#12 of The Mating Season: A Life of Dreams

Chapter 12

Amrosa eventually announced that she had to continue helping with supper. She, Lea, Julyan, Idella, and Aliona were baking something delicious for that night's meal. She was very excited about the project, especially given that Julyan had an oven - something only the very richest wolves possessed.

Sade decided to go with Amrosa: he whispered to his son that he was going to stick his paw in the cookie jar when no one was looking. Theo laughed and watched as his parents went back inside. After a moment's happy reflection, he looked up to realize he was alone on the bench with Kilyan.

Kilyan was holding little LiAnh by the waist and smiling at the pup as he stood on his father's thighs, straining to balance with pudgy white legs. He giggled and grabbed Kilyan's face, lisping "Daddeeee!" Kilyan nuzzled his nose against LiAnh's.

"You know he was supposed to be a girl?" Kilyan said into the silence. He sat LiAnh on his lap and looked at Theo, not noticing when LiAnh's pudgy fingers grabbed fistfuls of his chest fur.

Theo grinned: Kilyan now had three sons and one daughter. He was aware that Kilyan and Lea had attempted for a girl. They had both agreed that it would be their last attempt . . . and they got LiAnh. It looked as if Wynn was going to have to be the daughter Lea was never going to get.

"His name was going to be Liana," Kilyan went on. He laughed weakly. "Then he came . . . and we added an 'aw' sound at the end." He shrugged. "Turned out weird . . . but unique."

"My dad never wanted a daughter," Theo said, leaning back on the bench. "Just seven sons. Of course, Mom said no way."

Kilyan smiled. "I'm glad to see you made up with Sade. I know things were difficult for you both."

Theo nodded, looking off at the garden and its neat little rows of vegetables. How many times had he watched Julyan with his purple gloves and basket, working in this garden while he read his mother's letters? "Took an entire year for him to come around," Theo said heavily. "Mom would write and tell me that he asked about me or that he was thinking of visiting . . . He pretends like he always accepted my sexuality, but I know that was hard for him." He glanced at Kilyan, who was watching him sympathetically. "I wish he could have been more . . . like you."

"I grew up around tail chasers," Kilyan said, ignoring it when LiAnh flexed pudgy fingers in his mane. LiAnh stood up in Kilyan's lap, grabbed a fistful of his black tresses, and sucked them. Kilyan absently kissed LiAnh's cheek. "I always had it easier when it came to understanding and accepting. But Sade . . ." Kilyan looked off thoughtfully. "Your father grew up in a straight world, in a straight family, and expected his son to be straight." He shrugged, looking at Theo again. "He needed time to accept you. It didn't mean he ever stopped loving you." He smiled.

Theo smiled back. "Thanks . . . sir," he said awkwardly.

Kilyan shook his head. "Not sir. You're my boy now, Theo. You're part of this family. Or maybe you always were." He smiled at Theo almost mistily, and Theo knew he was thinking about having watched him grow up with his sons. "You and Roan . . ." He studied Theo, frowning. "You need to go and talk to him, Theo. About what happened."

Theo nodded, staring at the cobbled walk. "Yeah. My dad said the same thing. I just . . ." Theo glared at a distant tree, his square jaw standing out hard. "He was in bed with another guy!" he cried, holding out his paws.

Kilyan laughed sadly. "But we don't know what happened. Unless you walk in on Roan with some guy's thing in his mouth," Kilyan said with another laugh, "then you should give him the benefit of the doubt. Or your marriage is doomed before you even leave the gate."

Theo swallowed hard and nodded. "It's just so hard. . . . I'm scared all the time." He glanced at Kilyan sheepishly. "Scared he'll find someone better and . . . move on. I mean, do you know how long it took to make him notice me? What if he doesn't want me again? What if he falls in love with some female . . ." Theo stared off, his dark eyes shimmering fear. He didn't see it when Kilyan looked at him sympathetically.

Kilyan reached over and squeezed Theo's shoulder, making the younger male look around at him. "You sound like me," he said fondly. "I spent all my life trying to make Roan's mother notice I was alive. Lea was oblivious - or else didn't care, I can't decide which," he said with a laugh. "Seems like Roan inherited a great deal from his mother."

Theo smiled slowly, his black eyes amused. "So . . . how'd you get Lea to notice you?"

"I fell on her."

Theo laughed. "If only I'd been clumsy."

"The point is," Kilyan went on, pulling LiAnh's pudgy paw from his eye, "I was afraid like you. Lea is beautiful. I wasn't the only male who wanted her. At our mating season, other males came forward, and I fought them. Seeing you fight that captain today . . . it reminded me of my struggle to keep Lea. I was terrified. I never let her know it . . . but I was."

"So what did you do?" Theo wondered miserably.

Kilyan smiled, "I learned to trust her."

Theo's ears pricked forward and he looked at Kilyan.

"I learned to trust that she wasn't going to leave me," Kilyan went on, bouncing a giggling LiAnh on his knee. "I learned to trust that she loved me. Roan loves you, Theo. I know my son - not as well as his mother," he added with a laugh, "but I know him. He's in love. He didn't chase you half across the world for nothing."

Theo smiled, thinking back to that night one year ago when he'd been in a coma. He'd been lost in the darkness, unable to get back, but then he heard Roan's voice, calling out to him, "I came all this way for you, Theo. I love you! Please - wake up!"

"Feel better now?" Kilyan said wisely.

Theo smiled at little LiAnh and tickled his chin, making him giggle. "Yeah. A whole lot better."

"Good. Because if you hurt my baby by walking out on him now . . . I just might have to kill you."

Theo grinned and nodded. "Got it."

"So I guess that means we can talk about grandpups now," Kilyan said at once.

Theo laughed. "You guys are obsessed! My mother couldn't stop talking about it in her letters. She said she was going to look for a female when she came to visit." He rolled his eyes.

"So you want pups?" Kilyan said sharply.

Theo nodded at LiAnh, "There's your pup right there! You don't need any from me!"

Kilyan laughed. "They grow up fast, Theo. One day," he held LiAnh close and kissed his ear, and the pup giggled again, "this little turd will grow up and leave me. Hopefully not the way Roan did," he said, looking down at LiAnh sadly, "but he'll grow up. By that time, I want some grandpups to comfort me, dammit."

Theo rested his elbows on his knees and laughed. "Alright. To be honest . . . Roan and I have . . . discussed it."

"And?"

"Roan wants to be a daddy," Theo said happily. "One day when we're older and less. . . . selfish and stupid."

"Any talk about a mother?"

Theo shook his head. "No."

That was a lie, of course. Roan had sheepishly admitted that he wanted to have a child with Yuri. When his lover first made the confession . . . Theo was angry. And jealous. But he hid his envy well - or at least he thought he did. After a week of cold kisses and frosty smiles, Roan finally cornered Theo about his strange behavior. Theo admitted that he didn't want Roan to have sex with Yuri. Ever. And they never spoke of it again. Thinking of it now, he felt a thrill of guilt.

"Well," Kilyan sighed, "I'm sure you'll find someone. These things have a way of working themselves out." He grinned at LiAnh and lifted the sleepy pup above his head. LiAnh awoke at once, kicking and giggling. "This little guy needs his nap before supper." He glanced at the pink and purple sky. "It's getting late. Come on."

Theo nodded. They rose from the bench and went back into the house.

Theo was surprised to see Zaldon sitting on the couch between Lynny and Kel: Roan must have been doing well. Keeno and his relative with the red and green arrows were sitting on the couch opposite with Zalia. Zalia had her head on Keeno's shoulder and looked saddened and irritated by the conversation going on in the room. Keeno had his arm along the back of the couch and dropped his paw every now and then to play in Zalia's mane.

"I still say," Lynny boomed, dark eyes exasperated, "that the summer wolves are no better than us when it comes to tail chasers - pass me that bottle, Zaldy."

Zaldon's ears flattened and he frowned. "No, you've had enough."

Lynny scowled. "Pass me that bottle, Ohana!"

Ohana laughed. "Nice try, Dad."

Ohana was at the window with a glass of wine, and it took Theo a moment to realize all the adults were drinking some.

Loryn and Kira shared a cushioned chair. Kira was in Loryn's lap, and they were also sharing a wine glass. She took a sip when Loryn offered it to her, then rested her head on his shoulder. He rubbed her arm, his strong legs spread wide beneath her as he listened to the conversation. Seeing Theo, he smiled and lifted his glass.

Wynn and Inden were on deerskins near the fire. Inden looked complacent enough, but Wynn was watching the adults and sulking. Theo almost laughed: Wynn wanted some wine. Inden was sitting with his legs stretched toward the fire, and Wynn flopped down, laying her head on his lap. She closed her eyes, and looking down at her as she fell asleep, Inden stroked her mane.

Mio and Zee, meanwhile, were curled up beside the fire near Wynn and Inden, sleeping peacefully in its gentle glow. One of their mothers sat beside them, but Zane's wives were so identical, Theo couldn't tell which one she was. Probably Nyssa. No doubt Mora was in the kitchen with the others preparing supper.

Theo glanced around the room and noticed some family members were still missing, however. Zane was no where to be seen. Neither was Yuri or the boy with all the white tattoos.

Kilyan gave Theo a friendly clap on the shoulder before going to the fire, where he gently laid LiAnh to rest with his tiny nephews. The three pups curled up together, and Nyssa said "Awww, look at that!" when Mio snuggled up to LiAnh and nuzzled his nose in his neck.

Kilyan lovingly smoothed his paw over Zee's dark mane, smiled at Wynn and Inden, then went to the window to stand with Ohana. Theo saw him smooth his big paw up Ohana's back and under her long mane. She smiled at her husband and tipped her wine glass to his lips.

". . . won't happen because of the Sion Law," Kel was saying adamantly. "I'm telling you, Hris." He sipped from his glass and didn't notice when Zaldon smiled at him fondly.

Sitting on the couch opposite, Keeno's relative with the red tattoos shook his head. "I don't care what you say, Kel. I'm not letting Yaholo visit the summer village! End of discussion."

Yzlo was standing behind Hye's chair with his paws on her shoulders. He shook his head.

"Ha!" Loryn lifted his glass at the apparent Hris. "Yaholo will be seventeen in a year. Try stopping him then!"

General laughter.

Hris relented, smiling sadly. "It's my fault. He begged to come with me, I let him, and now he wants to see the whole damn world! His mother is gonna scratch our eyes out when we get home."

Kel laughed hoarsely. "Let him see the world, Hris. I . . . made some mistakes as a parent," he said, looking at Kilyan, "that I am not proud of."

"Dad . . ." Kilyan moaned. He was still at the window and stood with his paw on the small of Ohana's back.

Theo smiled when he saw Zaldon carefully pry Kel's glass from his paw: Kel had had too much to drink. Theo knew from experience that Kel got emotional whenever he drank too much: at his wedding to Enya only the year before, Kel got drunk and gave an embarrassing toast where he cried at the end, begging Enya and Theo to please take care of each other. He immediately retched after. Zaldon had to carry him home.

"What's the Sion Law anyway?" Nyssa wondered, looking at the older wolves with curious dark eyes.

Keeno cleared his throat. "The Sion Law," he said, glancing anxiously at Zalia (who Theo noticed was getting visibly upset), "states that wolves accused of crimes must stand trial before the council."

"Basically," added Kilyan from the window, "you can't get marked as a lone wolf unless someone caught you in the act - or there's solid proof. The downside is criminals have a chance to go free. But at least the innocent are never marked now --"

"Shut up!" Zalia erupted. Everyone stared, concerned, as she leapt suddenly from the couch. "Stop talking about him!"

"Zalia . . ." Keeno said dismally.

Theo was astonished when Zalia smacked her husband's paw off and went right out the front door. Keeno leapt after her but it slammed in his face. He glanced around the room apologetically before following his wife out. Over on the couch . . . Kel stared miserably at his lap.

"She'll be alright, Kel," Zaldon said, rubbing Kel's shoulder.

Kel shook his head. "We've been saying that . . . for twenty-six years." He rose quietly and went after Keeno and Zalia.

Zaldon sighed and exchanged a glance with Lynny.

"The lone wolf tradition is shit anyway," Lynny said darkly. Somehow, he had managed to get his paws on the wine bottle and took a long swig straight from it.

The room was quiet and almost tense in the wake of Zalia's outburst. Theo couldn't understand it, but he was sure he didn't want to understand it. Enya's parents had always been prone to such arguments during family gatherings - especially the time when Keeno got drunk and groped some girl at a festival.

Gradually, the conversation picked up again when Loryn made a joke. Everyone laughed and fell to talking. Theo was wondering where Enya was when she entered from the kitchen.

"Finally decided to go and look in on Roan!" Enya scolded the moment she saw Theo.

Theo cleared his throat guiltily. "You should go after your parents. Your mother's upset and your dad ran after her --"

"What else is new?" Enya said, rolling her eyes. She scowled. "Go and see your boyfriend! Before I chase you up there!"

Theo noticed for the first time that Enya was holding a pawful of knives and other cutlery. "Yes, ma'am!" he said, shaking with mock fear.

Enya rolled her eyes and dropped the silverware in a bowl she'd been carrying: ah, she had been assigned the task of setting the table. "Just go," she said, smirking, "and don't take too long up there. Your supper will get cold." She strutted past Theo, curls bouncing softly, hips swaying, and breasts riding. She was heading for the dinning room, which branched off the sitting room and was lined with many floor-length windows.

Theo watched Enya walking away a moment and inhaled her hot scent with sudden longing. He'd never had any interest in females before her. Enya was the first girl he ever thought about sex with, and he hated himself for thinking about it now.

Pushing his lusty thoughts away, Theo went up the stairs, wondering if Roan was still awake. Magical healing could be very painful - especially sorcery. Sometimes the healing was so intense, it put the invalid to sleep.

Theo knew which guestroom Roan would be in and he was right. He walked into the guestroom Roan had slept in for a year while living with Zaldon, and his lover was there, in the bed, sitting up and staring out the window.

The room was small and shadowy in the faint evening light. While living with Zaldon, Theo had spent the past year sneaking in this room to be with Roan. In the middle of the night, he would slip in Roan's bed and fuck him so slowly, so sweetly . . . And they would whisper all night of love and promise to never, never let go. Looking at Roan now, however, Theo just felt angry. Angry and horny. He forced himself to look at the window as he took a seat on the edge of the bed. Why did Roan have to be so beautiful?

"Zaldon says it'll be stiff and slow for a long time," Roan said after a long pause. His voice was soft as ever, though now he sounded hesitant . . . and guilty. Theo glowered.

There was a large mirror on the wall opposite the bed, and Roan was reflected in it. Even while he was trying not to look at his lover . . . Theo was forced to look at his lover. He silently cursed the mirror, thinking of all the times he'd made love to Roan and watched their reflections, watched their strong young bodies twisting on the sheets. The mirror had been a wedding gift to Julyan from his sister Ceara. Julyan hated the thing, however, so he left it in a guestroom.

"I'll have problems using any weapons . . ." Roan went on, his voice more and more dismal. ". . . and I should probably stay off patrol for some months . . . which is funny, because I was gonna quit anyway . . . Theo? Please look at me . . ."

Theo couldn't stand the sadness in Roan's voice. He looked at him and his heart melted. Roan was sitting up, sculpted chest bare with the sheets over his lap. His arm was no longer in the sling and his long black mane was loose around the flexing flesh of his neck and collarbone. Theo swallowed hard, wanting to kiss that flexing flesh.

"We need to talk about . . ." Roan sighed and his long lashes lowered a moment. When they lifted again, his green eyes were pleading. "It wasn't what it looked like."

Theo swallowed hard again, swallowed his anger. "Then what was it?" he said, trying to remain calm.

Roan winced a little to hear the growl in Theo's voice, but he looked at him steadily and patiently. "Hukida was kind to me. He became my friend. He wanted me and I said no."

Theo snorted. "I know you, Roan. Maybe you didn't let him . . . make love to you. But something happened. He sure looked happy!" He flexed his aching knuckles, remembering the captain's bloody teeth after he punched him. "He'll remember me for a long time, won't he?" he said darkly. "The guy who bloodied his face."

"You didn't have to hurt him!" Roan scolded. "I know what it probably looked like to you and I'm sorry --"

"You're dancing around answering me!" Theo accused, but he sounded almost amused. "Tell me what you did with him so I can . . ." His chest heaved.

"So you can what?" Roan said, shaking his head. He folded his arms. "Haul off and go crazy again? Break the furniture?"

"The furniture is safe," Theo vowed and lifted his paws.

Roan looked unconvinced, but realizing that there was no getting around it - and that he owed it to Theo to be honest - he took a breath and began his confession. "You know how I've always been . . . worried about . . ."

"Sucking my dick," Theo finished for him. His eyes went blank as he realized. He scowled. "You sucked that guy's --"

"You promised you wouldn't get angry!" Roan accused. His face darkened, and Theo sheepishly bit his lip and fell silent.

"I wanted him to teach me," Roan went on miserably, "because I was afraid I'd never be able to please you in bed! Theo . . ." he reached over and smoothed his paw over Theo's. "I want our marriage to last forever! I don't want you to leave me because I can't make love to you . . . I know there are better males out there, many better males --"

Theo laughed incredulously. "Roan!"

Roan blinked, startled.

Theo touched his face. "I would never leave you for something like that! I might leave you for fucking another guy, though!"

Roan looked at him guiltily. "I'm sorry, Theo."

"How could you think . . .?" Theo shook his head. He sighed. "Come here, Roan . . ."

Roan smiled and obeyed. He crawled to the edge of the bed and knew Theo was looking at his hanging cock. He saw the hunger in Theo's eyes, and when they were sitting side by side, he noticed that Theo's cock had stiffened the slightest bit.

Theo put his arm around Roan and held him close. Roan smiled when he kissed his cheek.

"How could you think that, baby? I wouldn't leave you over that! You could have come to me about it. I could have taught you to please me --"

"I wanted to learn and surprise you."

"Well, mission accomplished: you surprised me, babe. My knuckles won't thank you."

"You didn't have to hit him."

"Yes, I did! I thought you were in danger, I thought you were gone! And you're there, in some guy's arms --"

"Theo, calm down. You're getting angry!" Roan smoothed is paw up Theo's hard thigh and watched his muscles straining. He looked at Theo with doting green eyes. "On second thought, don't stop. It's kinda hot."

Theo laughed hollowly. "I was really scared." He kissed Roan hard on the cheek, above the eye, on the head.

Roan smiled under the kisses. "I know. I'm sorry."

"I thought my whole world was over. I . . . I didn't know how I was going to get through losing you."

"I'm right here, Theo. Everything's fine --"

"You're not going back on patrol," Theo said adamantly.

Roan smiled and shook his head. Theo had no idea, but he could be as bossy and controlling as his father. Sade often bossed Amrosa around - sometimes to the point of bullying her - but all because he believed he was protecting her. Sometimes, Theo was more like Sade than he realized.

"Theo --"

"I can't let this happen again."

"But I want to go back."

"What!"

Roan frowned. "Now that I've seen the sort of dangers wolves face here, I want to protect them!"

Theo looked at his lover fondly. "Oh, Roan . . ."

"I do! I want to keep the slavers from entering the city! I want --"

"As soon as your arm feels better," Theo said firmly. "Not a second before. I wish you'd change your mind. I wish you'd just stay at home, let me care for you, be my wifey . . ."

Roan laughed. "You keep forgetting this is the sun village, Theo. Even if I was female, I could still join the patrol."

Theo sighed. "I wish I could stop you," he whispered, kissing Roan tenderly on the lips. "I wish I could lock you away and keep you safe . . ." His paw went to Roan's dark cock and gently fondled.

"Y-You're not mad anymore?" whispered Roan, breathless as he started to get hard.

"Never suck another guy's dick again!"

Roan laughed. "I promise."

They smiled at each other. Theo began kissing Roan, backing him down on the bed, and Roan knew what was about to happen.

"Mm . . . oh, baby . . . I missed you so much . . ."

Theo's kisses trailed down Roan's chest and belly. Roan lay on his back, watching with a thudding heart as Theo kissed his thigh. He closed his eyes. His legs were over the side of the bed, and Theo was kneeling between them. He rolled his tongue against Roan's soft cock and it stiffened against his belly almost instantly. Theo's tongue didn't stop.

"Mm . . . mm, Roan . . ."

Roan shivered when Theo sniffed and licked his balls.

"I missed your smell . . ."

"Theo . . . oh. . . ." Roan melted when Theo's hot tongue bathed his balls. Softly and gently, Theo licked him, while his skilled fingers caressed his anus and the tender place between anus and balls. Hukida had taught Roan to massage that place while giving head, and now Theo was doing it to him - with a skill that had always left him burning for more after he had come.

Slowly and carefully, Theo rolled his tongue on Roan again, then devoured him in long, wet sucks. Roan cried out as Theo's hot mouth ravished him. He looked down, breathless and blushing, to see Theo looking right at him as he sucked him off. Their eyes connected, and Roan felt himself throbbing thicker in Theo's mouth. In the mirror behind Theo, his muscular back was reflected, his hard backside, his low tail and his muscular thighs as he knelt between Roan's legs. Roan looked at Theo's reflection and almost erupted.

Theo's dark pretty eyes smiled. He continued the slow assault on Roan's cock and balls, licking and caressing, his spit hot, his fingers firm, until Roan sputtered and came. His fingers curled in the sheets as he listened to Theo swallowing. His chest was heaving when Theo trailed wet kisses up it. He kissed Roan's cheek and whispered on top of him, "Mine. All mine!"

Roan laughed. "All yours, Theo." He put his arms around his neck, and they rubbed noses.

"Supper is re - oh."

Roan and Theo looked up, and Roan blushed as his father came barging through the door. Kilyan halted, and Roan couldn't understand why he smiled to see Theo on top of his son. He should have been mortified, embarrassed! But he gave Theo a thumbs up instead!

"Dad!" Roan cried, humiliation complete.

Theo laughed and eased off Roan. He helped him up and they went to the door.

"So the wedding is still on," Kilyan said happily. He clapped the boys on their shoulders and grinned at them. "Good. Come on down to dinner. Yuri is going to be late coming back. She, Zane, and Yaholo went to pick up the rings."

"Oh yeah," Theo said, glancing at Roan guiltily. "I was gonna do that today."

Roan rubbed his arm. "It's not your fault, sweetie."

"I wanted to show you," Theo insisted. "I went through so much trouble to have yours custom made. With little diamonds."

Roan gasped. "Diamonds!"

"Oh great," Kilyan said wearily. "Now his mother is gonna want diamonds. As well as every female downstairs."

Theo laughed.

"Come on," Kilyan said. "Let's go down. Ohana is dying to go over the seating arrangements with you, Roan."

Roan moaned.

Kilyan turned out the door. Roan was about to follow when Theo playfully grabbed his tail. He turned to find his lover smiling at him. He jerked Roan close and kissed him in a sudden frenzy on the lips, curling his fingers in his mane, smoothing his paws over his hard backside. When their lips broke apart, they were breathless and weak. Roan hugged Theo's neck and dropped his forehead against his.

"I love you, Roan," Theo whispered against his lips. "Never forget that. Please."

"I promise," Roan whispered and suddenly kissed Theo hard . . . with a passion that spoke of his love more than words ever could.
