Curious George/The man with the yellow hat belongs to Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey/ PBS

It was a nice , sunny day, as George stepped outside of the house; being a monkey, he needed to explore what it could offer and the grass was made for such a good squishing, after all. He could feel it between his toes as he moved toward the tree, to see if Jumpy the squirrel was here today.

He had peanuts and a banana to share with him, although he wanted the banana for himself; it was too tasty to give to others. Anyway, the man with the yellow hat could always give Jumpy one, if he wanted one.

He looked around, wondering where that squirrel could be; he could hear noises, but there was no one around. Maybe he was hiding in his hole; all he needed to do was to poke him a bit, so he would wake up and play with him.

He plunged his hand into the tree hole, wondering if this would be enough to wake him up from his slumber; he could feel his fur and even his tail. And he also felt a strange foam, as if Jumpy decided to wash himself with soap; maybe he wanted to follow in his footsteps?

It was at this moment that he felt the squirrel bite him; it was painful, making him remove his hand from the tree, only to watch Jumpy poke his head out of the tree, foam accumulating near his mouth. Shrieking for a moment, he returned to the tree, as if the sun scared him; he seemed sick; maybe the man with the yellow hat could help him...

``I'm back, George!'' said the man with the yellow hat, as he closed the door behind him, waiting for the monkey to greet him, but nothing happened. Perhaps he was busy playing a game, eating or exploring the neighborhood, just like Mr Roger would want him to do. Either way, he would come back soon.

He waited until the sunset, but the monkey didn't come back; surely he didn't run away, now didn't he? Determined on finding the answer, he took his trusty yellow hat and went upstairs, to find George.

Rooms after rooms, the result was the same; he was unable to find him, until he heard noises coming from the attic; did the monkey get lost in the boxes and was now unable to find his way out of there? He had to find out...

``George, are you in here?'' asked the man with the yellow hat, looking around, unable to see the monkey. Could this be his imagination playing tricks on him, making him wish that George was up there?

Then he saw the monkey, behind a box; he seemed confused and in need of attention, but as he tried to approach, he scurried away, as if he wanted to be alone. Perhaps he did something bad and wanted to think about it, or he hurt himself and wanted to rest a bit; he could always try to catch him, but he knew that George would come back to his bed...

A few days passed; each time, he checked on the monkey, to see if it was doing better, but no changes were observed, as if his friend caught a mysterious disease. Perhaps it was time to call the help of a professional, one that knew how to treat animals better than he did.

Running in the city, he was able to find Professor Wiseman without a problem; he expected her to be in her office and he wasn't wrong. Convincing her that George needed her help didn't take a lot of time, especially when he described the symptoms; he wondered why she didn't tell him what it could be, but seeing that she didn't take time to gather some material, he assumed it was a serious case.

Opening the door of the house, they called for George, getting no response; all they could hear were strange noises, as if the monkey was scratching against the door. Curious about it, they followed it, unafraid of the potential consequences of their acts.

The door was still closed, which seemed strange; George could open doors and windows, making this sudden isolation a new, frigthening fact. But they couldn't let it stop them when he needed help; casting the fears away, the man with the yellow hat opened the door, only to see the monkey race toward him, foam surrounding his mouth, screeching at their presence.

Stunned by this apparition, the man with the yellow hat stayed in position, unable to react; it was thanks to Professor Wiseman that the door was closed and that he was still alive, able to hear the raging monkey bang against the door, trying to reach them.

It seems like George has rabies; it's too late to save him'' said professor Wiseman, as she was holding the door, while looking at the man with the yellow hat, who was scratching his head, wondering how this could happen.I'm surprised that you didn't notice it before it would be too late'' she added, as she looked around for something to block the door, so they could escape, while the monkey was thrashing against the door, enraged.

``You know, people only know me as the man with the yellow hat and that includes you; my name is Joe and my real job is plumbing. I stopped caring about that monkey long ago; at first, he was fun, but now, he is just a pain. I wanted a future, to make people happy or to change something, but all that happened was that they know me as the crazy person living with a monkey while always wearing a yellow hat! You know how dehumanizing it is? I have to lie about my identity each time I go to work, so they won't call the goddamn man with the yellow hat'' he told her, as he pressed the door, making sure that it wouldn't break from the assaults.

The professor looked at him, speechless; she didn't know about his past, about all that he had to go through; she always assumed he was an original person, one that wanted to be called the man with the yellow hat, not just an identity that was forced upon him...

``I'm so sor...'' she tried to say, about to be silenced by him; the monkey was getting violent, as the noises were agitating him more. They needed to deal with him, before he would break free and kill them all...

``Go to the kitchen and grab me a frying pan; I will deal with this myself'' said Joe, as he held the door, looking at as the professor ran down, before reappearing with the item he desired. This was all he desired and needed, for now.

Without a word, he grabbed the pan and moved away from the door, opening it slightly so the monkey could get out. It was as he planned; sensing that he had an opportunity, George walked out of the room, only to be hit on the head by Joe, who continued bashing him.

``That's for the yellow hat I had to wear all these years!'' he yelled, crushing his head, a fact that did not stop his fury as he continued beating the corpse until it was a bloody pulp, tainting his yellow clothes with a deep red.

``What are you going to do now?'' the professor asked, as he tossed the pan away, while stepping on his famed yellow hat, a symbol that he wanted discarded from his life. It was time to start afresh...

``I believe that I will work for the people; I don't know what I will do, but I have the feeling you will hear about me again...'' he told her, as he left the house, leaving her puzzled. She hoped that she would be able to see him again...
