Belated Birthday Gift
I wrote this in my notebook earlier today. Hopefully it's as good as I initially thought it was.
Lee took another drink of his iced coffee and then returned to reading his favorite web-comic while wondering what else he should be doing at the moment "I really should do my homework right now." Just as he was about to click on the next page button on the website, his phone started playing a familiar codec tone from a game he liked which made him scramble around for it "Who...?"
He wasted no time in answering the call despite not checking who it was "Uh, hello?" It took a few moments but the person on the other end finally responded
"Hi there Lee! It's me, Joel." The husky sounded excited for some unknown reason "Drop whatever you are doing and meet me at the park."
"Er," Lee looked at his opened laptop and then at his binder that contained his incomplete schoolwork "Can't it wait until tomorrow?"
Joel let out a sigh "Please just come over here, I really have to give- I mean tell you something." Lee could hear him impatiently tapping his fingers against some object "Please?"
"I don't know Joel." The coyote placed his other hand onto his shoulder hoping that Joel would just give up on trying to get him to meet up with him "It is getting pretty late and you know how my parents are."
"Lee could you stop being so stubborn for one moment and just get your tail over here." Joel demanded
Not wanting to disappoint his friend, he finally gave in "Okay I'll head over there in just a moment."
"Thanks." Joel immediately ended the call right after
"Better get going I guess." Lee stood up, put his phone away, then put on his shoes and jacket "Wonder what he wants with me."
Lee was about to leave his home when another coyote stopped him "Where are you going?"
"I, uh, I'm going to see a friend at the park over there." The female coyote still seemed curious "Don't worry mom I won't be gone long."
"Why exactly does he want to see you?" Knowing how his mother acted, he tried to come up with a reasonable response
"I'm not so sure myself but-" A look of disapproval appeared on her face and she tried to speak but Lee interrupted her "But, what do you think someone like me, someone who spends the majority of his free time at home, is going to do outside?" He noticed how bad that made his social life seem but he didn't really mind
"Okay fine."
"Alright thanks, bye." Lee quickly rushed outside and began walking towards the park "Now onto Joel."
It took awhile, maybe 10 minutes Lee assumed when he reached the park "Where is he?" He saw no signs of his friend anywhere as he walked through the park "He better be here."
"Lee!" The coyote turned around to see Joel speeding down the path towards him on his bike "There you are!" The bike suddenly stopped and nearly threw Joel over the front
"Careful there." Lee smiled and examined the husky, he was wearing a red knit cap that was hiding his ears and a pair of headphones were down around his neck "Nice to see at least one of us is dressing differently." He admired the black jeans and dark blue jacket he was wearing when he noticed something
"You wear that shirt I gave you?" Lee pointed out the Portal themed shirt
"Oh this?" Joel looked at it and grinned "Course' I do! You gave it to me for my birthday." His expression went blank for a moment "What was I going to do again..?"
"Something wrong?"
"Oh right, birthdays!" Joel snapped his fingers "Yours was on August 13th!"
"Yep. It passed awhile ago." Lee reminded him
"I know and I feel bad about how I forgot about it especially when you remembered mine." Joel slid the backpack off of him and unzipped one of the pockets to reach in it and grab something "It's here somewhere."
"Huh?" Lee tried to peek in the bag but Joel didn't allow him to do so "What do you have there?"
"Got it." Joel pulled out a rather lengthy looking hard cover book and held it out to Lee "Here's your uh, belated birthday gift!"
Lee hesitantly grabbed the book and eyed it for a moment "How'd you- Where'd you even find this?" It was the final book in his favorite fantasy series and he was unable to find any version of it anywhere, not even a digital version "I don't even know what to- Uh, thank you!"
Joel seemed happy at the sight "I love how adorable you look when you are happy. Especially about a book." He continued "It's even better when you notice that you are rather tall, 6'0 to be exact, people of our height are expected to be all athletic and stuff."
Too busy appreciating the book, he was unaware of the 'adorable' compliment Joel gave him "But still, where did you get it?"
"Ever since you got me into reading I would stop by this bookstore that's close to my house to sift through the hundreds of books for something that interests me and I just happened to come across this particular one." Joel frowned "It was rather expensive but I knew you really wanted it so I bought it for you."
"Oh Joel, you didn't have to get it for me if you didn't want to." Lee pondered on what he could do to pay his friend back "Is there anything you want in return?"
"Not really but if you don't mind," Joel looked at Lee and extended his arms out "Mind giving me a hug?"
"Uh." Lee slightly blushed and scratched the back of his head "You sure?" Joel just closed his eyes and nodded "Okay then." Slowly Lee entered into a hug with Joel and it didn't last long when Joel whispered to him
"Do you want to be my boyfriend?"
"Wh- What are you-" Lee quickly backed away, flustered "I-I don't know, yes? No wait, no! Oh dear, I meant yes." The coyote looked from side to side and brought a hand to his mouth "I'm not sure, I-I'm not even- Whatever I'll do it as long as it's you!" Lee and Joel were staring at each other in total silence for a few seconds
"Heh." Joel snickered and covered his face with his hands "Aha, just kidding! I really got you there, didn't I?" He broke out into a hysterical laughter "Look at your face though!"
The coyote was madly embarrassed "You idiotic dog." Lee turned away, too embarrassed to face the husky again "Why would you do that?"
When Joel finally calmed down he apologized and got back on his bike "Yeah sorry, that's actually all I have to tell you right now."
Lee was ready to leave "Anything else?"
"Well, come here for a moment." Joel motioned for Lee to come closer to him "Just a little closer." By now, Lee was already within his reach "Here goes nothing." With that, Joel leaned towards Lee as if he was going to kiss him
"Got you again!" Joel then pushed Lee away from him and said "See you tomorrow!" He winked and flashed the peace sign at him before he sped off on his bike
"What was that?" Lee was just standing there , slightly embarrassed. "I...Should be getting home now!" He started off towards his house and quickly began thinking about a few things, one being that he actually wanted Joel to kiss him and the other was if his favorite characters will be killed off in the new book.
