Chapter 2

A short while later the soul link between Onyxia and Jacob has stabilized somewhat. As Jacob calms back down the stiflingly thick aura of magic radiating out of him entirely uncontrolled begins to lessen in intensity. Onyxia's swollen belly has been absorbing some of that magic and condensing it into a liquid form, due to the reduced amount being distilled now she starts to shrink back to a more manageable size as she she is able to deflate faster than she is inflating. The movement of the walking seems to help the strange faintly glowing slime work its way out as her belly sloshes with the motion of her gait. After a few hours of walking away from town through snow lit by the great moon and the gently glowing blue and green auroras that are so frequently seen in this part of the world, they sit down for a rest, and to decide what to do now. Onyxia drops herself wearily into the side of a snowy hill, while Jacob quietly shivers and sits in the snow nearby. Upon seeing this pitiful little human getting colder and colder, the newly rekindled womanly emotions compel Onyxia to do something, anything to help the little one. She reaches forward and gently grabs the boy with her massive clawed hand. She then tucks him against her warm body where he won't be crushed if she moves in her sleep. The exhausted Jacob now soothed by the warmth and musky scent of the dragon almost immediately falls into a deep sleep.

Onyxia thinks to herself as she lays there watching this weak looking little human, who has such mysterious power over her and muses over her strange predicament. Yet in the same way a helpless pet invokes the protective instinct of its owner, Jacob invokes a similar feeling in Onyxia and much to her surprise, there is something else too, another very deeply rooted instinct native to the ancient dragons of old, a dormant sense that has never been experienced by Onyxia. The subconscious feeling of attraction to a being of greater strength, commonly felt by lesser dragons who are under the command of an alpha dragon. Originally it was designed by one of the first demons to possess a dragon in order to keep them from continually bickering over rank or breeding rights. Long before the removal of gender from their race entirely by the Elder Mages of Old with the legendary planet-wide curse 'Absolution' which cost the lives of the majority of the world's mages at that time in order to prevent any future dragons from being born with the ability to produce young. Absolution is to this day the most well-known magic ever used in known history, as it had such a terrible price for such a dark magic that was used to save the entire world from the impending fall of mankind to an inevitable, eternal, age of dragons. Onyxia feels that strangely pleasant warmth flowing back into her groin and feels moisture trickling from her as she thinks about boy sleeping peacefully upon her chest under the protection of her wings. She tries to dispel her tender feelings with a snort, and lays her head down to sleep.

The Age of Magic, was the previous age, it was a glorious age filled with great wealth, and peaceful times for the non-magical beings. The entire world was ruled by those with magic and under the authority of that time, Mages never fought wars with massive destructive marching armies in that time. All conflict was settled with discussions, democracy, and by the common practice being whoever the stronger mage was being the one who would be the favored party. For the more petty conflicts between individuals, mages would occasionally duel in a great arena. These Mage Battles were a great spectacle, and were used as a way to remind the non-magical beings of the great power of magic as well as provide entertainment for the masses. It was an extremely effective method of conflict resolution as there were no rebellions for hundreds of years. And the most common form of the non-magical commoners rejecting their leaders was to simply pack up their things and move to another mage's providence. Records of the Age of Magic is largely believed to be inaccurate as it is filled with descriptions of things widely believed to be impossible by the so called 'experts' of this current age.

The Age of War, the current age. A time of strife between all the races. Disease and chaos run rampant across the many outland countries, with only the Imperial Empire of the humans offering any true form of civilization and developed law. The Emperors of the Imperial Empire have been following a trend in trying to be more extravagant and well known than their predecessors. The resulting increases in taxes have begun to destabilize the once vibrant and flourishing economy. The first Emperor, Emperor William was a good man, who strove to create a world where all could live equally and in peace with no regards to the differences of race or species. His descendants have been less and less worthy of his throne, and the once loved Empire is now being seen by an increasing number of people as nation of corruption and darkness, where the Imperial humans will take advantage of any whom the nobility deem 'subhuman'. In the deserts of the far south and east, slavery is as rampant as ever, as has been a part of their culture for even longer than recorded history, and the many exotic races of the world are traded like livestock. The entire world will be following in their path of ever worsening corruption of the leadership of the Empire continues unchecked. Young Jacob is unaware of the current state of the world to the south, but as he has always dreamed of seeing it for himself. And so his grand plan consists of 'Go south, see the world, and take care of my dragon.' With little else thought of, and even less thought given to planning for the journey.

The warm yellow orange sun known as 'The Mother' is beginning to rise over the mountains in the east, followed by the brilliant piercingly blue sun known as 'The Son' an hour later. The warmth of 'The Mothers' light begins to rouse Onyxia. She stretches and opens her wings to check on the little human. Jacob awakes to sudden cold, and bright light. After a startled flinch he stands up, stretches, and speaks to Onyxia for the first time since leaving the village.

"Good morning Onyxia."

Onyxia flops back onto the snow and smiles a toothy grin with her head buried in the snow upside down, so only her nose and jaw are visible, then replies in a much more human and female voice than yesterday's snarling rumbles

"Yes it is. Did you sleep well little one?"

The boy jumps off Onyxia, and does the stretches and morning magic practice he has been doing his entire life. Create fire, levitate a rock, compress snow into a ball ever the fire, and rotate them around, shifting from hand to hand and then behind his back. After his warmup and practice he drinks the now liquid water. Onyxia groans as she stretches like a cat, and lets out startled "rrrnnnh? Ung!" As an egg like object pops out of her and makes a sizable *THUD* that startles her almost as much as the feeling of it popping out of her. Onyxia's eyes are wide with surprise and curiosity as she walks around to inspect this object. Jacob also walks over and inspects the large glass egg. The two look at each other, equally puzzled. Onyxia snorts in a dragonish way of snickering as she thinks to herself but does not say out loud 'looks like you got me pregnant!'

Jacob takes the glass egg and tries to figure out what made it, and why, and if it is the first sign of a future problem. Meanwhile Onyxia sees the Neverfreeze River in the distance, and spanning it perhaps a few hours walk away, one of the ancient stone bridges that are with only a few exceptions, all remarkably still just as structurally sound as they were 200 years ago. These relics are not frequent in this world south of the land of eternal winter, but here they are not uncommon. Left over from the early years of the Age of Magic many fortresses and outposts remain standing as stunning reminders of the glory of the past.

Jacob manages to crack the glass egg as they walk along the path that passes for a road this far north. It releases a cloud of gas that looks almost exactly like the auroras the two watched that night. The egg contains a liquid that glows brilliantly now that it is exposed to the air. The liquid Jacob does not immediately recognize, but upon touching it he identifies as "Pure liquid Mana... this is very rare, and valuable..." His eyes meet hers and she sees raw amazement on his face. "You lay eggs filled with pure liquid man. How?! Why? This is, possibly... really good news!" he says excitedly.

Onyxia tilts her head to the side and sits her rump down as she watches and listens curiously.

Jacob continues to voice his idea "If you can lay more of these, we can sell them for really good money, and if we have money we can buy food. And anything else we want!"

Onyxia blinks, and then arches her neck in an attempt to see her favorite body part, but can't manage to see around her belly. She settles for rubbing her belly as her attention drifts towards the feeling of mushing her balloon-like belly and feeling it move and conform to her hands as she pushes on it in places. She feels something hard start to slide downwards, and then the tunnel behind her favorite body part stretch and fill with the hard object, a little more kneading of her belly makes it slide a bit farther down, until it is just far enough for her to grunt and push it out. She lifts her rump and exposes the steaming egg to the light. They look at it together, and then they look at each other. An excited grin slowly spreads across Jacob's face, and Onyxia can't resist smiling too.

As they day warms up, and Jacob spends his now rested thoughts on the magic behind their fortunate discovery of Onyxia's ability to produce eggs containing a very valuable liquid, rather than just walking and dwelling on the terrible events of the previous day. He figures out how to make the runes on Onyxia's body glow again so he can study them. But without some means of translating them, they are just magic symbols to him. The full body network of complex symbols that covers her entire body is incredible, and utterly baffling to Jacob. It's as if all of his people's ancestors all came together in order to create the most intricate and powerful, all-encompassing array of protection and binding spell ever cast.

"By the Gods! This is incredible, you are completely COVERED in protective wards of every kind, and these are ritual symbols used for kinds of magic I have never even heard of! All interwoven and flowing together like one big picture as one magical circuit! So many facets, so many loops its mind boggling. And there are even parts here that allow expansion of this magic system to be adapted to new things, like when your body was rapidly healing so you didn't explode from swelling so big yesterday. Adaptive protection wards, incredible..."

Onyxia doesn't seem to understand him as he talks about all this technical magic related stuff, but she does enjoy watching him figure out little pieces of the puzzle that he is so fascinated in. And the fact that he is so excited by what she finds herself thinking of as part of 'her body' is flattering, as well as a little electrifying for her, especially when he caresses her to light up more of the symbols. She sighs contentedly and resigns herself to patiently watching the boy work, all the while with a slight smile on her face.

Jacob and Onyxia the whole morning learning about magic as Jacob studies the markings on Onyxia's body. Eventually Jacob gets too hungry to continue and they spend the rest of the day hunting, eventually catching an elk and filling their bellies. Jacob even manages to flash freeze a slab of meat to preserve it, and stuffs it in his only bag.
