#1 of The Lucky Ones

This story is a slightly distant sequel to my previous story "We Can Coincide"

Be warned: there will be a lot darker events occurring throughout this story, but of course more room for other emotions.

Every once in awhile I have a night that I like to call a lucky one. Because on those nights, I dream. And when I dream, things are always better. On those nights walking isn't a chore, existing isn't a burden on others, and everything feels free. But even wanting to dream seems like a selfless act that would just be better dealt away with if I never would of woken up the next day. Who wants to live with a thirteen year old scrawny little kid who can barely walk due to cerebral palsy. My own mother and father can't decide on the custody probably since neither of them want a failure son like me. Seriously what's stopping me from ending it?

*bang bang bang*

The surprising sound of someone knocking on the front door instantly broke me from my subconscious thought. I swung my legs over off of the couch making sure I fully had my balance before standing up, just in case my body failed me like it usually does. Knowing that I'd take a minute to get to the door I yelled out, "hold on I'm coming!"

Each step towards the door was agony to me, always reminding me just how abnormal life was. How I'm a senior citizen trapped in a teenager's body. After a good minute of struggle I finally made it to the door and peeked out the peephole. To my sudden surprise, there was nothing visible. Ugh I hate these pranksters...

I started to slowly make my way back to the couch to wallow back in depression, the knocking returned in three short taps. "Come on just leave me alone!"

Deciding not to be made a fool of anymore, I bravely grabbed the door handle and ripped the door inwards nearly knocking me off balance from the sudden weight shift. But I wasn't greeted by a fellow human, instead a Pokemon. Heh... this might actually be the end. There was a rather tall Riolu that rose up just past my thigh, but yet again I was only about five foot two.

My legs started to tremble over the fact that this Pokemon could easily kill me, but he looked just as terrified as me. Well here goes nothing, "uhh... hey there?"

For being a wild Pokemon he seemed way too friendly and the fact he was knocking was already starting to leave a pool of questions. But a voice came from his general direction nearly giving me a heart attack, "hi, I was wondering if there was any chance I could stay here for one single night?"

I looked down at the Riolu completely shocked, and I took a reaction step backwards. But of course my body gave out on me sending me tumbling backwards onto the hard wood floor. The sound of my body connecting with the floor was deafening, and the sudden pain was instantly nullified by the pure adrenaline rush.

But in a only a second, the little Riolu was by my side with his mouth partially cracked open looking shocked himself. And this time I was sure it was him speaking, "I uhh... are you okay?"

That little voice instantly captivated my attention, practically numbing my entire body. "You're not going to hurt me... are you?"

He grabbed my arm, and managed to hoist me upwards in a sitting position, allowing me to stare down the street watching as the street lights sparked on as the final rays of the sun said their last goodbyes. "Of course not. And you are the first person not to instantly shut the door in my face."

I started to laugh lightly to myself, "uhh hey Riolu, can you help me up? I can't really move all that well on my own."

He held his little paw out for me determined to do his best to help me. "You can call me Ri."

Since when did a Pokemon speak English, AND have a nick name?

After a few seconds of awkward struggling, I was back on my feet and clinging onto the half opened door for support. As I closed the door I asked another question, "if you don't mind me asking, where are you heading tomorrow."

The Riolu's posture dropped into a more considerate one, and the glare in his eye shifted positions as he looked up into my eyes with a certain crimson flare. "To be honest I'm not really sure, where ever Arceus guides me to I guess."

A roaming Riolu huh?

"Well make yourself at home then Ri, we don't really have much here but there's enough to live on."

He took my words to heart, and instantly ran over to our couch and sprawled out on a cushion.

"Just give me a sec. I'll be right over." I started to carefully make my way over towards the couch, making sure not to move too quickly or else I would just collapse. But when I pulled my eyes up back up to the couch, he was standing on the cushion looking at me. The sight of the perfectly healthy Riolu looking at me put a tear in my eye, and I wasn't really sure why.

But once again to my surprise, he jumped off of the couch and made his way over to me, instantly reaching up and grabbing my hand with his small paw. I looked down at him with a sense of relief, hell even my own parents don't help me walk around anywhere. However I did notice something rather odd. The little grey bumps that are located on the top of every Riolu's paws simply weren't there.

We reached the couch and I collapsed down on the couch practically exhausted from the short trek. Ri sat down next to me, with his paw still in my hand. I finally declared, "welcome to my home!"

"Thanks for uhh... letting me stay."

"Hey, thanks for helping me back over to the couch."

The Riolu shifted around on the cushion, and our eyes locked onto each other's once again. "So uhh, what's your name?"

I smiled back at his hospitality, "my name is Nicholas, Nick for short, pleased to be talking to a Pokemon."

But out of the blue, he started to cry for no visible reason. So I tried my best to comfort him, by picking him up, and holding him up against my chest while slowly stroking the fur on his back. "Hey now... what's wrong buddy?"

He pulled his head back off of my chest and looked into my eyes. The fur around his eyes were matted down from the tears. "I'm hardly a Pokemon when I don't even fit the normal image." His eyes dropped down to his own paws that were placed on my stomach.

I decided to be empathetic, "who even cares about a perfect image? you can physically speak, I think that's a trait that beats a stupid spike. Just look at me, I can barely walk. But I'm lucky enough to be able to wake up every morning and keep breathing." Jesus, I need to really start taking these words to heart...

He wiped another assaulting tear from his eye and looked back into mine more stable than before. "Heh, you sound like my mom, always trying to make everyone else happy."

Still trying to calm everything down I replied, "sounds like a nice lady."

"Yeah... she and my dad were incredible. They accepted me as their own in a heartbeat."

Oh geeze, he was orphaned? Man... I guess people do have it worse... even Pokemon.

I yawned out while looking at our kitchen clock, "speaking of parents, I have no clue where mine are right now. But I'm gonna take a shower and head off to bed. You can search for some food or something cause I sure as hell can't cook."

Ri laughed out over my declaration against culinary arts and jumped off of my lap letting me stand up.

Of course it took me a few seconds to finally get to my feet, but my determination not to be a couch potato was inspiring, if there was anyone that actually cared...

Slowly but carefully, I made my way into my small bedroom and grabbed a set of more comfortable clothes to change into after my washing. Within a few short minutes, I was locked inside of my small bathroom stripping down ready to take a bath. Man I'm such a coward to the point I call my bath a shower...

I inched over to the rather large tub, and quickly put the plug in to hold the water back. After the tub filled up about three quarters, I very carefully climbed in making sure not to fall in like I typically did. The hot water on my exposed flesh finally put me into a state of serenity, and the fact I could move my legs easier in water was always a small piece of heaven.

But of course I couldn't sit there all day or else I'd just grow gills and really live under the sea. Climbing out of the tub was always the worst part, considering slipping was now three times more possible. Luckily, I managed to plant both my feet on the ground without any errors, man today is actually turning out rather well!

While dressing in my new set of clothing a thought entered my head, a talking Riolu showed up to my door today and didn't judge my inability to walk. This is literally the first friend I've ever had. The door of the bathroom clicked open, and I walked out with a proud grin on my face. But unfortunately this friendship was doomed since he wasn't going to be here the next morning.

I didn't even bother to check the rest of the house, instead I just stumbled back into my room ready to sleep off all the new thoughts. But as I entered the room, things were different. For one, the light was off, and two, the covers on one side of my twin sized bed were pulled back. What's going on here?

Deciding to creep up on the new sight, I quickly discovered that Ri was snuggled up underneath my covers sharing a small part of my pillow. And from what I could tell he was fast asleep judging from the slow, yet consistent movement of the covers.

Well for once my small body size is actually going to pay off. I silently shut the door praying I didn't startle him. But luckily when I turned back, nothing moved.

I took my time reaching the bed, and very carefully slipped into the already set bed. A small crunching sound trickled out from the bed springs, but there was no way to prevent that. I very carefully pulled the covers over top of me, and sure enough I was sleeping in the same bed with a freaking Pokemon.

Oh man my parents are probably gonna kill me for this...

I turned over in the bed so I could check up on Ri one last time before I attempted to sleep. But the sight I was greeted with surprised me. His entire body was twitching, and my heart nearly stopped.

Wasting no time, I quickly grabbed his shoulder and violently shook his body, "hey buddy are you okay!?"

His eyes shot open, and he quickly grabbed my arm with his paw out of reaction from the wake up call. There was a clear look of panic in his eyes, and the moonlight streaming through my window only showed more emotion. I quickly wrapped both of my arms around him, and cradled him side ways in my bed trying to provide as much comfort as possible.

"Ugh... thanks Nick... I hate bad dreams."

I planted a little comforting kiss on his furry forehead, "do you wanna talk about it?"

He clenched my shirt with both of his paws, "it was just a stupid nightmare, nothing really that interesting."

"Well just remember I'm here if you need anything, try to get some sleep alright? You're gonna need it if you plan on making a journey."

*Ri's perspective*

At first this human let me into his home, and now he had no complaint with me in his bed? He... he even kissed me. How can he trust a seemingly random Riolu instantly? And to make things even more confusing, he can't even move well enough to defend himself. I don't get it! Maybe... this is what... no... who I was looking for the entire time?

I closed my eyes, finding comfort in Nick's tight but very warm embrace. Last vision I had was of his smiling face planted next to mine.
