#1 of The Ashes of Destiny

Life burns with power

It is scorched by love

And fried with hate

But when the flame dwindles

A new fire will ignite

To carry on what we have started

And save the world from itself

By burning the evil in ourselves

And stepping into the ashes

It happened in a single instant delayed over seconds, a drunk driver came careening out of nowhere into the intersection Cathy and Alex had just pulled out into, hitting them broadside. Alex was killed instantly while Cathy was left uninjured, left to see the destruction around her. She was uninjured that is until another vehicle, a larger truck, struck her side of the car.

***

Four hours before, both of them were dancing happily at the River's Edge dance club, Cathy's silvery white hair glittering in the brilliant beams from the spotlights. Her grey tail flowing smoothly through the dance steps, wrapping itself around Alex's leg every now and then, causing him to kiss her between breaths even more passionately.

Alex picked her up and twirled her throughout the air as the song reached its climax, fueled by his love for her. As the song died down the DJ announced that there was to be a dance competition next Thursday for any couples.

"That was exhilarating," Cathy said out of breath, "let's go find a table, I'm starving."

They strode over to an empty booth away from most of the noise. A waitress quickly skated over to take their order.

"What can I do for ya?" she asked.

"I would like water while I regain by breath." Cathy replied, then took a out a comb to organize her hair from the dance.

"And you handsome?" the waitress asked Alex, her eyes moving around his sweaty body. He was lean but with visible muscles and broad shoulders, but that wasn't the most noticeable thing about him. Alex was a felinoid like Cathy, but his fur was pitch black, unlike Cathy's white fur. Pitch black everywhere but around his eyes; his eyes were a startling white that seemed to draw you in whenever he looked at you for too long.

"I would like a water too, and some chips with spinach dip too," Alex replied rubbing his paws together in anticipation.

"Can do. I'll be back in a few with your drinks," with that she skated off.

"So," Cathy started trying to make idle conversation, "What do you want to do after we get out of here?"

"Do I detect a bit of seductiveness in your voice you naughty cat?"

"No, I simply wanted to see what you wanted to do," Cathy replied, her blushing seen through her fur.

"Oh, sorry," Alex said thoroughly embarrassed, "I guess we could go to the movies."

"That sounds great, what movie were you thinking of?"

"How about The Dark Knight?"

"That sounds good, though I still think it's weird Heath Ledger plays in it."

"Why would that be weird?"

"Because of his role in Brokeback Mountain. You never saw that movie did you?"

"Nope," Alex replied then added trying not to laugh, "remind me again, which one plays the sheep?"

"Asshole," she replied trying not to laugh herself, "both of them are very good actors who earn hundreds of times more than you do."

"I was just kidding," Alex said holding his hands up, "I have no problem with gay people, I work with quite a few. I just love joking about them, even joking about them with them. It's okay, I swear."

"If you say so," she said sighing lightly, "the Dark Knight it is then. We'll get some food and go see the movie, any idea when it comes on?"

"No," he replied pulling out his Blackberry and looking it up on the internet, "we have about an hour till the next showing, plenty of time."

"Good," was all Cathy had time to say before the waitress came back with their drinks and the appetizer Alex ordered.

"Have you two made up your minds on what you would like to order tonight?" the waitress asked nervously and seeming to be preoccupied.

"Are you okay miss?" Alex asked being his normal caring self.

"What?" she asked startled by the question then regaining herself, "Yes, I'm afraid those teenagers over there gave me a hard time a minute ago, but it's fine now.

"Are you sure it's okay now?" Alex asked seeing a tear slide down her cheek.

The waitress seemed to just crumble then, her knees sinking to the floor and her head resting on the table. Alex started stroking her hair after he made a quick glance at Cathy for permission. She cried for what seemed like ten minutes constant until Cathy spoke up.

"Who has caused you this grief?" Cathy asked in her most sincere voice.

"Those teenagers sitting over their laughing," she replied trying to breathe correctly, "my husband recently passed away and somehow one of them knew. He bet one of his stupid friends to say something bad about him."

"When I walked over there," she continued taking in another breath, "the started to call him names and make fun of all the things he stood for. I Am So Angry Right Now. I would do something about it if I was strong enough, but I am not as strong as when I was younger."

"Don't worry," Cathy said getting up from her seat, "I will take care of these sniveling little brats."

"Honey," Alex said grabbing her arm, "Don't you think I should handle this?"

"They are only human," Cathy said revealing her canines in an evil grin, "I could kill them with my arms tied behind my back."

"Stop," said the waitress loudly, "You will get kicked out of here, you don't have to do anything. I will be fine."

"No," Cathy stated firmly, "I am getting tired of this world not caring about any people in it but themselves! It's time I acted."

"You can't do this!" the waitress said fully alert now, "If you do this you will be arrested, whether they deserved it or not. Please don't, you will only hurt yourself."

"I believe she has already made up her mind," Alex said as Cathy started walking towards the booth the teenagers were sitting.

"Did you give this waitress here a rough time?" Cathy asked them.

"What's it to you kitty?" the human sitting of the middle replied, apparently disliking furs.

"Want to see me purr," she replied sarcastically letting off a low growl.

"Ooh, kitty's got claws," he said in a fake voice of fear, causing Cathy's fur to stand on end and seem like it was very statically charged.

"Alright, come here you little fucker," she said leaning over the table and lifting him up by the collar of his shirt. Of course the other humans beside him tried to stop her, failing miserably as she used her other arm to throw them on the ground.

"What do you have against that waitress over there," Cathy asked him as she held him above the ground by his shirt.

"Nothing," he said realizing he had lost, "we just thought it would be a little fun, we didn't mean for it to be really bad."

"Fun! Fun, she was over there bawling her eyes out because of what you said to her. You call that fun!"

"No...It's just...We thought...she would be okay with it."

"Well, she is obviously not okay with it," she said dropping him on his back, knocking the wind out of him, "Now, get up and go apologize to her, or I will beat the shit out of you."

He hurried over to the waitress to apologize to her, but when he was close enough she got up and slapped him as hard as she could across the face, causing him to black out. Although the waitress broke her hand in the process.

"Shit," Cathy heard her say as she ran over to help.

"Now why the hell did you do that?" she asked the waitress.

"I don't know," was her only reply.

"He was actually going to apologize to you, and you knocked him out. Granted he was pretty weak to be knocked out by a slap, but still."

"That felt so good though," the waitress said cuddling her hand.

"Yeah, well wake him up if you can. We still have a movie to catch, you want to come?"

"Uh, sure. My shift ended about fifteen minutes ago."

"Okay," said Alex, "now that this little event is over, I'll prop him up over in his booth. It looks like his friends left long ago."

"Good, I'll meet you at the car in a few minutes. I will get some ice for, what is your name?"

"Maria."

"Okay, I'm going to get some ice for Maria's hand. Then we can leave, that sound good?"

Cathy retrieved the ice and met them out at the car. The drive to the theater was a quiet one; no one talked or said anything until they arrived. They bought their tickets, 30$, they bought snacks and drinks, 20$, since their dinner was interrupted and seated themselves in the theater and waited for the movie to begin.

Two and a half hours later the movie ended and all three left the movie theater.

"Where do you live Maria?" Cathy asked.

"Oh, you don't need to take me back to my house, just take me back to the club. Besides, my car is there anyway."

"Bye," both Cathy and Alex said together as they dropped Maria off at the club. They exchanged phone numbers and hugs then Maria went back inside to get her personal items. Then they started heading home.

They drove across the city back to their home for around fifteen minutes, and then they were stopped at a red light. Yellow. Green, Cathy pulled out into the intersection, saw something out of the corner of her eye, then everything went a blur.

‘Where am I?' a voice asked.

‘Who am I?' it asked again.

‘What am I?' it asked a third time.

‘Why am I?' it finished.

A Bright Light, Run!

Darkness, to compressing.

Into The Void, so relaxing. So cool. So warm. Such pain. Such love.

Okay, that's it for the prologue thingy I wrote. I had wished for it to be an entire first chapter, but I figured it would be good to stop here. Yay for cliffhangers! Kind of. The next chapter will be around twenty or more pages if I get it right.
