Improve The Silence
#17 of Poems
This poem is inspired by Ashley Wylde. She is a fantastic poet and if you have a moment then I highly recommend looking her up or browsing some of her spoken word videos on her YouTube channel. Meet Yourself In The Mirror by Ashley Wylde is a video that EVERYONE needs to see.
It was once stated that
you should not speak
unless you can improve
the silence.
So many of us speak
out into the silence
writing lines of poetry
that others will never see,
never hear, never get even
the smallest glimpse of.
Some of us speak out
into the air and hope that
maybe one day our words
will come back to us after
they have touched someone
and changed them for the better.
So few of us ever truly believe
that we are good at what we
do no matter how many times
others may tell us that we
are special.
Some of us speak for others
and most of us speak for ourselves
and sometimes we are told that
it is beautiful.
I believe that words are power
and with them we can change
the world.
Maybe not the whole world
but maybe some small part of it
and if something I say can help
just one person feel better then
I will consider my job done.
Have you ever met a person and
known in that moment that their
words would change you forever?
I don't remember how I found
them, only that I did.
I don't remember what they said
but can never, will never, forget
how they made me feel.
For in that instant I knew that
I had found someone whose
words would shake the world.
Maybe not the whole world,
but my world.
Since then their words have
challenged my view of the
world. Of who I am. Of who
I thought I was and of who I
want to be.
Within just a few short minutes
their words ripped away years of
internal struggle and agony like
a bandage, leaving me changed
forever.
It was as if I had been wandering
around in the darkness and finally
found someone who knew just how
to turn on the lights.
Sometimes words are empty
meaningless things tossed into
the air and scattered by the wind.
Sometimes they are bullets that
wound and kill the souls of all
they touch.
Sometimes they are seeds that
grow and sprout in the hearts
of others. Spreading beauty
and healing wherever they land.
I found someone whose words
can shake the earth and change
a person's viewpoint on themselves
and on everything that goes on
around them.
And I wish that I had the skills
and wisdom necessary to tell
them just how badly I needed
their words in my life.
I desperately wish that I could
articulate to them just how
much I needed to hear what
they said and how badly
the world needs more people
like them in it.
People who speak out from the
heart with an emotion and a
passion that others spend their
entire lives trying to hide.
People who have the courage
to speak out in the hopes that
others will hear something they
need in that moment.
People who don't realize just
how courageous they are.
Her words have changed my
world and left me altered and
changed forever. Changed for
the better.
Although I may never get the
chance to say that to her in person
at least I can attempt to do so
through a poem.
People may not always remember
what you said, but they will never
forget how you made them feel
and when I hear her words I
finally feel as if I have found
someone who gets it.
Someone who truly understands
within the depths of their soul
that with the power of words
alone we can shape the world
around us and even around others.
Maybe they don't see it.
Maybe they don't believe it.
But they will one day and I
can only hope that I will be
there to see it.
