincts, increasing pack mentality, making better soldiers if you would. My "batch" was, too much animal, not enough human.

My breathing slowed as I listened to the birds chirping, the sound of helicopters flying over, and best of all, the wind. Sleep over took my senses as exhaustion fully hit me.

As I awoke I was quickly aware that it was cold out. While my fur kept me warm, it didn't keep me as toasty as say being inside or in long sleeves would. Reaching for the sky my back I heard my back go crack, which is why I was now bent over panting. You know that perfect crack that takes away your wind, that's what I just did and boy was it good.

Stepping out of the cave into the morning sunlight I got a good view of the area surrounding me. Fog floated gently through the forest as leaves gently fell, there was a stream winding its way down the hill, various fallen logs, deer, squirrels, and even a few birds flying bout. And nothing stopped as I stood there. Normally animals would go an hide but for some reason nothing acknowledged I existed.

Slowly I stepped forward and started walking through the forest. It was very serene, which was odd considering before last night all I'd known for the last few years was the base where they were doing the tests. All memories of before had been erased in a way, they are there just, hard to recall. It didn't matter anyway, none of that existed, this was the start of my new life. I might be on the run, but I was free. And free was all that mattered.
