Among the ready...
Short story description, Poetry, Poem, slice of life
Among the ready...
(Written watching "Saving Private Ryan")
The boat swaying to & fro
The sky fogged by smoke
All eyes are darting between each other, we all know we might go
Once the door falls, some, maybe all will be gone, a few tell a final joke
Pings of life & death hit the sides of the ship
Open air above, eyes fixated on the front, worry circles from the rocking motion, with each large dip
A light show around us, some filled with fear of becoming a part
For the greater good, our reasoning, we keep hope close to heart
A sudden stop, brief instruction, &'the chains begin to fall
A picture worth lifetimes, passes, & more take to the call
Scattered among the shore line are brothers in arms, friends, family
Shots hit close taking others before they step on sand, others run, returning the fight, all forgetting there humanity
In this day, for more to come, there is no definition for sanity
Twenty or so struggle for cover behind metal ruins smaller than a man
Others move forward, beyond the fallen, doing what they can
Hundreds of boats, hundreds more to show throughout the day
Some will leave there dreams here, others will, by another, or the sea, get carried away
Sound is unheard between the few across the shore
Everyone aiming for silence, with each shot, everyone asking for more
Numbers unneeded, the red sea glistens with such a horrid sight
Never ending is this day, how we all pray for night
As the hours pass, we gain ground & push back the ones who don't agree
We move on, securing the place where so many fought for others, at home, to be free
A camera shaking, tears held by anger & fright
A picture only shows so much, but enough needed, to remember why, we try to give all, still, it shows a dark reminder in daylight
Till we leave home, & settle what was taken
Fight on, in war, we believe in others, always, truly, no "one" is mistaken
