#18 of No Light to Be Seen

Wish I had some excuse to explain my lengthy amount of time without posting but I don't. Didn't help the past couple days I had to edit this alot because the info presented is so sensitive to the story I wanted it to be very clear.

To protect myself from copyright: I do not own Pokemon franchise in any way so Nintendo please don't send your ninja's after me.Thank you!

Credit for helping me write goes to Snow and friends as per usual

Reader do the thing you do that helps betters the story/let writer know his work is complete crap since I can't know if I'm doing something wrong if no one tells me.

Apparently even god's can't break the law of physics that stop us humans from creating a door that links two spaces with each other. In other news Darkrai flies faster than any jet plane when he has a environment of pure, utter darkness to draw strength from. The void we keep seeing him jumping into is apparently just a dimension very closely connected to this one; the person he keeps calling Father had created the space a long time ago in order to travel large distances very quickly. Which is why only him and Darkrai have access to the space. The only problem is traveling these portal at the speed of sound/light makes it impossible for us living organism to breathe the stale air that is somehow in there.

Stupid necessity for oxygen.

Stupid Darkrai for not warning us beforehand

"Warning *cough*gasp* next time please! *cough*" I spat as we living beings were doubled over on the ground.

"Yes...please Alpha" the sound of Zil throwing his two cents in.

"Oh quit your sniveling already! you weren't in any danger...well dying at least since there is a danger of about 95% chance that organics pass out every time I take them with me but not one has died yet...close yes, many times really but no deaths yet" Lovely I'm placing our lives in this guy's hands...

"Where *cough* are we anyway" Zil said as I finally was able to get a look around to see that we were in a dense and very dark forest even though it was about 2'oclock in the afternoon.

"Don't know. Don't care. Doesn't matter anyway considering we are not staying for very long. Have to keep moving to avoid her and I still have to see if you have enough combat abilities to survive out here" Darkrai said as he plucked a stick from the ground nearby and began doodling something on said ground. "Gather around you two, don't pay any attention to what I'm doing; just getting everything set up for later. Just listen carefully to what I have to say because I hate repeating myself"

Zil and I did what we were told but we were dragging our feet while we doing it. Not only were we really uncomfortable standing near Darkrai because of his charming personality and what he was but...he sort of reeked of death and old ash. Was only a subtle scent truthfully so it wasn't really offending per se but the stench still wasn't a pleasant smell.

We would never tell him of this however since we weren't complete idiots

Anyway I couldn't help but flick my gaze to the ground at what Darkrai was doing; it was then I noticed Darkrai wasn't doodling but merely scratching seemingly random words into the dirt. When he finished it looked like this:

Dark, Ghost, Dragon, Bug, Poison ,Steel, Ground, Rock,

Fire, Water, Grass, Electricity, Fighting, Flying, Fairy, Psychic, Ice

Normal

"Before I get into this-" Darkrai said as he tapped the words on the ground with a stick "-I will first give you a brief history lesson." Oh joy I can already see where this is going. I shook my head and sighed "Don't bother. I can already see where this is going with that diagram over there" I pointed at the chicken scratch as Darkrai raised an eyebrow. "Do you now?" Darkrai crossed his arms "Please enlighten me on what the genius mouse has come up with in that small brain of his"

"It's simple. Really overused in human entertainment: two gods have a dispute and they decide to use us mortals as playing pieces in one big chess game. Winner wins whatever was bet. I guess that allows me to correctly assume that Zil and I are foot soldiers"

"Even Zil gathered war. But doesn't mean Elly can be smart ass in present company" Zil growled as he kicked my shin with enough force to make me to yelp pathetically and jump away in pain

"Ass hole" I grumbled as I nursed my injury, aiming a fiery glare at the smug looking rat not too far away to kick like a football.

"Prick"

"I have one yes would you like to play with it bitch?"

"Sounds fun but wouldn't you rather play with mine instead since it's well you know..." Zil pretended to think for a moment before saying with smug smirk " bigger?"

"Oh no you did not just go th-"

"SILENCE!" Darkrai shouted as he struck the stick against the closest tree with a loud bang like a angry school teacher. Unlike a school teacher however Darkrai could apparently swing hard enough to turn the solid looking stick into splinters as it went about a inch or two into the tree. This made whatever Pokémon or birds hiding nearby flee in terror. I wanted to do the same but I was too scared to move under that glare; instead Zil and I chose to clutch each other as we trembled in fear "Sorrysorrysorrysorrysorry!" we both squeaked loudly while trying desperately not to wet ourselves.

Darkrai sighed as he clutched his face with his hand "I always get stuck with the idiots" we heard another sigh before he withdrew his hand ,suddenly looking very tired "You are indeed exactly correct on most of your assumptions mouse but completely wrong about just one part. Using your example of a chess game, your two's roles is the equivalent of both the king and his blade as well as the strategist moving the pieces when/if the time comes"

Zil and I fainted at the exact same time.

Seconds later we expunging the water that we had inhaled after being tossed in a nearby lake "Fucking king and fucking strategist? What the fuck is so special about us that we deserve something like that?" I choked out as soon as I was able.

Darkrai chuckled as he began to lean against a nearby tree "I ask myself the same question continuously sometimes...But data and cold hard facts don't lie. Don't get to excited though, if I have my way I'll finish this war before you can grow into your role. For now I am the strategist and both king and queen until you best me in combat and a game of the mind...the last part for the fifth time" Darkrai mumbled as he punched a hole in a tree, seemingly in frustration before turning to us with a blank look as if he done nothing "But I'll get to that in a second. For now humor me as I explain why exactly we are fighting in the first place with a story that my Father has told me since birth."

Sensing a long tale I placed Zil in my lap and began to play with his ears as we both gave him our full attention (not only to avoid his wraith but because we were honestly curious)

"Long ago at the beginning of time Arceus and Fa- sorry habit- Giratina hatched nearly at the same time and space. They were completely different entities back then, eons more powerful than they are now believe it or not. Anyway the energy from their simultaneous birth created reality and the universe we all live in what your human scientist call the Big Bang. Was a little less showy and flashy then the scientist hypothesize though since everything just slowly materialized . At any rate once the two beings were old enough they began to experiment with their powers. The omnipotent being with the power of all elements and creating life was Arceus. The omnipotent being with the power of creation of solid mass and gravity was Giratina. With those powers they created everything that we see today"

"Wait a second...isn't Giratina lord of the underworld or something? That's what we've been tau- Oww" Zil moved his head up slightly to nip my fingers hard enough to cause pain unlike his usual playful nips; Punishment I guess for interrupting.

Darkrai rolled his eye "Getting to that bit soon, have patience."

Darkrai then cleared his throat and continued with his story "Eventually Arceus created Pokémon; She was amused at first with her creations but then quickly became bored watching them destroy the planet they lived on over and over again with the powers she blessed them. As a result Arceus was constantly fighting exhaustion and annoyance from continuously rebuilding the creatures that lost the battle that took place as well as hearing Giratina complain when he had to rebuild the planet they stood on.

Both argued and physically fought each other for a solution but could come up with nothing short of trashing Arceus's project completely: something she wouldn't allow. Their battles went on for a few years until one suggested they search other spaces nearby for a solution.

Eventually they reached a certain space that held exactly what they were looking for: beings with the ability of control. With tools called emotion and intelligence humans were able to control the powerful creatures that they were living with already despite the numerous physical disadvantages. Finally seeing the solution to their problem the duo tried to take a few and get the recipe to make them themselves. But the god's that made the humans didn't want to share; this left our creators with no other alternative other than to fight for ownership. The other god's were very intelligent but like their creations held very little power themselves, meaning fighting against Arceus and Giratina in combat was like trying to fight a forest fire with just a snowball. After the fight the duo consumed the gods, once finished with their meal they gained new powers: one acquired the power to write the laws of nature and to the other the force of death. With these powers came along with a massive intelligence boost along with a new enemy: laziness."

Zil and I couldn't help but laugh really hard at the last part and to our surprise Darkrai chucked with us a little as well "Yes that was my reaction as well when I first heard that little absurdity the first few times growing up."

Darkrai took a moment to drink some water from the lake before clearing his throat again as a sign he was about to continue with the story again "Thanks to their new enemy the two entities didn't feel like creating their own laws or making the materials needed to create the necessary space needed for their newest additions. So the pair decided to recycle. First they placed everything vital in a safe place before-" Darkrai spread his hands apart before quickly clapping them together to form one big ball. "-smashing the two planets together. Anything on the planets that the two didn't want or just escaped their all seeing eyes was annihilated...Save for a few fossils of the victims that I hear still remain. After they were done they sprinkled seeds of the remaining life forms onto their new home. The first contract was made and the first 1 vs. 1 battle happened a few years after that "

I face palmed myself as my face contorted with awe "You're telling me the dinosaurs and a few species of Pokémon became extinct because a pair of gods became lazy?" Darkrai shrugged, his expression read 'What can you do?' "Anyway centuries upon centuries passed without incident and with nothing better to do the too omnipotent beings gave themselves mortal forms. With those mortal forms then came a emotion and an event they couldn't have ever foreseen with their almost unlimited powers: They fell in love after getting to know each other. With love comes sex and with each union: a new powerful life form was born. This is how every legendary in this world came to be...well besides me and that wrench chasing after me anyway. We are special cases that weren't 'made' the traditional way."

At our confused expressions Darkrai was forced to elaborate, with a sigh and a slump "I was basically made in a lab"

"Ooooooh" Zil and I said to each other as we watch Darkrai get lost inside of his head for a moment and slowly become more and more...bummed (a lot of emotions were shown but that one was the most dominate on his expression) Must have been a sore spot for him; I don't really see what the big deal was though.

Darkrai eventually snapped out of his funk with start and a cough before continuing "As you know: with every happy thing that a relationship provides there is also quarrel. Didn't help the two were as different as night and day or more accurately light and dark. With each violent spat, pieces of the duo's essence broke from them and fell to earth." Darkrai paused for a moment to take another drink of water.

Meanwhile I used logic to guess the next part of the story "Those pieces were unknowingly absorbed by their creations causing light and darkness karma to sprout within those beings souls; correct?"

Darkrai nodded "Good job for catching that. At any rate during one such lover's spat a line was crossed when Giratina did something completely unforgivable: stole Arceus's plates that gave her elemental powers and spread them all into many corners of the world. To add salt to the wound Giratina made it so that Arceus couldn't sense or acquire the plates if she so happened to stumble on one by accident. As revenge Arceus had found some way to block Giratina from his omnipotent form. Then with the help of a few sons, was able to force and lock Father into a certain space; where he could only watch the world he had helped create through one way windows. Windows that Father can see out of and even exert his will through but would never been able to crawl though. To add insult to injury the bitch forces Father to babysit the dead and stop them from finding a way into the living's world.

As a result of both their actions the two began to harbor their grudges in their hearts for one another until eventually the love they once held for each other transformed into nothing but hate and loathing ten times more powerful than the love they once shared. From then on the two gods had fought continuously without actually fighting physically with each other. One side would use the power of darkness to get destroy what the light created while the light counter attacked and then worked to rebuild what was lost."

"Excuse me but-" I said before pausing for a moment before quickly saying "Don't take any offense to these because I'm only asking questions from the facts that you have presented -but if Arceus is so powerful and influential then why doesn't she just gather all of her children and eliminate the threat while Giratina was just about defenseless?"

Darkrai chuckled before replying "I asked the very same question and the answer I received was this : Arceus enjoys the game they play too much!" Darkrai chuckle turned into scary laugh, he continued to laugh by himself for a bit while Zil and I twiddled our thumbs before finally stopping and saying "The reason I find this so amusing is because her love of high stake games is what made this game and bargain possible. It's like she's handing us the keys to her downfall! "

"Finally we're getting somewhere" I whispered as Zil nodded in agreement.

Darkrai continued as if I didn't say anything "The rules to the game is as simple as this-

1)Each side protects a randomly chosen 'king' determined by the lottery of fate. Game is won by two ways: when one side's king has been slain by the other side or when one king manages to find their designated side's artifacts, shrine, and manages to activate both their hidden functions. Game is a draw if one side chooses to slay their own 'king'; if this happens the board will be reset.

2) Neither godly entity can participate in the game beyond a passive force that whispers orders to its legendary lackey's that does it's bidding. Helping said lackey in emergency situations is permitted until the king of that side is found and converted.

3) When recruiting Pokémon, both sides must stick to their designated types.

4) Legendary recruitment is permitted but both sides must announce to the opponent when that piece falls into their power. Legendary recruitment doesn't follow type restrictions.

5)All's is fair in love and war

6) 6)Have fun

"All this sounds simple enough to understand especially the rules but... I can't really believe or accept that your story is the origin of everything. Sure it sounds plausible enough to accept as a possibility in my head but I can't just accept it as fact when it goes everything I was taught since birth. So allow me to respectfully say your story is a crock of bull shi- Ack!"I felt a unseen force grab my neck as my back was slammed against into the a tree a long ways away from where I was consequently knocking the wind out of me.

"You don't have to accept it as fact; you just have to know of it. Remember you are my slave so your opinions or beliefs don't matter to me in the least. But I'll be damned to a hell filled with nothing but of the purest light before I allow you to talk disrespectfully to me like you just did. This swearing-like-a-sailor thing you do is out the window from here on out as long as I'm around! Do you understand me mouse?"

"You sound like my parents" I mumbled as the grip on my neck got tighter and tighter.

"What was that?" Darkrai's tone was that of a warning.

"I said *cough* *gasp* yes Master!"

"Good" my throat was suddenly released and I was sent crashing to the ground on my hands and knees while Darkrai continued talking. "The words written on the ground are the types that belong to each sides. First one is ours and the second one is theirs, memorize them until you can say them of the top of your head like the torrent of disrespectful filth you keep spewing"

We took a few minutes to accomplish what was ordered of us before Zil cocked his head to the side to express his confusion when he asked "Why Normal type by themselves and what 'bout duel types that fall into both categories?"

"Oh yes... Forgot about those. Sorry. To answer your question both Normal types and duel types fall into both categories since they are made up of 50% light and 50% dark karma; like humans. That is up until one side converts them into their side of the spectrum. This means these types are up for grabs by either side; just like Ice was until light got a hold of them as the first move out of the gates... Well played Mew you bitch,"

"Mew? Thought Cressilia was Arceus's right hand servant?" Zil asked just finishing fussing over me for injuries before making himself comfy in my lap again.

"Nope Cressilia is just the counter measure that Arceus had made for me when I was born. Nowadays Celebi is taking over Mew's recruiting duties since is mew obsessed with dealing with her dark clone. Latias and Latios have taken over mine while I deal my counter measure, but I still take a few assignments from time to time as a big middle finger message for the light and to keep my mind sharp when it dulls from the cat and mouse game that got mind numbingly boring a long time ago. Told you this battle has lasted for centuries. There are other rivalries and things you have to be aware of in order to survive."

"If you don't mind me asking Master but...what exactly are we even playing for anyway?" I asked, shuffling as Zil began to nip at my fingers when I began to play with his ears again.

"I don't mind slave I just apologize for getting off track into my rant. Anyway what's at stake is this: If Father wins he gets whatever was stolen from him returned along with Arceus's word she won't stop him doing anything he wishes to the planet and its inhabitants without interference for a brief time. Arceus wins she gets her plates back along with Father's voice so he can't 'bitch and moan about his duties anymore' with the added bonus that she can finally leave the planet to 'expand the game board as well as making new game pieces' without Father's gravity interfering when she tries to leave orbit."

"But wouldn't that-?" I began before Darkrai interrupted

"Take the force of life from earth? No it wouldn't. With the plates Arceus's power level increases exponentially, with that power she would be able to keep a part of herself here to keep everything on the planet running. Birth rates would drop exponentially but life would still continue as normal...until Arceus's new life forms finds a way here to cause drama and whatever else she enjoys. Arceus of course won't tell her servants this part of course. I know of her plans because she likes to blab and doesn't care if we know since she knows that those light aligned won't listen to the those dark aligned thanks to our reputation of loving to use lies to get our way. Honestly I would be offended if that stereotype wasn't true/"

"What is Giratina planning to do?" Zil asked somewhat hesitantly. I think he was afraid getting punished for questioning the motives of our Master's master. I watched Darkrai's eye fog over as a small grin became apparent when he almost dreamily replied "Just revenge and the eradication of all things light. After that mortals will worship it's masters like they were meant to. No more of this hiding from sight crap that Arceus ordered until we are called upon to participate in games for her amusement. "

"Why exactly are you telling us all this?" I sensed Darkrai's small grin increase into a smile rather than see it as he said "Why in the world would you have a problem with this outcome my slave?" as Darkrai spoke his face got closer and closer to mine till I felt the warm air of his breath stroke my cheek. "Don't you feel it in your very soul that this is the best thing for the ones that are Dark aligned?"

I did feel it.

"Isn't this exactly the same change you suggested and swore to your partner that you wanted to make happen?"

Close enough.

"There you go. Besides even if you had a problem with it, what can you do about it when I hold your collar and leash? Who can you tell when I have wiped all traces of the video of last night's events. which by the way I have to applaud you to be for your attempt to remain blameless but leaving the evidence in a plastic bag to protect against the elements in a good enough that the would have been blind too miss. You even thoughtfully put a label on it...what did it say again? oh yea: 'The ones responsible for the death inside'. I almost missed that copy in the lobby but that again was only a almost. It's just too bad that without those videos you: as the only survivor will be blamed for the mansion massacre especially after trying to burn down the mansion to cover up the evidence"

Darkrai might as well as slapped me and then kicked me in the gut as hard as he could. Would have exactly the same effect as this piece of news had.

"Not to mention that there is that corpse with your DNA all over it that has mysteriously shown up in front of the tunnels after weeks of being buried under rubble. Yet somehow is perfectly intact and strangely so well preserved it's like she had been killed just yesterday. You can thank Father for that part by the way. Hey! Aren't those two agents still investigating that case? " I couldn't breathe I was hyper-ventilating so bad. "Whoops! I guess this means you're a outlaw now...huh-" Darkrai tapped a finger against his face as if contemplating something when he was really being a asshole "-I guess this also means that you have no safe place to go besides with me then." Darkrai was laughter was so cold and terrible that I was suddenly enveloped in a horrible cold chill as I fought the vomit rising into my throat back down.

When the monster finally finished laughing he wiped a tear from his eye as he happily said "Just a little blackmail to make sure you cooperate hun" he then tussled my hair like my dad used to do before finally backing up to give me space. In response glared at him with every particle of rage and fiber of my being but couldn't find the energy to strike with "Don't give me that look! I did what I had to since I had no way of knowing you would be willing to cooperate without a fight."

Guess that made sense; I would probably do the same thing if I was in Darkrai's shoes. With that realization my anger disappeared and I gave him a large bright smile as I stuck out my hand "Consider it water under the bridge then. No hard feelings over the past events?" Darkrai looked surprised at the sudden flip of emotions and even looked a bit grumpy as he slowly put his hand in mine to shake my hand. "No hard feelings the- yeowch!" Darkrai yanked his hand from mine quickly as if he was burned which wasn't surprising to me considering he was.

I finally won one "Whoops must be still cooling down from a few moments ago...Sorry Master"

"It's fine. I was the stupid one that grabbed your hand after forgetting your power after all" Well at least he was a good sport. "Enjoy your tiny victory slave because it's the only one I won't make you pay for"

I was the picture of innocence when I said "I have no idea what you are talking about Master" I so did know what he was talking about. Still no punishment was nice so it was best to pretend anyway.

"Sure...Sure" Darkrai mumbled as he nursed his hand

"You still haven't told us exactly why Elly is special" Zil suddenly said reminding us of his presence that I think both Darkrai and I forgot about. "Oh yea... Guess I did kinda neglect that. Well the answer to that question is really quite simple. I give each and every child I visit the same exact test: a gauntlet of nightmares filled with terrible situations that only a person of natural Dark alignment can endure and make the right choices on in order to escape on their own without assistance from myself or Cressilia/other another powerful light based being. Not only did Elliot make it though the gauntlet and escape without assistance from anyone but he also made it though the trial with fastest time ever recorded multiple times with different obstacles. After those test I'm ashamed to admit he also beat me in a game of chess...multiple times"

"Not too brag but people have always told me I'm a natural when it comes to things like games and digging ever since I was a boy so I guess I can kind of see that happening... Lost my enthusiasm for board games though; I'm still pretty good but I much prefer video games." I mumbled sheepishly trying to avoid the two's gazes that made me feel like a frog being dissected and having my insides studied. Then I had a sudden thought "I may be good at strategy based things and I may have jumped a through a few hoops faster than anyone else has but why does this mean anything? Millions of people can have those skills! So how do you know for sure that I am this king piece? I mean... I could just be another pawn or maybe if we're being heavily optimistic here maybe a knight or even bishop. But I know for certain that I'm not king piece material!"

"Allow me to show you something." Darkrai stepped within arm's length in front of me and closed his eyes as if he was focusing really hard on something. I experienced a sudden wave of déjà vu before a picture flashed into my mind's eye. Reality became nothing but this well made of dark purple stone that was glowing a barely visible light purple color. Darkrai's voice reverberated in my skull as I moved closer to the well.

This is what the inside of your soul looked like before I started manipulating it. A normal human's well would the color of the iris in their eye. Your well isn't light green is it?...Look into it I did was instructed and saw a that 1/2 of the liquid was a solid black color and the rest was a solid grey color, like a ice cream bucket but with you know... liquid. Normally; even with the most dark and twisted of my slaves, the grey substance is pure white, it's as if the container was made of a material holding everything together is so dark in nature that even the light liquid was tainted. Now... Suddenly the walls of the well and the liquid turned a solid black color the well and the liquid was now bubbling and steaming while radiating the eerily familiar wisps. This is what your soul looks like now. I have never seen anything like you before and I know you shouldn't exist at all but here you are. This is how I know you are different than the rest.

"Hang on but what about that grey speck about the size of a quarter floating in there? Doesn't that mean I still have a little bit left of light left?"

That little speck contains all the feeling you hold for your rat, darkness can't swallow that without making you into an empty shell; it knows this and so it leaves it alone. Besides no organism besides me can survive an utter black soul without turning either insane or into pure shadow.

I opened my eyes that I didn't realize that I closed as Darkrai withdrew his hand " Trust me I'm not exaggerating when I say Elliot was literally made for his role. But don't you dare start thinking you two can be lazy. You two still will have to work up the ranks to become stronger/useful. If you slack off you'll find yourself being abused and treated like nothing but an object locked in a tiny room with no say on anything whatsoever. Trust me some of my slaves would like nothing more then to use you as a torture or sex doll so you better pull your weight. Still one thing remains constant from here on out: Elliot must be protected from the light at all cost or we lose this game"
