My upload for the Short Story Summer Contest. My longest upload so far, so I hope you all enjoy.

One of those rare perfect summer days in Nebraska. That's today. The lake is calm, there is little wind and the people are at the beach. Everyone is paranoid, though.

The year is 3147. About half the population of the world has turned into anthro animals, and has recently declared equality to all. Some anthros and some humans have even has some power. Like flying, invisibility, and super speed. But, someone didn't like what was going on. The mad scientist (and I mean MAD) Elson Brown created a creature to kill all the anthros. The genetic programming went wrong and the creatures attacked and killed him and his human assistants. After that, the creatures reproduced and escaped, attacking anyone within sight.

That is where the Powers come in. They saw that almost nothing could stop them, except their evolutionary powers. The most powerful set up a school to train people in unlocking their power. Most aren't cut up for it. I was though.

My name is Chase, Power codename Velox. I can manipulate water and ice, and make melee weapons out of ice. And I'm the only Power that can switch from human to anthro. No one knows about this ability, so I have to be careful with it. As for my anthro species, I'm a white cheetah anthro.

So I'm at the beach that day with my family. Basically a little vacation. It's spring break after all. I'm relaxing on the beach watching Tyler, my brother and also a Power, play in the water with a tube. It looked fun, but I was tired from yesterday's mission. Tyler and I were taking out a hive of creatures in a town nearby. When we finished, we called Mom and Dad to come here to the lake. Our first family outing in 2 years. It was great. During that time, I expected Swift Academy (our school) to send out a new mission for us. Ty and I are a great team. I sent a vacation message, so they may have taken that into consideration. Everything was perfect right now.

Until a shark creature tried to attack Tyler. He sensed it and swam away from the tube fast, right before the creature (I'll call them creeps) closed its jaws around the inner tube. Everyone escaped the water immediately. I raced up to stand by Tyler.

"Damn waterborne Creeps. I thought we would get a peaceful weekend," said Tyler.

"We could always count on them to give us more jobs and missions," I said.

"That's for sure. The school gives us sucky missions anyway."

"Right. I'll freeze the portion of lake. You get your famous scythe made. And be quick this time."

"Uhhh. Fine! I'll be here shortly." He leaves to get his weapon. We are known as Team Icy Scythe. 100% completeness on missions. Practically the top team in the world. Amazing how I'm 18 and he is 17.

I start freezing the lake. Luckily everyone is gone so no bystanders are here. A minute later, Tyler arrives. About that time, the lake is frozen.

"Where were you?" I asked sarcastically.

"Admiring hot babes. Hope you don't mind," he also said sarcastically.

"Never mind, lets find this creep."

We shift into our battle attire. Me in a white shirt, black track pants, and sneakers. Topping it off is a blue Assassin's Creed jacket I got off a website. Not much, I know. I am a bit stubborn. Ty has the steel armor chestplate with a black undershirt with same track pants and sneakers.

If you haven't guessed, his power is metal bending. Thus making a new scythe to leave as our mark wherever we succeed. That I have to freeze it, leaving icicles. Our mark was his idea.

We see the creep on the ice and it starts to grow arms and legs?

"What the hell is it doing?" Tyler asks.

"I don't know. Maybe it becomes amphibian when on land. You have the ice spikes on your shoes, right?"

"Do you have to ask?" Ty said, practicing blows to the air with his scythe.

"Good point. I guess now would be a good time to say break the ice."

"Got it." He jumped high into the air. As he neared the ice, he swung with his weapon, and created an ever growing crack headed toward the creep. It tried to jump to the side, but the crack was too fast. It fell in the crack and I closed it, effectively disabling its legs.

"That should do it. Let's slice him up," Tyler said very excitedly. Something was bothering me though. Creeps usually hunt in pairs or more.

"Then where is the other?" I thought out loud.

"What?"

"Don't Creeps hunt in pairs or more?"

"Shit!" We move our backs together. I form a vendetta out of ice. A vendetta is 2 swords that combine into a staff. My signature weapon. We look around to find the creep. After a minute, nothing happened.

Then an impulse made Ty and me jump away. A second later, the creep emerged from the ice, right where we were standing. The last creep was 12 feet tall. This one was easily 40 feet. Unlike the other, this creep had huge spikes as a sword on each arm. How no one noticed these two in the lake was beyond me.

The lake must be deep, I thought.

"Where was that one hiding?" Tyler asked.

"I don't know. But we need to kill it before it becomes a huge threat. Try the same plan again."

He jumped, crack formed, the Creep didn't fall into the crack since he is huge. Definitely not according to plan.

"That didn't work. Looks like we have to do this the old fashion way. Classic beatdown!" Tyler yelled, swinging his scythe around. I did the same with my vendetta. Then it charged, swinging at me with a right hook. Swiftly dodging, I jump aside while Ty flanks the creep and gets several hits on the creep before running back. It reacted as anyone would expect, but it doesn't seem as it's losing health.

"It's not slowing down," Ty said.

"This one is a lot tougher. We have to go harder," I said.

The creep attacked me. I blocked one arm, but the other came after that. I dodged and flew back as the shockwave of punch hitting the ground hit me.

I landed badly and was stunned for a second. I looked up and saw Tyler holding one arm back and see the second arm moving for the killing blow.

I used my speed from my cheetah form to reach Tyler and block it. I barely got there in time. Then it used its tail to knock Ty and me back to the ground.

"It's too tough!" I said.

The creep lunges, and a huge fireball plows into it, knocking it back to his trapped friend.

A female red fox lands near us, hands still steaming, red and white tail wagging very slowly. She was hot! I'm not going to lie. In looks and temperature (kinda obvious there).

She was wearing one of those shirts with the frills on the arms, and middle-thigh jean shorts. No shoes, because anthros don't need shoes. FootLocker almost went out of business because of it.

She looked back at us. "You are Shifters. Why haven't you shifted yet?"

First, I was surprised she knew what I was. When I concentrated, I was able to tell that she was, in fact, a "Shifter."

Second, that Ty was a Shifter. We met eye contact after that realization.

"You are one?" asked Tyler.

"Yeah. I thought I was the only one," I said with a bit of shame.

"Well, lets shift and show our other form. We owe each other that much." He always was the more positive one, and this shows it. So we shifted.

Tyler was a golden eagle. Behind him was a pair of golden brown wings flexing for some air time, and tail feathers. In place of his sneakers were the normal eagle feet and talons.

"That would have been great help with that pterodactyl creep a month ago," I said.

"I am always prepared to shift if we are in trouble. We are skilled, so we are never in trouble," Ty said.

"Touche."

"Now if you are done socializing, I need help over here," the fox said. She pulled out a spear and a shield for the fight. During our shift, the big creep pulled out the little creep from the crack.

"Okay. Lets take out the smaller one first. By the way, I don't think I got your name," I said walking to her side.

"Jade."

"Nice name, but lets get to action," Tyler said, reaching us.

Both creeps charge. I freeze the legs of the bigger one, so it doesn't interfere with our slaughter of the small one. It swings, oblivious to the freezing of the other. Tyler stops it in its tracks, while Jade and I flank and attack the sides. The creep then notices the absence of it friend and tries to turn back to the other. Tyler sees this and jumps above the creep while it's turned away and slices the weak spot at the back of the neck. It falls lifeless back to the ice.

"One down, another to go," Ty said.

"Come on man, lets finish this last one," I said, hoping to get back to my vacation.

By that time the creep has escaped the ice shackles and is charging toward us. Tyler tries to stop it, but gets blown back by the unnatural force. More blocking would be required.

"Jade!" I yelled.

"What?"

"When it charges again, join Tyler in stopping it."

"Got it," she said right as it charged again.

I throw my vendetta as a spear and it hits near the eye. It roars in pain and charges faster. My plan was to tire it by doing exactly that, have Ty and Jade block and stop it, while I jump for the killing blow. I form a Final Fantasy like sword out of ice, ready for my role. The creep doesn't slow down as he rams the pair, stopping in its tracks as well. It's Go Time. I jump, swinging my sword around, getting the feel for it, getting in position, and falling with little possible air resistance. It connects, and I feel it go through the spine, the trachea, and back out. I jump back to Jade and Tyler. We watch as the creep basically have the equivalent of a seizure. The ice cracks from this movement, and I sense that the ice will crush us if we don't get out of there. I manipulate the ice to launch us back to the beach, without warning the other two. They were pissed in the minute afterwards.

We land on the beach not horribly, but somewhat bad. We were all panting from the battle. And then I said with a huge grin,

"Soooo, what are you guys doing tomorrow?"
