Chapter 1: The Apple

"Chris, can you hear me?"

"I hear you loud and clear, Rachel," I said as I climbed up one of the towers of New York. I saw an open vent and was trying to reach it.

"There are roughly a dozen Templars in the room that vent connects to. Be careful."

"When aren't I?"

"Do we have to go over this, Chris?"

"No, but it wouldn't hurt."

"Just go." I continued my climb up the skyscraper. I was glad it was night; the dark made it easier to climb undetected. After what seemed like hours, but was only five minutes, I reached the vent and pulled myself in. I pulled out a little communicator pad and tapped out a rhythm that meant I was safe inside the vent but in Templar territory. I looked through the vent screen on the inside of the building and saw a dozen, if not more, Templars in a meeting. I wanted to break open the vent, to surprise them. But I found I'd live longer if I waited. So, I eavesdropped.

"You have the package, Tony?"

"Right here, boss."

"Let me see. Ah, yes. Very good. Finally, an Apple if Eden."

"We still haven't got the staff yet, boss."

"Let me tell you something, Patrick: I don't care about no Goddamned staff right now. The staff could be in Goddamn Timbuktu for all I care."

"It wouldn't be hard to get it, boss. It's still in the Vatican."

"That would be extremely difficult to get, Richard. The Vatican is crawling with security from the raid to steal the sword."

"Is it?"

"Yes. Now, with the Apple in my possession, you are all dismissed."

"But, boss-"

"I said, dismissed."

I watched as the Templars funneled out of the room. Soon, all that remained was "boss". I heard him muttering to himself. "The Apple. We finally have the Apple. Wait until Abstergo heard about this. We can use it to install its technology into Abstergo's products." I waited until his back was turned to me before I opened the vent screen, silently, and hopped into the room.

"Or," I interrupted. "I could take it off your hands and deliver it to my associates." There was a metallic clang as a steel security door slammed shut behind the door to the room.

"Assassin!"

"Scream all you want," I taunted as I approached him. "The security doors are shut, thanks to a colleague hacking the door system. They can't get to you."

"Don't make me use this," the "boss" stammered, holding up the Apple. I swatted it out of his hand.

"Use what?" Swiftly, I flexed my wrist, letting the hidden blade attatched to my forearm extend fully. Then, I plunged the blade into his heart. "Your mind has been corrupted by the Templars."

"I only meant to fight for a just cause."

"As all men join a cause they believe is just. It's a shame it usually ends like this. Rest in peace, and may you find peace in death." I stood up, closed the "boss'" eyes, retrieved the Apple of Eden, and stepped toward the vent. "Ok, Rachel, open the security door." I hoisted myself into the vent, closed the screen, and crawled back to the open end, leading outside. As I crawled out of the vent, the door burst open and a dozen Templar voices rang throughout the room.

"Where's the Apple?"

"Where's the Assassin?"

"You'll never know," I muttered to myself.
