#18 of An Anthro's Tale

14 year old Seth Allen is trying to keep his head down long enough to survive high school,he has an insane crush on a girl way out of his leauge and he loves cars and loves to work on them. He has his own company,Draconian Customs, their slogan is:"If you can dream it,we can build it." Seth and his friends have the lofty dream of seeing one of their cars on the 128 Miles of Road America. And it looks like that dream may come true when four men from Delton Motorsports commission them for a Pontiac GTO Hardtop for the 128 mile endurance race. Seth, however,is hiding a secret.

In all honesty, even with Alex being the pro driver that he is,I never expected our Camaro to have the slightest chance at this race. It was full of veteran drivers with ultra modified cars and high performance engines. We were nothing but a group of awkward teenagers and a few dragons who worked on cars in what little spare time we had. But somehow we'd run with the pro's and beat them,on Road America to boot. My heart was piratically about to explode from excitement.

"You won!",DJ said as Alex pulled off his helmet.

Alex laughed,"I sure did...but I prefer the Supra you guys built me over anything else,I mean,I love this IROC-Z and I'm gonna have you guys build me one for sure, but the Supra is just better."

I smiled,"it's the best car in the world,I wish Toyota would hurry up and put out the new model so it can trash the Skyline at Nurburgring and we can build on one."

"Screw that",Tristan said,"we NEED to build a Skyline."

"I agree",Josh said.

Alex laughed,"You guys go have fun,my team and I will take care of the car."

I gave Alex a smile before darting off. I found Mom,Dad and Tess sitting in the tailgate of the Ford. Tess was laying lazily in the truck with her tongue hanging out. She was getting looks from people who were passing by and like Joe at IHOP this morning, she didn't seem to care or even notice.

"I had to admit",Mom said as I walked up to the Ford and sat beside her,"I had my doubts about your car winning the race but you did it,I'm proud of you."

Mom hugged me tightly and kissed me between my horns.

"Thank's Mom",I said,"all those hours of sewating, sore paws and achining back was worth it to see it fly across the finish."

"I bet son",Dad said.

"Can we hang around for the auto show?",I asked looking to the ground.

Mom smiled,"of course honey."

"Awesome!",I said hoping off the tailgate.

Tess let off a large yawn and pulled herself up.

"I guess I better keep him in check",she said pulling herself off the tailgate and cracking the bones in her back.

She walked over to me and wrapped her wing around me.

"Alright",she said smiling,"lets go."

Tess and I walked down to the track where the auto show was just starting. Right off the bat i picked out the Toyota GT-ONE TSO32 from last night,a cool looking RUF FS-12,a nice '64 Chevy Corvette Roadster, several model years of Nissan's drift icon the SX and six or seven 2002 Toyota Supras. Joe was showing off his Mustang's engine,Alex had the 92 Supra we'd built him about a year back and Jack was showing off the Falcon and the Camaro while DJ was showing off her Saleen. Tess and I walked down the rows of cars. They came in every color of the rainbow from blue to red to yellow to a girl about Tess's age with a hot pink Skyline GTR Spec-V with a transparent aquamarine stripe and two blue ones on it. Nothing on the car was a solid color and it looked like it would just fade out at any second.

There was another car,a Toyota 2000 GT,that I just found myself drawn to. Tess and I walked over to it and began checking it out.

It was a dark green color which I thought suited it perfectly. It was resting on Toyota Motorsports racing tires and American Racing muscle car style rims. Inside was all modern with red and black Nylon seats,a custom Momo Italy steering wheel, roll cage,Rearaco racing harness and custom silver trim. Resting under the hood was a nice V6 at 3.5 liter displacement and twin Centrifugal Superchargers. It exhaled through wide Teslo headers and the entire car was very well done.

Right next to it was a Toyota Celica. It was sky blue with a wide wing on the back that stood over the car. It had Karamani Aerodynamics bumpers and side skirts was well as an after market hood. It rested on street legal soft DOT spec tires and Motgi racing Ten Spoke rims. The inside of the car was done in tan with black and blue Rearaco racing seats and harnesses to match. A red roll cage,Momo Italy steering wheel and custom gauges and readouts rounded out the interior. Resting under the hood was an V-8 out of a Ford GT. It was rated at 6.5 liters displacement and the drive train had been switched from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive,a nice move if you ask me. The engine cover was painted the same blue as the car's body and the Twin Screw had been pulled out of a top fuel dragster without a doubt.

As Tess and I kept looking through the cars, the smell of cooking meat began to drift through the air.

"Smells like the BBQ has started",Tess said,"hopefully they'll be serving soon."

"Yeah",I said with my mouth watering slightly,"I'm hungry."

Tess and I kept looking around at all the different cars as we waited for the guys at the grills to finish their work. I had my snout stuck under the hood of a slick Dodge Viper with AWD and a black and red racing stripe when Tess nudged me.

"Hey Seth?",she asked,"what kind of car is that?"

Tess pointed to a neon orange car with chrome Momo Italy rims and large carbon fiber wing. I recognized it's body style immediately.

"It's Lamborghini Gallardo",I said in reply.

"Let's go check it out",Tess said.

I followed her over to the car as she began inspecting it.

The car had a blaze orange body, just a little brighter than my sister's wings. It rested on chrome Momo Italy GTS rims and soft tire compound. It had a custom interior with a laser light print fabric that had black as a background set in the doors. The dash was a bright tan with a black and readouts and a custom steering wheel. The shifter was an aftermarket short throw and the seats were red and black Rearaco's,as well as the racing harnesses. It was packing a V-12,like a proper Lambo should and exhaled through wide Teslo headers. Nothing on the car was stock,in fact this was probably a completely custom build.

"Nice piece",I said looking it over.

I spotted another car out of the corner of my eye and went to check it out. Upon getting there,I discovered it was a Ferrari 458 Itallia, the most technologically advanced car in Ferrari's line up. The car was resting on soft DOT spec Bridgestone tires and Momo Italy GTR rims. The car was painted in Neon blue and a large wing rested on the back of the car. The inside was done in tan and the steering wheel was right out of a Ferrari F50 Compotozone GT. The seats were red and black Rearaco's and the seat belts had been replaced with Sparrow Racing harnesses. As I went along the car,I noticed the engine had been ripped out of a Chevy stock car and that it was sporting twin turbos. The car was done in a way that made it stand out.

I was looking over a nearby Nissan Fairlady Z when Tess came and got me.

"There serving now",she said smiling,"let's go get some eats."

I smiled and followed my sister down to the lake where the BBQ was set up. Set around the lake were five huge trailer grills. Two of them were huge gas fired monsters that were factory built. The three others were made out of giant gas tanks and were attached to their trailers. They had huge exhaust ports and were black from their charcoal. Smells like none I'd ever smelled were radiating from them. There weren't just BBQ pits either. There were a couple of food trucks there along with the Jake's Pizzeria food truck. I remembered reading about it in Road & Track, yes I read that magazine, you don't like it? Take it up with someone who cares.

It was made out of a large Blue Bird cab-over bus with it's drive train switched from Rear Wheel Drive to All Wheel Drive. It's engine was a 12 cylinder Audi TDI that makes a nasty 1,000 horsepower and nearly twelve hundred foot pounds of torque. It inhaled through ceramic ball bearing racing twin turbo chargers designed for maximum boost with high flow external racing waist gate, high flow piston type blow off valve, alcohol injection and an integrated electronic boost controller and exhaled through port matched light weight ceramic coated anti reversion headers and a straight through race tuned exhaust system. It sat on low friction coil-over racing shocks with remote reservoirs for maximum valving control and matched linear race springs with adjustable helm joints and steel bearings, sweet looking twenty inch black and chrome rims and soft DOT spec tire compound. I could go into a monologue about how many upgrades it has. The guy who had built it said he did it because he wanted his business to stand out,I would say he met the task quite nicely. Tess and I walked over to the truck's widow where a man in a white apron met us.

"Can I help you?",he asked smiling.

"Yes",Tess said,"I'd like a small pepperoni and sausage Calzone and a small cheesy bread as well as a coke."

"How about you?",the man asked smiling at me.

"Just a Coke",I said in reply.

The man turned back to Tess.

"That's 10.50 for you and a dollar for you."

I handed the man a dollar from my pocket as Tess gave him a ten and a one.

"Gimme a few minutes to get your order mam",the man said to Tess as he handed me a decent sized cup of Coca Cola.

"Why didn't you order anything?",Tess asked.

"Oh I will",I replied,"I wanna see what kind of meat there is before I get any pizza."

Tess shrugged as Will walked up.

"Tess,Seth",he said.

"What's up little bro?",Tess asked.

"Mom said once you guys got done getting your food to come back to the Ford."

"Makes sense",I said.

The man handed Tess a white paper bag that had a "Jake's Pizzeria" logo on it and a Coke.

"I take it your going to check out the BBQ?",she asked.

"Yep",I answered.

"Don't kill anyone",she said smiling.

I laughed,"we'll see."

Tess started back towards the Ford with will as I hit up the BBQ trucks. I checked all five, but only the Lone Star Steak truck was appealing. There weren't too many people there, only five or six, with Rossi and Joe being two of them, which didn't surprise me.

"Feeling homesick huh?",I asked walking up to him. Joe looked up and smiled at me.

"A little",he said,"it's nice to have a truck from Texas up here."

"What's it serving?",I asked.

"Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs and even mac and cheese",Joe said,"basically anything that's bad for your health."

He grinned as Rossi spoke up.

"You like BBQ huh Seth?"

"I like meat in general",I replied,"I'll eat it raw."

"Raw?",Rossi asked.

He looked stunned and then grinned,"I guess you weren't lying."

"What did I tell you?",Joe replied.

It took me a minute to put the pieces together.

"Ya told him didn't you?",I asked punching Joe's shoulder,"you know it's a secret."

Joe laughed.

"Relax brother",Rossi said,"my lips are sealed."

"The better be",I said showing my teeth,"or else."

Rossi grinned. The line moved forward with a quick pace and soon Joe,Rossi and I were at the truck looking over a menu.

"You guys ready to order?",a man at inside the truck asked. "

Yeah",Joe said,"gimme an Ultra Meaty hamburger Idaho style with a side of Tater Tots and a medium

coke."

"I'll take beef ribs with Stubs BBQ sauce and Home-style Mac&Cheese and a Sprite",Rossi said.

"I'll have a hamburger with let us,tomato, onions and red peppers,Mac&cheese on the side and a Coke",I said.

The man yelled something to a few other guys in the truck and then looked at us.

"That's 6.40 from you",the man said pointing at me,"12.21 from you",he pointed at Joe,"and 8.91 from you,"the man pointed at Ross.

We handed him our money and had barely turned our backs when he stuck his head back out

"Ok",he said in a southern accent,"Ultra Meaty hamburger,Beef Ribs and Rainforest Hamburger."

We took our bags from him and walked off. Joe and Rossi went over and sat by the lake to talk while I went back to the Ford where I found my family and friends. I went over and sat next to Shelby and reached into my bag for my hamburger.

"Guess what Seth?",DJ asked.

"What sister?",I answered.

"There's a race in a half hour, the American Truck Challenge."

"Yeah?",I asked taking a bite.

"I entered the Saleen",DJ said.

I laughed,"those guys are in for a nasty surprise."

DJ smirked,"a few guys have already told me I should drop out because I have no chance of winning."

"There afraid of losing to a girl",Tess said leaning on Tristan's shoulder,"boys are all the same." She gave Tristan a lick across his snout, who returned it.

"I wondered how long DJ could keep out of a race with her truck",Trent said,"monster makes 800 horsepower by means of a Cummins 4BT engine and sends all it's power to the rear wheels."

"You kids cant keep your hands off anything can you?",Dad asked,"you couldn't even leave our family car alone."

"No Dad",I answered,"we can't."

Dad laughed.

"I'm glad you guys have such a talent for modifying cars",Mom said.

I just shrugged,"and it makes us a lot of money."

Mom laughed,"that it does."

Lunch was ripe with conversation of the upcoming races, cars and Tess even told a few stories about her days as a drifter. After lunch,a call went out.

"If you are participating in the American Truck Challenge please ready your vehicle."

"That's us",DJ said as she and Jack stood up.

We all walked down to DJ's truck. She had moved it to be inline with the rest of the trucks. There was a GMC Cyclone, two Jeep Wangerlers, two Honda Ridgelines, two Dodge Rams and two Saleen S331s,one of which was DJ's. My friends truck was sporting two RWD stickers on the back,as were all the other trucks expect for the Ridgelines, both of which were sporting AWD stickers. As we looked around at the trucks,DJ came up. She was wearing her black racing suit with the scaleprint and a white "Draconian Customs",logo on the front and a gold falcon design on the back.

"Seth",DJ said,"I want you guys in the pits just in case I need you."

"Can do DJ",I said smiling,"you better win too."

"She will",Josh said,"those dudes don't stand a chance."

I laughed,"no they don't."

"Drivers to your cars",the loud speaker cracked,"drivers to your cars."

"That's us",Jack said.

He and DJ walked to her truck as we entered the pits. The drivers pulled up to the starting line. DJ was in sixth place. The lights on the starting beacon went from red,to yellow. A surge of engine noise went through the air as the light went to it's second yellow. There was a another loud revv, and the light went green. The rear wheels of all the trucks, excluding the Ridgeliners, began to spin out and the smell of burning rubber took over the air.

Yet another race had begun.
