#2 of The Mute

Here's chapter two of The Mute. I typed this on my phone so my fingers are killing me and there was a lot of backspacing. Also the first chapter was pretty short and had too much conversation, so I'm gonna try my best to concentrate the story and focus on atmosphere.

Before we go on, I feel like I should tell you a bit about myself. I'm a wolf with mid-long fur. I stand about 5'6" now, but in fifth grade I was only 4'7", I'm pretty short, especially for a wolf, even Kyle is taller than me. That, combined with the fact that I'm incredibly slim, and the fact that I can't talk, makes for a frustratingly small presence. But I don't mind it all that much since I'm such an introvert.

Anyways, let's get back to where we left off.

Kyle and his family lived in a beautiful New England Victorian, complete with a turret and colored shingles. It was pretty odd to find this house in suburban Minnesota neighborhood, but at the time I thought nothing of it.

"Would you two like anything to eat?" His mom asked, "I just made some tomato soup"

I nodded quickly and with a smile, but Kyle stuck out his tongue and moaned "ewwww, again?"

*Sigh* "Yes, it's what your father wanted; again" she replied, very clearly agitated.

"Ok! Well we're gonna go upstairs ok?" Kyle asked, his giant fluffy tail swooshing back and forth in excitement; and before she could reply, Kyle had already grabbed my wrist and pulled me up the stairs with him.

Kyle's room was pretty boring, he had a twin bed, with a cheap netbook carelessly thrown on it. At the foot of the bed was a table with an older TV hooked up to a GameCube. In the corner there was a small desk with books, school supplies, paper and other random knick-knacks. On the wall was some art he had drawn as a toddler and a Harry Potter poster. I was quite pleased that I didn't see common toys like Lego, Minecraft, or Beyblade, because while that stuff may be entertaining for an average fifth grader, I was easily bored by them and felt couldn't stand it when other boys carried heated discussions about them. Hopefully Kyle felt the same.

"So, what should we do?" Kyle seemed to have lost some enthusiasm over pondering what to do.

I pulled out my notepad and wrote *Do you have Super Smash Bros. for your GameCube?"

Kyle squinted at the note pad (I have small handwriting) " Oh, yeah wanna play?"

I nodded as he began to turn on the system and untangle the wires.

"Just warning you I'm really good at this"

"Yeah right" I thought

I crushed him.

We finished round #35 just in time for dinner. Which we quickly ate before heading outside to play.

It was beautiful outside. The trees were black silhouettes against the purple-blue sky which faded to yellow at the west end, and to the starry night sky on the east end. We walked barefoot on the soft grass, too early to turn brown. The air was a cool 60 degrees (Fahrenheit) so we wore our soft sweatshirts, mine green, which matched my eyes, and his red.

Now being in fifth grade, I had no sense of romance. But looking back I realize it was incredibly romantic. The two of us, alone on a calm fall night.

"This is my favorite kind of weather" Kyle murmured.

I responded by holding a thumb to my chest as if to say "mine too"

We sat there for a while, looking at the sky, sitting on the cool grass starting to wet with dew. I felt Kyle slide closer, I could hear him breathing, he was getting closer. I felt his soft, warm, damp muzzle on my cheek for a quick second and he went back to sitting normally without saying anything. I blushed, but thankfully it was too dark for Kyle to see.

We both sat there until we heard my mom pulling into the driveway to pick me up. We both said goodbye.

It was like it didn't happen.
