Note from the author: None of these events are based off reality any situations or persons bearing a resemblance to real life are purely coincidence.

Edit: There is a very small change in the scene with the social worker. While discussing plot with my husband today we struck something that I forgot to mention in the original scene. It's a minor change and doesn't mean anything to the current story but may have bearing on things that happen much later in the kits lives.

"There is only one set of twins in the database my Lord, Grey rabbits, but I don't think you'll want them." The smaller wolf looked up from his monitor to the larger wolf sitting opposite him.

A frown appeared between the black wolf's eyes, "I don't pay you to think, Gavin. I pay you for results. Grey you said, show me." He stood up and moved around behind the smaller grey wolf and leaned over his shoulder to look at the monitor.

Gavin quickly pulled up the relevant photographs, but again tried to voice his concerns to his employer. "Here they are but Sir I really think..." He was silenced by the menacing growl in his employer's throat.

On the screen were two of the prettiest rabbits, grey yes, but with darker grey curls and markings around the eyes in black that looked like makeup. They smiled for the camera, identical in every visible way, with big chocolate brown eyes and soft looking well kept fur. "Perfect, they will do nicely. How old did you say they are?" The larger wolf stood from his stooped position and walked back around the desk heading for the office door. The two girls he'd just seen would be perfect, young, pretty, good students with no record of emotional or behavioral problems, yes they would do nicely.

Gavin frowned a little more, "Fourteen my lord, but--" again the larger wolf cut him off.

"Just process the paperwork Gavin, and don't keep me waiting." He collected his jacket and the cane he carried them with him, pausing at the door long enough to look at his subordinate. "I expect them to be here within the week Gavin, don't disappoint me." Then he was gone.

For a moment the grey wolf stared after his lord and master, then he looked again at the smiling young faces on the monitor. His ears drooped as he pulled up their file once more. Speaking to no one but himself he muttered, "I did try to tell him..." Seeing no alternative he tapped in the required information and transferred the fees to the correct agency. Once that was done he went back for one more look at the happily smiling kits. "Poor things have no idea what's in store for them." He shook his head as he closed down the programs before he headed out to join his lover for lunch.

"Lyris and Lyal Ruthchild." The pudgy looking officious little chipmunk said glancing up over the edge of the file at the two rabbits sitting opposite her desk.

The girl broke in, "Actually Miss its Ruthschild. There is a typo in our last name it should have an 's' between the 'h' and the 'c'. We've told any number of social workers but it's still not been corrected."

Gladis looked through the paper work once more then nodded slowly. "That explains the hand written notes on some of these forms. I'll make sure to change it as soon as I get back to my office. Will that suit you?"

When they nodded in unison she looked back at the file. "Fourteen, been here for two years, no family to speak of, no history of disobedience, good grades, honor roll both of you. Alright everything looks in order. Did you have any questions before we start?" She set the folder down and looked at the brother and sister.

The twins had been through this several times over the last two years, they'd gotten pretty good at breaking in a new case worker. "No Miss," they said in unison, and waited for whatever she was planning to tell them.

Snorting at their near synchronicity Gladis shook her head. "Well it looks as if my first meeting with you is going to be my last." She paused to smile at them for a moment before continuing, "Seems a nice wolf couple has decided to adopt you." She watched the pair before her carefully; this was always the best part of her job, telling her charges that someone wanted them, that they'd be out of the system and in their own home. She was rarely disappointed in their reactions.

It took a few moments for her words to sink in, then the rabbits looked at each other, their ears moving in that unfathomable way that rabbits had of communicating with each other. When they turned back to look at her they wore identical radiant smiles and looked as if it was taking all their will not to jump for joy. "You mean it Miss?" Lyris, at least she thought it was the girl, asked her in a hushed tone, "someone really wants us both?"

Trying to keep her face stern the chipmunk again looked through the papers making them wait a moment while she double checked the information. "That's what it says here, paperwork stresses that it's both of you not just one or the other." The corner of her lip twitched up as they bounced off their chairs and hugged each other tightly. Now came the shouts and the laughter and the silly dancing around that she'd been expecting. She sat back in her chair and watched them with a pleased smile on her lips. Now if only they could find homes for the other hundred or so teens in this facility...

The kits had never flown before, they'd had no idea what to expect when they were taken to the airport a mere two days later and put onto a private jet. They were dressed in matching uniforms: grey blazers over white shirts with red ties, she had a grey and red plaid skirt that came down to just above her knees and he a darker charcoal grey pair of trousers. Both had on white socks and black shoes though his tied and hers had a strap over the top of her foot. The clothing was something supplied by the agency and didn't fit as well as it could but at least they'd look presentable when they arrived at their new home. The captain of the jet introduced himself and his copilot as well as the steward that would be seeing to their every need while they were in the air.

After takeoff, the steward came out with food and drinks for them. They hardly spoke a word as they gobbled down better food than they had tasted in years, and drinking down the sweet tasting soda that was a rare treat. When they were finished eating they held hands and stared out the window at the ground passing away beneath them, after a while they both felt drowsy and before they knew it they were fast asleep leaning against each other.

"Seems a shame really," the steward commented to the pilot and copilot when he delivered their coffee. "They are both so cute and innocent."

The Pilot looked over his shoulder at the other man and frowned. "It's saying that kind of thing that got the last steward retired, you might want to think about that before you open your mouth again." There was a slight stress on the word retired that bore a warning with it.

Without another word the Steward went back to his section of the plane and did his best to forget he'd ever seen the two rabbits sleeping in the big chairs at the back of the passenger compartment.

When they landed the steward roughly shook the kits awake, doing his best to keep from getting attached to them by maintaining a professional distance. "We're here." He moved back when the boy rubbed at his eyes and let him wake his sister.

"Lyris, come on Lyss wake up." He gently coaxed his sleeping sister to wakefulness and grinned at her. "Come on we're almost there." They rose together and holding hands disembarked the jet to find a limousine waiting for them with the driver holding the door open. Squealing in joy they took off running hand in hand toward the car while the steward watched stoically from the doorway.

Another indeterminate time later they were drowsing, snuggled together nearly asleep when the car slowed down and started to turn. Lyris looked up, then shook Lyal's shoulder. "Oh my god Ly, look!" The two grey bunnies crowded close to the window peering at the huge building whose drive they were pulling into. It was a large imposing structure, made of a dark stone that gave it the look of a castle. Another limousine sat in the circular drive, which their car pulled up behind. "Where are we?"

Since neither of the kits knew the answer none was forth coming. As the car came to a halt they pulled back from the window looking at each other, this was so exciting! They were prepared to do anything that their new parents wanted of them in order to please them. The door opened and Lyris was the first one out, shaking her skirt and making sure she looked presentable before she moved aside to let her brother out of the car. Lyal stretched slowly as he got out, standing after being forced to sit for so long was heaven.

They looked up at the large building clutching their backpack straps tighter in their paws even as they reached for each other, fingers twining together. They both took deep breaths and walked up the stairs toward the large doors; before they reached the portal there was a ponderous creaking sound as the huge oaken panels swung inward.

"Welcome to Redclaw Manor." The stiff looking badger spoke with a slight English accent that made both the kits want to giggle. He stood through their laughter, waiting until they had calmed themselves then gestured further into the house. "If you will come this way I'll show you to your rooms, where you may freshen up before meeting the lady of the house." He waited for them to move out of the doorway before closing the large portal behind them.

They followed the badger in a hushed kind of awe their eyes wide and staring around as if to memorize every detail of the building in which they now found themselves. It was huge as the outside promised; the main hall was three stories high with a curving staircase that split along the back to run up either side wall to the third level. Everything was spotless, polished until it shone like the sun. Small tables to either side of the large space lined the walls holding copper urns of white roses, and little knickknacks. There were two visible doors leading off the room on the main level, one on either side of the front entrance in the side walls, the staircase lead to a set of double doors in the second floor and then to a pair of balcony that ran the length of the side walls and had many doors off them on the third floor.

They were lead up and through the second floor doorway, to the left down a corridor that was lined with more doors, all the way to the far end, which seemed a fair distance from the main entrance. "These will be your rooms while you are here." He indicated the last and second to last, doors on the right which would put them closest to the driveway and the front of the house. The first of the large oak doors opened and the bunnies stepped inside followed by the butler.

This room was obviously meant for a girl, the delicate furniture and the pink and white color scheme, which could have made it too froufrou and childlike, came together in a beautiful melding that screamed femininity. The room was dominated by a large (king size?) four poster canopy bed, with mountains of pillows on it. To one side stood a dresser that looked like it took up half the wall, with a vanity table and small bench before it. Shelving bracketed the door they had come through (those sliding pocket doors that Lyris had always dreamed of having one day) covered in books and small items that she was just dying to poke her fingers into and discover what secrets they kept hidden. There were a few stuffed animals, obviously not the playing with kind but the looking at kind, on stands and in various poses about the room with china dolls as their companions. In one corner of the room was even a small dining table with two chairs for those moments when she felt like having a private meal to herself or possibly with just one guest. Lyris couldn't contain the squeal of joy that escaped her lips it was all just so perfect!

The wall that should be the barrier between her room (Oh yes this was her room!) and Lyal's had two doors in it, the butler went to the first and opened it onto a walk in closet fully as large as the rooms they had been forced to share with thee other kits back at the home, girls and boys kept separate of course. Inside this closet was a treasure trove of clothing and shoes and purses and other little things that would all combine to make outfits more perfect than she had ever seen in her life. The second door in that wall when opened revealed a bathroom, it held the most luxurious marble tub and two separate showers(?), as well as another vanity that seemed littered with bottles of perfumes and soaps and shampoos in all fragrances, colors and shapes. The whole room gleamed white in the harsh overhead lights.

The kits were so overwhelmed by the sights before them that they missed the first of the butler's comment "...expected to share." He walked on through the bathroom and threw open a second set of doors that lead into the other bedroom. As they followed him dutifully a sinking feeling hit them both in the stomach. Lyal looked confused at first then shook his head and folded his arms over his slender chest. The second room was identical to the first, done in pale purple and white, but with all the same feminine touches that made the first room so appealing to Lyris.

The butler betrayed no sign of discomposure when he looked at the two of them. But inside he was seething, the whole staff had been told to expect two girls, they'd been working on these rooms for weeks waiting for the promised arrival of their new charges and here the kits where, one the girl so longed for, the other... it was unfair to be upset with the boy, it was hardly his fault. Still he might prove distracting to their lord all the same, one could never tell with these things.

Lyal took a slow deep breath and plastered a smile on his face that only Lyss knew was false. "Oh wow! This is a huge room and I do love purple."

Lyris moved up behind him and placed her hand on his shoulder, "Ly, I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding..."

To his credit the boy simply nodded and placed his hand on hers where it rested on his shoulder. "I know Lyss, the same one that has been happening since we were babies. It'll get sorted out." He turned back to the Butler and politely asked, "How long before the lady of the house will see us?"

The badger's estimation of the kits rose as he watched the exchange, nodding slightly at the boy's acceptance of the situation. "Lady Redclaw will be free in an hour, she will meet with you in the dining hall, one of the maids will come up to escort you down." He turned and left the room by the door into the main corridor leaving the kits to their own devices.
