Grim

John stood in a dark alley opposite a large twelve story building. He stood with his back against the wall, eyes closed and calmly breathing.

It was raining that night. Droplets of water splashed onto the sidewalk, the reflection of street lights giving it a pale glow. Despite the grim weather, a full moon shone down onto the streets, acting like a beacon of hope to the eternal darkness around it.

John opened his eyes and turned his head to the left, to look at the entrance of the building he planned to enter. The building he planned to enter belonged to an extremely wealthy business man known as Frank Zarotti.

Frank Zarotti was the CEO of a weapons research facility known as Armstech Inc. Armstech was one of the biggest suppliers of weapons in the world, supplying guns to over twenty countries. Unfortunately they also supplied weapons to terrorist organizations and gangs in many of those countries. But as one of their major customers was this country's government, along with many others. This meant they were relatively untouchable to any law enforcers that wanted to go after them. John however was no law enforcer.

A car pulled up in front of the entrance to the corporate building. The car was a black Bentley Arnage. A red fox got out of the driver's seat and opened the passenger door. A 6ft tall Steppe Eagle climbed out. He had broad shoulders, brownish coloured feathers and wore a suit that was the dullest shade of grey possible. Typical CEO type, all work no pleasure. The Eagle quickly walked into the building while the fox got back into the driver's seat of the Bentley and drove off.

John had watched the eagle the entire time. The speed at which he walked into the building meant that he was a very cautious person, not the John was surprised. Someone in Mr Zarotti's position is bound to make a lot of enemies.

John stayed in the alley for a further 30 minutes before walking towards the entrance of the building he was watching and entering.

The inside of the building was a stark contrast to the grim outside. The floor and ceiling pillars were made of white marble, with a row of exotic plants lining a path towards the receptionist desk. The inside of the building was in such pristine condition that you could see your reflection in almost every surface your eyes gazed upon.

John didn't stop to look at the surroundings. He didn't like lavishly decorated areas as their only purpose was to distract everyone who looked at them from the reality of the outside world, something which he thought did far too often.

John walked up to the reception desk. A white cat sat at the desk. The cat had a perfectly curved figure, long hair that was neatly tied back and a very beautiful looking face. The receptionist's beauty matched her surroundings. When she looked at John she had a look that showed she was intellectual and not just pretty face "How may I help you?"

"I'm here to see Mr Zarotti" John answered in a dull voice, not showing any signs of emotion.

"What business do you have with him?"

"Private matters" John put a little emphasis of the word private, showing that the matters were important and he was not prepared to talk about it.

"What is your name?"

"Grim"

The receptionist gave John a questioning look before picking a phone next her and dialling a number. After a brief conversation on the phone, the receptionist put the receiver down and looked up back at John.

"Take the elevator on your left and go to the top floor, Mr Zarotti will be waiting for you."

John slightly nodded his head, as a sign of "yes" and "thank you", and made his way to the elevator as instructed. John entered the elevator and pushed the button with the highest number. The elevator made a dull noise and started to move upwards, a calming music began playing in the background.

John gave a long heavy sigh. Normally, other people in his job occupation would never give there "work name" or even let their target know of their presence. John however was quite well known in the crime world and when his targets were made aware of his presence, they knew what would be coming so they usually go quietly. There were of course the odd exception but these sorts of people were never a problem, not for John anyway.

The elevator came to a halt at the top floor and the doors opened. John was greeted with two very tall and very well built security guards. Both were of the bear species and had emotionless expressions on their faces.

"We will take you to Mr Zarotti's office" One of the bears said

John followed the bears silently. He guessed that they were Zarotti's personal bodyguards, or something close to that occupation. The corridor to Zarotti's office was surprisingly bland compared to the lush designs of the bottom floor hallway. The floor had a simple dull grey carpet, while the walls were just whitewashed.

Once John and the two bears had reached the door at the end of the hallway, one of the bears opened the door while the other stepped to the side. John walked between the guards and through the door to see Zarotti standing behind a plain desk and looking outside the window. Zarotti's office looked like a normal the standard office commonly seen in a normal workplace "Was wondering when you would show up" Zarotti moved from behind his desk and stood directly in front of John "Well can I at least see my killers face?"

John removed the large black hat he was wearing to reveal his face. Zarotti looked closely at him, analysing his features. John was a cat of the F catus decent. His fur was a black colour and not very well groomed. He had dark hazel eyes, although his right eye was extremely bloodshot. Zarotti stood back and showed an expression of interest "You seen a little young to be the fabled assassin you claim to be".

"My looks are very deceiving of my age" John said in an unemotional tone

"So I see"

"Look can we just get this over with. You already know why I'm here"

"To the point, I like that" Zarotti looked at the two bears behind John "You two wait outside, I'll call you when I need you" Both guards nodded in unison and left the room, quietly closing the door behind them. Zarotti sat in his chair behind his desk and opened one of the desk drawers. "Before you kill me there is something I would like to find out" Zarotti quickly pulled a silenced pistol from his drawer and fired a single shot at John's head.

John stood still unflinchingly still as Zarotti fired the pistol. The bullet entered his right eye and exited out the back of his head. John stood completely unfazed "Thanks a lot, do you know long it takes to grow eyeballs back" John said in a slightly annoyed tone.

Zarotti smiled and calmly put the gun back in his desk drawer. "I just wanted to confirm that you were this so called immortal assassin."

"Enough chit chat" John reached into his inside coat pocket and pulled out a black and red, custom modified Desert Eagle and pointed it at Zarotti. Zarotti, like John previously, sat unflinchingly despite staring down the barrel of a gun.

"Wait, I would like to ask you one more question. Don't you feel lonely?" Zarotti asked

"Oh for god's sake" John fired a single shot at Zarotti's head. Zarotti fell back into his chair, blood now flowing from the bullet hole in his forehead. John walked over to Zarotti's corpse and shut his eyes

"The answer to your question is yes, I feel very lonely"

The door to Zarotti's office burst open and the guards outside ran into the room, guns unsheathed and pointed at John. One of the guards looked at Zarotti's corpse.

"Kill him" the guard the right shouted

Both guards unloaded their clips into John. The force of the shots, coupled with some of the bullets going through him caused John to fall through the now shattered glass of Zarotti's office.

John looked at the sky as he fell and sighed "So much for an easy job". His vision blacked out just as he hit the floor.
